Nairaland GeneralCan Men Be Feminists? by mikeycharles(op): 7:04pm On Jan 03, 2019
I previously wrote about this on Medium with the exact same title but I still want to revisit the same topic here on this platform.
Who is a feminist? Well Chimamanda Adichie gave us a brief and concise definition in one of her TED's talk titled "Why We Should All Be Feminists" which Beyoncé later used for her single titled "Flawless", she aptly defined it as "A person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes". There is an important word here which is to be noted; "person", there was no gender associated to the word, it simply stated a person implying that it could ether be male or female. But why is it common for most men to have an apathy for feminism and it's activities?

There are many reasons why this is so but I have come to some conclusions;
Society, the system is built in such a way whereby the woman is seen as a helper or a home builder and most housekeeping duties are relegated to her, she is to cook, clean and take care of the home. For example in Nigeria, the female child is taught to sweep while the boys dare not touch the broom. I remember in secondary school then, the girls would be assigned to sweep the classrooms and school compound while the boys either go out to play or wait outside for the classrooms to be swept.
The men are held to a different standard than their female counterpart, they are groomed to be engineers, medicals doctors etc to be able to fend and provide for their families. They are to make sure there is food on the table, shelter and clothes for their families.
Simple is it not? Responsibilities have been "equally" shared amongst them but why has there been an uproar to change what the system has built, why are the tables now been turned. Some women have noticed that there has been some impartiality or preference when it comes to job types and the roles they have been assigned to carryout, there are even cases where male workers are paid higher than female workers. So this has resulted to the advocacy for equal rights for both men and women but why are there complications concerning this issue.
I once heard a man saying and I quote "What is a woman doing talking about football" he made this utterance during a match analysis ignoring the fact that there are women who participate in sports just like men and love the game than some men but that's a whole different demographic.

Most ladies want a man to ask them out on a date, pay for the meals, sweep them off their feet and take them back home like some Disney movie but later on the man might ask the lady to fix him a late night meal and she will quickly decline citing that they are both human beings and should know how to cook since most chefs are males themselves. This irks out the man and to maintain peace he stays mute, the next day he tells her to wash his fabrics, to which she yells and proudly (ignorantly) declares herself as a feminist.
The issue here is a lady can't claim to be a feminist and then try to conform to societal standards of what is expected of a man, this will result in a conflict since the man has also been conditioned to conform to societal standards of what is expected of a woman as a wife or partner.
I know in Africa we are still growing but the issue of gender roles applies in almost every society and culture, some persons are trying to act "woke" to feed their own ego and selfish interests but cry foul when the same is applied to them. You can't enslave anybody, you both agreed to date each other with mutual respect for one another, you cannot try to "devalue" the male gender and in turn uplift yourself, that is just one sided and cannot be considered feminism since there is no equality.
I know there is a lot of orientation needed but please no do pass yourself lol.

Phones5 Reasons Why You Should Buy Xiaomi Phones by mikeycharles(op): 2:13pm On Dec 27, 2018
Xiaomi has a lot of fantastic phones and they offer great value. There is a reason why reputable sites like Android authority made it one of their top picks.

1. Affordability: this is one of the company's mission; to provide affordable devices while maintaining optimal quality ( aggressive pricing).

2. Design
Although many have made several comparisons between the iPhone and Xiaomi, the company has managed to pave it's own way with the recent release of the Redmi Note 5 pro which many reviewers have praised for it's stunning design and overall durability.

3. Customization Xiaomi is known to offer one of the best UI in the world with their very own MIUI skin which transforms stock android into something totally different.

4. Use of quality chips
Most Xiaomi devices make use of Snapdragon processors which are fine tuned to suit the phones software and offer better performance.

5. Support
Xiaomi offers the best support and customer services, they provide constant updates/upgrades to their devices and there is a huge online community to solve your problems.

These are just some of the reasons why you need to obtain a xiaomi device, others include remote control via IR blaster, virtual reality support, massive battery, high quality cameras etc

PhonesStop Using MTN! by mikeycharles(op):
Mtn which is actually a south African based company running it's business in Nigeria, MTN Nigeria is part of the MTN group and one of Africa's leading telecommunications company. On may 16, 2001 after paying the sum of $285 million for one of four GSM licences. It's not hidden knowledge that when the telecommunications giant launched in Nigeria it sold it's SIM cards for as much as #35,000 naira incorporated with one of the most expensive billings.

https://i0.wp.com/media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/06/mtn-Nigeria.jpg

Although it didn't take long before Globacom launched it's operations and took the nation by surprise. The launching of a new network coupled with the present competition led to the revolution of telecommunications in Nigeria. Globacom took the world by storm, their plans were not just affordable to the average Nigerian but also reasonable and not to mention the easy availability of their SIM cards.

We recently the experienced the issue of xenophobic attacks in the country where MTN originated from, although MTN cannot be blamed for the mindless killings and hate occurring in their country. But they made little or no effort to stop or warn against these attacks.

The SIM registration saga

It is to be noted that NCC made it a policy that all sim cards were to be duly registered to help curb the insurgency Nigeria is currently experiencing. NCC made it public that previous SIM cards owners should be re-registered but MTN took the easy route. They paid zero attention to the policies issued by the commission and allowed for the sales of pre-registered SIMs to customers. When this atrocity was discovered the network was fined which led to the current MTN-CBN saga.

I personally have never seen the value in any MTN plans especially their data offerings not to mention their bogus offerings which usually end up as daylight robbery.

I could remember saying Globacom was done for good but look at them today, they have slowly become the grand masters of data..they offer the most flexible plans to Nigerians from their "Yakata" tariff plan to dashing out free data. Nigerians need to wake up and support their own because "what's not yours will never be yours".

PhonesShould You Buy Xiaomi Phones...? by mikeycharles(op):
Why you should not buy Xiaomi phones.

There are so many threads dedicated to Xiaomi, Umidigi, Leagoo.. devices but are these phones worth the hype? If you could remember clearly from the Leagoo saga; an inferior chinese brand that was been sold for below $80 with a 4000 mah battery, a steal right? But this particular brand managed to destroy any confidence any consumer/buyer might have had about chinese products in general. There was the M8 and its successor the m8 pro which were both disasters sold at a "low-price", from screen problems to touchpad problems.

https://d2pa5gi5n2e1an.cloudfront.net/global/images/product/mobilephones/Xiaomi_Redmi_5_Plus/Xiaomi_Redmi_5_Plus_L_1.jpg

Now back to Xiaomi, this brand which has massive support here on nairaland and agents whose sole duty is to defend the brand has done the exact same thing Tecno phones and other rubbish that is been sold in the country, they mass produce so many series of devices with similar specifications and hardware but just change the name or the suffix.

Sold Mainly In China
This is one of the major setbacks the brand has, not to mention you could be easily duped online by a group scammers and frauds. Their main outlet is the famous E-commerce site; Aliexpress, your order is shipped from overseas to you, quite simple is it not? But the major drawbacks here is the time period, you have to wait for so long and sometimes you might even receive a defective item.

The phone itself; is it really worth it?
Well, the answer lies within you after reading this. Yes they produce fabulous products with wonderful specifications on paper!
Their cameras are not quite what it seems, so many users have complained about the bad quality of images taken with their cameras.
Although their processors are pretty good, they make use of the American chip producer; Qualcomm but they either make use old chips or obsolete processors. Some of their recent phones released this year come packed with snapdragon 625 or 660 or some later chipsets, compared to some brands like the LG V20 which was released in 2016 come with the snapdragon 820.

Price
The Xiaomi brand which is actually a clone of the Iphone is a cheaper product but at what cost. Their prices ranges from a $100-$500 which is a lot cheaper than most brands but lack "premium" features; mostly their cameras and overall quality build. Some of their antutu banchmark scores are not worth mentioning (except the pocophone) but they do offer the best in software optimization and support for their users. Plus they offer at least 2 years worth of android version upgrades and relevant security patches.

No customer service/ repair centre in the country, this may prove to be an issue especially when there is faulty hardware components but I use my phones frugally and I've never taken my phones to a repair shop or pray for something like that. So is it really an issue?

https://d2giyh01gjb6fi.cloudfront.net/default/0002/15/thumb_114122_default_big.jpeg

Finally, most chinese brands are great but please go behind what is written in paper, I have seen phones claiming to have a mega pixel of 20 and blah blah but in reality they are not up to 5 mega pixels. And a friendly reminder be weary of Mediatek chipsets; they are mostly used on "budget" phones which is code for inferior and substandard.

Make a wise choice today, go for Samsung, IPhone (if you can afford it), One plus, Lg, Huawei, ZTE...

PhonesAirtel "4g" Speed Test by mikeycharles(op):
Harrlex Concept

It’s no news that Airtel is testing their 4g network speeds (despite the fact that some countries are already testing 5g), They are also giving out four gigabytes worth of data to their customers as bonus free data to test their 4g LTE speed.

I’m a proud Airtel user and I must say despite the free offer, I don’t see myself subscribing to any Airtel 4g plans due to the poor network speed that is being offered.

https://www.harrlexconcept.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Screenshot_2018-12-23-3GIsGreat4GIsBetter-hashtag-on-Twitter-300x216.png

My intent of writing this piece is not to bash the telecommunication giant but for them to up their game, the 4g LTE is speed is just an overrated 3g band speed.

Airtel even took their campaign to twitter to promote the 4g network with the hash tag #3GIsGreat4GIsBetter.

I can’t really complain about the free data I was offered but I don’t buy into the whole “4g service” and here are my reasons; I have done some speed tests and check out the screenshots

https://www.harrlexconcept.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Screenshot_2018-12-23-Internet-Speed-Test-300x167.png

I did several speed tests but they all managed to fall within an average of four megabits per second for the download speed.

https://www.harrlexconcept.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Screenshot_2018-12-23-Internet-Speed-Test1.png?x85983

The upload speed reached a maximum of 930 kilobits per second, I did this test several times but the figures slightly changed but at most times they didn’t go higher than this.

https://www.harrlexconcept.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/InkedScreenshot_2018-12-23-Internet-Speed-Test2_LI-300x194.jpg

We have seen better speed offered by an array of other networks and I’m just gonna call this for what it is; A BIG SHAM, I’m not going to mention or juxtapose between other networks but I’m definitely not impressed at what Airtel is offering as “4g Network”

Mr Charles Oputa, (Charly Boy or Area Fada) controversial Nigerian entertainer and activist will walk his long time consort, Lady Diane down the aisle in Abuja for formal exchange of marital vows.

The wedding will take place at the chapel of the Sisters of Jesus the Redeemer, Catholic Church , in Gwarimpa Estate, where he resides.

The ceremony which holds today, Saturday December 15, will be officiated by the outspoken Catholic clergy, Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah.

The wedding will have in attendance family members and close associates of the couple.

According to him, he hopes to convince his wife to ride with him in a tricycle to and from the church to underscore the low-key nature of the ceremony.

Mr Oputa was first married to Stella at a Catholic Church in Onitsha in 1974. The relationship produced one child.

According to Oputa, “We have been following through with the process of annulment for sometime. My former wife who has since remarried cooperated very well.

“She had no objection. The reason I put forward for the annulment was that I was underage. My mother actually got the wife for me at the age of 19 because I a little rascally with women.

“Getting me married at that age was supposed to curb my sexual excesses. “

Incidentally, Mr Oputa’s 101 year-old mother is once again the reason he is contracting a formal marriage to Lady Diane, who has three children for him.

He explained, “This is not that kind of marriage with fanfare. I am doing it to please my aged mother. She has been pleading that we do the right thing.

“This is a woman I have been living with for 40 years. We know each other well. This is about obedience to certain demands of the society.

“People wonder how I am able to live with one woman all these years. It is not that we do not have misunderstanding.

“Marriage is successful when you are able to manage your incompatibility. I saw my parents quarrel, reconcile, kiss and hold hands again. These are the values that have guided me my relationship. “

Charly Boy who is 62 years has nine children from different women insists that “Lady Diane is now the mother of all my children. We have 16 grandchildren.”

PhonesVine Founder Is Dead by mikeycharles(op):
Harrlex Concept

Colin Kroll, the 35-year-old co-founder and CEO of the HQ Trivia app, has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his apartment.

A spokesman for the NYPD told us that a female called 911 for a wellness check on Kroll’s apartment and he was found dead inside at 08:00 hours today.

The police department said the investigation is ongoing but added that the cause of death is “allegedly a drug overdose”.

“We’re still waiting on the ME’s report to confirm that,” he added.

The story was reported earlier by TMZ — which cites a police source saying cocaine and heroin were believed to be involved.

In a brief statement, HQ said: “We learned today of the passing of our friend and founder, Colin Kroll, and it’s with deep sadness that we say goodbye. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Kroll was only named CEO of the HQ Trivia mobile game show app three months ago, replacing fellow co-founder Rus Yusupov who moved over to serve as chief creative officer.

Prior to taking the CEO role Kroll served as HQ’s CTO. He co-founded the startup in 2015, a few months after moving on from Vine — the Twitter-owned short video format startup which got closed down in 2017.

It’s not clear who will take over the CEO role for HQ Trivia at this stage but Yusupov looks a likely candidate, at least in the interim.

In recent months the startup has been beta testing a follow up mobile game show, called HQ Words. Its original trivia format show airs twice per day and awards winners as much as $100,000 for successfully answering 12 questions.

The app debuted last August and was a viral success. But the question hanging over HQ Trivia and its co-founders has increasingly been how to sustain an early winning streak, once the novelty of the original show ran its course.

As we reported previously, HQ Trivia’s ranking in the app store has been steadily decreasing in recent months.

Kroll started his career as a software engineer at Right Media, which went on to be acquired by Yahoo in 2006. From then until 2011, he led the engineering team in Yahoo’s search and advertising tech group before joining luxury travel site Jetsetter as VP of Product — where he went on to be promoted to CTO.

In 2012 he left to start Vine with co-founders Dominik Hofmann and Yusopov.

PhonesA 3D Printer Can Hack Your Phone by mikeycharles(op): 10:05pm On Dec 16, 2018
HarrlexConcept

Crazy right? But it's true, there’s a lot you can make with a 3D printer: from prosthetics, corneas, and firearms — even an Olympic-standard luge.
https://3dprinting.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/17.jpg

You can even 3D print a life-size replica of a human head — and not just for Hollywood. Forbes reporter Thomas Brewster commissioned a 3D printed model of his own head to test the face unlocking systems on a range of phones — four Android models and an iPhone X.

Bad news if you’re an Android user: only the iPhone X defended against the attack.

Gone, it seems, are the days of the trusty passcode, which many still find cumbersome, fiddly, and inconvenient — especially when you unlock your phone dozens of times a day. Phone makers are taking to the more convenient unlock methods. Even if Google’s latest Pixel 3 shunned facial recognition, many Android models — including popular Samsung devices — are relying more on your facial biometrics. In its latest models, Apple effectively killed its fingerprint-reading Touch ID in favor of its newer Face ID.

But that poses a problem for your data if a mere 3D-printed model can trick your phone into giving up your secrets. That makes life much easier for hackers, who have no rulebook to go from. But what about the police or the feds, who do?

It’s no secret that biometrics — your fingerprints and your face — aren’t protected under the Fifth Amendment. That means police can’t compel you to give up your passcode, but they can forcibly depress your fingerprint to unlock your phone, or hold it to your face while you’re looking at it. And the police know it — it happens more often than you might realize.

But there’s also little in the way of stopping police from 3D printing or replicating a set of biometrics to break into a phone.

“Legally, it’s no different from using fingerprints to unlock a device,” said Orin Kerr, professor at USC Gould School of Law, in an email. “The government needs to get the biometric unlocking information somehow,” by either the finger pattern shape or the head shape, he said.

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e7/34/64/e734647d92575b7dccdb81d800cbd5c8--epic-photos-funny-photos.jpg

Although a warrant “wouldn’t necessarily be a requirement” to get the biometric data, one would be needed to use the data to unlock a device, he said.

Jake Laperruque, senior counsel at the Project On Government Oversight, said it was doable but isn’t the most practical or cost-effective way for cops to get access to phone data.

“A situation where you couldn’t get the actual person but could use a 3D print model may exist,” he said. “I think the big threat is that a system where anyone — cops or criminals — can get into your phone by holding your face up to it is a system with serious security limits.”

The FBI alone has thousands of devices in its custody — even after admitting the number of encrypted devices is far lower than first reported. With the ubiquitous nature of surveillance, now even more powerful with high-resolution cameras and facial recognition software, it’s easier than ever for police to obtain our biometric data as we go about our everyday lives.

Those cheering on the “death of the password” might want to think again. They’re still the only thing that’s keeping your data safe from the law.

Car TalkRe: California Says All City Buses Have To Be Emission Free By 2040 by mikeycharles(op): 9:45pm On Dec 16, 2018
.

Car TalkCalifornia Says All City Buses Have To Be Emission Free By 2040 by mikeycharles(op):
On the heels of a dire government report published last month about climate change and its devastating impacts, many cities and states are scrambling to find ways to curb the greenhouse gas emissions that threaten their air quality, not to mention their economies.

As is often the case, California is leading the charge, yesterday becoming the first state to mandate that mass transit agencies purchase fully electric buses only beginning in 2029, and that public transit routes be populated by electric buses alone by 2040.

The new rule is expected to require the production and purchase of more than 14,000 new zero-emission buses.

Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air and Resource Board (CARB) that voted unanimously to make California the first state with such a commitment, told the outlet Trucks.com earlier this month that California has “to push standards that are more progressive” than the federal government because of the state’s chronic air pollution, which is linked to asthma and heart disease, among other things.

The move is reportedly the result of several years of CARB’s work with industry and public-health groups, and it flies in the face of moves by the Trump administration to push for lower fuel efficiency standards and to promote the use of fossil fuels.

Indeed, the Trump administration has questioned from the outset how much the U.S. is responsible for cutting back emissions, and the newest government report seemingly didn’t alter anything for the President. Asked last month about the government’s findings that, unchecked, global warming will have catastrophic implications for the U.S. economy, he said, “I don’t believe it.” He added: “People like myself, we have very high levels of intelligence but we’re not necessarily such believers.”

Instead of wait on the administration to change its mind, California’s new Innovative Clean Transit rule will force California’s public bus lines — many of which currently run on natural gas or diesel fuel — to shift to either electric power or hydrogen fuel cells.

The move could be a boon for electric bus companies like Proterra, a 14-year-old, Burlingame, Ca., company that has raised roughly half a billion dollars from investors to build its zero-emission, battery-electric buses. It could also potentially help the publicly traded Chinese automaker giant BYD, which, as TC has reported, has been on a partnership spree with cities across China to electrify their public transportation systems and is now extending its footprint across the globe.

The new ruling is not the only line of attack that California is adopting. As The Hill notes, earlier this year, California also voted to become the first state to mandate new homes be retrofitted with solar panels. In September, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that will require the state to transition to a 100 percent renewable energy electric grid by 2045.

CARB has also worked to advise the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which last month announced what it called its Cleaner Trucks Initiative. EPA officials say that via the initiative, the agency plans to revise truck pollution standards in a way that lowers their nitrogen oxide emissions while also doing away with requirements that the industry has complained are financially onerous.

As reported by the L.A. Times, despite the announcement, no one yet knows if the EPA is planning more stringent emissions limits or anything as strict as the 90 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide pollution that CARB has said is needed to clean smog to health standards.
