Technology Market / Microsoft CEO In Kenya For Windows 10 Launch by MorrisaMkenya(m): 2:32pm On Jul 29, 2015 |
Barely a week after President Obama’s historic visit to Kenya for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is in Kenya for the worldwide launch of Windows 10 operating system. All eyes will be on Nairobi as one of the 13 cities spread across the globe hosting the much anticipated Windows 10 release in what is considered the biggest launch party in the company’s history. Nadella announced his arrival in the country via his Twitter account. Nadella is in Nanyuki to (witness) Microsoft’s low-cost wireless internet connection project that uses TV white spaces to connect remote areas cut off from the electricity grid. The project is the first to implement the technology in Africa. “I had a chance to participate in a skype call. I am going to another school where we will upgrade the machines to Windows 10 and then later in the afternoon we are going to have a party with the fans in Nairobi,” said Nadella on the company’s YouTube channel. Windows 10 will be available on tablets and PCs in 190 countries. The free update, though, is only available for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. In addition to new features on Cortana, Microsoft is expected to announce Windows 10 as the most secure platform yet and an upgraded conducive environment for developers. “Windows 10 delivers on our more personal computing vision, with a natural, mobile and trusted experience. Along with our partner, we’re excited to deliver the best Windows ever, which will empower people and organizations around the world to do great things,” said Terry Myerson, executive Vice President, Windows and Devices Group.

axum: Dear Axum, your Somalia that you keep ranting about here comparing it to kenya needs to be rebuilt...some kids there dont even know what school is, while you keep ranting about North Eastern Kenya being part of somalia. Go back to somalia and get what the real situation is there, trying to praise alshabaab which has nbeen killing Ministers in Somalia you sound irrelevant. Alshabaab attacks Turkey that is trying to build schools in somalia and you are here talking about them fulfilling somalia's foreign policy. Do you even have the statistics of literacy level between somalis and bantus while you are comparing them? Niggar you really sound ignorant comparing Kenya to somalia. 4 Likes |

pkjag: Axum has the habit of trying to remain relevant infront of kenyans, as if somalia being a failed state and the poorest country in the world is not a fact. Arguing with him will only get you agitated. when he says that somalis view bantus to be beneath them, thats the disadvantage of getting news from internet. how would they view bantus to be beneath them while they are camping at Dadaab? others are in war torn desert in somalia getting food from UN. Is he talking about the few somalis selling clothes in Eastlie Kenya?? Axum is one of the terrorists symphathisers who condone killing of innocent christians while he is camping in the western nations thank God he is not in Kenya we could have have lost more innocent Kenyans to Alshabaab in the name of foreign policy 3 Likes |

Business / Kenya Ranked Eighth Largest Global Geothermal Producer, Largest In Africa. by MorrisaMkenya(m): 1:56pm On Feb 20, 2015 |
Kenya’s installed steam power capacity now stands at 579MW, ahead of giant economies such as Japan, Russia, China and Germany – according to a study presented to the World Bank by state-owned KenGen. The US remains the world’s top geothermal producer with an installed capacity of 3,389 MW – nearly six times Kenya’s output – followed by Philippines (1,894MW), Indonesia (1,333MW), Mexico (980MW) and Italy is fifth with 901MW of steam power. New Zealand is graded sixth with 895MW ahead of Iceland (664MW). Rwandan president Paul Kagame and his host Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday switched on the second phase of the Olkaria project, offering households and manufacturers hope for cheaper electricity as steam displaces costly thermal power. “Kenya has immense geothermal production potential,” said Albert Mugo, KenGen managing director. “Geothermal power has contributed to lowering the cost of doing business by displacing thermal power and adds to Kenya’s green energy initiatives,” Mr Mugo said. The Olkaria geothermal power has pushed down fuel cost charge in electricity bills to an all-time low of Sh2.51 per kWh in February from a high of Sh7.22 per unit in August last year. Kenya has the potential to produce about 10,000 megawatts of geothermal power from the Rift Valley basin, studies by the Ministry of Energy show. KenGen’s Sh118.7 billion ($1.3 billion) Olkaria project is billed Africa’s largest steam development, consisting of four power plants each generating 70MW. READ: KenGen targets 560MW of more geothermal power In comparison, Japan has 537MW of geothermal, Russia (97MW), China (27MW), France (15MW) while Germany has 13MW. Geothermal now accounts for 29 per cent of Kenya’s energy mix, up from the previous 13 per cent four years ago. President Uhuru Kenyatta has lined up multiple geothermal projects and is banking on steam power to halve the cost of electricity to Sh9.54 (¢10.45) per kilowatt hour from the current average of Sh18.07 (¢19.78) per unit for domestic households. State-funded Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has signed a deal with three independent power producers (IPPs) - Ormat Technologies, Quantum Power and Sosian Energy – who will each build a 35MW steam power plant under a build–own–operate (BOO) model. OrPower 4, Kenya’s sole IPP generating geothermal energy, is currently increasing its output by 24MW, which will bring its total capacity to 134MW. 1 Like 1 Share

Investment / Nairobi Now Ranked As Most Intelligent African City by MorrisaMkenya(m): 5:53am On Feb 13, 2015 |
You may not like certain things about Nairobi — traffic jams, matatu chaos, whatnot. But it is the most intelligent city in Africa, according to an international think tank, just three places behind the world’s top seven finalists. Had it made it to that top league, the Kenyan capital, ranked tenth overall, would have qualified for the next round, in which world cities will compete for the 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year Award. The contest, which is on its tenth year, is organised by the Intelligence Community Forum to recognise the achievements of cities that have built inclusive and prosperous economies based on information and communication technologies. Nairobi was the only African city on the short list of 21 hubs worldwide for 2015. This is the second year in a row that the capital has made it to this short list, and apart from Cape Town in 2008, no other African city has achieved that. Intelligent Community Forum co-founder Robert Bell said, in a statement, that Nairobi made it to the list because of its level of innovation. “We see a strong foundation being put into place in Nairobi: sensible, pro-growth government policy, a more diversified economy, and an innovation ecosystem of startups, international companies and universities. “The city is also one of two sub-Saharan cities likely to achieve developed status within 20 years. If the prediction proves true, it will mark a sharp positive turn at the end of a very long road,” he said. The opening up of communication, especially through the fibre optic cable and a widespread use of mobile money transfer services, especially M-Pesa, were among Nairobi’s strengths in the rating. According to the think tank, M-Pesa, which handles US $320 million (Sh29 billion) in payments monthly, equivalent to a quarter of Kenya’s GDP, is responsible for driving mobile phone penetration to nearly 70 per cent. In the process, it has activated economic activity by introducing banking services to low-income earners in towns and rural areas. Incubation centres like I-Hub and the Chandaria Business and Innovation Incubation Centre were also mentioned. Arlington (US), Astana (Kazakhstan), Aurora (US), Changhua (China, Ohio (US), Iowa (US), Edmonton (Canada), Ipswich (UK) and South Dakota (US) are the cities that beat Nairobi. http://www.nation.co.ke/news/Nairobi-now-ranked-as-best-African-city/-/1056/2620006/-/4q1nynz/-/index.html |
