If Peter was talking about a physical grave, why was Jesus preaching to spirits there? Do spirits live in the grave?

So when Christ descended to the lower regions of the earth, it means he died. So where did his spirit go to? Where does the Bible say that Christ spirit went to hades to preach to spirits of dead people who were in hades?
