AgricultureRe: A Thread For Growing Watermelon In your backyard With Photos by Michdear(f): 6:02pm On Sep 02, 2014
MANGAM: By elyjay

Watermelon, citrullus lanatus rank third among the world highly cultivated crops, superseded only by potato and tomato in that order. In fact planting watermelon made me become lazy and mono cropper. Before I started planting watermelon, my chief crops were maize, cassava, yam, cocoyam and rice. But after planting watermelon for two years, I abandoned other crops and concentrated on watermelon till today.
When you are considering quick cash in farming, watermelon is among the crops to consider. The gestation is not more than 80 days, money don come. Kudi yaazo. Cultivated all over tropical climate the largest producers are China, Turkey, Iran, Brazil and U. S. A. in that order. It is produced all over in Nigeria from Maiduguri to Lagos and from Sokoto to Calabar.

Time of planting In southern Nigeria
We have three planting seasons: Early planting is in March, Mid season planting and the most lucrative but risky is June 25 to July 15. Late season planting is August 15 to September 15 in Kwara Oyo and northern parts of Ogun state. Planting in south Ogun, that is Ilaro, Ifo, Ota, Idiropo to Badagry in Lagos is September 15 to October 15. This is
because late rains last till December in these areas.
In the Northern Parts; early season planting is in May and late season planting is July. But with functional irrigation in the north, they are able to plant throughout the year .Lake chad basin in Bornu, Hadeja river basin in Kano are the major irrigation projects turning out watermelon all year round in Nigeria. I am aware that when the price goes so high watermelon is imported into Nigeria from Niger, Chad, Benin and Togo republics.

LAND PREPARATION
Watermelon requires loamy soil or silt loam soil it also perform well on heavy soil if it is well-drained. It does not tolerate waterlogging at all. So if planting on heavy soil, ridging will be helpful to improve drainage. On loamy soil, we normally plant on the flat land. Plowing starts immediately on the first rain. Even if the first rain comes in January, plow the land ready for the second operation.
If the second rain comes any time after February 15th, we can plant in Lagos and southern parts of Ogun state. In other parts, Igbogila, Ayetoro, Abeokuta, Odeda and all parts of Oyo state should plant in March. Planting should stop by the end of March. If you risk planting in very early April, you may succeed but if the June rain should start before 15th of June forget it. The tendency is that either the melon will not ripe or you loose a lot to blossom and it rots. Maturity takes a minimum of 75 days. On the second rain or within the stipulated time, harrow or replow and plant immediately. Experience has shown that portions planted immediately after plowing records higher germination percentage than portions planted the following day unless there is overnight rain.

Jobs/VacanciesBreaking News!!! Mimiko Orders Recruitment Of 2,000 Teachers by Michdear(op): 5:36pm On Sep 02, 2014

The Ondo state Government has directed the
immediate massive recruitment of 2,000 teachers into
its teaching service.
Briefing newsmen on the development on Tuesday, the
State’s Commissioner for Information, Kayode
Akinmade said the Governor Olusegun Mimiko has
directed the state’s Teaching Service Commission
(TESCOM) to begin the recruitment exercise in earnest.
The exercise, according to the Commissioner, is part of
government’s efforts to create more gainful
employment and improve the standard of education in
the state.
Giving details of the exercise, Akinmade said 1,300
University graduates with Teaching education
qualification will be employed.
He added that 200 National Certificate of Education
(NCE) graduates holders and 500 Non-teaching staff
will also benefit from the exercise.
The Commissioner said Applications Forms are to be
obtained online by applicants for free, vide TESCOM
website, ( www.ondotescom.org ).
Akinmade noted further that quality control system will
be adopted in the employment process.
This according to him, will include computer based test
(CBT), with General Paper, Core subjects and use of
English as parameters, adding that qualified
candidates will be interviewed by TESCOM which has
also been saddled with the responsibility of final
selection to be followed by one week induction course
by successful candidates.
The government says the recruitment drive is to
strengthen the educational sector at the secondary
school level as it moves ahead to create a world class
standard.
Besides, the measure will provide jobs for the
burgeoning population of unemployed youths in the
state.
Though the state government had since 2009 carried
out teaching employment on the basis of consequential
vacancies, it however said it embarked on this massive
recruitment to mop up youths from the unemployment
market, empower, as well as give them a future and a
hope.
The present administration has since inception carried
out a number of educational policy at all levels of
education in the state from the primary to the tertiary,
one of the recent being the heart warming free school
bus shuttle which has not only provided succour for
both parents and students but has also gone a long
way in improving school attendance with the incidence
of absenteeism and lateness checkmated.
With this new recruitment of 2000 teachers in one fell
swoop, government says it has further demonstrated
its determination to further raise the standard of
education in the state having benchmarked primary
education with the establishment of the first of its kind
Mega schools, provision of Science and teaching
equipment, conducive learning environment as well as
highly motivated teachers.
It will be recalled that the state’s tertiary institutions,
the Ondo State Rufus Giwa Polythechnic, the Ondo
state’s owned Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba,
Akoko were adjudged the best state owned tertiary
institutions in their different categories in Nigeria by
the Transparency International Standard organisation
in the United States of America.
The Ondo state government is prioritizing education at
this time even against all odds in its believe that
education empowerment of its citizenry is the number
one antidote against poverty and in-equal distribution
of wealth as well as the vision to achieve an egalitarian
society.

On a serious note, this summarises the reason why we need to kick out PDP from this country from 2015 and beyond!!!

Why do I get this strange feeling the guy sitting next to him, who seems to be the p:mp, is the nairalander Idu-Mud-House!!! They look too similar!!! shocked

The other day, it was a former Attorney General I saw pissing on a tree at the back of the club while a policeman stood guard!! Dude waved as he passed in front of me after he was done and I ignored him like I would a buzzard (boss thang grin). These are our leaders in their real character!!!

PoliticsRe: Mimiko May Decamps To PDP by Michdear(f): 10:46pm On Aug 22, 2014
Sincere9gerian: That is not true. At the Anambra and Ondo gubernatorial elections, those parties keenly contested the positions with the PDP. The PDP came second in those elections but if it had won, it would not have surrendered it to any other party for any reason.

Yes, the APGA and Labour party have sympathies for the PDP at the national level/presidency but that is only because they feel more protected by a PDP led presidency. They dread a presidency headed by the aggrieved APC leaders. It is just a matter of choosing where your bread is better buttered or where you'r in better position to survive.
you are on point darling
PoliticsRe: Mimiko May Decamps To PDP by Michdear(f): 10:44pm On Aug 22, 2014
edogirl2: The problem for Mr Jonathan is that Mimiko actually brings very little electoral fortune right now.

The guy cannot win the Ondo election for GEJ. If GEJ wins in Ondo, it will be because people want him to win, it wont be because of Mimiko.

Right now, Mimiko needs PDP more than PDP needs Mimiko.
wetin dis one dey yarn?don't dull girl that man influence will greatly work out not in ondo alone but oyo and ogun as it does in ekiti is the brain behind it all,his a political genius, all the old pdp members can go to apc kokan aye,gej will still get what he want from ondo as far as mimiko is concerned,GEJ should just allocate more federal govt project to the state as extra backup meanwhile in ondo state forget about apc

PoliticsHypocrises Of Northerners by Michdear(op): 1:08pm On Aug 14, 2014
Some of us who are following the National
Conference with keen interest can only laugh at
hypocrisies of the so-called Northern Delegates. They
rejected state police, yet they cried they were not
protected from Boko Haram onslaught. They rejected
resource control, yet they complain of dwindling
resources from the Federal Government. They are
against increment in derivation policy, yet they want
5% of the total revenue for rehabilitation of North
East states. They reject demands from others but
want all of their demands to be met.
They ask what is wrong with existing status quo.
They wanted to know what is wrong with niger delta contributing 63% to our national revenue,
South West contributing 23% and South East 8% and
the entire North contributed 6%, yet 54% of the
revenue goes to the North that contributed 6% of the
revenue. They wanted to know what is wrong with
having over 10 million children on the street as Al-
majiri that eventually metamorphosed into nuisance
of streets of Lagos or terrorists on in Chibok. They
wanted to know what is wrong with the level of
religious intolerance in the core north while all over
the south of Nigeria, people practice the religion of
their choices without hindrances.
But one thing should be clear to them, they can
argue about onshore-offshore dichotomy as long as
they like, Nigeria is awake. We are no longer going to
allow a section of the country drag us back. If they
like, they should bomb from Maiduguri to Kafancha,
meaningful development will continue to go from
Uyo to Abeokuta. While they are busy issuing
ultimatum on the Chibok abduction, we will continue
to issue ultimatum on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
They should continue to call Jonathan names for not
stopping female suicide bombers, we will continue to
call him names for not providing electric train from
Lagos to Port Harcourt.
At the end when the oil from Niger Delta cease we
will know who has been fools all these years.
