Being registered to vote affects your credit records in a positive way. You should do that once you arrive the UK. Takes about 3 minutes.

You can also check whether you are on ɓthe voter's register here

I was even thinking that we have outgrown just sharing experiences and should now be turning to trying to influence policy. Encouraging people to vote, run in local and parliamentary elections, join boards and so on

I was amazed at the humongous remittances to Nigeria from us last year. We are clearly a force to be reckoned with .we should pat ourselves on the back and use our strength 💪

Absolutely not. I trust justwise will be along shortly to remove all the nasty comments.

You can call out people ,thats fine. Name calling is not okay .

I did read through the thread in question (rather traumatic read, gentleman splashed his toddlers face all over the internet). It appears Lexus's grouse was that this gentleman had been disruptive in the Living in the UK thread while not yet ,in fact, living in the UK.

We will keep this thread open because as more and more nigerians migrate here, they ll turn to us for advice. We will never become a force to be reckoned with in the UK if we do not stand together and share experiences.

NB: you keep saying the information is "littered" all over the Internet but you are here reading this thread ,using the advice provided here. Shouldn't you go find the "littered " advice ?

wonlasewonimi:
The thread was started with good intentions to help people, maybe it has served its purpose.

Exactly. You dont know what you dont know.
gmacnoms:
So, you mean a Nigerian would come here, have the ability get mortgage, then continue paying rent?
Travel › Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 4:24am On Mar 15, 2024
I think lexus is an asset to this thread. I dont agree with him on everything but he passed along a website specific to renting in Kent when i moved.

He is a veritable mine of information and not stuck up at all .
gmacnoms:

Baba, you no get rating.

Apart from advise (which is even available and open on the net), nothing else you get to offer anybody here.

Everyone who comes here, in due time, would get everything that’s obtainable.

When you say people like this, are you implying that he stated he was an extremist on his visa application and was let ?

Or are you saying no moslems should be let in? What do you mean people like this?

hustla:
Fear mongering to drive home a point won't work with me.

This was my premise -

"Sometimes I wonder how they let in people who are now asking for Sharia in their neighborhoods in while constantly insulting students who bring in money and pay taxes"

I have shown you an example and you have done nothing but deflect, make excuses while bringing up Nigeria with zero relevance to the discourse. All those "phobia" won't make me not express my opinion about something obvious and you have not answered the question.

Why are they letting people like this in while constantly shitting on students who pay billions and want to contribute to their society? Wanting to be politically correct won't make you say the truth as it is

Another example is below -

Sometimes I feel like these politicians are fanning the student rhetoric in order to hide or avoid doing something

I am going to be calling for his head as soon as he gets in.we should always keep politicians on their tippytoes. They work for us. His health plan is caca ( sh*t) . I m just keeping my gunpowder dry.

I also want proportional representation and abolition of the House of Lords.

Lexusgs430:
30p Lee, already packed his bus with reform...... So he is back with ........

For KS sake I truly hope he gets in (not a coalition govt)... Let's see how long before people start calling for his head ........🤔😁

We need a change . Dem de carry us go where we no know.
I disagree that Labour and the tories are the same.
One is right and the other is left. They approach social and economic issues differently. Thats why i am suspicious of that 30 p Lee. Even if i make 20 million pounds , i ll remain a bleeding heart liberal like bernie sanders.

George Galloway runs very divisive campaigns usually along religious lines. He admires putin and was a regular presenter on RT. He denies Chinas treatment of the uyghurs. Hopefully,
He pops back in his hole at the ge

Lexusgs430:
I personally feel all this politicians are the same....... A government reaches a cycle, and people would simply want a change.........

Remember, when UK residents also wanted Tony Blair out (not forgetting the brouhaha with Gordon Brown).....

Let's assume Keir gets in, his time too would come, somewhere down the line ........

A change is due ......😁

I can only point out the islamophobic nature of this train of thought and encourage you to rethink . I certainly cant stop you from repeating it at work and getting fired or getting cancelled.

I wish you wouldn't though.

Ok. Councils are pretty much autonomous and do their own thing with funding from Westminster.

I ll leave it up to the council residents to vote for better leadership(we just did in my own borough council).

Just as i and a good proportion of the UK will vote against the tories at the next GE. Identify the problem and vote against the cause. Thats always a good way to go.

-note that I haven't done any "what about" to see if this extrapolation about competence applies to other parties too?

-didnt Birmingham lose a court case recently which has been on for at least a decade which tipped them into bankruptcy?

Lexusgs430:
Let's start by mentioning Thurrock council.......😁

Then Birmingham city council.......😜
Travel › Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 9:31pm On Mar 13, 2024
Name the council, dupyshoo. I hope its not Birmingham?

Labour are not angels however waste isnt in keeping with democratic socialism. I am interested in reading about that labour council.

dupyshoo:
This is the issue I have as I think all of them are the same. For example, we know your party is responsible for a particular bankrupt council. Squandered and mismanaged the resources of the council. They are currently cutting costs and subjecting the people in the council to unnecessary hardship.
Your party is part of the problem!!!

Starmer left it way too long to call for a ceasefire.
Hamas is different from the Palestinians. I would be up in arms if the Nigerian government bombed my hometown while claiming to be hunting IPOB.

Israel had the ability to use targeted missiles to limit civilian deaths and did not use it. They even bombed hospitals and food queues. So many tiny coffins. No, not in my name. I support South Africa's case against them.

Lexusgs430:
Do you think if Keir tells Benjamin Netanyahu to seize fire ...... It would end that war ...........😜😁

My own stance....... When hamas decided to paraglide and kill ......... What did hamas think would be the reaction........ If I have a big brother that is a bully, I would just let him be ........😁

Is your life better today than 5 years ago? Mine definitely isnt.

I know exactly who is to blame and i will do everything in my power to shred them come the General Election.
A very large portion of the country agrees with me and are sharpening their claws too. Even the MPs themselves can feel it . They have been announcing their intention not to contest in droves.

This hamza has never ever been mentioned before in any context.(he is now serving life without parole in the US)
I think lexus is saying he should have been arrested earlier ,that may well be but sounds like he has got his just deserts.

I have never claimed to know everything but I don't need to. I only need to make the connection between my decline in living standards and the cause.

Addendum: I also try to keep the thread welcoming of everyone no matter the gender, religion ,sexual orientation. Thats why i called out that statement as it sounded rather islamophobic .
dupyshoo:
When is your time please cos you always come across as someone that has the solutions to all UK problems? Yet, you don't have an idea of who he was referring to.

What I can however deduce from your posts and comments is that they are usually lopsided and strongly politically motivated/influenced. Anything to sell your political views and paint the opposition party bad. Typical politician you are!!

Lexusgs430:
This imam is very polite........ How we miss that imam with the hook on one arm........ The hook imam, was clearly a terrorist + an extremist....... Yet the UK could not touch him for years....... Hook was even granted British citizenship.......... We miss you hook....... 🤣😂

No, they do not have whole communities in the UK on chokehold as the muslims on this thread will be in a better position to tell you.

Nigeria is a different story entirely. Extremism appears to be the default position.

hustla:
grin

People that have whole communities on choke hold is "1 extremist?"
Travel › Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by missjekyll: 2:51pm On Mar 13, 2024
The Imam was clearly bonkers and extremist . The teacher shouldn't have used a picture of Mohammed but that doesn't excuse the threats to life he received from extremists. I 100% agree with his decision to discuss the charlie hebdo incident with his class .

This was the finding of the independent review into that incident.

1 extremist does not speak for everyone. We ve got millions of moslems in this country who are not extremists.

Who is calling for sharia in the UK? Where? Did i miss that article?

So far as we know ,Everyone is welcome to the UK so long as you meet the criteria.
We aim to keep it that way no matter what the extremists on both sides think.

Addendum: in 2018 a committee was set up to investigate the " sharia courts", they found that they weren't courts at all, they were largely used by women almost exclusively to secure a religious divorce.

Men have the option of talaq , this is not an option that is open to women. These councils evolved to solve that problem. They needed regulation because a few of them were referring to themselves as judges when they were not but that was it.

This is why I like this country. Identify an evolving issue, investigate it and nip it in the bud.

hustla:
True cheesy

Sometimes I wonder how they let in people who are now asking for Sharia in their neighborhoods in while constantly insulting students who bring in money and pay taxes

Maybe lack of focus

A Petition has been started to force the tories to apologise to Diane Abbot. They should return that man's money too. I refuse to say his name.

He has made life even more difficult on the doorsteps for me and other women who look like me.

Please help by signing this petition. Thank you

Awesome. I was born right at this hospital many moons ago. They have continued to provide good medical care to the people of the state. Thats consistency.

IPhone don catch up finally!! At least in the EU .
On Wednesday 06/03/24,the EU passed the Digital Markets Act.
Among other things ,this Act will force Apple to allow iPhone users to install third party apps. There are also implications for Android,Amazon ,Meta and Alphabet.

Is this a good or bad development? Do you think it ll trickle down to Nigeria ? If you do think so ,when?

I am an immigrant too to some other country. It is difficult. Are you warm and open? You sound warm ,just to make sure that warmth is coming through to people around you.

If you are ,then focus on your work and give it time. Try some judiciously applied gifts to your in-laws(makeover trips are wonderful bonding experiences). Also keep in touch with other Australians in the country. A familiar accent is so comforting. And go to Australia regularly.

You ll be fine.
Peacefulplace:
I do not understand Nigerian women. I am a Australian woman married to a Igbo man. But already his mommy and sister don't like me and I still don't know why. They yell alot to each other and to my husband. They are very very bossy and rude to me.

Even Nigerian women in Lagos seem closed off and intimidating. Hard to get to know them because they seem maybe offended or talk behind my back.

It makes me feel very isolated. Difficult to make friends etc.

I know not everyones experience is the same but...I can only speak for my own. My husband thinks they are nice and friendly. But I disagree. But maybe they are just harsh and stubborn/rude to me for some reason. My husband is handsome so perhaps they are just being nice to him.
