In my opinion the reasons given here are hardly adequate.
PatrickOkunima: Unemployment is a huge problem in Nigeria of today. There just seem not to be enough jobs for the teeming population of graduates and job seekers. It has become the proverbial “many are called few are chosen” thing. There are many graduates that apply for jobs almost every day yet they wonder why they don’t get invited for interviews or aptitude tests. The fact is their countless job applications might have been turned down due to one or more of the following reasons. So what are these obstacles and how can you avoid them as a job seeker?
1. Applying for every available job
To some job seekers, it’s all about quantity. They believe that your chances of getting an invite increases with the number of CVs you send. They tend to care less whether or not they are qualified or eligible for such positions. It’s more of the “try your luck” thing. Interestingly they are surprised that they are not getting invited for interviews and tests.
2. Defeatist mindset
One of the common excuses among Nigerian job seekers who fail in their job search is “you will never get a job until you know somebody”. While it is true that in Nigeria of today who you know matters, I sincerely believe that it is over exaggerated. The average company still offers merit-based employment. No serious company would want to populate her workforce with mediocre. Not everyone on the company’s payroll is a member of the MD’s family or his/her relative. When a candidate fails in his/her efforts to get a job by merit they turn around and lay the blame on their lack of connection.
3. Lack of good networking skills
Life is all about networking. Networking is one of the most easiest and effective way to get a good job in Nigeria. You would be surprised at the number of vacancies that are not advertised in the public media. How do such companies recruit staff? By referral and word of mouth of course. The good thing here is that the usual crowd that is a common occurrence in the publicized job adverts is non-existent here. So if you do not know how to effectively network, your chances of lingering long in the job market is very high.
4. Reluctance to volunteer or intern
The mindset of the average job seeker is they see job opportunity as a way to make big money. They would most likely turn down an opportunity to volunteer or intern if they are very sure that there will not be any financial reward in it for them. What they however fail to realize is that most companies would prefer a candidate that have volunteered or interned to one without any experience at all. Volunteering is one quick and easy way to gain the much needed work experience that most job seekers are not considering.
5. Inability to make a positive impression during interviews
This is about the major reason why most job seekers do not land the job. You have just a few minutes to make a lasting impression on the minds of your interviewers. Inability to do this will lead to the infamous but common response “you’ll hear from us later” which they never do. Employers are more interested in where and how you can add value to their organization and not everything that you’ve done. Consider an interview as a movie trailer and not a season film.
As the trade battle continues, CNN gives us the chronology of how it all started. The countries with the two biggest economies are threatening huge tariffs against one another as the world waits anxiously by to see if a trade war will materialize. The latest salvo came Thursday, when President Donald Trump called for imposing $100 billion in new tariffs on Chinese products.
But a potential trade war between the US and China has been brewing for almost a year.

SMARTASSET.COM April 2017 — Trump launches investigation into steel imports
President Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to bring manufacturing and jobs back to the United States, directs the Department of Commerce to investigate whether imports of foreign steel from China and other countries could be a threat to national security.
August 2017 — Another investigation tightens the screws on China
Trump launches a second government probe explicitly targeting China. He asks US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to look into unfair China's trade practices, with a particular focus on alleged Chinese theft of US intellectual property.
The government agency later estimates that intellectual property theft by China costs the US "between $225 billion and $600 billion" every year.
China's state-run media says the probe will "poison" the relationship between the two countries, while the Chinese government later slams the Trump administration's "unilateralism and protectionism."
A quiet few months
The Trump administration's threats against China, including the two probes, don't lead to tangible action over the rest of 2017 as Trump shows restraint amid a budding relationship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
However, experts warn that 2018 could be a different story, calling a trade war between the two gargantuan economies increasingly likely.
January 2018 — First, solar panels and washing machines
The first major trade action against China comes at the beginning of the year, when the US announces a 30% tariff on imported solar panels -- most of which come from China -- and taxes on large residential washing machines starting at 20%.
China expresses "strong dissatisfaction" over the decision, adding that it "aggravates the global trade environment."
Other affected countries, including South Korea and Mexico, threaten varying degrees of retaliation to the tariffs.
February 2018 — Commerce Department proposes tariffs
The department, led by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, proposed a range of tariffs in February 2018 including 24% on steel and 7.7% on aluminum.
While US steelmakers supported tariffs on their foreign counterparts, much of Corporate America warned that they could backfire and ignite a trade war.
China said it will "take necessary measures to defend our rights" if it is hit with tariffs.
March 9, 2018 -— Trump imposes tariffs on steel imports
Trump follows through on the tariffs recommended by his commerce department, taxing steel imports at 25% and imported aluminum at 10%.
US neighbors Canada and Mexico are exempted from the tariffs, with Trump saying other countries could potentially receive similar exemptions if they can "ensure that their products no longer threaten our security."
China, the world's biggest steel exporter, calls the tariffs "a serious attack" on international trade and says it will take "firm action" if Chinese businesses suffer losses as a result.
April 2, 2018 — China hits back
Beijing imposes tariffs on US imports worth around $3 billion, including a 15% duty on 120 American products including fruits, nuts, wine and steel pipes and a 25% tax on eight others, like recycled aluminum and pork.
The Chinese government says its tariffs are specifically in response to the US trade measures against steel and aluminum.
One of the notable casualties of the Chinese tariffs is a US company that's owned by China. Virginia-based Smithfield Foods, the world's biggest pork producer, will likely be hit hard. Shares in China's WH Group, which owns Smithfield, have plunged more than 11% since the tariffs were first proposed two weeks ago.
April 3, 2018 — US threatens to target another $50 billion in Chinese goods
Trump's next set of potential tariffs comes barely 24 hours after China's first retaliation. In response to the August 2017 investigation into Chinese intellectual property theft, the US Trade Representative proposes a 25% tax on close to 1,300 Chinese goods from the aerospace, machinery and medical industries.
April 4, 2018 — China warns of tariffs on another $50 billion in American goods
The Chinese government announces yet another set of retaliatory tariffs that nearly mirror the Trump administration's proposal a day earlier -- 25% on a range of products from the US, worth approximately $50 billion.
The 106 products on China's list include aircraft and automobiles as well as soybeans and chemicals.
Global markets have been hit hard by the Chinese announcement, as have the products on the list and the companies making them.
April 5, 2018 — Trump calls for targeting another $100 billion in Chinese goods
The stock market enjoys a day of gains as investors warm to the idea that most of the back-and-forth between Beijing and Washington is nothing but talk.
But Trump then makes a late-day statement calling for the broadest wave of new tariffs yet — $100 billion worth. He asks US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to look into which products his administration can target.
China warns it would retaliate to any additional tariffs, saying it has "already formulated very detailed countermeasures."
US stock markets are rattled. The Dow closes down 572 points, or 2.3%, on April 6 after falling as much as 767 points earlier in the day.
This is another reason. I shared this shortly before WAEC vindicated me. For those that are in teaching field, you can attest to this. Some weeks back, WAEC banned the use of private school teachers to conduct its exams. To show that most private schools are surviving by cheating during exam in order to justify the "killer school fees," they kicked against it. What I mean here is that it does not matter what is in your CV because of the corruption in Nigeria. Schools that are into this don't care about who they employ since they can easily bribe those invigilators and cheat during exam.
Just as some Nigerians are attempting a dangerous hegira across the Mediterranean, some Mexicans were once entering US through tunnel in order to circumvent immigration rules. This was later discovered some years back when the tunnel which they used was busted. This present government led by Trump has engaged a powerful helicopter on duty 24 hours in order to stop Mexicans who are coming to the state illegally.
PatrickOkunima: Hi guys, I am back again, and I am that Human Resource Specialist with more than 10 years experience. I am here to continue giving insider tips on what goes on at the back-end after we’ve received thousands of applications from zealous job seekers.
Have you ever had an experience like this?
- You see a job role you are well qualified for.
- Then you decide to apply.
- You pick your CV and quickly fill out the necessary details on the job search form.
- You scribble down some words as your cover letter.
- Then you click the send button and check your Email every day, hoping to get a call back – yet nothing happens.
In most cases, the job advert might have come with a lucrative salary, and you wouldn’t want to be left out. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and yet you hear nothing from the advertisers of the job. Boom!!! Game over for you on that job.
This same thing happens to you on other job adverts, and you assume that you are under attack from your village kindred. This might be the last time I will tell you this, so make sure you take action.
I will show you several reasons why you don’t get interviews after submitting your applications. It might be simple to you, but you should find a way to fix it ASAP.
Your CV looks like a Battleground
When I mean battleground, I mean it literally. Most simply don’t know how to write a CV; and instead of employing the services of a professional CV writer, they go ahead to just write that way.
You don’t play trial and error with something as important as your CV which is your professional personality on paper. Writing of CV should have a very clear format with specific procedures.
When I pick up a CV, there are certain areas I look out for. If I can’t capture it within the first 5 secs, I drop the CV so fast. This might actually be one of the reasons why you don’t get interviews after your job applications.
Downloading Sample Formats from the Internet
The same format you are about downloading has been downloaded by several other users. These same users will apply for the same job – in most cases, and we Human Resource Managers will get the same CV format from several people.
So remember; before you check up on Google, other people have done the same and the same format is getting saturated.
Writing your CV with a mobile phone
If you don’t have a laptop to help draft your CV, I encourage you to get someone to help you do it. Unless you’re confortable getting a job as a bar man, then you should stop reading and focus on other things.
No Human Resource Manager opens a CV with his phone. The truth is that when you format a CV with a mobile phone, the layout comes out completely haggard when viewed from a computer.
N.B: Please don’t ask a cyber café girl to help you design a CV; they have little or no idea of the 7-seconds rule of crafting a CV. I suggest you employ the services of a professional to help you to do justice to it.
Your CV isn’t tailored to any Job Role
Most times when I pick up CVs from my desk to scrutinize, I see CVs that has more than 7 job roles in it. When you do this, it simply means one thing; “You don’t come out as a professional in any career sector.” And unless you are pretty luck, no one would send you an invite for an interview.
You should be a master of a job sector in your CV, that make you come out as a pro in the eyes of employers.
Here is a quick question: “Would you hire a jack of all trade for an important position, or an expert in such position?” Your answer is as good as mine. The same way you feel are exactly the same way employers feel when they see such a resume.
Getting interview invites should be the least worries of any job seeker. But if your Professional Personality (CV) isn’t good looking, you may have a hard time scaling through. I have written and I have seen exceptional CVs, and I believe you deserve one.
Watch-out for my next post, "How To Write A CV Without Prior Work Experience."
There is one thing you don't understand also. CV is not the cause in most cases. Nigerian factor is ninety per cent of the problem. If you doubt it, go and try FG work. Tailor your CV in a way it will fit the job and struggle it out with those that have insiders. Just try it and come give us feedback here.
His name is Junior Lokosa. He plays for Kano pillars. He has scored consecutively fourteen goals which is averagely one goal per match. The NPFL is currently in week 14 and he has scored in all matches.
I guess you are not an educationist to say that. We have graduate assistant lecturing jobs for degree holders that even finished as second class lower credit holders
Mires: I sympathise with you any way. However, why do you anticipate to attract a lectureship position in a university with BSc in a country where PhDs are unemployed? In addition, BSc is not qualified to lecture in a university. Some people happened to be employed because of their academic performance and who they know. Even at that, the min NUC requirement for such class of people is 2.1 and they are to proceed to MSc immediately.
Your argument is baseless. No one in his right sense will do that.
Princedaniel: PDP was going to rig the election and so the greedy odoh quickly struck a deal with the Umahi on the eve of the election.
A so called professor of geophysics could not stand his ground and go to court should inec announce wrong results.
It even hurts more that he's a youth.
Gutless and very greedy human being. He disappointed thousands of electorates. But he didn't know Umahi practices the whole 48 laws of power. Of which one is to crush your enemy totally. Hehe
Though I praised her for not terminating the pregnancy when she was impregnated, but now I don't like the burden she has brought to our family. Some years back, she was impregnated by yet to be known guy (she knows the guy in question). She came home with the pregnancy and gave birth to a baby boy. Seven years after she is still living with us and has refused to pack to where she belongs. This is even as I was told that the young man responsible has been calling her on phone to return to him. I was told that the young man was willing to come and introduce himself but she refused. This was read in her cellphone while she was away. Folks, what would you do if your sister refuse to leave as in this case? I'm running out of patience because I've endured her staying together with us for a very long time. Moreover she has no inheritance in my culture. The whole thing has been willed to me.
My problem is that the society is designed for few men in power to be stronger than the populace. Just think of what would happen if every Nigerian stage enough is enough protest. The so called power service provider will have no choice than to comply. I was told of a man that paid to the bank and those collecting money in the office were not happy with him. This is to say that they are pocketing the money in most cases.
LilNetty: The form will be out by August The form is #10, 000 Acceptance fee.. #40, 000 School fee per session.. #107, 500 There are some other petty payment Sha Transport fare too wan kee me
My advice to you is to find any school that is affordable. Those of us that perused a career in education are regretting it after paying high only to graduate and end up not earning high. I did my PT in a school in Lagos and it was the higher you go the higher you pay type. The last school fees I paid in my 500 level was N120k. Today that same school is charging something not less than N200k! But they are the one feeling it because the population has been reduced compared to our days. Just imagine a school that used to have four hundred in a class that cannot boast of fifty in a class now. Before I digress, get a school that is affordable and don't select based on the school profile. It does not matter where you graduate from. And lastly, don't pay much for education because Nigerians don't value teachers.
Argument ensued some days back about this Isaiah's prophecy. Some said it has been fulfilled, some said it is now (one even cited the Ikeja shoprite example), and some said it is still ahead. So who is right here?
News reaching me says WAEC has done the needful. Over the years, some private school proprietors have been indirectly aiding and abetting examination malpractice. This they do by engaging the service of teachers who assist the exam candidates in the hall. Many teachers have been fired for not soiling their hand in this very act.
WizzPoll: That team yesterday did not play to the capacity of our super eagles
we played the whole first half with only one midfielder Wilfred Ndidi
Iheanacho refuses to play number 10 when put in that role, he gets drawn to the post too much and leaves the midfield short. Iheanacho is better off as substitute striker/goal poacher to come on 70 or 80 minutes into play!
Joel Obi is not a great midfielder. midfield is not about leg over and being able to dribble, Toni Kroos does none of those but he is very effective in midfield, same with Fernandinho or Debruyne. When Onazi came in our play changed because he is always available to receive the ball from defenders, always checks over his shoulders to see where others are and passes the ball before the opponent closes in. Joel Obi goes to sleep until he receives the ball and then he tries to dribble his way out of trouble, this is the simple reason why he gets injured too much.
For Serbia match Iwobi should start as number 10, Ndidi and Onazi as central midfielders, the pacy Musa, Simon Moses and Victor Moses (Junior Ajayi) should form a front 3.
Joel Obi's left foot should be tested at left back to see if he could be of any use to the squad in that respect. As far as midfield goes I don't think Joel Obi comes close to Onazi or Ndidi or Mikel or Ogu or even Etebo
Uzoho should remain in goal for all our friendlies to help build his confidence ahead of the world cup. He is our best choice keeper for now.
To all guys out there, St. Saviour's school, Ikoyi does not accept CV from male applicants. I was there and was told that they only employ female teachers. Please don't waste your hard-earned money going there to apply. My next post will be on schools that don't accept CVs on the school premises i.e you must go to their HR department to submit.
All these is to save ones time and energy because it is not easy for a job seeker to go out looking for a job.
