An instruction to the Rivers State commissioner of police from the Inspector General of Police has cleared the way for northern governors on a solidarity visit to Rivers to leave the airport. The visitors were holed up in the VIP lounge of the airport due to a sponsored protest by forces loyal to Nigeria's president Goodluck Jonathan and his wife outside the airport. Rivers state officials told SaharaReporters said they were already planning to use helicopters to bring the governor and his solidarity visitors to the government house but later changed the plan after they received assurances from the police IGP that more policemen had been deployed to protect lives and property. Mr. Amaechi and the visiting governors traveled in the same car with their respective police details massed around the special car to drive safely out of the airport to the government house. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/northern-governors-solidarity-visit-amaechi-safely-driven-government-house

Protesters, believed to be acting at the behest of elements opposed to Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday pelted the motorcade of four northern governors who are currently on a solidarity visit to Port Harcourt. The protesters had besieged the airport shortly before the arrival of Governors Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) at the Port Harcourt International Airport. Chanting anti-Amaechi slogans, the protesters berated the governors for intervening in Rivers state’s internal crisis. The three governors, our sources say, however remained at the VIP Lounge of the airport for about an hour waiting for Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, to arrive. After Governor Aliyu arrived, the governor drove out of the airport in a waiting motorcade provided by their host. But as their cars drove out of the airport and headed towards the Rivers State Government House, the protesters became violent pelting the motorcade with stones, water bottles, sticks and other items. However, the governors arrived the Government House safe, without any major incident, and are now holding a closed-door meeting with Mr. Amaechi. The visiting governors have been firm supporters of the embattled Rivers governor. Insiders say they are visiting in the wake of the recent state-sponsored unrest, to which many commentators have pointed accusing fingers at federal authorities. Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate and professor of literature, at a press conference in Lagos last week cautioned Patience Jonathan, wife of President Jonathan, against invasively inserting herself in the politics of the state, and working secretly as matron to forces trying to unseat Mr. Amaechi and make the state ungovernable. Mrs. Jonathan has denied the claims, drawing wide amusement when he described the Nobel Laureate as an “embarrassment.” The Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, also reportedly arrived Port Harcourt on Tuesday. Mr. Wike, an indigene of Rivers State, has been accused of being an arrowhead of the anti-Amaechi group. The Rivers State Governor has been having a running battle with the presidency over his stance on major public issues. He has since been suspended from the PDP. The crisis in the state worsened last week when five state lawmakers, loyal to the presidency, attempted to impeach the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The speaker and 26 other lawmakers are loyal to Mr. Amaechi, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum. The violent crisis in the assembly was widely publicised on television and social media. Mr. Amaechi has since called for the redeployment of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police who is accused of playing a partisan role in the crisis. Efforts to reach the Rivers Information Commissioner, Ibim Semenitari, on the details of the governors’ visit have been unsuccessful as she is yet to answer our calls. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/141069-anti-amaechi-protesters-stone-northern-governors-on-solidarity-visit-to-rivers.html |

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State today personally foiled an attempt to impeach the Speaker of the state House of Assembly. The speaker, Otelemaba Amachree, had convened a session of the legislature in order to amend certain portions of the Rivers State budget. The session followed a prolonged crisis in the state caused by schemes by President Goodluck Jonathan to impeach Mr. Amaechi, who is deemed an impediment to the president’s ambition to seek a second term. Two lawmakers loyal to Mr. Amachree told Saharareporters that speaker sensed there was trouble in the air after he sent letters summoning members to today’s session. “The speaker now sent a message to the state commissioner of police and the brigade commander and leader of the Joint Task Force to ask for security to enable the house [to] sit,” said one of the lawmakers. The other legislative source added that, unknown to the speaker, five renegade members of the assembly loyal to President Jonathan had met with the commissioner of police overnight and arranged to come prepared to impeach the speaker. “When we arrived at the state assembly today, we were surprised to see a huge number of military men and well armed policemen,” said the source. SaharaReporters learnt that trouble soon started as a member of the house, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, representing Ogu/Bolo constituency arrived with thugs, pounced on the house leaders, Michael Chinda and Chidi Lloyd, while the police and the military kept their distance. Our sources said when Governor Amaechi heard of the fracas and the refusal of the police and members of the JTF to intervene, he rushed to the house with his aides and armed escorts and succeeded in rescuing members of the house loyal to him. As the governor and the majority of the legislators were leaving the site of the mayhem, they discovered that five renegade members of the house empowered by President Jonathan had seized the mace. They then ran back to retrieve the mace from the minority group, our sources said. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/chaos-rivers-state-house-assembly-%E2%80%9Cfive-lawmakers%E2%80%9D-attempt-impeach-speaker |
Attempt by five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Amachree was foiled today, resulting in a free-for all at the chambers of the House. In the ensuing fracas, some members of the House, including the Leader, Hon. Chidi Lloyd and Hon. Michael Chinda were injured. As at the time of filing the report, Chinda, who represents Obio/Akpor Constituency, was still in the intensive care unit of Saint Patricks' Hospital, Port Harcourt. - See more at: http://leadership.ng/news/090713/lawmakers-foil-attempt-impeach-rivers-speaker-fails#sthash.MsTvQkV8.dpuf |
There was free-for-all yesterday at the Rivers State House of Assembly between pro and anti-Amaechi lawmakers. The five lawmakers loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, initially impeached the Speaker, Otelemaba Dan Amachree, with a new Speaker, Evans Bapakaye Bipi, who represents Ogu/Bolo constituency, elected as the new speaker. As Bipi mounted the speaker’s seat to give his acceptance/maiden speech, the Rivers Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), stormed the main chambers of the Assembly, with Amachree, other loyal lawmakers and security men, leading to exchange of fisticuffs. In the course of fighting with dangerous weapons, the Speaker and Leader of the House, Chidi Lloyd, a lawyer, who represents Emohua constituency and loyal to Amaechi were injured. Lloyd is still in the hospital. Also seriously injured were two anti-Amaechi lawmakers: Martins Amewhule and Michael Okechukwu Chinda, and also hospitalised, with anti-Amaechi lawmakers sacked from the House. When the punching eventually subsided, the House later sat amid tight security, with 23 pro-Amaechi lawmakers in attendance and presided over by Amachree. Amaechi left immediately. Rivers Deputy Governor, Tele Ikuru, an engineer, was later ushered into the Assembly chambers and he presented minor adjustments to the 2013 budget, on behalf of Amaechi. Speaker said the amendment would not affect the earlier figure of N490 billion. Shortly after Ikuru left, the House was tadjourned indefinitely, in view of the tension. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news-update/free-for-all-fight-in-rivers-assemby/ |
