2015 General election: a reflection of the people's will or an outcome of political vendetta? Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. Which is characterized by the voting process. Where people are allowed to choose their leaders. Every free and fair election is a reflection of the will of the people. The choice might not seem right to some certain people, but who are we to decide who/what is right for another? Choose well. Your choice is brief, and yet endless. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Nigerians made a choice in the 2015 general election, a choice that history will never forget. Good day honourable chairman, infallible panel of judges, ubiquitous moderators, gumptious cordinators, erudite Co-debaters and my ever well-grounded and genial audience. I'm Miracy a representative of the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University. I'm here to support the topic which states that "2015 General election is a reflection of the people's will and not an outcome of political vendetta " An election according to the Hutchinson’s Encyclopedia, is the process of appointing or selecting persons to public offices or a political party to govern, by voting. It is indeed a vital political right of expression of choice. Election is at individual level, an inalienable opportunity and political expression of citizenship and at a collective level, an expression of sovereignty by which people determine their preferred policies according to the manifesto of competing persons or parties. Thus, the key element in election is “CHOICE” it is ultimately organized to enable the people of a determinate polis express their choice by voting for the candidate of their choice. Elections are the central tool for measuring democracy, and the extent to which the electoral process produces the exact will of the people, is what indicates the thoroughness of democracy in a society. The concept of democratic National elections is one of the most important developments in human society. There is no doubt that the recent 2015 general elections was an expression of true democracy where Nigerians trooped out in millions to exercise their franchise . The Nigerian general election of 2015 was the 5th quadrennial election to be held since the end of military rule in 1999. Voters elected the President and members to the House of Representatives and the Senate. The most revered incumbency power was demystified as the collective will of the people prevailed over it. The 2015 general elections offer INEC an ample chance to bring to bear its determination to conduct an acceptable general election, demonstrating its knowledge and competence which is a true reflection of the choices of the majority of the electorate According to the available records it indicates that the polls elicited large voter turnouts across the country and the elections were largely peaceful and better organized than previous ones. Nigeria has made Africa proud as it has passed its biggest democratic test having the incumbent president voted out of power .Nigeria is happy to show the rest of Africa, for once, who the true “Giant of Africa” is. Acknowledging the success of the election, election observation missions of the Commonwealth, the AU and ECOWAS unanimously agreed that the elections were peaceful, transparent and credible. The election observers particularly applauded Nigerian voters for their maturity, orderliness and commitment towards the success of the polls. The former Ghanaian President and Head of ECOWAS Election Observer Mission, John Kufuor, said that Nigeria’s feat with regard to the elections was a pride to Africa. “The Nigerian elections are a pride, not only to Nigerians, but also to West Africa and the whole of the African continent; we are all proud of the success of the Nigerian elections"he said. The elections were first scheduled to be held on 14 February 2015. However, the electoral commission postponed it by six weeks to 28 March, mainly due to the poor distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, and also to curb ongoing Boko Haram insurgency in certain north-eastern states in the country. The election was extended to 29 March due to delays and technical problems with the biometric card readers . It was the most expensive election ever to be held on the African continent. The INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who was the Chief Returning Officer for the presidential election, declared retired Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner after polling 15,424,921 votes defeating all other candidates. In the election, President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP garnered 12,853,162 votes to place second. Also speaking, former Ghanaian President, Jerry Rawlings said in his congratulatory message to Buhari, “Nigerians have taken the lead in the rejection of corruption. The election result is a manifestation of the people’s resolve to confront corruption, dishonesty and exploitation. The outcome of the 2015 general elections showed Nigeria’s capacity for self-renewal and the people’s desire to stay united in the pursuit of justice in a prosperous nation. The election defied all doomsday predictions as a result of the deeply rooted love above the pursuit of power in Nigerians' character . Nigerians have indicated their desire to stand together, to strengthen the democratic system. Furthermore, former Ghanaian and Head, ECOWAS Election Observer Mission, John Kufuor, said that Nigeria’s feat with regard to the elections was a pride to Africa. “The Nigerian elections are a pride, not only to Nigerians, but also to West Africa and the whole of the African continent; we are all proud of the success of the Nigerian elections,’’ he said.. Indeed, the nation is rising and spirits are high. Now, the politicians – both winners and losers – have the clear and direct obligation to support the national restoration that has begun to edify and enhance the collective well being of a one, united and indivisible Nigeria. Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not the President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country. - Franklin D. Oooops.... Apologies to the cordinators, my teammate, Co-debaters, judges and viewers. I couldn't make it cos i've been super busy plus there's a power cut here Sincerely, i won't be able to make it today, I'm not prepared at all and there's no way i can get it done today .... If only it can be postponed till tomorrow. Dunno if my request would be considered.. .. if not, too bad then Thanks in anticipation. |
Awwww... I'm so exhausted!!.. . It was very tasking.. . weldone Co-debaters-danjuma827 and Barackodam. You guys are great!! Kudos to the judges and cordinators... looking forward to the next stage. I plead on behalf of my partner... He couldn't make it due to some unforeseen circumstances.... ##teamEverConsciousIfe!! *yawns*.. . Off to bed..... |
Danjuma827:probably but they still paid the money. .. They didn't realize it was a blessing in disguise. Those that opted out were those that had other options. |
crowther15:You can't compare our naira with dollar... Naira has no value at all compared to dollar |
Hidentity:I actually meant public universities sir.. . |
Danjuma827:Like i said earlier... Can you please give me the list of federal universities that pay tuition fee?? What kinda project can they embark upon with such meager amount?? The cost of things are soo high.... . what kinda hostel will they built with that amount.. . Don't forget that there are other projects to embark upon. |
Funom001:Oau students started paying that high after the increase last year. .. Our fees were ridiculously cheap. I put it to you that since the increase of the school fees, more projects have been embarked upon, even our newly admitted freshers are being given the best orientation program ever ![]() |
barackodam:Of course there are lotta half baked graduates out there... many are studying the courses they are not meant to study??.. .. whose fault .. .. Is the increase of tuition fees in universities to be blamed ? ?? 2)I beg to differ... If we all that is school have that kinda orientation, im sure we all will go into vocational works.. ... Many of us go to school in order to be educated and well oriented not for succeeding sake 3)why?? Because of low funding which is as a result of low generation of income. .. If we don't pay tuition fees, how can we generate enough income to fund our universities?? |
@barackodam You're comparing the past graduates who graduated a long time ago with the present ... Don't you think comparing our past with the present is a fallacy?? Do you know the situation of our present economy?? Our naira is depreciation daily. You asking the government to keep funding every aspect of the economy is more like you saying that the government should start taking the responsibility of each individual in the country to have a better life. How feasible is that?? |
Funom001:Of course, i have that's why I'm telling you probably you give me the list of federal universities that pay tuition fee |
barackodam:Yes that's very good of them but i still stand to say all those donations only serve as suppliments. . . Our hostels are nothing to write home about... laboratory are not well-equipped, health care centers too shouldn't be left out, among other things. ... Who should cater for all that?? |
Danjuma827: How much do they pay as acceptance fee?? Oau students pay the sum of just #20000for acceptance fee and 2090 for accommodation fee... what a ridiculous price right?? Still we're all clamoring for the best education, best hotels and good electricity... . How feasible can that be since our government doesn't even have enough to cater for the education sector?? May i remind you that federal universities don't even pay tuition fee.... |
barackodam:Government intervention isn't enough it can only serve as an added advantage. |
@barackodam if Nigerian students are brilliant naturally... why do our universities keep churning out half baked graduates that cant even defend their certificate?? ? Why do we even bother going to school?? Why can't our students measure up to the standard of other students in other developed countries?? |
@Danjuma827 What do you say to a school like oau that increased the students' fee for better development of the school, tho the students protested against it but their efforts were futile due to the fact that over 90% of it's students paid the money... |
@barackodam Taking a look at the current economic situation of the country in which we're in debt and our government claims that we don't have enough to cater for the education sector... What solution can you recommend if not increase in tuition fees |
Tuition fees are fees charged for instruction and teaching during higher education. Tuition payments are charged by educational institutions in some countries to assist with funding of staffs and faculties , course offerings, lab equipment, computer systems, libraries, facility upkeep and to provide a comfortable student learning experience. Good day honourable chairman, efficacious coordinators, panel of incorruptible adjudicators, members of the opposing team and my ever-genial audience. I'm Miracy, a representative of the ever conscious Obafemi Awolowo University. I'm of the affirmative side of the topic which states that, "Increase of tuition fees in Nigerian Universities is necessary for a better educational standard" Universities are considered in many countries as critical institutions for development where a wide scope of subjects are taught to a high level thereby producing a corps of educated elites to serve the community and the entire nation. Education in Nigeria is currently in crisis because of the down-ward trend in the quality of Nigeria’s higher education system and the often complains of under-funding which have impinged on provision of human and physical resources. Of the many drawbacks of university education in Nigeria today, perhaps none is more critical than poor funding. Indeed, it is quite reasonable to argue that poor funding is largely responsible for the other drawbacks, including poor and understaffing, decrepit infrastructure, inadequate facilities and bout of churning out half baked graduates yearly. Even though all public universities in Nigeria are funded by either the state or federal government, they still have need to raise more money to maintain the school. The reason is because the money allocated to them by the government most times is not enough to cater for other responsibilities in the school. Already, the education sector has been feeling the pinch for several decades, but especially in the last few years, despite modest increases in budgetary allocation to education, the long-term neglect as well as the Federal Government’s failure to fulfil its contractual obligations led to the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in 2013. With federal and state governments struggling to pay teachers’ salaries – some of them even owe up to six months in arrears – capital development has had to be put on hold in many universities. During the ASUU strike of 2013, the Ebonyi State Chairman , Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, gave the warning in Abakiliki at a news conference on the ASUU strike. He said , "the fee hike would come when universities attempted to source money for their Earned Academic Allowances as directed by the Federal Government... We demanded for N500 billion but the government has only released N100 billion to university councils for infrastructure development in selected universities and another N30 billion for part-payment of Earned Academic Allowances". The government expects various University councils to source the balance. But the question is; from where will the funds come if not through increase in school fees? It must be noted that the budgetary allocation for education in the 2015 budget being inherited by the incoming government is grossly inadequate, even when the university infrastructure fund of about $1.2 billion is factored in. Also, with massive government debts and dwindling oil revenue, the government may have reached the zenith of its funding capacity for university education. Indeed, in many states, subventions are often given in arrears, leading to a halt in several important university activities. This results universities to embark on fundraising from various sources and increase in school fees becomes inevitable. Furthermore, with the ever increasing number of new students being admitted into the school, thus stretching available facilities beyond their capacity without a corresponding increase in necessary resources. There is always need to raise money to build structures that will accommodate them all, and the only other way to do this is to increase student’s fee. Funding of university education at this time is also due to economic reasons and it is hinged on dwindling oil revenue, due to a dip in oil prices; the concomitant devaluation of the naira; and across-the-board deficiencies in infrastructural facilities in the education, health, and transport sectors. The cost of educating students tend to increase as a result of money losing value over a period of time and this is mostly common during inflation. It might be argued that the increase of tuition might make education very expensive and take university education beyond the reach of the poor. But I'd like to remind you of a popular adage that says,“ If you think education is expensive, try ignorance". The argument can be addressed by reviving avenues for financing students including the revival of the student loans schemes , bursaries and scholarship, education bank, among other initiatives. For instance, University of lagos(unilag) set up businesses that can operate profitably and employ students who are less privileged. Though federal universities in Nigeria do not charge tuition fees, students pay for several other fees which are sometimes considered expensive and have led to protests by students and staff. But the truth still remains that government can not single-handedly fund the university system and pull it out of its current state in spite of its best efforts and intentions. On the interim, an increase in school fees can go a long way in bringing the needed funds to bring our university out of its present precarious situation. While the Universities seek addition funding from endowments and private industry partnerships just like it's done in top institutions like Harvard, Oxford and MIT.
