casualobserver: Tinubu did not “prevent”, he protested against subsidy removal. There are 2 different things. Just like Atiku and Obi who today are complaining about subsidy removal and currency floating bot said they would do the same things in their campaigns. That’s what politicians do, they lie because if they tell you the truth you won’t vote for them.
What that shows is that the Jonathan government of the day was weak and knowing that subsidy had to be removed did not have the balls to do what was right for the country. I know obi would have done things differently and will put Nigeria first in most occasions than these thieving politicians who put themselves first 90% of the time before anything. Jonathan put the citizen of Nigeria first but you see him as weak. Tpain is putting himself first with his wasteful spending of government money in a time of austerity, new plane, new yatch, new cars etc |

Freetech: .... but how is this epistle by punch help the hungry beggars?
God gave us large expanse of land and favourable weather but what do we do with it?
Why do we need food import from Niger, Cameroon, Benin Republic to feed? Laziness
Reading everything here show that Punch editor is economical with the truth. Expanding problem hiding solution
The root cause of our problem is laziness, prodigy and indiscriminate procreation depleting our $ and doubling our population every 20years.
People are spending 30-40m to japa, where do they get the money from the same Nigeria with the so call dead economy.
More than 20% of our dollar now go to paying of school fees abroad and other frivolities like birthday wedding and senseless vacation in Dubai etc. So government should continue subsidizing $ for them.
Everyone is criticizing, nobody offer solution. Very amusing when Obi the all round failure said he will borrow to sustain subsidy, in a country already using more than 70% of income to service debt continue to justify the failure of a party and government who never had you in mind. Go and find out about the current wastefulness of this government. As public analysts, have reiterated this wastefulness of our resources, they now embark on face saving measure of 3 vehicles for a ministerial convoy and limited number of entourage for foreign trips after a year in office. Not ready to take those hard decisions that will affect them more. Now the IMF are distancing themselves from the floating of naira and subsidy removal decisions of this government after seeing the catastrophic effect of such policy in light of the Dangote refinery commencing fuel refining in the country |

nairalanda1: They can , but it won't raise enough funds for subsides
To keep fuel below 200 naira per liter would eat two thirds of our budget. Meaning no money to even pay basic salaries , talkless of looting
Apc is still worng for excess spending though. There is a reason why I never voted for them that was why i wanted obi even if he was making tough decisions as tinubu might be making but i was sure he would cut down the running cost of government and over inflated contracts being awarded |
Politics › Re: ‘How Do We Survive?’ - Nigerians Lament Fresh Fuel Price Hike by mokset123: 4:25pm On Oct 09, 2024 |
nairalanda1: Peter Obi was the best candidate, no be lie, but let's be honest, under Obi, we would have had the same result.
By May 2023, the results of decades of borrowing to pay for subsides since the late 1970's was in, and we had a lot of debt from maintaining subsides, which, among other things, was contributing to debt eating 99% of our government revenue.
At the end, and please let's put politics aside, APC, PDP, LP and company, Igbo and Yoruba aside......how are you going to pay for subsides with debt servicing eating 90% of our revenue? Is it by miracle, or by more loans while we wait for the results of good policies.?
Whoever took over, we were in dire straits. Either subsides were removed, or we got into taking more loans...to the point where debt would be eating something like 150% of our revenue. Then we go see shege...real shege.
The annoying thing about this APC government is that they are still doing the same old looting, and same old sharing money, but vote in Obi, and nothing could be done....and even if he raised prices to N400 , it would just be what Buhari was doing all this time ....which worsened the debt situation in the first place...among other causes.
I effing hate to sound like I am defending this government, and lord knows I don't like being called an APC supporter, when I have not voted for either big parties since I started voting., and when I have been suspicious of tinubu since 2005 (when Gani raised questions about his certificate back then)....but in 2023, may... this is what was happening.
debt service was eating 90% of our revenue Subsidy funding was going to run out by June ending...no matter what tinubu did...and the only way to get subsidy back was by either taking more loans, or removing it to get more extra money, and then using some of that to fund subsidy.
And even now the subsidy that tinubu brught back is causing us more issues...debt has risen again.
What magic would you perform to keep fuel below N200 Per liter, without taking loans and suchlike.?
AM sure you would call me agbado.......but we were in a shitty situation, and it was godawful. Make no mistake, vote Obi, vote Kwankwaso....it would have produced the same result re oil prices.
Yes, I am angry with APC, and they are useless.....but politcs aside, unless you have a pot filled with 130 trillion naira....no way we were going to keep fuel prices low.
The problem with Nigeria is that we keep making the same mistakes over and over again, whoever is in charge , because we don't want to do the right thing, and we don't want to end corruption. yet they cannot cut the cost of running government. Continue u go explain tire |

Instead, he panicked at the sight of a protesters in Ojota and promptly changed his mind.
You can't blame anybody but Mr Jonathan himself for his failure to remove subsidy.
If he had removed it then, the trillions and trillions that Nigeria lost to subsidy over the years would not have been the case. yet this same government were the persons who sponsored that 2012 protest abeg e |
