Politics › Rivers Emergency Rule: SSA Temitope Ajayi Faults Jonathan, Soyinka by Morbeta11(op): 5:42am On Mar 23, 2025 |
Rivers emergency rule: Presidency faults Jonathan, Soyinka for condemning Fubara, lawmakers’ suspension
Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka have spoken against the suspension of elected officers in Rivers State.
While Jonathan described the development as capable of bringing Nigeria into disrepute, Soyinka said it was against the spirit of federalism.
President Tinubu had, on March 18, declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing the breakdown of governance as a result of the war of attrition between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state lawmakers, as well as attacks on oil facilities in the state.
Tinubu also suspended Fubara; his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and members of the state House of Assembly.
He thereafter swore in a retired Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ette Ibas, as the state’s sole administrator.
The president relied on Section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to back his action.
Forty-eight hours after the declaration, the National Assembly approved the emergency rule in Rivers State, though some lawmakers expressed their opposition to it.
However, many stakeholders, including governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party, the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigeria Labour Congress, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and civil society organisations, have spoken against the emergency rule.
Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan condemned the suspension of democratic rule in Rivers State, saying he was disappointed that elected officials were removed.
“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” Jonathan, who was the chairman of the programme, said.
The former president maintained that the image and investment opportunities of the country heavily depended on the actions of the executive, legislature, and judiciary.
He blamed the three arms of government for their roles in the Rivers crisis, accusing them of engaging in abuse of power.
“The key actors in Nigeria from the executive to the legislature and the judiciary know the correct thing to do but they are refusing to do it; they are pretending to sleep, and waking such a person is extremely difficult because the person knows the right thing.
“A clear abuse of offices, clear abuse of power, clear abuse of privileges, cutting across the three arms of government — from the executive through the parliament and to the judiciary,” Jonathan said.
He noted that though it was not the norm for former presidents to comment on some issues so as not to heat up the polity, his comment was necessitated by persistent calls from many Nigerians for him to speak on the events in Rivers State as a prominent son of the Niger Delta.
The former president said it was difficult for anyone to have faith in the judiciary in a situation where an individual dictated what to do to the bench.
While presiding over the affairs of the country, Jonathan declared a state of emergency in three North-East states—Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa—in May 2013 due to the Boko Haram insurgency.
But democratic institutions in those states were not suspended.
On his part, Soyinka said the declaration was against the spirit of federalism.
The Nobel laureate, who spoke to an international news outlet, The Africa Report, maintained that the declaration of a state of emergency in the manner with which it was carried out betrayed federalism.
According to Soyinka, the 1999 constitution gives too much power to the president, saying there was the need for a national discussion on the matter.
He said, “If it is constitutionally right, then I think it is about time we sat down and amended the constitution to make sure that it operates as a genuine federal entity.
“The government is over-centralised. The debate will go on whether this (state of emergency) was, in the first place, a wise decision but in terms of fundamental principles, I believe that this is against the federal spirit of association.
“I find that the constitution has put too much power in the hands of the president. The system we are operating right now is not the best for a pluralistic society like ours. That is a fundamental principle I have always held.”
He stated that Nigeria must hold a national conference to change the country’s foundation, adding, “The federal spirit of association is a cardinal principle and, for that reason, some of us have called again and again for a national conference to really accord ourselves an authentic people’s constitution. Right now, in principle, this action is against the federal imperative.”
Reacting, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, said while Soyinka and Jonathan were respected statesmen, their opinions were personal.
He said, “Professor Wole Soyinka and former President Goodluck Jonathan are respected statesmen. Like many Nigerians that have offered varied opinions on the President’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, the two distinguished Nigerians have also offered their own opinions too.
“President Tinubu has a country to govern, and he has exercised his power under the 1999 Constitution as amended.
“President Tinubu has a duty to preserve the corporate existence of Nigeria. He won’t allow any part of the country or state to descend into chaos.
“The Supreme Court ruled that there is no functioning government in Rivers State known to the constitution of Nigeria. President Tinubu won’t fail in his sacred duty to protect and preserve the country.”
The co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, and other prominent human rights activists also demanded the reversal of the emergency rule.
They called for the reinstatement of Fubara and Odu, describing the president’s action as illegal and a violation of the constitution.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, the prominent activists, under the aegis of the Citizens and Civil Society Organisations, condemned the approval of the emergency rule by the National Assembly, saying they failed the people.
Yesufu, who addressed the media, expressed regret, warning that if the majority of Nigerians allowed the President and the National Assembly to get away with the emergency rule, it would set a bad precedent.
She said, “I am sure every Nigerian feels sadness at what is happening currently in our country. The democracy that we have today—a lot of people died for it. It is only fair that we safeguard our democracy and ensure that the rule of law remains sacrosanct and that processes are followed in everything being done.
“We have to understand that if we do not fix this polity and say it’s none of our business, the things happening in Nigeria today will continue to happen, where a few citizens who are supposedly elected into office to serve the people begin to serve only their self-interest.
“Fellow citizens, we must understand that under a democracy, the constitution is sacrosanct, and it must be followed to the letter. This is not the democracy that a lot of people fought for, and some died for us to have. This constitutional rascality has to stop.”
The Executive Director of FixPolitics, Anthony Ubani, who also spoke on behalf of 300 other coalitions, condemned the state of emergency.
According to him, it was not the idea of democracy every true Nigerian had dreamt about.
Ubani also vowed that there would be a series of litigation against the president’s actions in the coming days.
“We demand an immediate reversal of the unconstitutional removal of the governor, deputy governor, and House of Assembly members in Rivers State. The president does not have the power to arbitrarily dismiss elected state officials. His actions are dictatorial and illegal and must be resisted by all Nigerians.
“We call on members of the National Assembly who were not part of Thursday’s charade to speak up against the violation of the constitution. The National Assembly is the highest law-making body in the country, and they must not be allowed to get away with choosing which of Nigeria’s laws they want to obey.
“There will be several lawsuits in the coming days, and we require the judiciary to review each case on its merit and not rely on technicalities to dismiss the cases. History has shown that when unconstitutional acts like this go unchallenged, they become the norm. If Rivers is silenced today, no state is safe tomorrow,” he stated.
Rights groups mobilise
A rights group, Take-It-Back Movement, said it planned to stage a nationwide protest on April 7 against the emergency rule in Rivers State.
The National Coordinator of the group, Sanyaolu Juwon, who disclosed this to Sunday PUNCH, accused Tinubu’s administration of steering Nigeria toward authoritarian rule.
He noted that the President’s action in Rivers State, including the suspension of elected officials, was laying the foundation for military dictatorship.
“Our organisation has been at the forefront of resisting all anti-people policies of Tinubu, and we will keep doing that. We are planning a nationwide protest for April 7, targeted directly against Tinubu’s misgovernance and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
“We are going to use the protest to address the fact that Tinubu’s government is leading the country towards dictatorship, not just with the development in Rivers State and what he did in Lagos State, but how his regime has handled the entire country, silencing the voice of opposition,” he stated.
Similarly, the national spokesperson for the Youth Rights Campaign and representative of the #EndBadGovernance protest, Hassan Taiwo, strongly criticised Tinubu’s emergency rule, describing it as an attack on democracy.
Also, the Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Auwal Musa, expressed concerns over the emergency rule, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to defending the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
Also, the Democratic Socialist Movement, expressed support for a mass action against the emergency rule.
The National Secretary of the DSM, Peluola Adewale, called on the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to lead the protest against ‘sabotaging democratic rights of the people of Rivers State.’
He said, “They should also mobilise for mass action to condemn the unconstitutional pronouncement by President Tinubu and the approval by the National Assembly.
“All civil society organisations should come together to organise action to defend democracy. Fubara was a product of the overbearing character of Nyesom Wike.
“One person can’t take away the rights of the people of Rivers State. This is like a coup on the people of the state. We condemn this. We support every action to defend democratic rights.”
Adewale also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to join in the mass action to protest against sabotaging democratic rights of the people.
He said, “All civil society organisations should come together to organise action to defend democracy. One person can’t take away the rights of the people of Rivers State. This is like a coup on the people of the state. We condemn this. N1.361bn contract fraud allegation rocks Edo Urban Water Corporation, staff petition
There is tension at the Edo State Urban Water Corporation, following a petition against the Acting Managing Director, Mrs Toyin Rose Adeboyega over an alleged N1.361 billion contract fraud.
DAILY POST reports that Mr Christopher Abhulimen, a staff of the corporation, wrote the petition against the Managing Director to the Edo State Government.
The petition addressed to the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo was dated February 6, 2025.
The petition is titled, ‘Concerning instances of misappropriation of funds, mismanagement of public funds, poorly executed contracts/fictitious contract projects facilitated by the previous administration with the abetment and instrumentality of the Acting Managing Director of Edo State Urban Water Corporation, Mrs Toyin Rose Adeboyega’.
Abhulimen, who listed about eight projects allegedly involved in the fraud, noted that not only did some of the aforementioned projects not exist in reality, but even for the few that exist, there is nothing in them to justify the astronomical funding commitments.
He appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to take all necessary actions to ensure thorough investigations of the projects as well as the complicity of the Acting Managing Director, and/or any other person(s) in the facilitation of alleged unwarranted hemorrhage of public funds.
In the petition, Abhulimen, listed the projects and their cost to include N700 million pipeline network reticulation to Ugboha, Uromi and environs, N23 million funding of Abico Pumping Station, and N120 million provision of potable water to Emotan Garden Estate.
Others are N150 million reactivation of water schemes at Etsako and Akoko-Edo, N150 million supply of pipes and accessories to Ugboha/Uromi Water Scheme, N15 million for supply of chemicals, N160 million for the management of Ugboha Dam and N43 million of illegal sales/disposal of exhumed ductile pipe in the course of road construction at Iruekpen and environs.
When contacted, the Acting Managing Director of the Corporation, Mrs Toyin Rose Adeboyega, said a journalist has already written a rejoinder on the petition.
Adeboyega, who forwarded the alleged rejoinder to DAILY POST, denied the allegations levelled against her.
The alleged rejoinder written by Comrade Robinson Akhenoba, titled, ‘Allegation against Mrs Toyin Rose Adeboyega’, alleged that after conducting a thorough investigation in the said ministry, it was found that “these allegations are not only misleading but also a gross misrepresentation of facts”.
Akhenoba, while urging the governor to take time to investigate the allegations as contained in the petition, advised him to remain vigilant and not succumb to the alleged manipulative tactics of those who seek to divide and rule.
According to him, these individuals often rely on misinformation and speculation to achieve their goals, which can lead to unfair treatment of dedicated public servants.
“I implore you to prioritize facts and figures when evaluating these allegations, rather than getting swayed by baseless claims. As findings have shown, Mrs Adeboyega possesses a high level of integrity and a strong commitment to her role. It’s crucial for you to recognize and appreciate her efforts in serving the people
“By focusing on verifiable evidence and ignoring malicious rumors, you can ensure that justice is served,” he added. https://dailypost.ng/2025/03/19/n1-361bn-contract-fraud-allegation-rocks-edo-urban-water-corporation-staff-petition-okpebholo/

Canada’s deportations rise by 8.4%, reaching highest levels since 2015
Canada has seen a sharp rise in deportations, reaching the highest number since 2015. Nearly 7,300 people were removed from the country by November 19th, 2024, marking an 8.4% increase compared to the previous year.
This surge comes as the Canadian government works to address a growing backlog of refugee claims and a rising number of foreign nationals awaiting removal.
As cited by Immigration News Canada (INC), data obtained by Reuters, 7,300 individuals were deported from Canada between January and November 2024.
This, according to reports, represents an increase from 2023 and a notable jump from 2022, with a 95% rise in removals compared to two years ago.
Canada Border Services Agency is yet to release full-year statistics, but the trend suggests higher deportation numbers by year-end.
As of December 2024, 485,359 individuals were flagged for potential removal, including 120,273 in Ontario, 197,029 in Quebec, and 123,000 unassigned to a specific region.
The majority of deportations, around 79%, were directed at failed refugee claimants. This marks an increase from 75% in 2023 and 66% in 2022, indicating a shift in enforcement priorities.
Other individuals were deported for overstaying visas or violating terms of stay (11%), or due to criminal convictions (7%). https://guardian.ng/news/canadas-deportations-rise-by-8-4-reaching-highest-levels-since-2015/

EFCC arraigns ex-works ministry director, surveyor over N1.9bn fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday, arraigned a former Deputy Director, Highways, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, Augustine Olowoniyan, alongside a surveyor, Sulaiman Muhammed of the Department of Highways and Planning before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Apo, Abuja.
They were arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on alleged diversion and misappropriation of public funds amounting to N1,936,961,649.00.
A statement by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the alleged offence is contrary to Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
He said the funds were reportedly earmarked for the acquisition of titles for federal roads nationwide between March 4, 2019, and July 17, 2020, but were allegedly converted to their personal use.
One of the counts in the charge reads: “That you, Augustine Ojo Olowoniyan, whilst serving as Deputy Director Highways, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, and Project Coordinator for the acquisition of titles for Federal Roads, and Suleiman Abdulkadir Muhammed, whilst serving as Surveyor of the Department of Highways and Planning, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, between March 4, 2019, and October 21, 2019, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, used your office to confer corrupt advantage upon yourselves by putting to your own use the sum of N807,053,000.00 despite being funds budgeted for the acquisition of titles for Federal Roads Nationwide, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.”
Oyewale said the defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
“Following their plea, the prosecution counsel, Abba Muhammed, SAN, requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendants in the Correctional Centre. However, counsel to the first and second defendants, J.K. Kolawole and A.S.U. Garba, applied for a short adjournment to enable them to file for bail applications and requested that the defendants be remanded in the EFCC’s custody,” Oyewale said.
He added that Justice Onwuegbuzie adjourned the matter till April 3, 2025 for the hearing of the bail application and remanded the two defendants at Kuje Correctional Centre.
In a related development, Oyewale also said the EFCC also arraigned the first defendant, Augustine Ojo Olowoniyan, on a separate three-count charge before the same Judge for allegedly diverting public funds amounting to N439,502,200.00 to personal use.
One of the charges reads: “That you, Augustine Ojo Olowoniyan, whilst serving as Deputy Director Highways, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and Project Coordinator for the acquisition of titles for Federal Roads, and in such capacity entrusted with public funds, between March 27, 2019, and December 17, 2019, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, transferred the cumulative sum of Three Hundred and One Million, Nine Hundred and Ninety-Four Thousand, Two Hundred Naira (N301,994,200.00) to Chile Ushahemba (a staff of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing) and received in cash the sum of Nineteen Million, One Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira (N19,140,000.00), which you converted to your use, thereby committing a criminal breach of trust contrary to and punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code Law.”
The defendant also pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Justice Onwuegbuzie adjourned the matter to the same date, April 3, 2025, for the hearing of the bail application. https://punchng.com/efcc-arraigns-ex-works-ministry-director-surveyor-over-n1-9bn-fraud/

Politics › Appoint Export Adviser, Ex-finance Minister Adeosun Urges Tinubu by Morbeta11(op): 5:52am On Mar 20, 2025 |
Appoint export adviser, ex-finance minister Adeosun urges Tinubu
Former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint a National Export Adviser to drive reforms and boost Nigeria’s export sector.
Adeosun made the call during her keynote address at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank’s International Women’s Day Conference Day 2025, themed “For All Women: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”, held in Abuja on Tuesday.
She noted that Nigeria’s export-to-GDP ratio stood at 9.2 per cent, compared to other African countries, adding that Nigeria did not need to reduce its imports into the country, but rather increase its exports.
She said, “I go so far as to call the President, to name a National Export Adviser. We need a figurehead that will drive reforms and break down all barriers to exports so that our world-class goods can get to the global market.
“There’s been a lot of narrative around Nigeria. The narrative used to be Nigeria imports too much, but that is not true. The statistics do not support that at all. The statistics do say that Nigeria exports too little. So, if you look at Nigeria’s export-to-GDP ratio, it is 9.2%. That was the last statistic, that was before the rebasement.
“So, when the rebasement seeds are in, that signal will go down. Nigeria’s export-to-GDP, please remember these numbers, 9.2%, Ghana 34%, South Africa 32.8%, Senegal 23%. So, what we are saying is, not so much efforts on reducing our imports, we need to focus on increasing our exports.”
Adeosun also noted that while it took weeks to register as an exporter in Nigeria, it took only 48 hours to register in South Africa, adding that Nigeria must be intentional about export opportunities.
“By our last recording, there are about four steps to register as an exporter in Nigeria. Takes an average of two to three weeks, in South Africa, it takes 48 hours. So, if it takes long for me to go through various clearances, the chances are I will give up. So, we need to be intentional about the opportunity. And the opportunity for the ladies is in exports.
“It is not in imports, it’s in exports. Your products are world-class. Your products can compete anywhere in the world. And if you look at the trajectory, Nollywood is now growing, our music is growing. What should follow, our fashion, our arts, our crafts, our snacks, our foods, that’s the next wave,” she stated.
In his address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEXIM Bank, Abubakar Bello, said the occasion was to display the Bank’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and emphasising women’s achievements, challenges, and to foster dialogue, share insights and promote actional strategies for women empowerment.
He noted that the bank had developed several products targeting women, including the Women and Youth Export Fund, the Small and Medium Enterprises Export Fund and the Women in Oil and Gas Managed Funds, while also announcing the launch of The Women In Export Development Fund.
He added, “Women and girls are at the heart of national development. When we empower women, we empower families, communities, and entire economies. Nigeria, with its vast human and material resources, can only achieve sustainable development when women are included in all aspects of economic growth, particularly in financial empowerment and entrepreneurship.”
“As we mark this occasion, we commit to further deepen our interventions to increase the participation of women in the non-oil export sector. It is in this regard that we present another flagship product: ‘The Women In Export Development Fund’.” https://punchng.com/appoint-export-adviser-ex-finance-minister-adeosun-urges-tinubu/#google_vignette

Soldiers hold Fubara, family hostage at Rivers governor’s residence
Attempts by Mr Fubara and his family to pack their belongings out of the Government House have been rebuffed by the soldiers, who suppressed all movements around the premises.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his family members are being held hostage at the Government House, Port-Harcourt, by a contingent of heavily armed soldiers Tuesday night, Peoples Gazette has learnt.
The development comes moments after President Bola Tinubu invoked Section 180 of the Nigerian Constitution to proclaim a state of emergency in Rivers. The Nigerian leader based his controversial move on a prolonged and rapidly escalating political feud led by state lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, who commenced impeachment proceedings against Mr Fubara last week to settle scores in his fallout with Mr Wike, who engineered Mr Fubara’s election in 2023 despite corruption charges.
Rivers government sources told The Gazette that soldiers carrying out the president’s instructions on declaring the state of emergency barricaded all entrances and exits to the government house immediately after the president’s speech.
Attempts by Mr Fubara and his family to pack their belongings out of the Government House have been rebuffed by the soldiers, who suppressed all movements around the premises.
“We are being held hostage,” an affected official told The Gazette from the scene on Tuesday night. “They said they don’t have instruction to let anyone leave the premises.”
It was unclear whether the soldiers implemented their duties as instructed or were overzealous in following specific orders.
Spokespersons for the Nigerian Army and Defence Headquarters did not immediately return requests seeking comments about the soldiers’ treatment of the Fubaras.
Mr Tinubu’s declaration to suspend the feuding parties from office for six months, effective Tuesday, sparked furious debates across social media as netizens argued whether the president had constitutional grounds to suspend an elected governor whom the state lawmakers have not yet impeached. Efforts to impeach Mr Fubara began on Monday, barely 24 hours before Mr Tinubu imposed an emergency ordinance.
Lawyers like Inibehe Effiong and Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana have excoriated the president for taking the law into his own hands without regard for the Constitution’s position.
The president named the retired chief of naval staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as the military administrator in Rivers in the interim. https://gazettengr.com/just-in-soldiers-hold-fubara-family-hostage-at-rivers-governors-residence/

Politics › Re: The Balewa Road Tinubu Is Travelling, By Festus Adedayo by Morbeta11(op): 5:01pm On Mar 17, 2025 |
What many don’t know is that Tinubu is an arch-monarchist who pulls a blanket on his pre-modernist persuasions. This he does by mouthing democratic rhetoric. In June, 2024, at the commissioning of the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Expressway in Abuja, a hyper-elated Tinubu described the appointment of Wike as one of the best he ever made. To me, this is a poor reading of persona by the president. Yoruba will condemn anyone as lacking ability of thorough examination if they rejoice at a ripening plantain/banana rather than being sad that it is beginning the process of rotting (Ògèdè nbàjé è l’o npon). Among my people, if you own the whole world but lack character, what they call Iwa, you have nothing. Ask a professor friend of mine to describe a man of tremendous achievements and brilliance who lacks character, he would say, “he is this, he is that. Full Stop!” He meant the person had nothing.
A few days after the PANDEF meeting with Tinubu, Nyesom Wike held the Ministerial Press briefing. As usual, his choleric persona was on display. Whenever he flies into a fit, you would think Wike would burst an artery the next minute. At the meeting, Wike’s venom sprinkled everywhere. The Ijaw got theirs. PDP got its and everyone but Wike was a fool.
On threats that Ijaw would blow up pipelines if Fubara was impeached, Wike’s loose temper found no anchor. “Who told you Ikwerre people cannot blow up pipeline? Who told you Ekpeye people cannot blow up pipelines?… Let the whole country be blown up!” And when asked what happens if Fubara is impeached, he bellowed in that infamous guttural of his, “Rubbish. Nonsense. Who is he? Nonsense!”
In the Rivers imbroglio, Wike clearly nurtures a Samson complex. It is also called nihilism, the type Adolf Hitler harbored. It was what Bob Marley insinuated when, in his ‘Real Situation’ track, he sang, “total destruction, only solution.” It is what the Yoruba descriptively call the “Atare o gbóná t’ohun t’epo” mentality (rather than the rat suffering the denial of eating from the farmer’s field of cowpea seeds, let the cowpea farm be scattered so that, neither the rat, nor the farmer has the peas). Since his bile went riot at the temerity of his godson, Fubara, to possess a mind of his own, Wike has trodden this “Atare o gbóná t’ohun t’epo” route. He doesn’t care if Rivers people die of hunger.
At Tinubu’s meeting with PANDEF, when the president said he was a friend of the rule of law, he got cacophonous guffaws across Nigeria. Really? See who is talking about the rule of law! Tinubu’s recent and past political history disown this self chest-thump. For 25 years, Tinubu has sustained his iron grips on Lagos State with a combination of cultic abidance, deadly hold and rule of brunt, all garnished with heavy dole-outs of cash to buy loyalty. At best, as I said earlier, Tinubu is a staunch monarchist, a student of the Bashorun Gaa school of power. This was aptly demonstrated in his successive enthronement of governors since he left office in 2007. While the world sees democracy and continuity, underneath the surface is dirty grime. While Akinwumi Ambode got a premature rout from office for querying the godfather’s pokenose into Lagos till, Raji Fashola escaped by the whiskers. Today, Jide Sanwo-Olu is on the cross for being a man of his own and daring to flex a power muscle which only the godfather has a patent to. Why should he remove a haughty, self-conceited Mudashiru Obasa without the godfather’s say-so? Nigerians recently saw the true colour of the president’s bedfellow dalliance with the rule of law in the gangsteric takeover of the Lagos House of Assembly which he unpretentiously sponsored. Same last week, the president exhibited his conquest of this “rule of law” when he hoisted Obasa and the entire House on the cross of Aso Rock. What a victory of the rule of law!
Last week, Nigerians also saw another victory of Tinubu’s rule of law. This time around, it was in the courts. Peter Odili, the ‘enemy’ of Wike, had his judicial envelope from prosecution removed by the Supreme Court. This was coming after 18 years, and coincidentally, at a time when the former governor had become vociferous in denunciation of Wike. Same last week, the insttallation of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano was removed by the Appeal Court. The world is aware that Tinubu and his APC surrogates had quartered Aminu Ado Bayero, the dethroned monarch, as alternate Emir in an ancient mini-palace in Nassarawa. Sanusi must be taught the lesson of his life for being friend to Nasir El-Rufai who is threatening the president’s lifetime ambition and family inheritance. Rule of law however prevailed last week and the court took judicial notice of the president’s heartfelt political yearnings. May Allah be praised.
A godfather of huge credentials, it will be expecting the impossible to imagine that Tinubu would not support a fellow godfather, his FCT minister, Nyesom Wike. Though Tinubu advertises boldness, it is apparent that he cannot stand the gruff and incandescent temper of Nyesom Wike. It will seem that he does not have the balls, too to peer torchlight into the dilating eyes of this leopard, the animal which inflicts lethal marks on any animal in the jungle (Ògìdán olólà ijù). I remember that immediately after Chief David Briggs lifted the veil on the meeting with Tinubu in 2023, I said, if Tinubu had acted like a statesman and not an APC leader and godfather, Rivers State would not be the smoking cauldron that it is today. I asked if Tinubu had ever called Wike to his office to tell him the simple truth. I doubt. The truth is, Wike’s totalitarian approach to power and his violent disposition can only flourish with a godfather of similar captive persuasion as Tinubu. The day Wike is told by a superior force like the president that no one can hold on to power ad-infinitum and single-handedly hold the polity to ransom like this, is the day the good people of Rivers would be rid of their Wike-inflicted conundrum.
Tinubu’s self-imposed deafness to the warnings of history in how he fiddles with fire in abeting Wike reminds me of a similar equation in Nigeria’s First Republic. The Western Region turmoil began like a minor crisis as this. Like an unperturbed Balewa, Tinubu is not bothered that, manipulating judicial instrumentality, Rivers State is today literally frozen. A contumacious legislature, whose strings are being pulled by Wike, has adjourned the House sine die to prevent the presentation of the 2025 budget. The people could starve for all they and Wike care. As Tinubu is backing Wike, Balewa was Chief S. L. Akintola’s backer, too in a political chess game that was to later consume the duo.
While on a tour of Benin in June, 1964, still feigning ignorance of the crisis, Balewa was quoted to have said that he could not judge the intensity of lawlessness in the West on account of newspaper report of the brigandage. As he departed Nigeria in October 1965 for Accra to attend an OAU meeting, he was quoted to have said that report of violence in the region was contrived. At the Ikeja Airport, he was asked by journalists what he was going to do about the fire raging in Western Nigeria. He tucked his bother inside his flowing babanriga, looked round and cynically declared; “Ikeja is part of the West and I cannot see any fire burning.” Like Balewa, today, all Tinubu sees are the magnificent edifices Wike builds in Abuja and the arresting asphalt he paints Abuja roads with. He cannot see that Rivers is burning and hurting.
man still stand strong”. He deplored his unfair treatment by the system when he sang, “They say I don’t have no right Inna Babylon… Because I don’t know how the west was won…Neither I can’t change the plan…The west is controlled by the cool class clan…” He then asked what would happen when “Jah Jah calls onto me”?

The Balewa road Tinubu is travelling, By Festus Adedayo
An ancient Yoruba anecdote narrates the destructive nature of the tongue. Its moral is specifically targeted at leaders who take unconscionable decisions as dictated by their fleeting passion. It is the tragic life and reign of King Odarawu. Odarawu was an Alaafin in the old Oyo Empire. His brief reign in the late seventeenth century, after he succeeded his father, Aláàfin Ajagbo, made him the first Alaafin to be rejected by the Oyomesi, Oyo Empire’s council of state. Odarawu was a prisoner of his tongue and fiery temper. These led to the brevity of his rule. His vile anger and the calamity it wrought became almost a totem which the Empire deployed to teach lessons of leadership; that leaders must exhibit precis in tongues and tame impassioned words.
The Reverend Samuel Johnson told the Odarawu story in his authoritative Yoruba nation biography, The History of the Yorubas, (p 169). As was the custom, at his installation, Odarawu was asked to name his enemy. Without mincing words, the Prince named Ojo Segi, a town in the kingdom. On what provoked the enmity, Odarawu went down memory lane. Years back, the Prince had gone to buy corn meal (eko) for dinner. Unbeknown to him, the woman who sold the eko was the Baale’s wife. The price of a wrap of eko was then a cowry and Odarawu bought six. He however paid five cowries, according to the privilege of his birth. The Baale’s wife, feeling insulted and not aware of his princely status, decked Odarawu’s face with a dirty slap. She then repeatedly shouted “thief!” at him for trying to withhold a cowry off her legitimate earning. As he was being installed Alaafin, Odarawu asked the council for one favour: the destruction of Ojo Segi. Though the Oyomesi acceded to his request and brought the town to ruins, the council agreed to do away with Odarawu. In their estimation, the new king was a heartless tyrant. If, out of malice against a single woman, he could have macabre pleasure in the destruction of a hapless people, he was not worthy of the kingdom. Oyo people thereafter rejected Odarawu and, in frustration, he committed suicide.
In today’s Nigeria, one character who personifies Aláàfin Odarawu is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. Last week, at a temper session in Abuja he called Ministerial Briefing, in fit-like burst of anger, like King Odarawu, Wike named his enemies. They ranged from Siminilayi Fubara, Bayelsa State governor, Duoye Diri, and the like. Wike’s persona needs critical dissection by psychologists, political scientists and psychoanalysts. Since he left office as Rivers State governor, Wike has been the butt of jokes for his reversibility and torrid anger. Even President Bola Tinubu, last year, acknowledged his “mercurial” disposition. Aside his fitful anger, Wike possesses this weird knack for reversing himself at the drop of a hat. His impassioned statements and emotions get reversed the way an old Bedford lorry needlessly backtracks. Wike speaks in the superlatives. From his absolutist comments on persons in the past, he suffers reverses that show him as little-minded. Peter Odili, Rotimi Amaechi, Diri, Fubara, the PDP, APC and even Bola Tinubu, can point to carcasses of Wike’s reversibility.
Ancient wisdom teaches that, at critical moments, leaders need to exhibit self-restraint and forbearance. Wike suffers anaemic deficiency of those virtues. He is grossly mouth-loose and his temper is his most destructive possession. The mouth, as harmless as it may seem, is a tinder, a combustible weapon. Yoruba compare the incandescence of the tongue to an alligator pepper (ataare) which they say burns even its own outer seed covering (ataare o gbona t’ohun t’epo). Wise leaders use it sparingly. The moment the mouth is set a-loose, its destructive effect is unimaginable. In the Ifa corpus, Èṣù Odára, being the most gluttonous of the Irúnmolè, (deities) reputed with the task of ferrying human appeasements from earth to heaven, is most times depicted with the vice of a lose mouth.
Before or about the time of the Latin discovery of the maxims of equity and justice, as profoundly explored in the sayings, audi alteram partem (let the other side be heard) and nemo judex in causa sua, (no one should be a judge of their own case) the Yoruba had discovered justice as bedrock of their society. Just like in many societies of the world, the concept of justice in Yoruba indigenous jurisprudential thoughts is robust. Through a prescriptive exploration of proverbs, aphorisms, lore and mores, Yoruba’s thoughts on justice guide rulers and society on the path of virtue, peace and progress. In his “Awon Oju Odu Mereerindinlogun” (The 16 Divination Poems: 2014) an exploration of the Ifa corpus, Professor Wande Abimbola cited one of the Ifa verses which says, “a one-sided judgment arrived at on the basis of a party’s evidence is inhuman and wicked; why did you judge without recourse to the other party?” ([A]nikandajo, o o seun; Anikandajo, o o seeyan; Nigba ti o o gbo t’enu enikeji, emi l’o dajo se?).
To the Yoruba, the unjust ruler is wickedness personified. He works against the principle of justice which demands impartiality, thereby inflicting gross wickedness on the people. Also implicit in this is that, the one judging in a matter should not be a party to the dispute.
Last week, the Rivers State imbroglio took another dimension. At a meeting he held at State House, Abuja with representatives and leaders of the Niger Delta, under the umbrella of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), President Tinubu went on a self voyage. Not only did he name himself Nostradamus for seeing tomorrow of Rivers politics, he conferred ancient African elders’ foresight on himself, which, I will argue presently, is misplaced. The president took his guests on a sanctimonious sermon of strict adherence to the rule of law and admonished that judiciary was crucial to harmony. He then urged Fubara to “stoop to conquer.”
In December, 2023, President Tinubu held a similar conclave session of sanctimony with Fubara and Rivers stakeholders. While the world wondered what transpired at the meeting, former Rivers State Commissioner, Chief David Briggs, lifted the veil. According to him, Tinubu had boasted, “I’m the leader of the APC in Nigeria. And you are telling me when babies are born into my family, I should ask them to go!” Tinubu thereafter dictatorially got the parties, including Fubara, to sign a pre-written agreement, literally holding the holster of a corked Barreta pistol to Fubara’s head. In the words of Briggs, “He (Tinubu) emphasized the fact that he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and anybody who tends to say no to what he is saying, it has consequences.”

wiseone28: Return the Eiffel tower too The Eiffel Tower was not "given" to France by anyone in the traditional sense. It was designed and constructed by Gustave Eiffel, a French civil engineer and architect, through his company, Eiffel & Cie. The tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Gustave Eiffel spearheaded the project, and its construction took place between 1887 and 1889. So, in essence, it was Gustave Eiffel and his team who "gave" France the Eiffel Tower by designing and building it as a symbol of French engineering prowess and national pride |

Lagos Council Chairman Animashaun Accused Of Plagiarising Ex-Gov Fashola’s 2015 Address To Respond To Financial Misconduct Allegations
They further asked the chairman to immediately hire a competent spokesperson capable of handling public communications professionally.
A group of professionals in the Epe community in Lagos State, has accused the Local Government Chairman, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, of plagiarism, demanding a public apology within 72 hours or she will face legal action.
The allegations centred around the chairman’s recent press statement, which the group claims was copied verbatim from a 2015 address by former Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.
In an open letter signed by Fatai A. Adebanjo and Dr. Femi Olulaja on behalf of Epe Young Professionals, the group expressed outrage over what they described as an “intellectually reprehensible” act.
According to them, the chairman’s response to allegations of financial misconduct and other controversies was nothing more than an unoriginal, copied document with only minor modifications to fit the circumstances.
“This is not just a failure of leadership; it is a public disgrace of the highest order,” the letter stated.
The letter added, “A leader who cannot articulate her own thoughts in the face of allegations but instead steals another’s words is not just unfit for office but a danger to the credibility of the institution she represents.”
The group questioned whether the chairman lacked a capable media team to craft an original response and criticised her aides for failing to prevent such an embarrassment.
They further warned that if an apology was not issued within the stipulated time, they would initiate legal proceedings to hold the chairman accountable.
“As if the allegations of financial misconduct, embezzlement, criminal breach of trust, contract inflation, and certificate forgery were not bad enough, you have now added intellectual fraud to the growing list of controversies surrounding your administration,” the letter read.
The professionals emphasised that their demand for an apology was not an act of intimidation but a necessary step toward restoring public trust.
They further asked the chairman to immediately hire a competent spokesperson capable of handling public communications professionally.
“This matter will not be swept under the carpet. If you refuse to take responsibility, you must be prepared for the most rigorous legal and intellectual challenge,” they warned.
To further demonstrate their commitment, the group revealed that they had engaged a reputable law firm to act on their behalf if the chairman failed to meet their demand within the deadline.
“The time for accountability is now. Epe deserves better. We will not stand by and watch our community descend into intellectual and administrative mediocrity,” the letter concluded.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the chairman’s office regarding the allegations. https://saharareporters.com/2025/03/15/lagos-council-chairman-animashaun-accused-plagiarising-ex-gov-fasholas-2015-address#google_vignette

I’m pained we supported Tinubu despite his cocaine, certificate forgery scandals: El-Rufai
Mr El-Rufai said, “We all know about his issues in Chicago.’’
A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said he is pained about President Bola Tinubu’s failure because he and others supported his presidential bid despite knowing about his cocaine and certificate forgery scandals.
Mr El-Rufai, in an interview with the BBC Hausa, said he supported Mr Tinubu despite knowing his sordid past because he wanted him to replicate what he did in Lagos State as governor in Nigeria.
“What pains me is that the government we supported and had confidence in would do well, because we saw what Tinubu did in Lagos despite his challenges,” Mr El-Rufai said in the interview published on Saturday.
Making reference to Mr Tinubu’s involvement in cocaine trafficking and certificate forgery, Mr El-Rufai said, “We all know about his issues in Chicago, but we thought if he could replicate his work in Lagos for Nigeria, let’s support him. However, he failed.”
Mr Tinubu’s involvement in drug trafficking scandal that saw him forfeited $460,000 to the U.S. government in 1993 re-emerged shortly after he declared interest to contest presidency in 2022.
In 2022, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois released fresh documents showing Mr Tinubu’s encounter with the U.S. authorities over allegations of narcotics trafficking and money laundering.
Similarly, Mr Tinubu’s Chicago State University certificate forgery scandal made the rounds as opposition candidate Atiku Abubakar, approached the court to compel CSU to release Mr Tinubu’s academic record. https://gazettengr.com/im-pained-we-supported-tinubu-despite-his-cocaine-certificate-forgery-scandals-el-rufai/

Lagos Woman Uses Police To Detain Husband For Allegedly Taking Second Wife
SaharaReporters learned that Charles and Uche have been married for 20 years, but trouble started when Charles reportedly had a child with another woman eight years ago.
ALagos resident, Charles Chiawa, has been detained at the Ejigbo Police Station on the orders of his wife, Uche Chiawa, for allegedly taking a second wife.
Charles maintained that he had the right to take another wife since his marriage to Uche was conducted under traditional customs.
However, Uche argues that their union was not only a traditional marriage but was also registered as a court marriage, giving her legal grounds to take action against her husband.
"I also did court, not only traditional marriage. I used police to arrest him because he always beats me," Uche told SaharaReporters on Friday morning.
A source familiar with the matter described what appeared to be a blatant abuse of police power, allegedly facilitated by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ejigbo Police Station, CSP Patience Osuagwu.
"Charles was detained at Ejigbo police station by his first wife on the allegation that he married another wife," the source said.
"I was told the first wife has connections with the woman DPO at Ejigbo, and she wants her husband to suffer inside the cell."
According to the source, efforts were made to secure Charles' release, but Uche reportedly blocked every attempt.
"I reached out to the DPO, who said she would transfer the case to the gender department. I told her the man should be granted bail since it is a bailable offence. She agreed and said someone should come forward to secure his release.
"I told the second wife to go. When she got to the station, she met the first wife, who insisted that the man shouldn't be released because he needed to suffer. Imagine the authority!
"I called the DPO again to ask if she was aware that the second wife was there to bail her husband, but the first wife insisted he shouldn't be released. The DPO said, 'That does not concern me.'
"I told the second wife to go again and not go alone this time, but they sent them out like dogs."
When contacted, the second wife also corroborated the alleged abuse of power by the police in the matter.
“My husband was arrested around 2pm yesterday (Thursday) when he went to visit the first wife and he called me. I went to the police station to bail him but the first wife kept saying they should not release him. That he wants him to suffer inside the cell.
“This is almost 24 hours now after his arrest by the police for what appeared to be family matters and they are not willing to allow us bail him,” the second wife added.
When asked about the allegation made to SaharaReporters by the first wife that Charles beats her, she denied it, stating that her co-wife did not mention anything like that at the police station.
“She did not raise any issue of beating at the station. She just brought it up when you called her,” she said.
When SaharaReporters contacted CSP Patience Osuagwu for her response, she was dismissive.
"If that is the story they told you that led to his arrest, if you like, you can believe it, but I will not explain what happened to you on the phone unless you come to our station," she said.
When told that visiting the station might not be possible, she bluntly replied, "Then I am too busy to tell you what happened." https://saharareporters.com/2025/03/14/lagos-woman-uses-police-detain-husband-allegedly-taking-second-wife

Prominent Rivers Monarch Rejects Wike’s Thanksgiving Service In His Domain, Cites Political Tension
In a letter to the state police commissioner, dated March 12, 2025, the monarch expressed shock at just learning about the event on Facebook despite being the paramount ruler of Abalama.
The Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, has rejected a planned Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in honour of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, citing political tension and security concerns.
In a letter to the state police commissioner, dated March 12, 2025, the monarch expressed shock at just learning about the event on Facebook despite being the paramount ruler of Abalama.
He recalled that in February 2025, Dr. D. A. Kelly, a known ally of Wike, had visited him with a letter dated January 17, 2025, notifying him of a personal thanksgiving service.
However, he later realised that the event was something entirely different.
He wrote: “I, HRH King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, Amayanabo VIII of Abalama community, on behalf of the council of chiefs and members of Abalama write to inform you of the present state of affairs in Abalama.
“In view of the above subject matter I became aware of the upcoming event that will take place in my own community via Facebook on the 12th day of March, 2025, where I am the paramount head and custodian of the people of Abalama which I think is a slap on my face.
“To my greatest surprise and without my knowledge and consent information is all over on social media, radio and television, concerning the event.
“Sometime in February 2025 I had a courtesy visit from the personal assistant and one other person who visited me in my palace and gave me a letter dated 17th January, 2025 captioned "Notification of my upcoming thanksgiving service" written by Dr. D. A Kelly, FNIQS and I acknowledged the letter waiting for his response till date.
“In that letter, he specifically stated the event was for his personal thanksgiving service with respect to the appointment given to him by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. While the recent political issues in the state were beginning to raise alarm, I drew his attention via a text message after I gave him several calls without response to the fact that the Thanksgiving service event be put on hold since the date is not yet fixed considering the political tension in the state and security of my people.”
The monarch made it clear that the community had already decided against any political gathering due to the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, saying, “I and my council of chiefs also resolved that no political activity should be held in Abalama because of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and I made a radio announcement to that effect.”
Expressing his frustration over the lack of communication from Kelly, who now serves as the Director-General of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), the monarch said the announcement noted: "Why I’m sending you this message is because I called you and your PA severally in order to inform you of the latest development but no response. I'm very conscious of insecurity because of my old age & for the safety of my people.”
Declaring Abalama a non-partisan community, the king stated, "I and my people disassociate ourselves from the said event because we are not aware of the recent update. I think I was deceived with the letter I received earlier from Dr. D. A. Kelly, FNIQS, not knowing it was a different event that is upcoming."
He urged the Commissioner of Police to take immediate action, warning that the organisers had no right to proceed without his approval.
"Abalama is an autonomous Community with a King and nobody has the right to organize such an event without my knowledge and the consent of my council of chiefs," he emphasised.
The monarch concluded by reaffirming the community’s stance. "I and my people have resolved that the organisers of the event should take the event to anywhere of their choice," he said, making it clear that Abalama would not be part of it. https://saharareporters.com/2025/03/14/prominent-rivers-monarch-rejects-wikes-thanksgiving-service-his-domain-cites-political

Nigeria will overcome banditry, corruption through prayers: APC Group
Mr Muhammad believed that with prayers, Nigeria would overcome the problems of kidnapping, banditry, corruption and other vices that hinder its growth.
The Confederation of All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups says with prayer, the country will overcome its challenges.
The group’s director-general, Kailani Muhammad, said this on Thursday night at the annual Iftar programme organised for its members, friends and associates in Abuja.
Mr Muhammad believed that with prayers, Nigeria would overcome the problems of kidnapping, banditry, corruption and other vices that hinder its growth and development.
“The only few problems that we have as a country can be overcome with prayers—the issues of armed banditry, corruption and inciting narratives,” he said.
He urged Christians and Muslims to use the Lent and Ramadan fasting period to pray for peace and unity in Nigeria.
Mr Muhammad said the annual break of the fast programme was organised for Nigerians, irrespective of religion and tribe, to show the spirit of unity and brotherhood.
“You can see both Muslims and Christians are here; that is the spirit of unity and brotherhood. We pray to Allah to give us peace and unity in Nigeria, and we also hope that the way things are going, Allah will guide us to the right path,” he said.
According to him, Ramadan and Lent coming at the same time signifies true nationalism and patriotism.
“For example, when a Catholic is entrusted with a position, he knows that one day he is going to be answerable to his Creator, the same thing with the Muslims, we believe in hereafter, after death.
“So, when somebody is given a position, he should be able to think that one day, he will be no more. So, he should do it to the best of his knowledge with trust, fear of God and sincerity,” Mr Muhammad said.

Sowore Calls For Arrest Of 'Prophet' Ebuka Obi Over Alleged Fraud, False Prophecies — Offers Support To Woman Arraigned For False Testimony
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) accused Obi of consistently scamming the public, and knocked the authorities for going after Alo instead.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for the arrest and prosecution of self-styled "Prophet" Ebuka Obi, rather than 32-year-old Loveth Helen Alo, who was arraigned on Tuesday for making false claims about owning a five-bedroom duplex in Enugu.
Sowore, in a statement following Alo’s arraignment at the Enugu North Magisterial District Court, accused Obi of deceiving the public with fraudulent prophecies and fake miracles while exploiting unsuspecting church members for financial gain.
“The person who should be arrested and arraigned is the so-called ‘Prophet’ Ebuka Obi, not Loveth Helen Alo,” Sowore said.
The former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) accused Obi of consistently scamming the public, and knocked the authorities for going after Alo instead.
He also expressed willingness to support Alo, urging anyone with her contact information to reach out.
Alo was brought before the court after claiming ownership of a property at WTC Estate, Enugu.
"This is unfair and unjust; the person who should be arrested is the so-called "Prophet" Ebuka Obi, who has consistently given false prophecies, scammed many unsuspecting church members and falsely obtained funds from the public with his fake miracles. If anyone knows this lady, please let me know how we can help," Sowore added.
Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that Alo had been arraigned before the Enugu North Magisterial District Court for publicly making false claims of owning a five-bedroom duplex located at WTC Estate, Enugu.
The suspect had claimed that God blessed her with the acquisition of the property during a testimony at Ebuka Obi’s Zion Prayer Ministry Movement Outreach in Lagos, Nigeria.
According to the Enugu State Police Command, in a statement on Tuesday, Alo was arrested on February 1, 2025, following a petition alleging that she falsely claimed ownership of the property.
In the statement signed by the Command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police stated that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation, admitting that she acted alone.
Ndukwe explained that Alo was charged with five counts, including obtaining by false pretence with intent to defraud, defamation of character, and attempting to commit a felony by trying to sell the property.
According to the statement, she was granted bail, and the case was adjourned to April 9, 2025, for further hearing.
The statement partly read: "Detectives from the Enugu State Police Command, attached to the Legal Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), on February 1, 2025, arrested a 32-year-old suspect, Loveth Helen Alo, following a petition alleging that she falsely claimed ownership of a five-bedroom duplex located at WTC Estate, Enugu.
"She allegedly presented the property as hers during a testimony at Zion Prayer Ministry Movement Outreach in Lagos, Nigeria.
"The suspect was seen in a viral video testifying at a Zion Ministry program, claiming that God had blessed her with the acquisition of the said property. Footage of the building was displayed in the church during her testimony.
"In another viral video, she allegedly stated that she had purchased the house for two hundred million Naira (N200,000,000.00).
"During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that she acted alone. She was arraigned today, March 11, 2025, before the Enugu North Magisterial District Court on a five-count charge, including obtaining by false pretence with intent to defraud, defamation of character, and attempting to commit a felony by trying to sell the property.
