PoliticsWhy Mimiko Had To Move! by Michdear(op): 12:49pm On Oct 05, 2014
WHY MIMIKO HAD TO MOVE!
"Never confuse movement with action, some move
without reason, thus no action. While some move for
reasons and full of action"
Mimiko has proved himself beyond all doubts. He
remains the only Nigerian politician that left a truly
national party for an almost nonexistent party and
won governorship within so short a time as five
months. With the party,he also won a second term
slot.
Now is the time to play national politics because he
won't be eligible to contest a third time. Only naive
analysts will expect him to play national politics with
a party that hasn't really expanded beyond his state
or a party that only got a name because he became
governor on its platform.
If Tinubu who controls five states with his ACN
cannot play genuine national politics with the party
but still did everything possible to ensure he alligns
with other parties to play it big,why won't Mimiko
leave LP to play it big?
The only angst of many about Mimiko's move to pdp
is that they'd rather have had him move to APC. But
why APC when he has always been a supporter of
President Jonathan? Why APC when the likes of
Tinubu will be lying in wait to suffocate him and his
followers?
In the truly national politics of today,it's either you're
in Pdp or Apc.
The Labour Party has refused to grow - bearing the
name without the support of the Umbrella body of
Labour. Mimiko has tried to sustain the Party
accounting virtually all the elected Officers of the
Party and being the main reason while the Party was
not deregistered.
Truth again is, there's no better time for Mimiko to
move than this. Only a foolish politician will wait
until he's powerless and probably irrelevant to move
on. Today,Mimiko is being celebrated by the who and
who in PDP at the national level because they see
him as a formidable enlargement for their coast but
they won't see him that way if he's out of power.
They may also not regard him much if he joins them
after 2015 when Jonathan might have been re-
elected.
I repeat,Mimiko is one of the most astute politicians
in the country today who knows when to make his
move.
Remember he moved to LP in 2006 against all
threats posed by a despotic President Obasanjo and
his own governor and many thought he's finished.
IS IT FOR SELFISH OR PERSONAL GAINS?
Some funny set of people have also been seeing the
move as selfish. Methinks this is infantile and
illogical
Is it right to consider the movement of a political
leader of Mimiko's class a selfish move? Or like
someone said ".. for personal political gains"? When
Chief Obafemi Awolowo moved his UPN in 1979 to
form a political alliance with strange bedfellows like
Waziri's GNPP,Aminu Kano's PRP and Zik's NPP in
order to checkmate the ruling NPN,was it be
considered a move for personal gains? When Tinubu
moved his ACN to form an alliance with Buhari's CPC
and others was it for personal gains? Or to move
himself and his followers out of the conclave of
regional politics into mainstream national politics?
When Mimiko moves and such moves yield political
gains, will he be the only person to gain from it? His
movement from pdp to LP produced many
senators,Mhrs,commissioners,and sundry other
political office holders.
When someone is a genuine political leader, his
decisions as far as political movements are
concerned cannot be regarded as being for selfish
gains. He might even have to consider his followers
first because there isn't much left for him to achieve
on the political terrain.
DELE MOMODU:A CUNNING HYPOCRITE!
1) Dele used to be a member of Labour Party. He left
it and according to him - '...Before my exit, when I
found the party virtually irredeemable...' But Dele is
now 'upset' with Mimiko for leaving the same Labour
Party? Isn't it possible that Labour party is still
'irredeemable'? In fact, Dele accused the current
party leadership of 'Chicanery'
2) Dele says - '...Iroko has jettisoned loyal Labour
Party members who felt his leadership was
necessary in their bid to start the process of effective
opposition like jetsam and flotsam. He has given no
consideration as to the hiatus he has created...'
Couldn't the same have been said when Dele left for
NCP? Isn't it possible that there were members of
Labour Party who looked up to Dele (since Dele was a
successful business man and had links to movers
and shakers in Nigeria including past military
leaders) and felt letdown when Dele left?
Has Dele also ever wondered why Oshiomhole a
former NLC President had to leave the LP for ACN?
What future has the LP as a truly Nigerian workers'
party that he's now hypocritically craving for?
Momodu got it wrong with some funny assumptions.
Did Labour Party make Mimiko? Wasn't it Mimiko
that made Labour Party a party to be reckoned with?
Truth is,Mimiko was not made by the Labour Party
rather he made the Labour Party. We all know that
Mimiko would still have emerged governor with
which ever party he moved to in 2006. Winning with
Labour only made it clear that he basically won on
his own popularity and political strength. He didn't
make the mistake of moving to the strongest
opposition party then (ACN) which could've confused
people into thinking it was Acn that made him. That
was the mistake Oshiomhole made. If Oshiomhole
had remained in LP,he would still have won the Edo
governorship in 2007. But today,it is generally
assumed that Tinubu's ACN made Oshiomhole a
political heavyweight.
Also why his worry about Mimiko leaving a party he
considered the workers party? I ask again: What
future has the LP as a true Nigerian workers party?
Someone should remind him that the NLC has come
out to actively support other parties outside the LP
on several occasions. A splendid example is the Ekiti
election. Despite Mimiko's pleas to the leadership of
the NLC to support Opeyemi Bamidele of LP they
solidly supported Fayemi of APC!

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is the 5th Executive
Governor of Ondo State. Born 3rd October 1954
to Pa and Mrs. Atiku Bamidele Mimiko of Ondo
Kingdom in Ondo State, his mother hails from
the prominent Ogunsulie family. While his great,
great grandfather was High Chief Adaja
Gbegbaje of Ondo, and his great grandfather,
Chief Akinmeji, was Ruwase of Ondo. His father
was an accomplished businessman of his time.
It’s then not surprising that he ensured all his
children were all educated in good schools across
the country. As a young boy, he had a doting
father, and his mother remains very caring.
Though not born into opulence, he grew up in an
environment that was suffused in love and care.
Olusegun Mimiko was admitted to St. Joseph’s
College, Ondo in 1966 where he graduated in
1970 with the West African School Certificate.
His graduation from this prestigious school
helped shaped his life. Between 1971 and 1972,
he was a Higher School Certificate (HSC) student
at Gboluji Grammar School, Ile-Oluji before he
gained admission to the University of Ife (now
Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife in 1972 to
study Medicine. He chose Medicine because his
father believed that if you didn’t study science,
you were dumb. It’s as a result of this, his eldest
sister Alhaja Hafsat Oyeneyin read Pharmacy. In
1976, ‘Olusegun Mimiko bagged a B.Sc. Health
Sciences Degree, and the MBChB in 1980, and he
is appropriately registered with the Nigerian
Medical and Dental Council as a Medical
Practitioner.
As a medical doctor, he worked in the private
and public sectors. Between 1980 and 1981, he
was a House Officer with the Ondo State Health
Management Board under which auspices he
worked at the General (now State Specialist)
Hospital, Ado-Ekiti. He had a stint with the
Nigerian Naval College (NNS Onura), Onne, Port
Harcourt, between 1981 and 1982, from where
he returned to join the services of the Ondo State
Health Management Board as Medical Officer in
the General (now State Specialist) Hospital,
Ondo, in 1982.
From late-1983 to 1984, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
had his initial taste of private medical practice by
working at different times as a Medical Officer at
Apagun Clinic, Yaba, Lagos; and as Acting
Medical Director, Alleluyah Hospital, Oshodi,
Lagos. He returned to public service for another
year between April 1984 and February 1985
(again with the Ondo State Health Management
Board) before finally going into full private
medical practice with the setting up of the Mona
Mediclinic with headquarters in Ondo Town,
Ondo State. During his private practice, people
trooped to his hospital for treatment, and at a
point, his clinic was like a charity home.
How then did a medical doctor so good with his
work decide to veer into politics? His political
activities date back to his undergraduate days as
a medical student at the then University of Ife, in
the late 1970s and early 1980. People knew him
more with symposia and student union activism
while he was in university. His last two years in
the university, in particular, were filled with
activism. So powerful was he that he made a
Student Union President in his room at Ife then.
He was the one who packaged Wole Olaoye to
become president of the student union as he
(Mimiko) was his campaign manager. So, he
came from that tradition of activism and he was
able to blend it with Medicine.
Olusegun Mimiko was at various times a member
of the Students’ Representatives Council
(Parliament), 1975/76, and chairman of its
Special Honours Committee. For a period in
1976, he was elected chairman of the council.
Outside the union legislative house, he served on
the University of Ife students’ union electoral
commission, 1976/77. He was the public
relations official of the International Students’
Association of the university between 1977 and
1978.
After graduation Dr. Olusegun Mimiko moved up
from a student union activist to find political
expression and identity in the Unity Party of
Nigeria (UPN) of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. After
his return from the National Youth Service
scheme, he took up membership of the party. As
a budding politician, he served as the publicity
secretary of the Ondo local government chapter
of the UPN in 1983. The internal crises which be-
devilled the UPN and the politics of the era
dragged on to the 1983 general elections. This
could not stop Dr. Mimiko and douse his in-born
passion for social change. This cohered with the
concern of 3 budding intellectuals ensconced in
two Nigeria universities; themselves
accomplished individuals today, Professor Femi
Mimiko, Dr. Rotimi Adelola (Ondo State’s current
Secretary to the State Government) and Engr.
Wole Akinjo, on the need for some form of
intervention and departure from this growing
tendency at demonizing politics. They vigorously
engaged with the idea of getting concerned
elements to continually brainstorm on ways to
improve on the politics and governance in the
Nigerian society.
Late in 1987, this idea led to the emergence of
the Ondo Study Group (OSG) over which he
presided. After an extensive review of its political
mobilization effort in 1988, the OSG General
Assembly enjoined full participation of its
member in politics. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko took a
lead on this initiative. He was supported by the
Group to run for office as chairman of the former
Ondo Local Government (now Ondo East and
West LGAs) in 1990 under the aegis of the newly
formed Social Democratic Party (SDP). While that
early effort did not achieve its specific objective,
it marked the transformation of Dr. Mimiko into a
full-fledged politician. He was later to serve as an
ex-officio member of the SDP Executive Council
in Ondo Local Government Area and as a
member of the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
OSG soon found rewarding relevance in the
campaign organisation of Evangelist Bamidele
Olumilua who was bidding for the government
seat on Ondo State under the SDP. Before long,
Evangelist Olumilua saw the talent in the
energetic Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and appointed
him the honorable health commissioner in 1992.
By the time he was leaving office in late 1993 as
a result o the military coup d’etat that
terminated that republic, Dr. Mimiko had left his
mark as a performer. This first tour of duty as a
public official was a great opportunity for Dr.
Mimiko to demonstrate the stuff of which he was
made. It set the tone for a distinguished career in
politics the continuation of which is his swearing-
in as the fifth elected Governor of the Sunshine
State.
In recognition of his extensive contribution to the
victory of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the
1999 governorship election in Ondo State, Dr.
Olusegun Mimiko was appointed as the
honorable Commissioner for Health in the state,
making the second time he would hold that
office. Before he resigned from that position on
7th November 2002, he had greatly enhanced
the quality of health care delivery in the state.
On 7th November 2002, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
resigned his appointment as State Commissioner
for Health, ‘for strictly personal reasons’ in the
conviction that he would be in a better position
to facilitate increased quality of governance in
Ondo State. In response to the call across the
state to join the gubernatorial race, he formally
announced his intention to contest the
governorship election on the platform of AD on
Tuesday, 19th November 2002, at a press
conference in Akure. He insisted that for Ondo
State, there certainly were brighter days ahead.
That was the cliche that defined his campaign
organisation – the Brighter Days Network.
Dr. Olusegun Mimiko later left AD over issues
centred on irregularities on gubernatorial
candidate. He then adopted the Peoples’
Democratic Party (PDP) of those early years as a
preferred platform for the continuing struggle to
enthrone good governance in Ondo State. After
the victory of the party in April 2003 polls, he
was appointed Secretary to the State
Government (SSG), a position he occupied till
July 2005 when he was appointed by then
president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as Minister of
Housing and Urban Development. It was from
that position he resigned on 8th December 2006
to enable him offer himself once again for higher
service to Ondo State as Governorship candidate
in the April 2007 election. This was under the
auspices of the Labour Party which he formally
presented to the people of the state at City Hall,
Akure, on 14th December 2006.
Over the years, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has
authored many research papers and published
articles focusing on issues as wide-ranging as
medicine, international relations and national
socio-political developmental strategies. For
leisure, Dr. Mimiko engages in writing and
reading. Way back in 1971, the young Olusegun
had won the John F. Kennedy Essay (School
Level) Award, underscoring his creative
capabilities. He is also a farmer and an
environmentalist with an abiding love for flowers
and plantations. He is also a lover of exquisite art
works. An administrator and record-maker per
excellence, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has won several
awards in recognition of his excellent
performance in public office and communal
engagement. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is happily
married to Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, a virtuous
woman who has greatly supported her husband.
Together, His Excellency Dr Olusegun Mimiko
and Her Excellency Mrs Olukemi Mimiko are
blessed with adorable children.

its the State University for crying out loud. It is supposed to be the pride of the state and should have been put at the centre or somewhere close to it where it would have been appreciated by all and sundry. How can the once famous OSUA still not have a medical faculty by now? How can a whole OSUA not have an engineering faculty by now?

I'll tell you this for sure; If AAUA/OSUA had been at Akure, it would have developed far beyond what it is now.

Universities are too valuable to be sited and built based on tribal/selfish interests. Its Polys and Colleges of education that should be done based on that shhitt.

Agagu abandoned AAUA for OSUSTECH and poured all his money there, Mimiko abandoned both and is building a nursing(or whatever the hell that is) school in his hometown.

Now tell me, is that how its supposed to be run? If an Ilaje man becomes the next governor, he'll very likely build a bogus school at Ilaje and pour all the State's purse into it. Common bro! Open your eyes!
you actually right on some points, but sometimes I do ask myself why we all think a certain town is not important or relevant akungba akoko is a town in ondo state I see no reason why we can't have the state uni there but it will have been better if the school was sited in ikare or oka that's the two biggest town in akoko land, but in my own case I will never support that decision to site in akure,we have futa and federal college of agriculture there already, other major towns need the economic of value of the uni than akure with is capital status ondo state is not imo state where all tertiary institututions are sited in owerri,,well agagu decided to locate osustech @ okitipupa cause the engineering department @ aaua wasn't active but he should have done something about it instead of creating another uni,we all know that game, college of medicine would have been better instead of osustech that what mimiko will eventually did though, back to what you said well I doubt if another governor will dare try to build a new uni that will sound insane,we all know will need university teaching hospital/college of medicine that's still reasonable, note:all the senatorial districts now have a state institutions,by the way agagu was able to do much in okitipupa and coastal area than other part of the state ,well won't blame him much and for mimiko political game, mehnnnn you can't blame that man we all need to stop sounding like a hypocrite.

Even the north is building a university for women which will include that ( women's medical university).

The swstern states really need to sit up and utilize productive planning because other parts of nigeria are not waiting for anyone before doing their own and neither are they " looking face".
yea that's true, all we have is just university teaching hospital,LASG actually work on college of medcine/lasuth but not sure how grand and solid it is in terms of academic.mimiko was actually working on a full fledge college of medcine/teaching hospital that will award bsc,msc etc since the present state uni aaua don't have the faculty.

engaged with the idea of getting concerned
elements to continually brainstorm on ways to
improve on the politics and governance in the
Nigerian society.
Late in 1987, this idea led to the emergence of
the Ondo Study Group (OSG) over which he
presided. After an extensive review of its political
mobilization effort in 1988, the OSG General
Assembly enjoined full participation of its
member in politics. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko took a
lead on this initiative. He was supported by the
Group to run for office as chairman of the former
Ondo Local Government (now Ondo East and
West LGAs) in 1990 under the aegis of the newly
formed Social Democratic Party (SDP). While that
early effort did not achieve its specific objective,
it marked the transformation of Dr. Mimiko into a
full-fledged politician. He was later to serve as an
ex-officio member of the SDP Executive Council
in Ondo Local Government Area and as a
member of the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
OSG soon found rewarding relevance in the
campaign organisation of Evangelist Bamidele
Olumilua who was bidding for the government
seat on Ondo State under the SDP. Before long,
Evangelist Olumilua saw the talent in the
energetic Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and appointed
him the honorable health commissioner in 1992.
By the time he was leaving office in late 1993 as
a result o the military coup d’etat that
terminated that republic, Dr. Mimiko had left his
mark as a performer. This first tour of duty as a
public official was a great opportunity for Dr.
Mimiko to demonstrate the stuff of which he was
made. It set the tone for a distinguished career in
politics the continuation of which is his swearing-
in as the fifth elected Governor of the Sunshine
State.
In recognition of his extensive contribution to the
victory of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the
1999 governorship election in Ondo State, Dr.
Olusegun Mimiko was appointed as the
honorable Commissioner for Health in the state,
making the second time he would hold that
office. Before he resigned from that position on
7th November 2002, he had greatly enhanced
the quality of health care delivery in the state.
On 7th November 2002, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko
resigned his appointment as State Commissioner
for Health, ‘for strictly personal reasons’ in the
conviction that he would be in a better position
to facilitate increased quality of governance in
Ondo State. In response to the call across the
state to join the gubernatorial race, he formally
announced his intention to contest the
governorship election on the platform of AD on
Tuesday, 19th November 2002, at a press
conference in Akure. He insisted that for Ondo
State, there certainly were brighter days ahead.
That was the cliche that defined his campaign
organisation – the Brighter Days Network.
Dr. Olusegun Mimiko later left AD over issues
centred on irregularities on gubernatorial
candidate. He then adopted the Peoples’
Democratic Party (PDP) of those early years as a
preferred platform for the continuing struggle to
enthrone good governance in Ondo State. After
the victory of the party in April 2003 polls, he
was appointed Secretary to the State
Government (SSG), a position he occupied till
July 2005 when he was appointed by then
president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as Minister of
Housing and Urban Development. It was from
that position he resigned on 8th December 2006
to enable him offer himself once again for higher
service to Ondo State as Governorship candidate
in the April 2007 election. This was under the
auspices of the Labour Party which he formally
presented to the people of the state at City Hall,
Akure, on 14th December 2006.
Over the years, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has
authored many research papers and published
articles focusing on issues as wide-ranging as
medicine, international relations and national
socio-political developmental strategies. For
leisure, Dr. Mimiko engages in writing and
reading. Way back in 1971, the young Olusegun
had won the John F. Kennedy Essay (School
Level) Award, underscoring his creative
capabilities. He is also a farmer and an
environmentalist with an abiding love for flowers
and plantations. He is also a lover of exquisite art
works. An administrator and record-maker per
excellence, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has won several
awards in recognition of his excellent
performance in public office and communal
engagement. Dr. Olusegun Mimiko is happily
married to Mrs Olukemi Mimiko, a virtuous
woman who has greatly supported her husband.
Together, His Excellency Dr Olusegun Mimiko
and Her Excellency Mrs Olukemi Mimiko are
blessed with adorable children.

CyberWolf: 37. We have also launched a special support programme for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises with an initial intervention fund of two hundred and twenty billion naira (N220 b). This is in addition to the Presidential Job Creation Board which I inaugurated recently with the charge to create three million jobs annually.

38. In demonstration of our Administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit, we have commenced the new mortgage re-finance programme with the establishment of the Nigerian Mortgage Re-finance Company. It is expected that, in addition to creating additional housing units across the country, this initiative also represents a huge job creation opportunity.

39. We have recorded notable success in the social sector. Nigeria has been globally acknowledged for reducing extreme hunger by more than half, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) formally presenting the country with an award for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on Hunger three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals.

40. This progress is as a result of the deliberate policy of government to increase capacity in our agricultural sector of which the first step was to address and eliminate the graft in our fertilizer procurement system and ensure that the product gets directly to the farmer. We are expanding our irrigation infrastructure to ensure that our farmers have sufficient water supply for dry season farming.

41. A benefit of these combined actions is that our national food import bill has declined from 1.1 trillion naira (6.9 billion dollars) in 2009 to 684.7 billion naira (4.35 billion dollars) by December 2013, and continues to decline.

42. Modern hybrid schools are being provided for less privileged children across the country, resulting in significant increase in the national school enrolment figure

43. In order to further enhance access to education at the tertiary level, fourteen new Federal Universities have been established; and, to encourage persons of exceptional abilities, our Administration has also introduced a Presidential Scholarship Scheme based strictly on excellence and merit.

44. On infrastructure, we are building roads, bridges, and new rail lines to make it easier to traverse Nigeria and increase the integration of our people and our ability to do business with each other. In this regard, we have commenced the process of building the Second Niger Bridge. The Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue in Nasarawa and Benue States, will significantly reduce travel time by road between Northern and Southern Nigeria. The on-going dredging of the River Niger up to Baro in Niger State is opening up large parts of the Nigerian hinterland to maritime activity.

45. The Zungeru and Mambilla Hydro-electric power projects are on course, and the Kashimbilla dam which we started a few years ago, is nearing completion. The successful privatisation of our power sector will in the long run enhance industrial growth. Policies such as this and others have raised Nigeria to the enviable status of being the number one recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the past year.

46. The result of this infrastructure drive is that two and a half million jobs have been created over the past two years. This is a record, which we are committed to improve upon to continue to provide jobs for our youth.

47. An unprecedented number of Airports across the country, are not only being reconstructed at the same time, but being re-equipped and reassessed with emphasis on maintaining global standards.

48. Fellow Nigerians, the goals we set to achieve for our country involve expanding the frontiers of economic freedom. Let us therefore unite with one heart and one mind. All our people must have access to the good things of life. All our people must be empowered to pursue the gift of life with happiness. This is our country; we must build it for our common posterity.

49. As we move into an election year, desperate moves to overheat the polity are becoming a regular occurrence. Our political leaders in particular must know that the contest for power should not translate to the destruction of the polity.

50. The contest for the leadership of our country must yield good governance, and not ungovernable spaces. The love of country should rank higher than our individual ambitions.

51. We must remain committed to a united and indivisible Nigeria within democratic parameters. The protection of individual rights, liberty, equality before the law, freedom of thought, and a progressive pursuit of a sound economy must be our goal.

52. I cannot end this address without commenting on the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which was sadly brought into our country recently. My directives to the Federal Ministry of Health saw the ministry leading the charge in curtailing the spread of this deadly scourge and managing its impact. This is how it should be: swift, effective and comprehensive action in defence of citizens.

53. It must be pointed out that the Ebola battle is still raging elsewhere in our sub-region. I therefore enjoin all our citizens to continue to adhere strictly to all the guidelines that have been given by our health officials to keep Ebola out of our country.

54. I appreciate and welcome the spirit of collaboration, unity and partnership with which we confronted the threat of the Ebola Virus Disease. I thank all Nigerians for working together to prevent what could have become a major epidemic. I particularly thank the medical personnel, some of whom made the ultimate sacrifice.

55. This is the spirit which we must demonstrate at all times as we face up to our challenges as a nation: one people, united by a common resolve, in the pursuit of one common national interest.

56. As we look forward to another year in our national life, I am more than confident that our tomorrow will be better than our yesterday and today. Nigeria has got the human and material resources to excel and we shall lead the way in that journey to our manifest destiny.

57. Fellow countrymen, brothers and sisters, in all our plans, and in all our words and our actions, we must stand together in love and unity, as one people under God.

58. We are one people from the womb of one Nigeria. We are brothers and sisters. We are one family. We are Nigerians.

59. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Justice629: Education is considered by many Nigerians to be the gateway to success and the passport to a better life. Debunking this myth that one cannot be successful without a formal education are these successful Nigerians who have been able to survive life’s challenges and cross the hurdle of a formal education to become who they are today. Take a look at some of Nigeria’s most successful individuals who didn’t have formal education or complete schooling experiences.

Vincent Obianobo:

This astute businessman had humble beginnings and not much education but today, he is one of Nigeria’s most successful businessmen.

Folorunsho Alakija:
