A 98-year-old man, Mohammed Tahiru, on Wednesday approached an Ilorin Area Court to claim the money he allegedly spent on a 24-year-old woman he planned to marry, News Agency of Nigeria reports. Tahiru said, “I worked as an Imam, and people come to me for assistance, which I rendered. Alaba was introduced to me in 1999 by her elder sister, Iyabo Seriki, and since then, I have been assisting her. He told the court he had wanted to marry the defendant, so that she would be taking care of him and his younger children. He claimed that the defendant accepted the proposal and always came around to help him in some domestic works. The plaintiff claimed that he gave N24, 000 to the defendant for her graduation from tailoring apprenticeship as a tailor in addition to previous expenses he had incurred on her. Not long after, I was told that she was pregnant for someone else,’’ Tahiru said. The plaintiff pleaded with the court to recover the money he spent on the defendant. The Judge, Mr. Yusuf Abdulkareem, then adjourned the case till August 15, for continuation of the case and to enable the plaintiff to call witnesses to buttress his claim. http://news.naij.com/3905.html |
IBADAN—Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, in the South-West has given House of Representatives’ Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, 14 days ultimatum to resign following alleged admission that he was sanctioned by Georgia Supreme Court. In a statement by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kayode Babade, the party said: “Since he has admitted that he was sanctioned by Georgia Supreme Court for professional misconduct and negligence, the most honourable thing to do is to vacate his seat in the House of Representatives.” The Supreme Court of Georgia had on February 26, 2007 allegedly suspended Gbajabiamila from practising law for 36 months. According to the party, Gbajabiamila, a member of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, allegedly admitted violating Rule 1.15(I) of the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct set forth in Bar Rule 4-102(d). PDP claimed that he accepted payment of $25,000 as settlement of a client’s personal injury claims, deposited those funds in his attorney trust account in January 2003, failed to promptly disburse those funds to his client, withdrew those funds for his own use, closed his practice and moved out of the country. The party said although he ultimately paid the $25,000 to his client in 2006, three years after he collected the fund, his conduct violated Rule 1.15(I), which is punishable by disbarment. PDP added that said it was ridiculous that Gbajabiamila could be using the House of Representatives impeachment plot against President Goodluck Jonathan as a defence for his shady past, saying; “In a saner clime, what he (Gbajabiamila) would have done was to vacate his seat and apologise to Nigerians. “Or does it now mean that a man who admitted that he committed an offence and that he was sanctioned for it can justify same by simply claiming that he was championing good governance and impeachment of the president?” http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/07/s-west-pdp-asks-femi-gbajabiamila-to.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Nigerianeye+%28NigerianEye%29 |

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Wednesday in Abuja inaugurated the interim secretariat of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM). Jonathan, who was accompanied by other African First Ladies who are in Nigeria for the 7th AFLPM summit, said that the secretariat, which would accommodate the mission until the completion of the permanent site, would facilitate efforts to bring peace to Africa. She stressed that the secretariat would be beneficial as it would be used for deliberations on best ways to resolve conflicts and, therefore, be a vital tool in efforts to foster peace in Africa. ``I inaugurate this secretariat to the glory of God and to the benefit of mankind; this interim secretariat will bring peace to our countries and our region. ``Peace will reign in Africa, there will be no war and there will be no conflict in Jesus name,” she said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the main hall of the secretariat is designed to accommodate all the 33 African First Ladies and at least 200 observers. The secretariat is equipped with a modern press gallery with media gadgets that can transmit live reports in the four official languages in Africa: English, French, Portuguese and Arabic. Meanwhile, the First Ladies of South Africa, Sierra-Leone, Congo, Swaziland and Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic have arrived for the conference, while 15 others are still being expected. NAN also reports that Jonathan and the visiting First Ladies later inspected the facilities of the secretariat. NAN recalls that the secretariat used to be the office complex of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) but it was ceded to the AFLPM in 2011. (NAN) http://news.naij.com/3817.html

A female pedestrian was crushed to death on Thursday morning at Berger area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway by a container after it fell from a moving trailer. The trailer was heading out of Lagos around 7a.m when it lost one of its tyres, making the driver to lose control of the truck momentarily. Witnesses said that as he struggled to regain control of the truck, it tipped over to its right side. As the truck fell, it landed on the woman, who was walking beside the road, in search of a commercial bus to her destination. The unidentified woman died instantly while a gridlock formed on the outbound Lagos side of the busy expressway. Traffic officials moved to the scene and were able to lift the truck and its container with a crane back on the trailer’s tyres. A First Information Report prepared by the Federal Road Safety Commission said the accident occurred at 6.55a.m and involved a red Mack truck (XZ 637 EPE); a white Mack truck (XV 500 KRD); and a white Mazda bus (BWR 856 XA). The FIR said five men and one woman were affected in the crash. It noted that the woman died while the men escaped unhurt. The woman’s corpse was taken to Bemil Mortuary, Ojodu, Lagos by an FRSC ambulance marked Rs857A01. http://www.punchng.com/news/falling-container-kills-female-pedestrian-on-lagos-ibadan-expressway/

Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, has petitioned the Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, over the recent 15-year age limit set for aircraft operating in the country. It also urged the minister to suspend the continued grounding of Dana Airlines, ADC, Sosoliso and Bellview Airlines to enable them resume flight operations. The group’s petition came against the backdrop of the new age limit for aircraft operating in Africa set at the just-concluded aviation conference in Abuja, which played host to aviation ministers and other stakeholders on the continent. The new age limit vacates the 22 years limit set by former Aviation Minister, Mrs. Kema Chikwe, aftermath of EAS crash in Kano, which claimed about 100 lives, including those on ground. AON, in the petition by Secretary General, Capt. Mohammed Joji, said there was no co-relation between the age of an aircraft and safety, contending that much of air accidents were caused by human rather than machine errors. It stated: “There is no correlation between safety and the age of an aircraft. The decisions to retire aircraft are basically economic. Ageing aircraft require more frequent maintenance than new aircraft and this is undertaken outside Nigeria on annual basis in accordance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, SARS, under the supervision of NCAA. “A well-maintained old aircraft is better than a poorly maintained new aircraft. New aircrafts are often purchased to add capacity to the existing fleet not to immediately replace existing fleet. “Imposing a 15-year ban on aircraft is not consistence with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices. It is one of the draconian policy decisions taken without recourse to the actual industry practice. “It’s natural for a ‘lay man’ to equate the so-called old aircraft to ‘Tokunbo’, ‘Molue’ and ‘Danfo’. Just as there are aging aircraft, there are also aging or obsolete facilities and aging personnel. “Pilot, been most critical factor in the aviation industry whose age limit has been extended from 60 to 65 years in accordance with; (a) Pilot age group (JAR FCL 1.060 Licensing (b) Amendment 167 to ICAO Annex 1 dated 25th November, 2006 implies that age should not be a limiting factor for a well- maintained aircraft. IATA is currently working on 70 years provided the pilot is fit.” AON also appealed to the minister to allow Dana Airlines and other airlines that had been involved in accidents, including ADC, Sosoliso and Bellview, resume operations, arguing that their suspensions were contrary to global practices. According to the group, the continued closure of Dana Airlines has rendered its over 500 staff jobless, even as the airline still incurred salary liabilities of over N90 million monthly. http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/07/airline-operators-petition-aviation.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Nigerianeye+%28NigerianEye%29 |
