Satisfied with the level of work carried out by army engineers in the reconstruction of internal roads within the Barracks at Onitsha, Governor Peter Obi Friday presented another cheque of N100 Million Naira to the Army, bringing it to N200 million given to them so far for the project. Presenting the cheque, the Governor said that it was in line with the policy of his Government to work with all the Federal agencies in the State on the reason that all of them ultimately serve the good of the State and her people. He regretted that before he became Governor, it was a cat and mouse relationship between Anambra Government and Security agencies in the State and that the State suffered because of that. “If you remember, in that reckless era, the State was burnt down. But I can assure you that with the level of civility we have restored, such a thing would not happen again, the Governor said. He also urged the army to continue to utilize the funds properly. He said that Government was about collaboration with organizations of goodwill that were willing to make sacrifices for the good of the people. Using the Church as one organization working closely with the State, the Governor said that since schools were returned to the Church and money given to them directly to rehabilitate the schools, the State had never been the same again. The Governor stated that his Government was committed to the upgrade of Onitsha, saying that besides the roads, he would return to the barracks for the rehabilitation of their schools. Receiving the cheque, the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika said he decided to come in person because Governor Obi was doing remarkably well for the his State and the Army. He said he had received tremendous support from him since his appointment unlike in the past. He said that Anambra State was now enjoying peace under the leadership of Governor Obi. The Chief of Staff commended the Commander of the 302 Artillery Regiment under the Command of Col TA Gagariga, under whom old vehicles were rehabilitated. He assured that his Office would continue to offer support to all military formations in the country. |

A retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Adebayo Adeoye, on Friday, said the police team that first arrived at the home of the late Funsho Williams met his room disorganised. Mr. Adeoye testified before Justice Adeniyi Adebajo of an Igbosere High Court in Lagos in the trial of six persons alleged to have murdered Mr. Williams, a gubernatorial candidate in Lagos. Mr. Williams was the People’s Democratic Governorship candidate for the 2003 general elections. He was murdered on July 26, 2006 at his residence at Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos. The accused are, Bulama Kolo, Musa Maina, David Cassidy, Tunani Sonani, Mustapha Kayode and Okponwasa Imariabie, all male. The retired DIG said that the disorganised room indicated that a scuffle occurred before Williams was murdered. Mr. Adeoye was examined by the Prosecution Counsel, O.A. Akin-Adesomojo. He said that he visited the scene of the crime on July 27, 2006, following a directive by the then Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero. He told the court that his team met a large crowd outside the deceased’s residence and was led to the room where it found his body lying face down, hands tied and blindfolded, with blood on the floor. “We didn’t touch anything because we were expecting forensics, but we kept looking for the point of entry, and moved to the adjacent flat which was empty. “While searching the flat, we saw footprints on the wall and a green rope. But we didn’t conclude that it was the point of entry because we were not sure yet,’’ the former police chief said. Mr. Adeoye told the court that he was an Assistant Inspector-General of police at the time of the incident. “Later in the day, the four policemen who were on duty on the night of the incident were arrested and their statements were taken before we handed over to the Force Headquarters, Abuja,” he said. During cross examination, Defence Counsel, Agbara Okezie, asked the witness if any of the four arrested policemen was among the six accused. Mr. Adeoye said that he could not recollect their faces. Mr. Okezie also asked if the witness saw any mattress with footprints at the scene of the crime. He also inquired whether the two security guards in the house on the night of the incident were arrested. The former police chief replied: “I did not see any mattress with footprints and I don’t know if any other security guards were arrested.” After the cross examination, the prosecution counsel applied for adjournment to enable her produce another witness; but Mr. Okezie objected to the application. The defence counsel said that the court could not continue to wait for prosecution witnesses. However, Mr. Adebajo granted the application for adjournment, saying: “the court has to be flexible because of the nature of the charge. I will not rush them beyond their pace.” “The further trial of this charge is adjourned to Sept. 26.” The defendants were first arraigned on March 1, 2013 before Justice Adebajo on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder. The defendants, according to the charge, on or about July 27, 2006, at 34A, Corporation Drive, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, conspired to murder Mr. Williams. The offence contravenes Sections 316 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Nigeria recorded a 50 per cent decline in the number of polio cases in the second quarter of this year. This is contained in a statement signed and issued on Wednesday in Abuja by Mr Geoffery Njoku, a Communication Specialist at UNICEF. ``Nigeria is making progress toward the target of stopping polio. To date in 2013, Nigeria has reported a 50 per cent decline in the number of cases with 25 cases in nine states, compared to 54 cases in 10 states for the same period in 2012.’’ The statement noted that more than 60 per cent of the cases in 2013 occurred in the security-compromised areas of Borno and Yobe states which offered limited access to children for vaccination. It said that Nigeria’s polio programme had surged forward and was making progress as outlined by recent report of the global Independent Monitoring Board for polio eradication. ``This is coupled with a substantive investment and efforts to improve routine immunisation, with the development of a new routine immunisation framework and the Save One Million Lives Initiative lead by the government of Nigeria.'' It said that the number of un-immunised children through routine immunisation had declined in the past several months due to increased focus on improved routine services. ``The WHO and UNICEF are committed to continue supporting the government of Nigeria in their effort to improve the well-being of women and children,’’ the statement added.(NAN) leadership.ng/news/190613/Nigeria-records-50-cent-decline-polio-second-quarter-2013-unicef
