emkz: Very well.
All those lawmakers who demanded bribes should be aware of one thing:
If the lid is not blown, you may get away with it. But once the lid is blown open, you are scarred for life. Recall a shining star in Kano who ruined his political career by collecting bribes to cover up a subsidy probe? Remember the senators who collected bribes from a former minister of education to pad his budget?
Always remember that ill-gotten money will finish. You either spend it completely, or you die and leave it behind. But a scarred name is eternal. Whenever your name is mentioned, it would be associated with graft.
As for this Binance guy, I have only one question for him: why didn't he expose these while he was in custody? Has he been healed of his leg pain then?
All of them are corrupt.
As for those asking how he could have exposed them: he had access to his lawyers, visitors and his Binance colleagues. It is not too hard to understand. Sorry to be rude, are you in Nigeria at all? |

Crime › Police Officers Kidnap Businessman In Enugu, Threaten To Label Him IPOB/ESN Memb by Morbeta11(op): 7:20am On Feb 14, 2025 |
Police Officers Kidnap Businessman In Enugu, Threaten To Label Him IPOB/ESN Member, Extort N62Million From Him
A disturbing trend of labelling high-profile victims as members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or Eastern Security Network (ESN) has emerged within the Enugu Command of the Nigeria Police Force.
This tactic is allegedly used to extort large sums of money from the victims, with the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, accused of sanctioning the criminal operation as the spoils are shared in percentage.
It was gathered that the anti-kidnapping squad and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) engage in such criminal operations, dropping the name of the commissioner and providing account numbers to allegedly receive payments from victims, thus avoiding traces.
The recent case involves Mr. Olu Agwu, who was abducted in his village at Abiriba, in the Ohafia local government area of Abia State, on December 26, 2024. He was handcuffed, blindfolded, and taken with his brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicle to an unknown destination until he found himself at the Enugu State Police Command anti-kidnapping squad unit along the Enugu-Abakaliki Road, where he was detained for three days under extreme conditions.
An investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that Olu Agwu was released after being forced to pay N62 million to different accounts associated with some senior police officers.
Some of the money was allegedly for the Inspector General of Police, an Assistant Inspector General of Police, and the state Commissioner of Police.
Security sources informed SaharaReporters that Agwu's attempts to understand why he was being taken to an unknown location by his abductors were unsuccessful, as the policemen involved neither wore uniforms nor revealed their identities.
"It was when he got to Enugu anti-kidnapping squad unit that they removed his blindfold and then flashed a document claiming that the Inspector General of Police endorsed that he should be arrested.
"The allegation against him initially was that he kidnapped his friend, identified as one Mgboji Michael Umeh, who was deported from Vietnam and that he is a member of IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN)," said a security source who revealed that the injustice done to the young man weighs heavily on his conscience.
According to the source, the investigating police officer (IPO) named Emmanuel Ahamefuna claimed that when he kidnapped his friend, he forced him to pay a ransom of N400 million into a specific account.
The source said, "So they flashed him a petition purportedly signed by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
“Unfortunately, information from grapevine indicates that it was a lie. They just fabricated it to extort him having found some millions of naira in his bank account. So they now asked him to pay N400 million back.
"The suspect, Agwu, said he could not pay such money because he did not kidnap his friend and if his friend claimed that he kidnapped him, that it was very simple: they (police) should find out the account where the money was paid to.
“That was how they dropped the issue of kidnapping and said that his friend said he owed him money.
"That he must agree to pay the friend or they will charge him for being a member of IPOB/ESN, a tag that nobody will like to associate himself with.
“The young man told the commander Supol Chuks O. Odum that they knew he was not a member of ESN, so why were they forcing him to admit that he was one?"
The source noted that at this point, one of the officers from the anti-kidnapping squad, in an attempt to frighten Agwu, told him that the three men standing at the gate were EFCC officials there to arrest him if he didn't cooperate.
Agwu then questioned, "Whisk me away for what?" The police officers responded, saying that to avoid that, he should comply immediately.
"He told them that he didn't have N400 million and didn't owe his friend. They insisted that he owed his friend and must pay the money.
He firmly stated that he couldn't agree to something he didn't have. When the policemen asked how much he had, he replied that he had no money. At this point, they began threatening to charge him in court as an IPOB/ESN member. They asked if he could pay N200 million," the source said.
"Meanwhile, they brought in a man who claimed to be a lawyer and another who introduced himself as Hon. Ochi Nonso. These individuals were part of a gang set up to extort him. During the three days he was in custody, they didn't allow him to contact anyone until he agreed to pay them."
At this point, the man asked for the opportunity to call someone in his state to let them know where he was.
The source said, "He managed to call the traditional ruler of Amaogudu, Eze Ukpari. The monarch called the police, but they told him that he would be arrested if he was seen around the police anti-kidnapping squad. Out of fear, no one came to his aid because everyone who called was threatened."
Another close source told SaharaReporters that after they denied him access to communicate with anyone or for anyone to come for him, including other traditional rulers, "the police started telling him that he couldn't leave the anti-kidnapping squad in Enugu, that they would either kill him as a member of ESN or he had to agree to pay the money”.
The source explained that the officers first asked Agwu if he could pay N200 million, to which he responded that he didn't have the money.
They then inquired about N100 million, and Agwu replied that he didn't have that amount either but would start looking for the money if allowed to.
Out of fear that they might kill him or brand him as anything, Agwu reluctantly agreed.
However, he informed them that he didn't have the money immediately available. The officers then demanded that he give them what he had, as they had already checked his account balance and knew he had some money.
While they were pressuring him to pay, Mr. Chinedu, who went by the nickname Oji aka Egbu Ele, told Agwu, "You should just pay the money if you value your life because the IGP is aware."
Chinonso, claiming to be an Honorable and having brought a lawyer, insisted that Agwu should pay N20 million to the Commissioner of Police to cancel the court order they were planning to secure for his indefinite detention.
SaharaReporters gathered that Mr. Chinedu, who claimed to be an associate of the Commissioner of Police, had been sending voice notes to Agwu, demanding the N100 million after he was eventually released, or else he would be declared wanted if he defaulted on the payment. Mr. Chinedu claimed that part of the money was for the IGP and that he needed his own share.
However, a video clip obtained by SaharaReporters on Thursday shows an agreement for the payment being read to Mr. Agwu.
"The CP has given order that you should be detained indefinitely but because you have agreed to pay the N100 million, you will be released but before then you will bring N20 million to go and settle the CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, and when you pay the N100 million, the whole matter will be resolved and the court order will not come up again," a voice is heard saying in the video.
SaharaReporters gathered that after N20 million was paid to UBA Account 2317939457, belonging to Ike Onwuka Chinedu, supposedly for the settlement of the CP and IGP, they then instructed him to settle his friend Michael, who they claimed he owed N400 million.
"They asked him to pay N30 million to settle his friend and provided an account for the payment. The account belonged to one Chinedu," one of the sources told SaharaReporters.
"The policemen then told him that out of the N100 million, he would need to pay them N10 million, representing 10 percent of the total amount. They claimed this was their fee for recovering money.
“They provided a Sterling Bank account, 0074619796, belonging to Abah Emeka Samuel, where he paid the N10 million. After paying the money, totalling N60 million, IPO Emmanuel Ahamefuna demanded an additional N2 million to change the statement they had asked him to sign. Although they knew he wasn't a member of IPOB ESN, they insisted on N2 million to alter the statement. This brought the total to N62 million. After this, they released him that night to go and gather the remaining N100 million. Meanwhile, they kept his Hilux van.
“When he said he had already paid N30 million, they responded that the N30 million was for a peace deal and that he needed to bring a fresh N100 million."
A close friend of Mr. Agwu told SaharaReporters that when he was released, he mentioned he was looking for N100 million.
"I told him that since he had already paid N30 million, with N70 million remaining, and they were now demanding a fresh N100 million, there was every indication that even if he paid the N100 million, the demands would continue. He should instead inform the authorities about what was happening," the friend said.
According to the friend, who gave his name as Okachi Ozola, "Mr. Agwu is not a member of IPOB/ESN, but he told me that he mentioned in his statement that he had a business with his friend Michael when he was in Vietnam before he was deported”.
He said, “His friend provided an account for a transaction with a white man, who then paid the money. Unfortunately, because his friend didn't share any portion of the money the white man paid, my friend backed out.
"Aggrieved that after my friend backed out of their business, he couldn't convince the white man to pay him for any further business. He felt my friend might have diverted the man to another business or cornered him. So that was the only issue.
"Using his relationship with the police commissioner in Enugu State, his friend decided to leverage the law to abduct him and keep him at the anti-kidnapping unit, threatening to kill him if he didn't pay the N400 million they thought he might have made from the business. They weren't sure if he made any money, so labelling him a member of IPOB ESN was the only way to extort money from him."
SaharaReporters learned that when they were at the CP's office on Saturday, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu said that if Mr. Agwu paid the N100 million, the allegations of being a kidnapper and a member of IPOB ESN would be permanently closed.
Audio evidence obtained by SaharaReporters reveals a conversation between Agwu and the police, in which the officers demand payment and threaten to declare him wanted if he does not comply.
Calls for Accountability
The incident has raised concerns about police brutality, extortion, and the misuse of power. There are calls for the authorities to investigate the allegations and hold those responsible accountable.
As one source noted, "The police are supposed to protect citizens, not extort money from them."
When SaharaReporters contacted the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for a response, he denied any knowledge of the matter.
He said: “I have not heard anything of such in Enugu, anywhere in Enugu. But if you have such reports, kindly forward the evidence to me. Let me see.”
Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the Commissioner of Police were unsuccessful, as he did not answer his calls. https://saharareporters.com/2025/02/13/police-officers-kidnap-businessman-enugu-threaten-label-him-ipobesn-member-extort#google_vignette

South African Judicial Conduct Committee Upholds Henry Okah's Complaint Against Chief Justice Zondo
The Judicial Conduct Committee in South Africa has set aside the dismissal of a complaint filed by a Nigerian national, Henry Okah, against Chief Justice Zondo.
Okah, a Nigerian national and former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), had been convicted of terrorist activities in South Africa and sentenced to 24 years in prison.
The complaint alleged that Okah's court cases were irregularly tampered with before being presented to the justices, leading to their dismissal.
The Judicial Conduct Committee ruled that the issue was not solely related to the merits of the orders, but rather about the alleged tampering with Okah's cases.
The Committee in a ruling on Wednesday in appeal Ref no: JSC/25/03/24 between Henry Okаh - Complainant and Chief Justice Zondo - Respondents, referred the matter back to the Acting Chairperson for an inquiry under section 17 of the Judicial Service Commission Act.
This decision was made in accordance with section 18(4) of the Act, which guides the committee's decision-making process in appeals against dismissals.
It's worth noting that Okah has been unsuccessful in his appeals against his conviction and sentence, including an appeal to the Constitutional Court.
Despite this, he believes his incarceration is in breach of international law and the South African Constitution.
The ruling which was delivered by Jafta, Saldulker and Mabindla-Boqwana JJA of the JCC, held that the issue was about an alleged irregular tampering with the complainant's cases before they were presented to the Justices of the Court, while the complaint was not directed at the decision making process or the decision reached by the Justices.
"Evidently the complainant accepted that, on the papers placed before them, the dismissal of his applications was justified. But he complained that his applications were tampered with so as to ensure that they failed. This analysis reveals that the complaint is not solely related to the merits of the orders."
"What remains for consideration is the decision to be made in this appeal. Section 18(4) of the Act guides us in that regard. In an appeal against a dismissal effected in terms of section 15, this provision stipulates that having considered the relevant information, the Committee must either confirm or set aside the dismissal.
"For reasons set out above, the present dismissal cannot be confirmed. It must be set aside and the complaint must be remitted to the Acting Chairperson for an inquiry in terms of section 17 of the Act. It must be emphasised that, the referral has nothing to do with whether or not there is merit in the complaint, but with the fact that the matter ought to have been referred to a section 17 enquiry, given the fact that the complaint was not solely related to the merits of the judgment or order, which can be summarily dismissed in terms of section 15 of the Act.
"In the circumstances the dismissal of the complaint is set aside and the matter is referred to the Acting Chairperson for an inquiry under section 17 of the Act."
The six page ruling which SaharaReporters obtained on Thursday, partly read: "this is an appeal by Mr Henry Okah (the complainant) against a decision of the Acting Chairperson in terms of which a complaint lodged against Chief Justice Zondo (the respondent) was summarily dismissed under section 15(2) of the Judicial Service Commission Act'. This provision authorises the Chairperson of the Judicial Conduct Committee (Committee) with whom complaints are lodged, to dismiss a complaint that has certain defects. Section 15(5) vests the right of appeal in a complainant who is unhappy with the dismissal of a complaint. This appeal was lodged in terms of that provision.
"The context in which the complaint arose is the following. The complainant was arrested in South Africa for terrorist activities committed in Nigeria by a group called the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). He is a Nigerian national and at the relevant time he was the leader of MEND and lived in South Africa. He was tried and convicted in the High Court. A sentence of 24 years imprisonment was imposed on him and he is currently serving that sentence in this country.
"On a number of occasions, he sought to challenge the conviction and sentence. All appeals lodged by him were unsuccessful, including an appeal to the Constitutional Court. Although he regarded himself as a prisoner of war under International Law, he contends that his incarceration is in breach of section 37 of the Constitution and Article 5 of the Third Geneva Convention of 1949. Even though these instruments apply to persons detained without trial during war and despite the fact that he underwent a trial which resulted in a sentence of imprisonment, he believes that they apply to him."
It added, "Based on this belief he instituted numerous applications which he described as habeas corpus applications. These are applications usually instituted for the release of persons who are unlawfully detained. He alleged that these applications were initiated in the Constitutional Court. He also lodged an application that sought rescission of that Court's order in terms of which his appeal was dismissed. However, he contended, that staff in the office of the Registrar of that Court failed to place them before the Court.
"He stated that it was only after he had threatened the Registrars' staff with legal action that his applications were placed before the Justices of the Court. But some of the papers he had filed were removed from the relevant files and replaced with fake documents designed to ensure that his applications were dismissed. He stated further that the wrongful conduct by the Registrar's staff was instigated by the respondent.
"As mentioned the complaint was summarily dismissed on the ground that it solely related to the merits of the orders issued by the Court.
"The complainant was not satisfied with the dismissal and he lodged an appeal. In particular he took issue with the reason on which the dismissal was based. He pointed out that the wrongful conduct outlined above occurred at the behest of the respondent. In his own words he framed one of the grounds of appeal in these terms:
"I asserted in my complaint that in sabotaging my applications, staff members of the office of the Registrar had acted on the instruction of the Chief Justice, Justice Raymond Zondo, who I am made to believe has been in regular contact with the Government of Nigeria and others in South Africa and elsewhere who have an interest in perpetuating my captivity in South Africa".
"Notably the complaint is not about the respondent's involvement in issuing the orders in question, nor is it about whether on the papers placed before the Justices of the Court those orders were not justified. Instead the complaint is about conduct which occurred before the applications were considered and which, according to the complainant, was designed to frustrate them.
"In disputing that the complaint related solely to the merits of the orders, the complainant stated in the affidavit filed on appeal: "With respect, where I allege that authentic documents which I filed in the Court were not placed before its Justices and such allegations are not shown to be unfounded, my complaint cannot reasonably be said to be in relation to the merits of any judgement or order".
"On appeal section 18(3) of the Act¹ enjoins this Committee to consider the reasons for the dismissal, the grounds of appeal and representations made by the complainant and the respondent, if any. Despite the invitation from the Committee, the respondent made no representations. As a result, the appeal must be evaluated with reference to the reason furnished for the dismissal, the complaint, the grounds of the appeal and the representations made by the complainant."
"Relevant to this exercise are the allegations that officials in the office of the Registrar tampered with the complainant's cases by replacing some of the papers with fake ones and that in doing so these officials were carrying out the respondent's instruction. While it is hard to believe that the respondent was involved in such conduct, this scepticism is an irrelevant consideration at this point. This Committee is not called upon to determine the merits or demerits of those allegations. Rather it is required to establish whether the allegations are solely related to the merits of the relevant orders. Put differently the Committee is required to determine whether the complaint was exclusively directed at the merits of the orders.
"A careful examination of the complaint indicates that it is about an alleged irregular tampering with the complainant's cases before they were presented to the Justices of the Court. The complaint was not directed at the decision making process or the decision reached by the Justices. Evidently the complainant accepted that, on the papers placed before them, the dismissal of his applications was justified. But he complained that his applications were tampered with so as to ensure that they failed. This analysis reveals that the complaint is not solely related to the merits of the orders." https://saharareporters.com/2025/02/13/south-african-judicial-conduct-committee-upholds-henry-okahs-complaint-against-chief#google_vignette

The state government identified the development of the 4-star hotel as one of the top 15 capital projects of the state for 2025.
Areview of the Anambra State 2025 approved budget by SaharaReporters has revealed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has allocated the sum of N15 billion for the development of a 4-star hotel in Awka, the state capital.
This is contained in the Anambra State 2025 Citizens Budget document signed by the state’s Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, and obtained by SaharaReporters.
The state government identified the development of the 4-star hotel as one of the top 15 capital projects of the state for 2025.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters’ review of the 2025 Fiscal Appropriation Action of the administration shows that the state government allocated only a total of N195 million to 650 primary health centres, health posts and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku.

Nigerian CJN Kekere-Ekun Decries Corruption, Bias In Judiciary, Demands Urgent Reforms
The CJN stressed that these challenges not only weaken the judiciary’s authority but also erode public confidence, creating a dangerous disconnect between the courts and the society they serve.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has expressed deep concern over persistent allegations of corruption, judicial delays, and bias that continue to plague the country’s judiciary, despite ongoing reform efforts.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday while declaring open the 2025 hybrid refresher course for judges of superior courts, Kekere-Ekun highlighted the far-reaching consequences of these issues on public trust in the judicial system.
“In spite of our collective efforts, challenges persist; allegations of corruption, delays in the dispensation of justice, and perceptions of bias or inefficiency remain issues of concern,” she said.
The CJN stressed that these challenges not only weaken the judiciary’s authority but also erode public confidence, creating a dangerous disconnect between the courts and the society they serve. She called for decisive action to restore faith in the system.
“The onus is therefore on us to confront these challenges head-on and reaffirm our commitment to judicial excellence,” Kekere-Ekun urged.
She stated that the judiciary, as the final arbiter of disputes and custodian of constitutional order, does not operate in isolation. Instead, its legitimacy is tied to the trust and confidence reposed in it by the public.
“Without public confidence, the judiciary’s moral authority is diminished, and its ability to discharge its constitutional mandate is impaired,” she warned, adding that integrity, professionalism, and transparency are essential to rebuilding trust.
Reiterating the importance of judicial impartiality, the CJN cautioned that even the perception of bias or misconduct could be as damaging as the reality itself.
“It is not enough to be impartial; we must also be seen to be impartial,” she stated.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, retired Justice Salisu Abdullahi, has emphasized the importance of public trust in the judiciary, described it as the foundation of the institution’s legitimacy.
Speaking at a judicial refresher course themed "Strengthening Public Trust and Confidence in the Judiciary," Abdullahi noted that trust in the judiciary is not automatic but must be deliberately cultivated.
“Public confidence must be earned through conduct that exemplifies impartiality, integrity, and diligence,” he told the participants.
He explained that the course provides judges an opportunity to reflect on challenges that could erode trust in the judiciary and explore solutions to restore public confidence.
“This will ultimately help in identifying practical strategies to strengthen citizens' faith in the judicial system,” he added. The refresher course is part of the institute’s efforts to ensure the continuous professional development of judicial officers. https://saharareporters.com/2025/02/11/nigerian-cjn-kekere-ekun-decries-corruption-bias-judiciary-demands-urgent-reforms#google_vignette

Education › FG Seeks Reversal Of Mother Tongue Policy In Primary Schools by Morbeta11(op): 3:48pm On Feb 09, 2025 |
FG seeks reversal of mother tongue policy in primary schools
The Federal Government has urged the National Council on Education (NCE) stakeholders to approve the reversal of the use of mother tongue as the medium of instruction from Primary one to six.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, made the appeal at the 2025 Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
Ahmad also called on the council to approve the review of the national policy on education to restrict the use of mother tongue to Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECCDE) and primary one.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NCE had previously advocated for the use of the mother tongue of the immediate environment as the medium of instruction in the first three years of primary education.
This policy aimed to preserve Nigerian languages and enhance foundational learning.
However, the Federal Executive Council approved its implementation on November 30, 2022.
The minister of state highlighted several challenges hindering the implementation of the policy.
“Inconsistencies in policy execution, especially in urban areas and some parts of the country, impede implementation. We use English from the start, contradicting the policy.
"With over 500 languages in Nigeria, implementation becomes complex, making it difficult to select a dominant language in multilingual communities.
“Limited availability of instructional materials and textbooks, among other factors, hinders implementation,” she said.
She added that the ministry and NCE must initiate a policy review to implement the necessary changes.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, also advocated for integrating secondary education into basic education, extending it to 12 years.
Alausa said this initiative aligns with global best practices and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“Subsuming secondary education into basic education is necessary to improve access, retention, and completion.
“By making secondary education a part of basic education, students will benefit from uninterrupted learning up to the age of 16.
“This reform will also reduce dropout rates by eliminating financial and systemic barriers that currently prevent students from completing secondary education,” he said.
Alausa further explained the importance of converting the Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) into Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs).
According to him, technical education facilitates the acquisition of practical and applied skills, enabling young people to develop an intelligent understanding of the increasing complexity of technology.
“This transformation is not just a policy shift; it is a crucial step towards realigning our education system with the demands of an evolving economy and a technologically driven world.
“Another major issue facing the nation is youth unemployment. Nigeria’s youthful demographic has over 60 per cent of the population under the age of 30.
“In tackling this pressing issue, my administration introduced the TVET initiative, which aims to restructure and enhance technical and vocational education in Nigeria.
“This will align educational outcomes with industry demands,” he said.
Speaking on the incorporation of the 16-year minimum admission age policy for tertiary institutions into the NCE framework, the minister said this was necessary to standardise entry requirements for tertiary education.
The meeting brought together commissioners for education from the 36 states and the FCT, heads of agencies, international organisations, and the Deputy Governor of Kano state. https://guardian.ng/features/education/fg-seeks-reversal-of-mother-tongue-policy-in-primary-schools/#google_vignette

Trump disbands elite DOJ team tracing multibillion-dollar Sani Abacha loot for Nigeria
The newly appointed United States’ Attorney General Pam Bondi ‘quietly’ dismantled the team earlier this week following authorisation by Mr Trump.
U.S. President Donald Trump has disbanded the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, an elite Department of Justice (DOJ) team tasked with tracing the billions of dollars assets looted by Nigeria’s late military Head of State, Sani Abacha and other international corruption, Peoples Gazette reports.
A source close to the unit confirmed to The Gazette on Saturday that newly appointed United States’ Attorney General Pam Bondi ‘quietly’ dismantled the team earlier this week following authorisation by Mr Trump as his administration continues to wind down several government programs.
This decision to disband the team came as a surprise to many as the team was responsible for recoveries and prosecutions linked to billions of dollars in stolen assets, including the ongoing litigation involving some of Abacha’s loot traced to Atiku Bagudu, President Bola Tinubu’s budget minister.
This development could potentially make it difficult to find previously undiscovered Abacha cash stockpiles, which investigators still believe are out there — the
Kleptocracy initiative was specifically launched in 2010 to track down assets linked to international corruption.
The Gazette had yet to get a response after reaching out to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission spokesperson Dele Oyewale for comment. Also, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga didn’t respond to a request for comment.
It was unclear how the DOJ would proceed with the case already in U.S. courts, or whether it would continue to cooperate with parallel proceedings to trace and return Abacha loot in the United Kingdom and other jurisdictions.
Mr Trump’s administration said it would focus instead on dismantling narcotics and human trafficking networks. https://gazettengr.com/trump-disbands-elite-doj-team-tracing-multibillion-dollar-sani-abacha-loot-for-nigeria/

Adeyanju Petitions US, UK, Others To Impose Visa Ban On Nigerian Police PRO Adejobi, Family For Suppressing Free Speech
The petition alleges that Adejobi has consistently demonstrated a disregard for human rights, using his position to suppress dissent and target individuals critical of the government.
Deji Adeyanju & Partners, a public interest law firm, has petitioned the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union to impose a visa ban on Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, over alleged crackdowns on freedom of speech.
The petition alleges that Adejobi has consistently demonstrated a disregard for human rights, using his position to suppress dissent and target individuals critical of the government.
The law firm argues that his public statements and actions have contributed to an environment of intimidation against free expression in Nigeria.
A copy of the letter obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday was addressed to the US Ambassador in Abuja and dated February 4, 2025.
It reads, “We urgently appeal to the United States of America to impose a visa restriction on Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the current Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.
“ACP Adejobi's public statements and actions have demonstrated a blatant disregard for fundamental human rights, particularly freedom of speech. On multiple occasions, he has asserted that insulting police officers is a criminal offense in Nigeria, an assertion that legal experts and human rights advocates have widely condemned.
“For example, in a widely circulated tweet on March 29, 2023, ACP Adejobi stated that "hurling insults at Police Officers carrying out their legal duty is criminal and punishable by the criminal laws of Nigeria."
“This statement was made in response to a viral incident involving musician Habeeb Okikiola (Portable), in which Adejobi labeled his behavior as "unruly" and inciting violence against officers.
“Furthermore, he reiterated this stance in a Facebook post, declaring that attacking or even verbally insulting police officers is an act of disrespect to Nigeria itself.”
The petition also highlights the December 2024 arrest of activist and nurse Olamide Thomas, allegedly ordered by Adejobi, after she criticised President Bola Tinubu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Adejobi himself in a video.
“Her arrest and subsequent detention have been viewed as a direct attack on freedom of expression,” the law firm said.
Another case referenced is that of TikToker Destiny Ekhorutomwem, who was detained for cyberbullying and cyberstalking under Adejobi’s directives.
“He was given an impossible bail condition requiring four sureties with assets valued at N2 billion. While in custody, he collapsed and was rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja,” the firm said.
The petition further accuses Adejobi of ordering the arrest of Nigerian citizen Charles Uche Ihedioha over a Twitter comment.
It reads, “ Most recently, ACP Adejobi took his abuse of power a step further by ordering the arrest and detention of a Nigerian citizen over a Twitter comment. According to reports, Adejobi used his position to unlawfully detain Mr. Charles Uche Ihedioha simply for expressing an opinion online.
“This incident underscores his pattern of using state power to silence critics, violating both Nigerian laws and international human rights standards.
“When Mr. Daniel's father, Mr. Nathaniel Ihedioha went to the police station to see his son, ACP Adejobi ordered that the officers who granted him entry be locked up. This action further highlights Adejobi's power-drunk tendencies and his blatant abuse of authority.”
Additionally, it states that when the detainee’s father, Nathaniel Ihedioha, visited the police station to see his son, “ACP Adejobi ordered that the officers who granted him entry be locked up.”
Beyond these individual cases, the petition alleges that Adejobi has consistently defended police brutality.
“In a recent report, he justified excessive force used by officers and dismissed calls for accountability, further proving his complicity in the continued abuse of Nigerian citizens,” the firm said.
The law firm urges the US and other nations to take decisive action.
“We believe such action would send a strong message that individuals who suppress freedom of speech and undermine democratic principles will not be welcomed in the United States,” it said. https://saharareporters.com/2025/02/07/adeyanju-petitions-us-uk-others-impose-visa-ban-nigerian-police-pro-adejobi-family#google_vignette
