Imagine that the guy started learning VB in 2004, by now, VS 2008 and even VS 2010 has been released and Most of what he learnt in VB is no more in use. He has to start his self paced 9 years training again with VB.NET. That's the way he will continue till he dies at his old age without any record of being a programmer.

@lojik, no doubt u have become the person  of your dreams, good for you, but your comment there was too harsh. I agree with you in some cases, like results matters. I'm a self thought programmer ( with the help of Aboho community,  Nairaland, DHTML, Tony, etc - thanks to everyone) , I can write programs in different languages and still learning more, When I started, every1 knows me to be a programmer, but then what have you produced? I have to start creating applications, softwares, writing scripts, etc, Though i'm not perfect but i'm still learning, Undergraduate in Comp Sci though, This has limit my achievement in programming, I have to keep up my CGPA on the high, but still i  write programs everyday cos it my passion, i love it,

It depends on what you intend to do and not necessarily the language. I started with java but despite all the hype, it still can't handle large programs like games which led me to c/c++. C/C++ happens to be the standard(to me) cuz it's widely used and very powerful. Almost everything can be done with it. Most of the best games and large scale software have something to do with it. Even java was developed from it. You should envision what you want to be developing in future to get an idea of what language would be suitable for it.

I need help with this project, my brother works with Galaxy Backbone, whenever his in the office the desktop wallpaper of the laptop changes to that of the office showing the address, image etc, on the desktop, but when the laptop is connected to another internet access it does not show it, dats my challenge. can some pls pull this. Infact all of you are wrong, what determines the programming language to use is the type of application you want to build. You look at which one is better 4 that application. I can write some programs easily in FORTRAN which you can hardly do in Java (FORTRAN has many Maths Intrinsic functions that java don't have), u doubt me? Even d common notepad I can develop in minutes using VB6. Depends on the type of application u are writing. then u will know what programming language suits u, I'm learning everyday, Guess what, I started with Q basic, C, Java, Javascript, PHP, AJAX, VB, and now VB.net, School is making me lazy did days, do u know u can make your windows based applications to be used on other OS. I'm currently doing my I.T in SystemSpecs, What Programming language was used in developing the software for Sim Registration?

thanks Donpuzo, the conditional statementS work. i used java in doing it, im working on the GUI. The next thing i want is to display the program in a Jframe & Jcomponent where the questions will be asked & two radio buttons showing yes and no respectively. and then and ok button when clicked upon goes to the next question. im working on it, i might need some help. thanks.

hi nairalanders, i wnt to write a program that ask several question from its user, at the end it gives the user a respond based on the user answers. for example, 1. are u having headaches? 2 is your temperature high? Etc, d program will respond by saying probably u are having fever. I asked my lecture he said such programs are used for expert system. I need help pls, how do i go abt the programming (using java). thanks
