Crime › 86-Year-Old Widow, Comfort Mmezi: Policemen Killed My Two Sons Within Five Years by Mgbadike80(op): 8:46am On Dec 12, 2020 |
86-year-old Mrs Comfort Mmezi, is the mother of a 41-year-old man, Jude Mmazi, who was shot dead by a trigger-happy policeman on his way to a wedding in Owerri, Imo State. The widow tells CHIDIEBUBE OKEOMA that her son’s killing has made life miserable for her
What is your name? My name is Mrs Comfort Mmezi. I am from Ndiohiaoweree Umuduruaku, Umuamusa community, Amucha, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo state. My husband died many years ago. Jude Oguzie Mmazi, who was shot dead on Saturday by policemen, was my only surviving son.
How did you receive the news of his death? Somebody called my only daughter, Assumpta, on the phone that Oguzie, who was with us one hour before that time, was dead. At first, Assumpta and I took it as an expensive joke but the person pressed further that Oguzie was drenched in a pool of blood in his car on the Owerri-Orlu Road. It was at this time that we took the information seriously and immediately my daughter, who is now my only child, left for Owerri. According to my daughter, she met Oguzie dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, where he was rushed to.
What came to your mind when you realised that Oguzie was dead? Immediately, I realised that my life was finished. I realised that life hasn’t been fair to me. I lost my husband many years ago. And I have lost many children. I gave birth to 10 children but as we speak I only have one living daughter. In short, Ifeobu Jonathan, my son, was also shot and killed by a policeman in Lagos some five years ago. Ifeobu was older than Oguzie. I don’t know what I have done to policemen. They have killed two of my sons. They killed Ifeobu in Lagos five years ago and now they have killed Oguzie, my only surviving son who was supposed to bury me. I don’t know what to do. My life, my family is shattered.
What kind of a person was your son? Oguzie was a good son. He never joked with his mother. He was the one who took me for surgery and he came home when it was time to take me back to the hospital for the removal of the sutures. That was what brought Oguzie Mmezi home. He came to take me, his mother, to the hospital to remove the surgery thread. On Saturday morning, he called his wife and spoke with all his children, promising to buy them ice cream on his return from the village. That morning, as he was leaving, I told him that my kerosene had finished and I gave him a five-litre jerrycan to buy kerosene for me when while returning from Owerri. Till this moment, I have not seen my son and they are telling me that he was shot and killed by a police officer for no reason. Oguzie was the only eye with which I was seeing the road. That I eat everyday was because of him.
What about his family? Oguzie has four children – three boys and a girl. His firstborn is seven years while the last child is about two years. His young wife had been forced into widowhood. What kind of a life is this? Why is life being this wicked to me? What was his occupation? Oguzie was into real estate business. He was based in Owerri with his family. He had also lived in Italy. That was the time he built this house for the family.
Oguzie was a good man. He was a wonderful son, a caring husband and a loving father. He was awesome. I don’t know if I will survive this shock. He was the breadwinner. That I ate was him. How do I eat now? Who will bury me when I am gone? Who takes care of this family? Who will take care of his young family, his little children? Oh my God, my life is finished! This is a dream I haven’t woken up from.
Do you hope to get justice over this? Oh my God! Are you really telling me that my only surviving son, Oguzie, my son is dead? My lookalike son, who was just 41 years, dead and gone like that? God forbid. I want justice from the police hierarchy. They must ensure that his four little children, my grandchildren that he left behind are trained well. This country has a Constitution and the Constitution should be applied in trying these policemen who killed my only surviving son. https://punchng.com/policemen-killed-my-two-sons-within-five-years-86-year-old-widow/

Politics › Soldiers Killed Protesters Demanding Akire’s Removal – Residents by Mgbadike80(op): 5:17am On Dec 11, 2020 |
Some residents of Ikire town in Osun State have demanded enquiry into the killing of some protesters by soldiers between October 26 and 27, during a demonstration against continued stay on the throne by Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi.
A resident, Osungbade Adeoye, told The PUNCH that although the number of lives lost in the incident could not be ascertained, he knew of six victims.
Adeoye explained that the protesters had stormed the palace of Ikire on Monday, October 26 to demand implementation of the Supreme Court judgement that had removed the monarch from office.
He further explained that, while the protest was on, some youths disarmed a soldier and took his gun away.
“Even though the weapon was later returned, soldiers descended on the town and killed several people. Bodies of many of those killed were packed and taken away by the soldiers.
“But we were able to identify some people, whose corpses were buried by their relations. They are Kehinde Akinlabi, Tajudeen Ogunremi, Sodiq Muritala, Wahab Dauda, Abiodun Atoba, Bashiru Jide. Also, property belonging to a Chief Odetunde Ologbojo were razed down by the soldiers,” Adeoye said.
Another resident, who gave his name as Sule, said many of those that died were felled by stray bullets fired by the soldiers.
Sule added that residents had accused the chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, Mr Remi Abbas, of requesting for the soldiers.
Chief Apena of Ikire, Odetunde Ologbojo, told our correspondent that his property located at Olorisaooko Compound, Ikire were burnt down by some soldiers.
He said the men that attacked his property on 27 October, 2020, came in full military uniform around 8am and razed down the two buildings and a car.
“I was attacked because I supported Prince Tajudeen Olanrewaju against the incumbent Akire of Ikire.
“Many people were also killed and the soldiers took many of the corpses away,” Ologbojo said.
But LG boss, Abbas, denied calling for deployment of the soldiers, saying the protesters attacked the palace and beat up chiefs.
Abbas said, “During the period there were protests and soldiers were deployed in the town. They are the ones available. There was also 24-hour curfew but people came out and attacked the palace.
“The first set of soldiers that came was attacked. Some of them were wounded. Two guns and a box full of ammunition were taken from them. Also, their Hilux van was burnt down.”
A lawyer from the Femi Falana Chambers, Taiwo Olawanle, in a chat, said the law firm had taken up the matter. https://punchng.com/soldiers-killed-protesters-demanding-akires-removal-residents/ |

Travel › International Students In Nigeria Urge Germany To Resume Issuance Of Visas-sr by Mgbadike80(op): 5:15am On Dec 08, 2020 |
N igerian students studying in Germany have asked the country’s consulate in Nigeria to begin the issuance of visas. The students expressed fear they could lose the admission if the consulate does not begin issuance of visas. The students said the country had not invited them for visa interviews like other countries are currently doing.
The students said the German Consulate in Lagos had kept mute over their inquiries concerning visa application, saying they demand to know the situation of things. Emmanuel Cobham, one of the students, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the German Government should order their consulate to begin operations. He noted that Nigeria does not have high COVID-19 cases like other countries. He said, “Thousands of Nigerians have gained admission to study in Germany but have not even gotten a visa interview date up till this time and stand the risk of losing our admission. “We need the attention of the German Government to be drawn to our cries as other embassies in Nigeria have begun to issue Visa interview dates and visas to students in Nigeria.” To further create awareness on their case, the students created a trend on social media platforms. “Nigerian students shouldn’t be neglected. Our dreams are valid!! Start issuing student visa appointments please,” @__jaunty___ tweeted. “We need appointment dates. We got the admission fair and square. We have spent a lot of money in the application process,” Fidelis, another student, who got an admission, said. One of the students alleged that the German Consulate was handpicking students for visa interviews. “I was at the German Consulate today together with other applicants. I did the count, 15 students in all and four out of the 15 came for their student visa interviews and they were all on scholarship. “They are selectively picking out the scholarship guys and prioritising their visa applications,” the student, who doesn’t want to be named said.

I think Buhari and his handlers are deliberately using any possible format to embezzle money and make that by 2023, Nigeria would be very broke without an ability to take loans. They even resorted to selling national assets in the southern part of the country to sponsor the 2021 budget while doing everything to empower the North. Earlier this year, our loan servicing obligation was more 99% of our revenue and Buhari is still taking more loans. |
