The outgoing Switzerland Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Andreas Baum today said that his country has returned over (500 million pounds) about N80 billion looted by the late Military President; Gen. Sani Abacha from the country’s treasury. Baum, who this disclosed this to reporters in Abuja also said that his country had put some measures in place to safeguard its financial system from the transfer of stolen wealth. He said that Switzerland’s financial system had improved since the controversy surrounding the loot of the late Nigerian ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha. Besides, the Swiss Ambassador, who assumed duty in 2008 in Nigeria, also revealed that there is one ongoing looting case that involved the son of the late Military President. According to him, “It is an area we have put a lot of work in. We realised that there was a problem; the measures we have taken will prevent the transfer of stolen wealth to our country. “The Nigerian case is very important to us because the Abacha case helped us to improve our laws. “We have put in place measures to ensure that the Swiss financial system is not abused with the transfer of such assets. “We have returned around 500 million dollars (about N80 billion) of the Abacha loot to Nigeria. That was done during the time of my predecessor. But there is one ongoing looting case involving the son of late Abacha’’. The envoy, who described bilateral relations between Switzerland and Nigeria as excellent, nonetheless, bemoaned the low volume of their trade, which currently stood at 500 million dollars. Baum attributed the low level of bilateral trade between the two countries to “informal and unaccounted trade’’. He noted, “This is because a lot of Swiss products, mainly oil and pharmaceuticals, come into Nigeria via other countries. “Some Swiss products come into Nigeria through the Netherlands; so it is sometimes difficult to have an accurate account of the trade volume.’’ Baum, however, stressed that plans were underway to improve on the bilateral trade, citing the visit of a trade delegation from Switzerland to Nigeria in 2010 as part of the trade improvement strategies. http://news.naij.com/4771.html

The National Orientation Agency on Thursday gave a taxi driver, Mr. Imeh Usuah, a N30,000 award in Abuja for returning N18 million left in his car by a passenger. The DG said that those harbouring a negative idea about Nigerians should change their impression, adding that peace, honesty and love should be taken as “a Nigerian factor.” He said that for Usuah, a taxi driver, to have returned N18 million showed that Nigeria still had men and women of integrity. Usuah, who plies Airport Road, Abuja said he was at the car wash when he discovered there was a bag left behind by a man he had earlier dropped off at a hotel. He said he immediately returned it. “My mind went back to the man whom I dropped at the hotel and I immediately alerted my chairman. “He instructed me to go back to the place where I dropped him. I saw him and delivered his bag to him,” the taxi driver said. Mr. Oche Elias, who represented the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, said it was a rare display of honesty. He added, “”It was a huge act of integrity and trust exhibited by Usuah.” He said that with that act, the country’s image was being corrected. He also urged all Nigerians to be involved in the management of the country’s image. Elias said the aviation ministry would organise a dinner in the taxi driver’s honour to show to the world that integrity pays. NAN reports that items often recovered by taxi drivers at the airport include handsets, books, laptops, travelling bags, among others. http://www.punchng.com/news/noa-honours-taxi-driver-for-returning-passengers-n18m/ |

Senate President, David Mark said in Abuja on Thursday that the military was better off in a democratic setting since it performed its constitutional roles without interference Mark said this at a dinner organised by the National Defence College for Graduates of Course 20 participants and also to mark the 20th anniversary of the college according to him, the military was getting back to its glorious days where the personnel did their constitutional duties and nobody would think they would do otherwise’ “So we have accepted that democracy is the order of the day and the military regime is no more in fashion and is completely outdated. “And the Nigerian Armed Forces are so well trained, that they understand that constitutional democracy is the order of the day, so I want to thank you for that,’’ he said. Mark said the Course 20 participants had the most challenging period following the spate of suicide bombings in the country, adding that the challenge they had during the course was an opportunity for them to review most of the activities of the suicide bombers. “And anything you cannot solve militarily , then it is assumed that it is difficult for any military institution to solve and the challenge that you have must have informed your new syllabus and the new thinking that the college is working on,” he added. Mark said by changing the name of the college from war to defence college showed that the tendency in the world now was not to fight war but to defend. While calling for synergy between NASS and the college, he assured the commandant, staff and participants of the college that the National Assembly would do what it can in terms of legislation to make sure that they are properly equipped to deliver the best training.
