The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has declared that it will commence a three-day warning strike on January 9, 2017 against an alleged anti-labour practice of International Oil Companies.

This was disclosed by the South-West chairman of the union, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, when he spoke to newsmen in Lagos yesterday, adding that the warning strike was inevitable as all other options had failed.

According to him, “We are not gaining anything by going on strike because it is not a joyful thing but as a union, we have to protect and fight for the welfare of our members.

“We have sensitised the public and also seek the intervention of the Federal Government on the anti-labour activities of the IOCs against our members but we are not getting results.

“Our members that put in their best within the time they worked were not paid their severance packages by their employers after they sacked them. This is a big slap and it will not be allowed.

“What they are practising here in Nigeria, they cannot practise in their countries; so, that is why we say enough is enough.”

“Two hundred and fifty members of our union members were affected by the divestment by Chevron Nigeria Limited in the South-East. And this is giving us a serious concern because they cannot feed their families.


“The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige, asked all parties to maintain the status-quo ante and we complied because we respect the authorities, but the IOCs seem to be above the law or more powerful than the government; they failed to maintain the status-quo ante which was amicably agreed on by both parties.

“The minister said Chevron had to pay the sacked workers but its management refused to comply.

“It got to a time when Ngige called for a meeting in Abuja to mediate; at times, its (firm) representatives would not show up.”

Korodo alleged that all other IOCs in the country were involved in these anti-labour practices.

“We do not want the public to see the strike as if we are unnecessarily punishing Nigerians. That’s why we are using this period to protest by asking tanker drivers to hang green leaves on their trucks and our members to wear red cloth.

“By next year, if our grievances are not addressed within this period, we will proceed on a three-day warning strike.

“If the government and people concerned are not able to resolve it, we may be forced to turn the strike into an indefinite one,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari will today, December 14 present the 2017 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly by 10 am.

The president will be accompanied to the National Assembly by top federal government functionaries to lay the document which will be the second since he assumed office in May 2015.

The Federal Executive Council had on Wednesday, November 30 approved the document for presentation to the National Assembly.

“The 2017 budget has been approved by the Federal Executive Council and the details will be revealed when the president presents the budget to the National Assembly,”minister of budget and national planning, Udoma Udo Udoma told state house correspondents after the meeting.

Udoma recently told the Senate Joint Committee on Appropriation and Finance that the federal government will issue new oil licences in 2017.

According to the minister, the federal government would also review the current joint venture arrangements with oil companies, marginal oil fields as well as mount pressure on revenue generating agencies to surpass expected targets.

All these are part of the government’s effort to explore new streams of revenues as the economic recession in the nation bites harder.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up the National Assembly complex ahead of Buhari's visit to the legislature.

In a related development, President Buhari has expressed optimism that the 2017 budget would take Nigeria out of economic recession.

The president said with collective dedication and hard work, Nigerians would in 2017 overcome the economic difficulties, and return the country to the path of prosperity.

Uyo church collapse: Governor Udom orders arrest of contractors

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state has ordered the immediate arrest of the contractors and engineers that constructed the Reigners Bible Church International Inc, Uyo, which collapsed on Saturday, December 10, killing scores of people.

According to Aniekeme Finbarr, the personal assistants to the governor on media, Udom gave the order on Sunday, December 11.

“They (contractors) should be made to answer certain questions so that the state would be able to get to the root cause of the matter,” the governor was quoted as saying.


Governor Udom’s order comes hours after the Senate President Bukola Saraki had called for a probe of the disaster.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu commiserated with the people of Akwa Ibom over the incident.

He also called for investigation into the cause of the collapse, which caused the death of scores of people and injured many others.

While praying for speedy recovery for those still receiving medical attention in hospitals, he called for “urgent and thorough investigation to determine both the remote and immediate causes of the building collapse.

“I believe that such an investigation, if sincerely done, will help us to guard against unnecessary waste of lives, injuries and damage to property in the future. My heart goes out to all the victims, the Christian community in Akwa Ibom State and the entire people of the state.”

Meanwhile, some survivors of the church building collapse have also given a first-hand account of how the building collapsed on Saturday.


One of the survivors, Eno Etim, who spoke with The Punch, said the building collapsed shortly after a lady was called to lead the praise worship.

Etim, who hails from Mbo local government area of the state, said she could not recall how she landed in the hospital, adding that an iron bar hit her at the back, sending her reeling on the floor before she passed out

The housewife, who spoke shortly before she was moved out of the St. Luke’s General Hospital, Annua, Uyo, to the University of UYO Teaching, Uyo, said the congregation was dancing when the church collapsed.

Explaining that she was not a member of the church, Etim said she had come to witness the ordination of the presiding pastor of the church, Akan Weeks, as a bishop, because they both belong to the United Intercessors Network.

She said: “I was inside the church. Everything was normal; there was no problem. A lady was called to lead the praise worship session; the governor came in shortly after that. As the praise worship was going on, the building fell and I didn’t know how I got here.


“The iron fell on my back forcing me to fall on the ground with my face down.

“I don’t worship in the church. I worship in the United Intercessors Network, which Bishop Akan Weeks also belong to. I don’t live in Uyo. I came all the way from Oron.”

A survivor from the Friday, December 9, Akwa Ibom church building collapse has give a detail account of how the incident occurred.

Eno Etim, who spoke to Punch at the St. Luke’s General Hospital, Annua in Uyo, said a lady had just been called to lead in the praise and worship session when building collapsed.

She said after as the lady led the congregation into the worship session, singing and dancing had just begun when the building caved in.

Etim, a resident from Oron said she does not worship at the Reigners Bible Church International Inc. in Uyo.
The survivor said she had only come to witness the consecration of the pastor of the church, Akam Weeks, as a Bishop.

“I don’t worship in the church. I worship in the United Intercessors Network, which Bishop Akan Weeks also belong to. I don’t live in Uyo. I came all the way from Oron,”Etim said.

Narrating the incident, Etim said no one expected that such a building will collapse.

Etim said: “The iron fell on my back forcing me to fall on the ground with my face down.”


She was however moved to the University of Uyo teaching hospital for proper care and treatment.

Meanwhile, Etims niece Nkoyo Okon, said she received a call from an unknown person that her aunt was at the hospital.

Okon said: “I knew she went to the church. But she later called me on the phone to tell me she had been taken to Annua hospital. So, I had to rush down here. I’m grateful to God she is alive.”

Also, an another survivor, a 22-year-old Emen Akpanitiat, said after the Akwa Ibom state governor Emmanuel Udom came into the church, the congregation embarked on a praise and worship.

She said the building collapsed immediately the people were dancing – in preparation for offering.

“It was when the governor came and people started dancing. I’m in pains. The doctor said I’m going to be moved to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital,” Okon said.
“I was inside the church. Everything was normal; there was no problem. A lady was called to lead the praise worship session; the governor came in shortly after that. As the praise worship was going on, the building fell and I didn’t know how I got here,” she said.

Also, Okon’s sister said her entire family is grateful to God for her survival.

The state governor narrowly escaped death on Friday, December 9, after the building of Reigners Bible Church collapsed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

The governor said he assisted the rescue team in ensuring that victims were freed from the debris.

A 20-year-old man is in police custody after brutally killing his estranged lover on Tuesday, December 6.

The suspect from Ingobor, Nakuru is said to have killed his lover Rose, after she turned down his marriage proposal. Witnesses said the suspect had been pestering Rose to marry him including wooing her with gifts.

“The suspect said he has been giving the woman gifts, and when she turned down his offer of marrying him he decided to kill her,” said area Chief Rashid Abdala

The deceased had several wounds on her hand, face and legs with her head severed by the suspect.

“Locals informed me that the woman had been invited by the suspect to the house but after unknown dispute, he killed her. I rushed to the scene and was shocked to find her lying dead,” said Abdala.

A neighbour said he heard cries of help from the house but on checking found the house locked.

Nakuru police boss Joshua Omukata who confirmed the incident said the suspect attempted suicide by taking poison after killing Rose.
He was rushed to Mother Kevins Hospital in Kaptembwo.

A commissioner in Kogi state has resigned his appointment, the state government said on Wednesday, December 7.

Kingsley Fanwo, the director general of media and publicity to the Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello said the state’s commissioner for agriculture and natural resources resigned on Tuesday, December 6.

Fanwo confirming the resignation said Tim Diche informed the state he was resigning on personal grounds.

He said Diche who is a pharmacist served the state in his capacity as a commissioner for seven months.

He said Diche participated fully in the governorship primaries conducted by the All Progressives Congress party in Kogi state in August 2015.

Meanwhile, the Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district said the state has been ostracized.

A popular and controversial pastor in Zimbabwe has left many in shock as he ordered his church members to drink ‘raw sewage’ water on Saturday, December 3, while clearing the church ground along Seke road.

According to H-Metro, the pastor who was identified as Paul Sanyangore ordered his members to drink the ‘gutter water’ when they got thirsty. The pastor went and fetched water at a nearby stream, believed to be contaminated by sewage before applying salt to it.

He reportedly prayed for the water and asked the congregants to drink but no one was forthcoming as they had seen where the water had come from. He then drank it first and gave his congregation members to drink. He later went on radio during his slot on Star FM to announce it.

A source revealed that: “People were clearing the ground at the stand and were thirsty. They could not get water at some tuck shops nearby. The prophet then went to a nearby stream and fetched the water. He applied salt to it before praying over it and told the people to drink it. People were skeptical and he took the initiative to drink it first and they all followed suit.”

The pastor openly revealed that, it was just a display of faith that everything is possible through the power of the Lord, as he backed it up with bible verses.

He said: “It was just a demonstration of faith. We were far away from where we could get water and I just had to sprinkle salt and pray for the water. The people knew the water was dirty and when I said drink it, no one was forthcoming and I had to drink it first to show them nothing would happen. Thereafter they had to drink it. What was just a drink break turned to be a healing session. I know people will say what they want but this is not new. Elisha did that for people to consume water that was deemed bad for human consumption.”

Exploration activities in Benue state may be gradually yielding success as a quantity of crude oil has been discovered.

It is however not yet known if the discovery would be of commercial quantity, but the deputy governor of the state, Engr Benson Abounu, is urging the federal government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) not to relent.

The excitement came as the sole administrator of the Apa local government in the state, Danjuma Solomon, visited the deputy governor to brief him on the discovery of the product in his domain.


According to Solomon, oil seepage was discovered in his local government.

He also spoke about the further discovery of exploratory oil wells drilled in the 1960s by Chevron Nig Ltd.

Engr Abounu said, based on results of several geological investigations, the government was convinced that the state had oil and that exploration is just what was needed.

Benue News reports that Abounu urged the federal government to intensify the search.

In August, 2016 President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to search for oil in state.

Scores of Boko Haram fighters were killed during a fierce fight with soldiers of the 119 task force battalion.


According to Premium Times sources, the fighting took place in the Kangarwa area of Borno state at about 4pm on Sunday, December 4.

The terrorists reportedly launched an attack on the troops' location causing a protracted battle involving the Nigerian air force.

The exact number of killed terrorists remain unclear, however, at least 13 of them were found dead and many more considered to be badly injured.


The anonymous source said: "We are sure most of those who fled with wounds will die eventually."

However, the other side also sustained casualties -- one soldier was killed during and three others were wounded.

The insiders report that when the Nigerian air force appeared raining bullets from the air, the insurgents fled scatter in all directions abandoning their weapons.


"The Nigerian air force responded promptly by dispatching two aircraft in support of ground forces," one source said.

Two Hilux vans belonging to the terrorist group were reportedly destroyed; artillery guns, Ak-47 rifles machine guns and pump action guns were recovered.

A woman claims she saw Jesus when she was just four minutes from death after suffering an ectopic miscarriage.

The unnamed lady said that she screamed for Jesus and begged him not to let her baby die after being taken into hospital.She then claimed, that she saw a huge light in the corner of the room and made out legs, arms and a head.In a now viral video recording,she said.

Fresh findings by Naij.com have revealed that the money spinning Ponzi scheme Mavrodi Mundial Movement also known as MMM might crash between June-July 2017.

Some “experts” in Ponzi schemes who spoke with our reporter said the scheme might not last longer than July of 2017 following recent developments such as multiple registrations by participants by users within the scheme.

This news website also gathered that some participants have now added fraudulent activities to the scheme as they now upload fake evidence of payment.

Just in case you don’t know, 66,000 Zimbabweans participants were affected when this pyramid scheme crashed.

But operators of MMM have however began to move against fraudulent activities as investment can no longer stay more than 30 days in the system.

As at press time, over 3 million Nigerians including the learned and illiterate are participants of the money spinning Ponzi scheme.

With Nigeria further sunk into recession, Nigerian youths and middle age adult have resort to Ponzi schemes as a means of survival as it appears that the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal government does not have answers to end suffering of Nigerians.

Like all ponzi schemes, MMM is none different as it does not have an underlying asset or enterprise upon which the investment is built; rather cash payout is sustained from the investment of investors who come in later.

MMM is a scheme were people matched to help each other. Each help provided is comes with a guaranteed 30% interest or profit (as you may want to call it) in 30 days when the provider of the help requests for help too.

Simply put, MMM make new helpers (participants) to transfer money (help) to other people who had provided help previously to earlier participants and the circle continues.

Also, an existing participant who is able to bring in a new member gets a referral bonus of 10% on every help the new participant offer. This however can only be enjoyed for the maximum of 8 times even if the existing participant is not investing.

In a shocking revelation made on Facebook, the heartbroken mother of a pretty female corps member, Ifedolapo Oladepo, who died at NYSC camp in Kano State, has recounted her final moments.

An Osun state High Court has sentenced a 35-year- old artisan, Kayode Idowu to death by hanging for armed theft and homicide. Each day Submit reviews that Idowu and his companion, Femi Adebowale, had been arraigned by the police earlier than the courtroom on three counts of conspiracy, homicide and armed theft.

Idowu, was said to have broken into the apartments of one Mrs. Rachel Aina Ogbomoniyi and Florence Ajayi at about 1am on August three, 2009 and found N200 from Aina’s room. Once again, another disturbing revelation that emerged in recent weeks of the massive stealing of funds meant to provide succour for the victims of the Boko Haram terror war by officials has exposed the shame of our nation.

After a recent visit to the IDPs’ camps in Maiduguri, Borno state, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of internally displaced persons, Professor Beyani Chaloka, had reportedly lamented: “Food is scarce and many survive on one basic meal per day, while medical care is insufficient. Civilians also require urgent protection, psychosocial support and counselling.

Camps should offer protection. Yet I am alarmed to learn that many are in fact exploiting and abusing the most vulnerable. Reports indicate that women and girls face demands for sex to access food or to leave the camps. Early pregnancy and marriage are commonplace while many do not report abuse due to stigmatisation, cultural factors and the knowledge that perpetrators can abuse with impunity.” But the sex-for-food allegation in IDP camps is just a tip of the iceberg.

Another report by the Human Rights Watch had also revealed how women and girls who have been displaced by Boko Haram’s brutality are being sexually exploited by officials in the camp. In its report, titled, “Displaced by Boko Haram and Victims twice over’, HRW had revealed how government officials and other authorities in Nigeria have raped and sexually exploited women and girls displaced by the conflict with Boko Haram…..who include camp leaders, vigilante groups, policemen, and soldiers.

Women and girls abused by members of the security forces and vigilante groups – civilian self-defense groups working with government forces in their fight against Boko Haram – told Human Rights Watch they feel powerless and fear retaliation if they report the abuse.” A 17-year-old victim had told HRW that just over a year after she fled the frequent Boko Haram attacks in Dikwa, a town 56 miles west of Maiduguri, a policeman approached her for “friendship” in the camp, and then he raped her. “One day he demanded to have sex with me,” she said.

“I refused but he forced me. It happened just that one time, but soon I realised I was pregnant. When I informed him about my condition, he threatened to shoot and kill me if I told anyone else. So I was too afraid to report him.” These are indeed disturbing and worrisome reports coming out of the IDP camps. Many of the victims of Boko Haram who had been displaced from several Borno towns and villages are now scattered in IDPs camp across the north-east and beyond.

In most cases, children and women are caught in the conflict that has pitched the Nigerian army against one of the most dangerous terror group in the world according to the Global Terror Index. In its war against the Nigerian state, Boko Haram is reported to have killed more than 20, 000 Nigerians and displaced more people in its quest to establish a caliphate.

According to information contained in a report ‘Global Overview 2014: people internally displaced by conflict and violence’ by the Internal Displaced Monitoring Centre and the Norwegian Refugee Council, Nigeria has 3.3 million persons – a figure that is the highest in Africa. The victims of terror, which include women and children, are living in IDP camps and many of them have crossed the border to Cameroon, Chad and Niger. But those living in camps in the north-east have now become victims twice over.

Running from the brutality of Boko Haram, they have fallen into the hand of a more dangerous adversary. According to reports, the victims of Boko Haram are now being made to suffer from the aftermath a war they did not cause. Given the recent reports of abuse, sexual exploitation and diversion of food materials meant for their upkeep, the Nigerian government had proven that it cannot protect these unfortunate Nigerians.

How can one explain a situation where fellow Nigerians who were displaced from their homes are now made to in camps? According to the Latest survey results released by NOIPolls, the vast majority of IDPs in the North-East lack access to food, potable water and healthcare.

Analysis from the poll shows that almost 9 in 10 IDPs (85 %) do not have access to quality food and regular meals, about 8 in 10 IDPs (78 %) do not have access to potable water, while almost 7 in 10 IDPs (69 %) lack access to quality healthcare. These results are reported to represent a general overview of what is happening in both official and unofficial camps, across Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

Also, a recent assessment by the medical team of an International medical humanitarian organisation, Doctors without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), revealed that there is a health crisis in IDP camps in North-east Nigeria with about 24,000 cases recorded in a camp in Bama, Borno State. More than 1,200 graves, many of them for children, have been dug near the camp in the last year alone according to MSF.

The huge number of pregnant women, nursing mothers and children with little or no access to good medical health care facilities have surged the number of avoidable deaths in most of the camps. Over the years, the federal government, state governments, the United Nations, private donors as well as other relevant stakeholders have committed funds, introduced several interventions to ameliorate the sufferings of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the sub-region and improve on their general welfare.

Sadly, it appears their conditions have not improved considerably. For example, in August, there was a protest by IDPs in Borno. The allegation of fraudulent diversion relief fund should prompt investigation by the Buhari administration. Some weeks ago, the Nigerian Senate had signalled its readiness to probe the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation over the alleged fraud in the disbursement of over N1.3 billion fund for relief materials to displaced persons.

The relief programme for the IDPs was managed by presidential initiative on the north-east which is domiciled in the office of the secretary to the government of the generation. The probe panel is also to investigate the alleged diversion of grains and other food items from the Strategic Grains Reserves, National Emergency Management Agency and other sources for the displaced persons.

The investigation should be prompt and culprits brought to book. That this has happened at all shows that some Nigerians have lost their fellow feeling and humanity. How can anyone be so mindless as to steal from the vulnerable? Well, the situation is not totally surprising as government officials also steal from the pensioner.

What crime can be more heinous than to steal from senior citizens and those vulnerable Nigerians in displaced people's’ camp? Till date, the 2.5 billion pension fund stolen by pension fund officials has not been accounted for. With the stealing of relief funds meant for Boko Haram victims, it appears those in the position of authority have lost their sense of sanity.

Who else will the victims turn to for help when security agents sexually abuse them and government officials steal the fund, food and materials donated to them? How can the international community and international relief agencies commit their resources when they know it will not get to the victims.

The Buhari government must investigate and punish those responsible for this unpardonable outrage.
