Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen, will know if he will become the substantive one on Wednesday, March 1. Senate President Bukola Saraki revealed during plenary, on Tuesday, that the confirmation hearing for the chief justice would be held on Wednesday. Recall that the Senate confirmed reception of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s confirmation letter of acting chief justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen to the upper house of legislature last week. In the letter, Osinbajo requested that the Senate move ahead with screening and consequent confirmation of Onnoghen as the country’s substantive chief justice. Meanwhile, a recent report by Thisday indicates that President Muhammadu Buhari actually directed acting president Yemi Osinbajo to submit the name of Acting Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen’s name to the Senate for confirmation. This is contrary to some media reports which claimed Osinbajo acted on his own in taking the decision. http://sunnewsonline.com/cjn-onnoghen-knows-fate-march-1/

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed how late South African President, Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu counselled him into running for Presidency in 1999. Speaking during a church service to mark his 80th birthday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Ibogun-born ex-President disclosed that both Mandela and Tutu advised him to heed the call of his people to lead them. Obasanjo said he sought the advice of the two South African leaders shortly after he was released from prison for offence he knew nothing about. According to Obasanjo, “When the pressure to contest started shortly after my release from prison from offence I knew nothing about, two persons came to mind—Madiba and Tutu. “I went to South Africa and I met Mandela then, he said I should follow my instinct. I also went to Desmond Tutu and he said that I wanted to offend God. If your people want you to serve God why are you saying no?” He went on: “I returned to Nigeria and one day by accident while opening my Bible, I opened the Book of Esther. Today all is history, but in all this, I will say that God has been impartial to me. Because where I was born, it is unimaginable that somebody will come out from the place and become all these.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/27/mandela-desmond-tutu-advised-run-president-1999-obasanjo/

Difference between Buhari and Osibanjo, Osibanjo tell Emefiele to do whatever he has to do in order to strengthen the naira. While Buhari tell Emefiele to do whatever I ask you to do to strengthen the naira. Now we can see the difference. Buhari is not an economist but believe he knows what to do and refuse to give those economist free hand to operate. Osibanjo is now giving Emefiele free hand. It is like telling him do what ever you have to do in order for naira to be strengthen or I will sack you, in that case you will have to approve what ever he want to implement and after that if there is no improvement, you can fire him for incompetent. It seems we are beginning to getting it right. |
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday struck out the names of four accused charged with N3.4 billion fraud alongside a former Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi. Mr. Akpobolokemi, a former D-G Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, was charged with nine others on a 40-count charge bordering on fraud. Other accused charged with him are: Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Felix Bob-Nabena, Warredi Enisouh, Governor Juan, Ugo Frederick and Timi Alari. Also charged with him are two companies: Al-kenzo Ltd., and Penniel Engineering Services Ltd. They were arraigned before Justice Saliu Saidu and had all pleaded not guilty to the charges and granted bail by the court. However, following the transfer of Mr. Saidu from Lagos to the Port Harcourt division of the court, the case was re-assigned to Justice Ayokunle Faji. On Friday, the prosecuting counsel, Festus Afeyiodion, informed the court of an amended 22-count charge, in which the names of four accused had been withdrawn. The four accused withdrawn from the charges are: Governor Juan, Ugo Frederick, Timi Alari, and Penniel Engineering Services Limited. He urged the court to strike out the names of the four accused, while a fresh plea by the remaining accused should be taken. The counsel to Mr. Juan, Ige Asemudara, expressed mixed feeling while reacting to the withdrawal. Mr. Asemudara said that his client had been tormented, embarrassed, and emotionally tortured for the past two years on account of the charges. He said that the damages done to Mr. Juan’s career and his family, were monumental, but gave all the glory to God. Consequently, Justice Faji granted the prayers of the prosecution, and struck out the names of the four accused. Meanwhile, another defence counsel, E.D. Onyeike, raised an objection to the appearance of the prosecutor (Afeyiodion) on the grounds that he could not prosecute without a fiat. The court has, however, fixed March 17, for arguments on whether or not the prosecutor had a right to prosecute. In the charge, the accused were alleged to have committed the offences between December 2013 and July 2015. They were alleged to have converted over N3.4 billion belonging to NIMASA to their personal uses. The offences contravened Sections 15 (1), (3), and 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (prohibition) Amendment Act., 2012. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/224503-n3-4-billion-nimasa-fraud-efcc-withdraws-charges-four-accused.html

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development says it will liaise with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to investigate the alleged importation of garri from India. Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who made this known on Wednesday in Abuja, said that it is ”strange and ridiculous” that garri would be imported when there is enough supply of cassava and garri in the country. He said that the country produces more cassava that India, adding that Nigerians must change their attitude towards imported goods. “Whoever buys that kind of garri should be blamed. “I have heard of it. I will find out by tomorrow if NAFDAC indeed did certify any garri from India; unless it is some Indian companies packaging the garri here. “Nigerians are too ready to buy anything imported. They will bring in apples and some of them have been preserved with ethanol which is not healthy for our consumption. “Whoever is importing garri from India, something must be wrong with them. Why import garri when you do not know the conditions through which the garri was produced over there. “ I have no powers to stop imports, but I can recommend to the Nigerian Customs that this is unreasonable. I produce and encourage Nigerians to eat what they produce because it is safer for them,’’ Ogbeh said. The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that some sections of the media reported the existence of NAFDAC certified imported garri from India in some departmental stores and open markets across the country. NAFDAC has however, denied the certification of such imported agricultural produce. ![]() http://guardian.ng/news/indian-garri-fg-to-investigate-alleged-importation/ |

Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, for the second time has called on the National Assembly to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari. Mohammed had recently advised the Nigerian Senate to impeach Buhari whom he alleged seems to be “incapacitated and unable to discharge his duties as President of Nigeria.” The President who has been on medical Vacation in the UK had extended his 10-days vacation, citing health reasons. Just yesterday, the President through his media aide, Femi Adesina revealed that a series of medical check-ups he carried out in the cause of his vacation had necessitated his prolonged stay in London. But reacting to Buhari’s reason for extension of his vacation yesterday, Mohammed said it’s obvious that the Presidency is not being truthful to Nigerians. Mohammed claimed that the cabal surrounding the President will destroy Nigeria. According to the elder statesman, “What is happening right now is very unfortunate because evidence has since shown that the President’s handlers are not telling us the truth. “They are playing on the intelligence of the masses, who took time to register, vote and some even died while voting. I feel Nigerians deserve better than what we are getting right now. “The 1999 Nigerian constitution is very clear that should the President be unable to prosecute his work, he should hand over power or resign instead of holding on to power. If the National Assembly does not move to impeach the President, corruption will continue in this government. “The plan by the cabal around Buhari is to bundle him into the country and make it look as if he is ruling when he is not actually in charge. The cabal does not mean well for this country and if we are not careful, they will ruin this country.” http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/22/national-assembly-must-impeach-buhari-now-junaid-mohammed/ |
South Africa’s decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, ICC, was unconstitutional, a court in the country’s administrative capital, Pretoria, ruled Wednesday. South Africa announced in October that it was leaving the ICC on the grounds that its membership hampered its efforts to help resolve conflicts in Africa. The main opposition Democratic Alliance took the government to court, arguing that Justice Minister Michael Masutha acted unlawfully by announcing the withdrawal without seeking parliamentary approval. Judge Phineas Mojapelo said the power to conduct international treaties belonged to the executive, but that such agreements must go before parliament. In 2016, Burundi, South Africa and The Gambia, expressed their intentions to withdraw from the court. But on February14, The Gambia told the UN that it would remain in the ICC, reversing the previous administration’s plan to withdraw from the tribunal. Subsequently, Namibia, Kenya and Uganda also began to contemplate withdrawing from ICC. The court has repeatedly been criticised by African states as an inefficient, neo-colonial institution of the Western powers to try African countries. This argument is supported by the fact that nine of 10 situations under investigation, with three others under preliminary investigations, involve African countries. African state parties to the Rome Statute make up the biggest regional membership, comprising 34 of the 124 members. From 2009, African countries have called for collective withdrawal from the ICC but some countries have pushed back. Nigeria, Senegal, Cape Verde and some other countries resolved to remain with the ICC. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/224237-court-invalidates-south-africas-withdrawal-icc.html |

Prophet T.B. Joshua released more prophecies to his congregation at The Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) on Sunday specifically calling for prayer for President Muhammadu Buhari’s health. “I have some burning issues which I want to share with you,” Joshua began before breaking his silence on the tensions currently engulfing Nigeria in the wake of Buhari’s prolonged absence on medical leave in the United Kingdom. “Your president has good intentions. Good intentions cannot be carried out alone without good followers”. “The priority of every Nigerian citizen now is the good health of your President because it can be anyone’s turn tomorrow. What you wish for others, God makes happen to you.” Calling on congregants to rise up in prayer for President Muhammadu Buhari, he prayed specifically for “strength where there is weakness.” Joshua went further to offer a profound prayer for Nigeria’s democracy. “More importantly, we also have to rise up and pray that the Lord should give us the grace to sustain democracy. Pray for an uninterrupted democracy,” he said, much to the surprise of the congregation. The cleric then re-echoed his prophecy in December 2015 about the devaluation of the Nigerian currency and a widespread scarcity of food. According to him, the Naira would reach a ratio of 650 to one US Dollar on the black market before it stabilises “if the system agrees with Divine will.” Joshua said these issues would continue to plague the country “until June.” The cleric further addressed the political crisis engulfing the Democratic Republic of Congo, stating he turned down an invitation from President Joseph Kabila several years earlier to visit the nation as he was “waiting for a revelation from God.” Joshua recalled that he sent a delegation in his stead with a message warning the Congolese government of an impending crisis. “Pray for God’s intervention in DRC because I am seeing trouble coming – a big trouble,” Joshua stated, also calling on the congregation to pray for parts of Southern Africa affected by natural disasters and against an impending famine in Ethiopia. Joshua described the bane of the African political sphere as the pursuit of good leaders as opposed to good institutions. He said that many African leaders chose cabinet members based on their hefty campaign contributions, as opposed to their qualities and loyalty, a trend that has led many Presidents to be frustrated during their stints in office. “That someone gives you money does not mean they are your friend. Your enemy can even establish you in a big way for reasons known to him. Why should those in the same political party be fighting themselves?” Joshua said the lack of right people around a leader has led to both businesses and churches. “The people that represent their branches often crumble their vision. The way out is – as you are growing, take time to train and impart to people. If not, by the time you finish growing, you will end up using an enemy to help you.” Joshua decried the attitude of blaming a country’s government for an individual’s woes, stating the main challenge was that “the world is running out of ideas.” “Where there is no idea, money is useless. When you run out of ideas, you begin to imitate others.” Source: http://dailypost.ng/2017/02/20/buhari-needs-prayers-dollar-will-hit-n650-tb-joshua-gives-new-prophecies/ |
