A newly wedded couple, Mr. & Mrs. Josiah Oyewo and 27 others were sentenced to three months imprisonment each by a Mobile Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State over violation of environmental sanitation offences. 

The court presided over by Magistrate Olubunmi Bamidele, handed down the sentences at the weekend for flagrant non compliance with the Ekiti State Environmental Sanitation Laws of 2004.

They were arrested by the Special Taskforce on sanitation during the August edition of the exercise held across the state.

The arrested persons, mainly travelers and hawkers, were apprehended by the officials of the environmental sanitation monitoring the exercise within Ado-Ekiti metropolis.

According to the charges, the accused persons were found roaming the major streets in the town during the exercise, contrary to Section 17 (h) of the Ekiti State Environmental Sanitation Laws of 2004 and punishable under same section.

The charges stated that the accused persons also failed to participate in the exercise as required by the Environmental Sanitation Edict of 2004 and punishable under the same section.

They also obstructed the enforcement officers of the Environmental Sanitation from performing their duty at various locations in the  state and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 20 of the Ekiti State Environmental Sanitation Laws of 2004 and punishable under same section.

After listening to the charges against the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs Bamidele, sentenced each of them to three months imprisonment with hard labour.

She, however, gave each of them an option of N5, 000 fine on each count charge in lieu of the sentence.

General Sani Abacha, was Nigeria’s former Head of State between 1993 and 1998.

Even though he is no more, General Sani Abacha has been humorously described as one of the ancestors of Nigeria who has been donating money generously to successive governments from the land of the dead as his loot was outrageous.

He’s a man of multiple impressions. To some people, he was an enigma. To others, he was humane. But to many, he was simply a mean dictator and the man who wore the thickest goggles in town. Yet, some quarters preferred him as a consummate soldier, leader par excellence, trailblazer, stabilizer and strategist.

On December 31, 1983 when the army removed then President Shehu Shagari from power to give way for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Abacha announced the power takeover.

He also co-announced the coming of the Babangida regime with Gen. Joshua Dogoyaro and it was in that regime that he served as the chief of the army staff.

On November 17, 1993, Abacha took the reins of power after sacking the Shonekan interim administration where he served as Defence Minister. From that day to June 7, 1998, Abacha reigned supreme and maximally.

Since he died, however, his name has continued to resonate for mostly the wrong reasons of corruption, fraud and financial embezzlement.

Loot
Many believe that his regime encouraged corruption by stashing away illicit funds in foreign bank accounts. One huge surprise about the saga, however, is that it’s been 22 years since Abacha passed on, yet government after government have continued to talk about Abacha loot.

Though it may be difficult to place a hand on the figure stolen and hidden in many offshore accounts, Transparency International once said Abacha may have stolen up to $5bn between 1993 when he assumed office and 1998 when he died.

Recoveries

The recovered monies were principally stashed away in four major countries:

Authorities of The Polytechnic, Ibadan (TPI), have asked both returning and new students of the institution to resume tomorrow (Monday).

The institution noted that this is necessary due to the commencement of the 2022/2023 academic session which begins tomorrow.

The institution made this disclosure via a statement signed by its Registrar, Modupe Fawole.

Fawole, in the statement made available to VOICESUIT on Sunday, advised both the returning and new students to resume tomorrow without wasting more time.

The Registrar while speaking further, noted that the need for the students to resume became necessary due to the commencement of the academic session which starts the same day.

She added that two-week registration for all students will commence on the same day and end on Monday, 29th August 2022.

Fawole, however, added that a one-week late registration with penalty will commence on Tuesday, 30th August and end on Monday, 5th September 2022.

She said, “The 2022/2023 academic session of the institution will commence on Monday, 15th August with the resumption of fresh and returning students.

“A two-week registration for all students will commence on the same day and end on Monday, 29th August 2022.

“While a one-week late registration with penalty will commence on Tuesday, 30th August and end on Monday, 5th September 2022”.

102-year-old woman from Darlington, South Carolina, USA, named Annie Mae Belin has disclosed why avoiding gossip is the key to a long life.

Momo Payment Service Bank Limited (Momo PSB), the fintech subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, has dragged 18 commercial banks to court to retrieve N22.3 billion “erroneously transferred to 8,000 bank customers”.

The company said the erroneous transfers were due to “system exploitation”.

According to reports, MoMo PSB experienced a major security breach barely a week after commencing operations, resulting in a N22 billion loss.

In a suit marked FHC/L/CS/960/2022 and filed on May 30, 2022, the PSB asked the court to declare that the deposits worth N22.3 billion belonged to it (Momo PSB) and not the banks’ customers.

The affected banks, listed as defendants in the suit, are Access Bank, Ecobank, Fidelity Bank, First Bank, First City Monument Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Heritage Bank, Polaris Bank and Providus Bank.

Others include StanbicIBTC, Standard Chartered, Sterling Bank, Suntrust Bank, Union Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), Unity Bank, Wema Bank and Zenith Bank.

The request formed part of the reliefs sought in the suit filed by Lotanna Okoli, a senior advocate of Nigeria, on behalf of MoMo PSB.

“A declaration that the deposits of an aggregate sum of N22,300,000,000.00 erroneously transferred by the plaintiff to the accounts of the customers of the defendant banks, having been done in error, belongs to the plaintiff and not the customers of the defendant banks,” the court filing reads.

“An order directing the defendant banks to each, individually, account for the sums available in their customers’ accounts and the sums which have been removed by the customers and are no longer available.

“An order directing the defendants’ banks to immediately return the aggregate sum of N22,300,000,000.00, less those funds that are no longer available, to the plaintiffs’ settlement account in the name MOMO PSB settlement account number: 2041379385 at First Bank Plc Samuel Asabia House 35 Marina, Lagos, from where the funds originated.

“An order directing the defendant banks to release all information, including account name information in respect of the accounts from which the plaintiff’s funds have been transferred to third parties, including the destination accounts and the banks in which they are held to assist in the tracing and recovery of those funds.”

In an affidavit supporting originating summons, Usoro Usoro, chief executive officer of MoMo PSB, said that on May 24, 2022, it was noticed that funds had been mistakenly transferred from its settlement account to various accounts in the banks.

Usoro further claimed that about 700,000 transactions were processed, with credits made into about 8,000 various accounts in the listed 18 banks.

Upon becoming aware of the incident, he said the MOMO PSB Ltd management responded by immediately shutting down the service to limit the impact.

He explained that the PSB engaged with the 18 banks for the commencement of recovery activities from the accounts of the various beneficiaries.

Usoro said MoMo PSB resorted to the court because of the insistence of the 18 banks that they needed a court order to reverse the deposits made into customers’ accounts.

The plaintiff, therefore, prayed the federal high court to compel the 18 commercial banks operating in the country to make refunds.

A thief left a "touching" note after stealing from the Church of Pentecost-English Assembly in the Bogoso District of the Western Region, Ghana.

The thief reportedly stole two amplifiers, a drive, and other valuables after members had closed from evening service.

Local news platforms reported that members of the church returned the following day only to discover that the auditorium has been ransacked. The thief also left a note written with a red ink.

The thief who asked for the blessings of God, stated that it is only Jesus who assisted a thief on the cross. He also stressed that he is not a hater of the church.

Presiding Elder of the church, Samuel Kumi, who confirmed the news, said Bogoso Police Command has officially launched investigations that could lead to the arrest of the thief.

The church has also made arrangements to employ the services of a security guard to avoid future occurrences.

Photos of the lady were posted on a Twitter account (Hafsa @wy_dee) on Saturday, June 18, however, it cannot be ascertained if she is the owner of the account or a catfish.

Reacting to the post, some Muslims criticised the lady for wearing 'such a dress,' saying that it's against the teaching of Qur'an.

Commenting under the post, one Abdullaziz Ibrahim said he will divorce the lady if she were his wife.

"If I 'm the husband you will get your divorce because of this dress to it to the world." he said.


"If this is called civilization, we prefer to die uncivilized, we have failed to prove the teaching of Quran and Sunnah" one Ahmad Adamu wrote.

The acting accountant-general of the federation (AGF) Anamekwe Nwabuoku, says Nigeria is borrowing money to pay salaries.

Nwabuoku said this on Tuesday, June 24, at a retreat organised by the office of the AGF for members of the technical sub-committee on cash management (TSCM) in Abuja.

He explained that there is an increase in government expenditure due to rising security challenges and the social needs of the citizenry.

“We have to borrow to augment payment of salaries and wages. This shows we are in very difficult times. Government income is highly challenged,” Nwabuoku said.

“The theme and objective of the retreat couldn’t have been better captioned, given the fiscal challenges at the moment. Records available indicate that due to dwindling revenues, the treasury had to resort to other sources to augment the payment of federal government public servants.

“There is an increase in government expenditure due to increasing security challenges and social needs of the citizenry.”

Nwabuoku said there should be deliberate efforts to revert the trend through fiscal discipline, economic diversification, export sector promotion and plunging revenue leakages, among others, to ensure revenue inflow.

He added: “Now that these challenges stare us in the face, you are all expected at this gathering to come out with ideas that will push us through.

“Therefore, we must all, at this retreat, strive towards identifying the challenges to revenue generation and other means of enhancing inflow into federal government cash box; ensuring the cutting down the cost of governance in the most acceptable way and ensuring synergy amongst and within stakeholders in the sub-committee.”
