The embattled former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, who is currently serving a jail term in a UK prison, is neither released nor rearrested, a statement by the former governor’s media aide, Tony Eluemunor, said. There were reports Wednesday that Mr. Ibori was released from prison and rearrested immediately. The statement said, “The Chief James Onanefe Ibori Media Office hereby informs Ibori’s teaming supporters that the news about the release of their champion and political leader from prison is not true. “This news had set off a frenzy of activities in the entire South-South geo-political zone, as many people took off from their respective towns and villages to storm Ibori’s home town of Oghara. “Many kept vigil at his gate; but the vigil was in vain as Ibori has not finished serving his term. “Perhaps as the magnitude of the lie The News on-line publication told to itself and the nation (in a story it had termed an exclusive) dawned on it, its sister publication, PM News kicked in with another lie; that Ibori had been re-arrested. “This caused a sleepless night to another set of Ibori’s supporters as they stayed up all night working the phone to find out the true situation. “The truth is that the exclusive stories published by The News and PM news were exclusive lies. Over 24 hours after the publications, no British authority has confirmed either the news of the release or of the purported re-arrest. “Many people have asked me how such a malicious story could have been cocked up. My only reply is that Ibori’s political and legal persecutors tried to counter the favourable wind that arose from Ibori’s corner when the case turned against the London Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecutors by late January 2016, when even they agreed that they were corrupt in the way they investigated Ibori and his associates. “That forced them to withdraw the obstructing the cause of justice charges they had brought against one of Ibori’s lawyers, Mr. Bradesh Gohil. “Most importantly, the judge that day ruled that all the documents that had been withheld from Ibori and all his associates should be turned over to them and that they were free to go on appeal to challenge even their earlier convictions. “It was this ray of hope that even Ibori’s conviction may be struck down that the media manipulators attempted to extinguish in the hearts and minds of Ibori’s supporters when they concocted their lies and passed same off as news. ”To prove that the case has turned and the hunters may be feeling the heat, respected British news media such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), The Times of London and the Guardian of London, last week announced that calls have arisen that Ibori’s and his associates’ accusations of corruption against the prosecution be investigated. “The New Indian Express of Monday 25 January 2016 reported that “In representations to the judge, Stephen Kamlish, Gohil’s defence team accused the Crown Prosecution Service of “positively misleading the court and the parties as part of their deliberate cover-up of discloseable material”. “In response, the Judge Tester said, “The crown has offered no evidence for one or both of the following reasons. One, that the allegations of corruption made by Mr Gohil are true, and not false. The second is that the crown has suppressed material both in this court and in other proceedings, including the trial of Ibori. “The crown offering no evidence can only mean the crown is not prepared themselves to explain their decision, either for the abuse of the court in bad faith or for the police corruption. In those circumstance, it is our duty to our client to raise these matters and this brings into question the safety of these convictions. “The Indian Express continued: “A Met police intelligence report seen by this paper (The Indian Express) suggests an RISC employee telephoned a police officer working on the Ibori investigation in 2007 and allegedly told him his inquiries were “on the right track”. Separate documents shown to Gohil’s defence team are said to reveal the existence of 19 cash deposits into the same officer’s bank account. The CPS had allegedly denied the existence of the documents. “It is an incontrovertible fact that the confiscation hearing has not started at all, and remains months away into the future. “Even today, that remains the case as nothing has changed. The confiscation hearing has not started and nobody, whether Ibori or another person, has been arrested as there is really no need to arrest anyone because of a confiscation hearing”. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/198002-james-ibori-neither-released-uk-prison-re-arrested-aide.html |

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will not relent in his war against corruption until the scourge is destroyed in the country. He also called on Nigerians to join the battle against corruption in the country. “This is not Buhari’s war; this is not the All Progressives Congress’ war. This is a war for all Nigerians and we must all join hands in waging the war,’’ Mohammed said while delivering a lecture on Friday at the Faculty of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He claimed that once the people were determined to fight corruption, they were assured of victory. The minister said, ‘’No power has ever been great enough to defeat a people who are determined to win. Let us all form what I call citizens’ coalition against corruption by speaking up against the crime, refusing to glorify or support looters, irrespective of how much dirty cash they dangle before us, and refusing to be divided along religious or ethnic lines.” While listing the effects of corruption in the nation, the minister said Nigeria lost $400bn in the oil sector alone, adding that so much money was stolen by corrupt leaders from the health, education, security and other sectors. According to him, atrocities committed by the Boko Haram insurgents continued for many years because the funds allocated to buy weapons for the military were shared by some corrupt persons. Apart from massive loss of lives and property, Mohammed stated that corruption in public office had caused endemic poverty, poor infrastructure and lack of qualitative health care, among other effects. The minister, however, claimed that corruption had started fighting back, saying some of the corrupt persons had started hiring hack writers, pseudo analysts to attack the President’s war against corruption in the media. He said, “On the part of government, let me reiterate what I said earlier that there is no stopping this fight. Those who doubt the resolve of this administration to successfully wage this battle will learn a tough lesson, a lesson of their lives. “Failure is not an option in this fight. In the days ahead, we plan a road show of sorts on corruption sensitisation efforts.” Mohammed decried the use of ethno-religious sentiment to weaken the anti-corruption war, but asked Nigerians to ignore the trick “because poverty and other effects of corruption did not discriminate between people according to ethnicity or religious beliefs.” http://www.punchng.com/criticism-wont-stop-buharis-anti-corruption-war-mohammed/ |

By Emman Ovuakporie and Johnbosco Agbakwuru ABUJA-THE House of Representatives on Wednesday mandated its committee on Ethics and Privileges to investigate an alleged sharing of N50 million and 150 motorcycles by the Leadership of the House to its members. This development was sequel to a point of privilege raised by the Deputy Minority Whip, Rep. Yakubu Barde, PDP, Kaduna. Barde had alleged on the floor of the House that Rep. Mohammad Abubakar representing Igabi federal constituency of Kaduna state had gone on air in a local radio station (Liberty Radio) to say that the said money and motorcycles were given. According to him, he has been under pressure by his constituents who have been demanding for their share of the money adding that the issue should be investigated because he did not collect such money or motorcycles. “This is an allegation, considering the present economic situation of Nigeria as law makers we have to be very careful to make sure our image is not tarnished “Nigerians need to know what really happened, “Barde told the House. The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara who presided yesterday said he was not opening the matter for debate and in his ruling referred the matter to the committee on ethics and privileges which is to report back to the House in 4 weeks. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/reps-set-to-investigate-n50m-150-motorcycles-allegedly-shared-among-members/ |
Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has denied owning any property in Dubai, United Arab Emirate or any other foreign country. Akpabio in a statement on Friday by his his media assistant, Anietie Ekong, challenged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to seize any money found in a foreign bank account bearing his name. The Senate Minority Leader was denying reports that accused him of makiing a secret attempt to withdraw $7.2 billion from banks in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, through channels in the Central Bank of Nigeria. It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had recently signed agreements with the United Arab Emirate on the repatriation of Nigeria’s stolen funds deposited in that country. This move is believed to have unsettled corrupt, former and serving Nigerians officials, who have unexplained wealth and property there. Stating that the media report against him was sponsored by his political traducers, Akpabio said the government should investigate the source of such money and also prosecute its owner. According to him, “We challenge these purveyors of falsehood to publish the full details of the purported $7.2 billion account and we urge the Federal Government of Nigeria to seize such sum and prosecute the owner if it does exist. People should learn to accept the outcome of elections and stop this kind of dangerous propaganda in the name of politics,” said Akpabio. |
