PoliticsObama Takes Blame For Strike That Killed Two Hostages by midolian(op): 7:32pm On Apr 23, 2015
President Barack Obama revealed Thursday that an American and an Italian hostage were accidentally killed in a covert US counter-terrorism operation near the Afghan-Pakistan border in January, taking “full responsibility” for the tragedy.

A senior Al-Qaeda leader, an American, was also killed in the operation and the group’s English-language spokesman, US convert Adam Gadahn, died in a separate strike.

Lifting the lid on a previously classified finding, a solemn Obama expressed his “deepest apologies” to the families of 73-year-old economic advisor Warren Weinstein and aid worker Giovanni Lo Porto, 39.

Obama gave few details of the operation, which officials suggested was a drone strike that took place against an Al-Qaeda compound inside Pakistan.

“As president and as commander-in-chief, I take full responsibility for all our counter-terrorism operations, including the one that inadvertently took the lives of Warren and Giovanni,” he said.

“I profoundly regret what happened. On behalf of the United States government, I offer our deepest apologies to the families.

“It is a cruel and bitter truth that in the fog of war generally
and our fight against terrorists specifically, mistakes — sometimes deadly mistakes — can occur.”

Obama said he informed Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi personally about his administration’s findings.

Italy’s foreign ministry described the deaths as a “tragic and fatal error by our US allies” but said “terrorists” were entirely to blame.

But this is just the latest controversy around Obama’s counter-terrorism operations, which — while killing Osama bin Laden in a commando raid — have more often relied heavily on secret drone strikes.

Obama was quick to stress that “we do believe that the operation did take out dangerous members of Al-Qaeda.”

The White House said that Ahmed Faruq, an American described as a leader of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, was killed in the incident.

Another operation at around the same time in the same area killed Gadahn, a Californian who converted to Islam as a teenager and later travelled to Pakistan, becoming an Al-Qaeda spokesman and being indicted for treason.

The White House said neither man was specifically targeted.

“Since 9/11, our counterterrorism efforts have prevented terrorist attacks and saved innocent lives both here in America, and around the world,” Obama said.

– Face their God –

Despite Obama’s defense of his counter-terrorism record, Congressional leaders rapidly called for more oversight over the drone program.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein demanded an “annual report on the number of deaths, both combatant and civilian, from US strikes.”

Republican Senator John McCain said there must be a review of the incident, but indicated the drone program should continue.

“These new disclosures raise troubling questions about the reliability of the intelligence that the government is relying on to justify drone strikes,” said American Civil Liberties Union deputy legal director Jameel Jaffer.

“In each of the operations acknowledged today, the US quite literally didn’t know who it was killing.”

Weinstein was snatched after gunmen tricked their way into his home in Lahore on August 13, 2011 shortly before he was due to return home after seven years working in Pakistan.

He later appeared in a video in which, under apparent coercion, he asked the United States to free Al-Qaeda prisoners.

Weinstein’s widow said in a statement that “we are devastated by this news and the knowledge that my husband will never safely return home.”

“The cowardly actions of those who took Warren captive and ultimately to the place and time of his death are not in keeping with Islam and they will have to face their God to answer for their actions,” she said.

Lo Porto disappeared in January 2012 in Pakistan, just a few days into his second stint in the country. A native of Sicily, Lo Porto previously worked in Croatia, the Central African Republic and Haiti.

She White House said the United States would compensate the families’ of both men, but details have yet to be finalized.

PoliticsNNPC Pushes For Fuel Subsidy Removal by midolian(op): 6:14pm On Apr 23, 2015
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on Thursday, strongly advocated the complete halt in the  payment of subsidy on petrol.

Although the corporation admitted that it was aware of the massive nationwide protests and industrial actions that took place in January 2012 when the Federal Government announced the complete withdrawal of subsidy on petrol, it however maintained that the continued payment of subsidy was not sustainable.

Subsidy is the difference between the Expected Open Market Price of fuel and the actual or retail price that is paid by consumers for the product at petrol stations as regulated by the Department of Petroleum Resources.

The Group Coordinator, Corporate Strategy and Planning, NNPC, Mr. Timothy Okon, explained that since government does not control the prices of crude oil, its fluctuation often creates  fiscal instability in the country, a situation that impacts negatively on Nigeria’s revenue.

Okon spoke at the 2015 Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum  organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers in Abuja.

He noted that when crude oil prices came down to about $40 per barrel, subsidy was not paid during that period as the landing cost of the product was either equal of even lower than its market value.

Okon explained that subsidy on petrol creates uneven distribution of revenue, round tripping and unnecessary carry-over of funds from one year to another in a manner that was difficult to control by the Federal Government.

“So, from the technical analysis made, it is obvious that subsidy is real. And from our analysis, we look at it as something that should go because it is not sustainable,” he said.

Details later...

FamilyMy Wife Beats Me On Slight Provocation, Man Tells Court by midolian(op):
A 55- year-old retired civil servant, Mr Emmanuel Osuya, has asked an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, to dissolve his 32-year-old marriage over alleged battering by his wife. Osuya told the court on Wednesday that his wife, Abigeal Osuya, 50, had turned him into a punching bag.

He said she beat him on any slight provocation. Osuya told the court that his wife always threatened his life through battery that he was afraid she may kill him one day.  “My wife wants to kill me; she beat me almost every day with dangerous weapons. On three occasions, she broke my leg, preventing me from going out for days,’’ he said.

Osuya also accused his wife of turning his children against him, thereby making them to hate him. “Abigeal succeeded in creating enmity between me and my children, she tells them false and damaging stories about me in order to hate me. “So my children only care for her by sending her money and other items every month, without extending their love to me, they always ignore me as if I do not exist,’’ Osuya said.

The petitioner described his wife as a thief. He said that she always stole his money, rendering him financially broke. “I cannot keep money at home again because my wife will steal it. “ She acted as if she is not always satisfied with the money I give her in spite of the fact that my children always send her money every month,’’ the petitioner said.

Osuya said that Abigeal always starved him of food. He appealed to the court to dissolve the marriage, saying that “I am no longer interested in the marriage, I don’t want to die now, more so that I am out of love’’. Abigeal denied all the allegations. The mother of five said that she had never beaten her husband since the day she married him.

She said that it was her husband that always beat her. “It was my husband that always beat me on any slight provocation, I have never beaten him,” she said. The respondent also said that she had never stolen her husband’s money. Abigeal said that she used to cook for her husband wherever he gave her money for food.

She asked the court not to grant her husband’s prayer. “I am still in love with him,’’ she said. The Court President, Mr Hakeem Oyekan, adjourned the case till April 30 for further hearing.

PoliticsOby Ezekwesili Attends TIME 100 Gala, Wants Obama To Rescue Chibok Girls by midolian(op): 12:46pm On Apr 22, 2015
Former Minister of Education and Bring Back Our Girls campaigner, Obiageli Ezekwesili has called on President Barrack Obama to do more to help find the girls abducted by Islamist group Boko Haram.

“If he could get Osama bin Laden, he could get our girls,” she said.

Ezekwesili, who was named one of the world’s 100 most influe
ntial people in TIME’s annual issue this year, met with Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., and with Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, who runs a school for former child soldiers in Uganda, at the TIME 100 gala in New York City on Tuesday.

“It is time for someone as powerful as Barack Obama to compare the girls of Chibok to his own daughters. These girls are a symbol of our own message to girls, that they should be educated, that we would go beyond the call of duty for you,” she added.

Power said the U.S. was looking at ways to bolster the fight against Boko Haram, which has killed and kidnapped thousands in Nigeria over the past few months. “We’ve been looking at how to throw our weight behind an international force.”

Nyirumbe, who wrote on Ezekwesili for the 2015 TIME 100, said that the meeting between her, Ezekwesili and Power reminded her of “the power of women.”

“I would like to see a lot of people more involved in practical solutions to practical problems,” she said. “Women have got to the point where we can turn the world upside down.”

Other Nigerians who were named among the TIME 100 are President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, bestselling author, Chimamanda Adichie and Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.

PoliticsI Don’t Regret Statements I Made Before Elections –okupe by midolian(op): 2:37pm On Apr 21, 2015
Senior Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, has insisted that he has no regrets over all the statements he made before the conduct of the just-concluded elections.

Okupe, who posted this on his official Facebook page, said, “I have no regrets for any of the statements I made.

“Lai Mohammed said worse. This is the nature of politics. For anyone who cares to listen. We will be back, period.”

The post further read: “These are very interesting times in our nation. An election has come and gone. A victor has emerged and the loser has conceded.

“Yet some of our folks are behaving as if we have just gone through a war between two hostile nations.

“The APC agents all over the place are unrelenting in their tirades of abuses, insults and lies against President Goodluck Jonathan, his aides and supporters.

“It is shameful that we are still saddled with denying falsehood and fabrications in the social media and even by hitherto highly respected newspapers.

“Missing $20bn found in an account in Zenith. PGEJ returns tons of dollars to federation accounts. N2tn spent on elections by PGEJ. Okupe says Chibok girls will not be found.

“How many lies, deliberate falsehood and evil propaganda, outright curses and attacks must we suffer just because we lost an election in which we were never disgraced?

“Buhari polled 15m (56 per cent) while Jonathan scored 12m (46per cent). Those who talk to us disparagingly should respect the sentiments of the 12m Nigerians who voted for Jonathan.

“Of course, we have our reservations about the results but we will pass on that for now. We have lost this election, but this is not and can never be a crime.

“We are all Nigerians and having lost does not make us less. We should be allowed to bow out peacefully and constitutionally on the 29th of May.”

Okupe, who insisted that Buhari was not the type of leader Nigeria needs, further said: “Yes, I said Buhari was not electable. I also said his victory will not happen.

“I said and I still insist that Buhari has no WASC certificate. I said a lot of things to promote my candidate and many things to put his opponent down. President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, is not qualified to rule Nigeria.”

In another post, Okupe explained that one of the reasons why the Chibok girls were kidnapped was to present the Jonathan’s administration as incompetent and hold it to ransom against 2015 elections.

He also alleged that one of the reason the #BringBackOurGirls campaign was formed was to sustain and internationalise the embarrassment.

“One of the reasons President Jonathan lost the election was a national and international conspiracy predicted on this carefully choreographed and assiduously sustained perception.

“One of the issues that will be in the hand over notes will be the missing girls.

“What is reasonable and expedient for well meaning men and women of good conscience is to dialogue with the incoming administration on what best new approach to employ to find and rescue the Chibok girls.

“Not much can be achieved, except mischief, by continuing to flog this administration on this matter. I rest my case,” Okupe added.
