No, I have never bought any. someone gave me 10kg short grains 'sunrice' at first but when I complained about it, he gave me 5kg long grains homebrand (it wasn't as bad as the 'sunrice' but didn't turn out the way I expected for my fried rice recipe). Then, when I complained that the rice grown in Oz are not so good, he brought 5kg long grains sunrice. lol! I don't know what to do with all of them; but I intend buying basmati rice.
this food tatafo dey sweet me sha..

Basmati rice is a bit more expensive than the rest but it is well worth it for fried rice things(my opinion). Jasmine rice is gummy gummy. as noted, not ideal for fried rice unless you are gunning for fried rice balls grin . in my area, Indian shops stock more quality basmati brands than others but i reckon other asian shops will do just fine.

If per chance you are able to, do look around for these markets around you, you never can tell when you run into some positive sales will change your life.

Hi all, as it pertains to food stuff, I think it all depends on the packaging. I came in with every kind of foodstuff, including palm oil, stockfisj
stockfish, anything you can think of. Just make certain of the following:
1. That everything is totally, as in completely dry.
2. Knorr cubes are allowed, as long as it isnt chicken knorr
3.for the fish wrap in newspapers, then foil, then newspaper, then foil again, before ziploc. No sniffer dog can sniff nada.
5. I still have my dried uziza and bitterleaf, I use to make soup.
Like I said it is all about the packaging. hope I could help.

Forgive my ignorance but did you also have to dry the palm oil? How you take do am?

Hmmm....ANZ and WESTPAC now have migrant banking options now. I got our account numbers within 48hrs. Westpac even goes as far as sending an application package to the account owner, and you can activate the account arriving, by sending over a copy of your passport.

What are the flexibilities you got with NAB?

-yeah same for me back in 2011, NAB were the only ones that guaranteed me ease of access in creating one in the shortest time possible. NAB also did the whole application package thing which was impressive for they had sent them to my destination address. Although I turned up at the bank just for the sheer purpose of meeting my account manager. Got both debit (chip) and EFTPOS cards activated that same day. didnt have to go in but i did it anyway.
-took a fixed bonus interest rate of 1.10% p.a for 9 months on top of the standard variable NAB iSaver interest rate which i think was about 5% then.
-free financial advice for the 1st year with them..

So yeah not much grin

Which would you say is the best bank, out of the big 4?

call me bias but i will stick with NAB as it was very flexible with the migrant banking option out of the 3 even though i heard there are better rates with Commonwealth.

Lycamobile & Lebara would be your best bet on prepaid mobile, they are incredibly cheap to call 9ja. Lyca charge about 29cents connection fee and 1cent/sec to 9ja.

But since you will be looking for job, I also advise that you look for a plan. That allows you to unlimited call, so as to enable you to hook up with prospective employers

Lyca has a 30$ plan that gives you unlimited calls & SMS Australia wide plus 2GB data for 30days http://www.lycamobile.com.au/en/super-saver-plan

Lebara also have something similar. Forget about $80 phone plus maybe another $40 call/data plan for now till you are settled!

As for jobs, I realised that combining traditional and modern methods of job hunting work best. By this I mean, yes you can apply for jobs online, but it is best if you can ring and chat up with your prospective employer prior to submission. Or better, walk in and drop your CV in person.

Always ask for the manager/supervisor/ contact person for a vacancy rather that discussing with receptionists. Most importantly you have to be flexible with your job search. Start from somewhere and work your way through.

Most of us from 9ja tend to have this complex about white collar/graduate jobs, but the reality here that the pay rate/hr for tradesmen (artisans in Nigerian parlance) is higher than what a lot of graduate jobs offer.

In addition, skills and experience is KING here. So lay more emphasis on what you can offer rather than on the qualifications you have.

My 2cents though.

@ The Bolded : Correct.. Your head is there..
@Bossladymo, With the phone option. go with prepaid option. you cannot go wrong with that. there is also prepaid boost mobile (blackberry options).

I think the real bonus here about the starting from somewhere is that the person(s) you end up working for will stand as your local reference. it paid out eventually grin. I learnt to follow-up with calls to the names on the adverts sometimes before and also after dropping CVs.

was not a big fan of www.seek.com.au but back then when it was reigning this side, i used this site www.snipey.com.au and it was heavenly. Connected me straight to the recruiters bypassing the agencies but shame they are under maintenance now.

PS: mehn those tradies ehn..giving their occupation the "chargeable" respect it deserves.

Your credit history is very important over there. Almost everything financial is tied to ypur credit history. You can easily make or mar it. Establishing a good credit history will come in handy when you need to secure home loans/mortgages, car loans, phone contractscredit cards, personal loans etc. You can be denied a car loan/credit card/home loan/phone contract/personal loan application, if your credit history is bad. You can also be charged higher interest on loans e.g home loans/mortgages, if you have a bad credit history.

Interestingly i have now come to understand if you really really really have to get a bank (NAB) loan for anything as well, your credit history can also consist of any of your regular payments
-regular rent payments
-if you buy a car with financing and you have set direct debit to it, ensure that you do not default in any payment.
-regular utilities (gas+electricity) payment

So if you are living..make sure you are good to go and try not to default on payments.

start date -27th oct.
God Bless
Welcome to Brisbane. CQU is in the heart of the city. you will be fine wink

Will have to agree with @FutureDon on the use of Qatar Airways as the cheapest out of the big semi-direct flights. However, given your timing, i guess you might not have an option but to go for one of them.

Also exchange rate from USD to AUD is still higher. Carry ya USD join body and enter.

Ok....

So i must come here to allay a few fears. Eventually made the trip to Canberra and i must commend the level of service i got at the High Commission. Granted that I still have a few opinions about getting a whole new passport number thing in the event of a renewal, i will add that the official [Great Service and super Service...Mr Umar] i met was very quick to assist with the explanations on why one needs a new passport number while renewing an existing one (still don't agree with this reasoning tho after all if everything were maintained online like they are, then i should be able to request an extension and not a new passport identity)

Anyways, I didn't spend up to an hour for everything there and it is was a welcome decision.

Data Capture: I was made to fill a data form twice [This was so that the High Commission can build its database of Nigerians in Australia] . The logic i did not get was why did I have to fill the same document by hand twice when it could have been photocopied after filling it once? Then again if you say that they will save money on ink..isn't that the same ink that they used to print multiple copies of the form in the first place.

Administrative fees: Still don't get why we have to pay an extra fee for Administrative services, after paying the due fare for the passsport services.

Guarantors Form: This is a requirement as even the immigration website says that it is only needed for the first timer applications, however, it is recommended for all visa applications from High commissions outside Nigeria so you have to get it while going to the High Commission.

Anyways, was glad i didnt have any sad stories to recount afterwards and it was a welcome process.

Chai!...

OP it is well...All the way from Perth.........CHAI!!!

my wife was dealt the same hand in Jo'burg. Excuse she was told was that the passport officer had taken his wife and kids to the airport and he has taken the day off, that's why she would have to come back the next week. 2 trips later, she got her kpali.

Anyways heading to Canberra myself this month. If i had my way i would have been in Lagos to get this done but oh well, lets see the excuse this time around smiley

Question tho is, did you get any subtle hints from them to "grease their palm"? If not that's a HUGE improvement if you ask me.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: The Painful Reality Of Nigerian Graduates by MisterNRC(m): 1:51pm On Jul 23, 2014
African educational systems have surprising outcomes.

The smartest students pass with First Class and get admissions to Medical and Engineering schools.
The 2nd Class students get MBAs and LLBs to manage the First Class students.
The 3rd Class students enter Politics and rule both the 1st and 2nd Class students.
The "Failures" enter the Underworld of crime and control the politicians and the businesses.

And, best of all, those who did not attend school become Prophets and everyone follows them....

What a paradox and an irony of life!☹
