Without apology to any Nairalander, I feel it is high time we began to have a round peg in a round hole, hence I am proposing for change in politics section; Becomrich as the moderator of the forum.

Now, the point I am making is that it is impossible to discuss the politics forum of Nairaland without putting Becomrich in clear perspectives, go round and see his contributions and well articulate Google maps, we have several posters, I am not talking about the ones that do not back up their post, there are posters all over Nairaland crying for attention, they don’t deserve Nairaland attention rather what they do is to invade the site and take over discussions.

I thought this is a bit funny and felt I should share and probably put a smile on one or two faces,

A man who makes caskets was going to deliver one of his coffins when his vehicle broke down. Trying not to be late, he put the coffin on his head and began heading to his destination. Men of the Nigerian Police at a checkpoint saw him and wanted to make some money off him so they challenged him: "where u dey carry dat thing go?" Trust the man who wouldn't part with his hard - earned money,  "I no like the place where dem bury me so I dey try relocate",  omo police no wait

What should we expect when the educational requirement for even the highest political office in the country is School Certificate (one P8)? If presidential consent and assent are required for our laws, does commonsense not tell our senseless legislators that same are needed to amend our laws and grundnorm? Except we step up the educational requirements, our political office holders will continue to reason like wild carnivores that always want to harm or kill and eat even stronger animals.

Madman in A Tete-a-tete with Obasanjo. This should have been the right caption. He wants a good explanation from a man who ruled this country twice for more than 12years, how he did it that he became homeless when some other people have choices houses of more than 120 in Nigeria, dubai, etc. A single room and palour and a job with salary of N50,000 monthly could have prevented this.

Dapo, I may not have contributed to this post but I have been following it since inception. I must confess that I am overwhelmed by your articulation and your stance on what you believe is the truth. I wish you all the best in your future endeavour and the change you crave for.

Sure, the changes may require you to utilize your public relations skills when people inevitably ask you, “What happened?” But like any good P.R. representative, you’ll already have your response prepared based on the information that you choose to release to the public. They don’t have to know everything about why you decided to make changes in your plan; but what they should know is that you’ve taken the steps in order to put yourself in an even better position to achieve your goal.

Have a blessed day.
Politics › 2011: We ’ll Drive Pdp Out Of South-west -tinubu by MiKenny(op): 11:29am On Oct 28, 2010
The recent loss of power by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) may be the beginning of the end of the ruling party in the South-West as the 2011 elections draw near with the former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, declaring that the PDP has finally lost the South-West in the coming election.

In a chat with airport correspondents at the presidential lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, on Wednesday, Tinubu said that the ruling party would meet its waterloo in the South-West in the coming elections if the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, conducted free and fair elections.

Tinubu, who said PDP was not on the ground in Lagos State, while speaking on the lessons to be learnt from the reversal of PDP’s victory in Ekiti State in favour of the ACN said the lesson was simply “perseverance, belief in constitutional democracy and believe that where you can syndicate the truth is the court.”

Reacting to the muscle flexing by the PDP that it will capture Lagos State in 2011, he declared: “I don’t know where the PDP is in Lagos; we will allow them to cry, since 1998, PDP has been crying ‘take over’, ‘tsunami’, ‘capture’, ‘conquer’, we said we are not at war or in slavery, they are a chop and let chop party, they don’t exist in Lagos, it’s a party without a single councillor in Lagos.

“We are going to drive PDP away from the South-West in 2011; PDP will lose South-West, with one man, one vote, true electoral principle, constitutional democracy, a reliable electoral register, a well planned election, if Jega’s integrity that he puts forward is anything that he must protect, then PDP is gone from South-West.”

Politics › EFCC's tactics unconsitutional - Atiku by MiKenny(op): 8:19am On Oct 26, 2010
By Emmanuel Aziken, Ben Agande & Henry Umoru

LAGOS — FORMER Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of re-inventing unconstitutional tactics earlier outlawed by the courts in its proposals to stop certain politically-exposed persons from contesting the 2011 elections.

Atiku’s reaction came as the Peoples Progressive Alliance, PPA, said it was not bound by the advisory as regarding its reputed founder and presidential aspirant, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.

National chairman of the party told Vanguard that the relevant organ of the party would have to meet and take a decision on the issue.

Reacting to the advisory issued by EFCC to some political parties to bar certain politicians from contesting the election, Atiku said neither the EFCC nor the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, could bar anyone from contesting the election.

Among those listed in the advisory are former Abia State Governor, Chief Orji Kalu; Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, PDP, Ogun Central; and former Oyo State Governor, Rasheed Ladoja.

Also on the list is Senator Saminu Turaki, who like all others mentioned in the advisory, are presently enmeshed in criminal cases instigated by EFCC.

… EFCC yet to inform us, says PDP

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA—THE national leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said yesterday that it has not received any letter from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, listing forwarding the names of those found to be corrupt and cannot contest the 2011 general elections.

Answering questions from journalists in Abuja yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, noted that PDP cannot pass judgment on whether somebody was guilty or not against the backdrop that as a party, it was not a court of law.

He said: “That is why in the process of looking at all the issues involved, there must be proper consultations and discussions at every level so that everybody will be comfortable with whatever is the outcome.

“About two or three weeks ago, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) under the chairmanship of Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo had a meeting with the Chairman of EFCC, Mrs Farida Waziri.”

Politics › I Don’t Have A Godfather – Fashola by MiKenny(op): 8:14am On Oct 26, 2010
LAGOS—Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, weekend, dropped a bombshell on the public perception of him being a stooge of his former boss, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying he (Tinubu) is not a godfather to him but a political mentor.

It will be recalled that the public and the media had been awash with different versions of stories on the frosty relationships between the incumbent Governor Fashola and his predecessor, Tinubu, which was finally buried following intervention by prominent personalities.

Fashola made the remarks on Sunday while answering questions from the audience at a grand house reception in his honour as well as to mark the Nigeria 50 independence anniversary held at the Coliseum, Night Shift event place in Lagos.

He said: “I do not have a godfather. I have a political mentor in our Governor Emeritus, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and I respect him a lot.

“I want to acknowledge a man who is so important in my life, an inspirational leader He was the one who gave me the opportunity of public service for a very first time in my life.”

Politics › SSS Detention Almost Broke My Spirits - Dokpesi by MiKenny(op): 8:10am On Oct 26, 2010
“I was kept for very long hours with a man as hefty as Mighty Igor by my side”

DIRECTOR-GENERAL, Ibrahim Babangida Campaign Organisation, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has said that his arrest by the State Security Service (SSS), in connection with the October 1 bomb blasts in Abuja almost broke his spirits following the nature of psychological intimidation he was allegedly subjected to while being kept in custody.

He recounted his ordeal when he led the IBB Campaign team to the corporate headquarters of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, publishers of the Tribune titles, on a courtesy visit, on Monday, noting that the security operatives only asked questions not directly linked with the issues at stake.

The IBB Campaign coordinator described the Tribune titles as the most respected political newspapers in Nigeria with their strong commitment to the ideals laid by its founder, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said of all Nigerian newspapers, his day would not be complete without reading a copy of the Tribune newspaper, as, according to him, the newspaper was the first he must read on a daily basis.

The Tribune management, led by the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Reverend Samuel Adesua; Editor, Nigerian Tribune, Mr Edward Dickson; Managing Editor, Weekend Titles, Mr Sunday Olajide and Editor, Sunday Tribune, Alhaji  Debo  Abdulai were on hand to receive Dokpesi and members of his entourage.

Dokpesi said the experience he had with the security operatives fell short of his expectation given the high profile issues involved, stressing that he had expected some sorts of sophisticated interrogation meant to determine whether or not he had any link with any bomb blast suspects.

He recounted how he had to sit for long hours while in custody closely watched by someone he described as a hefty security officer attached to him, and had  wondered why he was being detained unjustly for those long hours.

He said, “every treatment I had amounted to some psychological intimidation. I was kept for very long hours with a man as hefty as Mighty Igor by my side, and he carried weapons and there was nobody to talk to.  At the end, someone would just come to say ‘sorry, the kind of suspects they were expecting had never shown up.’”

He said he was very unhappy about the whole experience,  and he had therefore proceeded to the court to challenge his arrest if only to prove that he had nothing to do with the bomb blasts, and that he and his principal, General Babangida, had nothing to do with the bomb blasts and would never have anything to do with anyone planning evil against the government and the country.

He said although his arrest affected his duties as IBB Campaign Director-General, his spirits were not broken, having picked himself together to face the challenges of making the former military leader scale the hurdles of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries.

On the  chances of Babangida in the 2011 presidential contest, Dokpesi said he was convinced  that the former military president would make a headway, given the mammoth crowd he said had been trailing his campaign team in each of the states they had visited so far.

He allayed fears over possible apathy to Babangida in the South-South and South-West zones, as he described negative reports on the issue as the handiwork of his enemies, whom he said were being intimidated by the larger than life image of Babangida in political circles in Nigeria.

He said Babangida had many supporters in the South-West not known to be noise makers, as, according to him, the supporters were more prepared to project him in the zone as the presidential contest begins to gather momentum.

Dokpesi opened up on the cancellation of the presidential election of June 12, 1993 won by the late Chief Moshood  Abiola, explaining that apart from accepting responsibility several times on the annulment, Babangida had openly made atonement for the omission by supporting the idea of power shift to the South-West in 1999.

He recalled the role played by Babangida  in ensuring the victory of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to emerge as Nigeria’s president in 1999, stressing that the support Babangida and others gave Obasanjo was the reason he defeated Chief Olu Falae in the presidential contest to become  president.

Dokpesi said Babangida had no other agenda for now other than to serve the country as Nigeria’s president, counting on the experience he had acquired in governance over the years and the zeal in him to do things differently if elected as the next president of Nigeria.

The IBB Campaign co-ordinator also harped on the preparedness of Babangida to fight corruption, as, according to him, he had made a strong commitment to do so during his formal declaration in Abuja, and hence would ensure that he strengthened the anti-corruption agencies if voted into power.

On the entourage of Dokpesi were Dr Kunle Olajide, a member of the IBB Campaign team; Dr Supo Ali Balogun; Mr Ide Eguabor; Honourable Soji Adagunodo, coordinator, IBB Campaign Organisation, Osun State; Chief Segun Adekola, coordinator, Ekiti State; Ms Ronnie Dikko and Taiwo Akeju, coordinator South-West  Zone.

Politics › Police Want Civil Defence Corps Scrapped by MiKenny(op): 8:08am On Oct 26, 2010
THE acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, has tabled a demand before the presidency for the scrapping of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on the ground that its functions were overlapping with that of the police.

The police boss was at the presidential villa, on Monday, for a meeting of the Police Reform Committee with Vice-President Namadi Sambo, where a presidency source revealed that he was worried about the existence of the corps whose personnel had inched into the police force’s statutory responsibilities.

The acting IGP was said to have complained that members of the corps had been allowed to bear arms when they were not sufficiently trained for it, stressing the need for something to be done before an ugly situation developed.

A statement later issued on the meeting from the Office of the Vice-President noted that Ringim lamented that some parts of the 2007 Act setting up the NSCDC violated the provisions of Section 214 (1) of the 1999 Constitution which established the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement said the acting IGP had vowed to press ahead with the efforts to reform the force and advocated the streamlining of the functions of the police and the corps “to ensure clarity of roles and avoidance of conflicts between the two security organisations.”

The statement revealed that Sambo had now set up an independent committee, headed by the National Security Adviser (NSA), General Owoeye Azazi, “to investigate the claims of overlapping functions by the Nigeria Police Force.”
