PoliticsDPR Seals Off Over 50 Stations In Ibadan by Movic1(op): 1:08pm On Nov 05, 2015
THE Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) says N2 million fine will be imposed on any petrol filling station in Kwara State hoarding, cheating and indulging in sharp practices.
DPR Operation Controller in the state, Mr Salvation Philip, said this on Wednesday when he led a team on inspection of some petrol stations in the state.
According to him, apart from paying the fine, the affected stations will also be suspended for two months.
The warning came on the heels of lingering fuel crisis in Ilorin.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that few filling stations in Ilorin and environs, which have the product, have long queues of motorists.
Philip said the measure would not only send warning signal to marketers but also deter others believed to be perpetrating the unpatriotic act.
He said hoarding of fuel was criminal and would be treated as such.
The controller said that the affected station would be banned from lifting fuel in any depot of the country.
He said that DPR would formally communicate to the erring companies the embargo placed on their operations.
He said that the department was disturbed by unwholesome activities of some station owners because their illegal practice affected business activities and masses in the state.
During the inspection, the monitoring team visited a petrol station on Ajase-Ipo Road, and discovered that the station was selling at N120 per litre, contrary to the official price of N87.
The DPR boss directed the station to immediately revert to the approved price and warned that the agency would not tolerate sabotage.
About 3,200 litres of petrol was discovered in another station on the road when the team visited the station.
The station manager claimed that the product was reserved for the owner of the station.

PoliticsNNPC Addresses Fuel Queues by Movic1(op): 9:10am On Nov 05, 2015
Abuja – The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has stepped up measures to eliminate fuel queues across some major cities in the country.
Ohi Alegbe, the Group General Manager of Public Affairs, said the corporation had injected additional volumes of Premium Motor Spirit to enrich product availability in the affected areas.
Alegbe said NNPC was working assiduously with its downstream subsidiary company, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC)and other downstream players to consolidate the prevailing stability in the supply and distribution of fuel.
The corporation had commissioned an inspection team from the PPMC to visit operational areas to ensure compliance with rules regarding loading and product evacuation.
He said the corporation noted that the initiative to eliminate fuel queues had been bolstered with the approval by the Federal Government for the immediate payment of N413 billion to oil marketers.
This is outstanding payment for subsidy claims.
“It is our belief that with the outstanding payment due to oil marketers now assured, the marketers and other downstream players will join hands with the NNPC to guarantee that the nation remains wet with petroleum products all year round” he said.

PoliticsSaraki Begs PDP Senators by Movic1(op): 9:03am On Nov 03, 2015
Senate President Bukola Saraki has reached out to senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for rapprochement following Thursday’s walkout of the Senate by the opposition lawmakers over the confirmation of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as a minister.
Sources on both sides confirmed that rapprochement was ongoing and that Saraki had reached out to the PDP lawmakers to sustain their friendship.
Bukola Saraki
“The Senate President is unmindful of the friendship between him and the PDP senators and he is not taking that for granted. He has immediately reached out to the senators and assured them that party loyalty was responsible for his actions. I think they are resolving the grievances,” one of the sources said.
The source added that the senators were hopeful that Saraki would “make up for the lapses” in the distribution of the chairmanship of Senate Standing committees which he is expected to unveil next week.
Other sources said that Saraki had made spirited efforts ahead of the Thursday sitting to win the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio and other PDP Senators to his side on the Amaechi issue but the PDP senators remained adamant ahead of that day’s sitting.
In fact, it was gathered that senators of the PDP held two closed door meetings in the Senate on Wednesday night and early on Thursday to fine-tune their strategy to stop Amaechi.

PoliticsBusinessman Bags 10 Years In Prison For Cocaine Trafficking by Movic1(op): 8:28am On Nov 03, 2015
A FEDERAL High Court in Lagos yesterday sentenced a 38-year-old man, Chibueze Onedigbo, to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking.
Oneigbo, a businessman, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one-count charge of drug trafficking on August 29, 2013.
NDLEA
Justice Musa Kurya, in his judgment, said that the sentence was in line with the sentencing guideline recently released for Federal High Court judges.
“I have considered all the above, and I am of the view that the prosecution has discharged its burden of proof.”
“I have listened to the plea for leniency by the accused, and have taken into consideration all that has been said. In any case, the court is duty-bound to sentence the accused having found him guilty.
“Moreso, the court is guided by the sentencing guideline recently released for Federal High Court judges.”
“Consequently, I hereby sentence the accused to 10 years imprisonment, from the day of this judgment.”
“The drug exhibits in custody of the NDLEA are to be destroyed within 30 days, if there is no appeal against this judgment,’’ he said.
The convict had pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in like sum.
The NDLEA Prosecutor, Mr Linus Nor, had told the court that the convict was arrested on April 7, 2013, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
Nor said that about 210 grammes of cocaine was recovered from the convict during the outward clearance of passengers on board a Qatar airline flight.
He said that the convict had concealed the drug substance in a black leather bag and was thereafter handed over to the agency for prosecution.
According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of Sections 11 (b) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence of drug trafficking could attract up to a term of life imprisonment if found guilty.
The NDLEA called two witnesses to prove its case against the convict.

PoliticsErosion : Igbo Leaders Calls For Immediate Intervention Of The FG by Movic1(op): 6:47am On Nov 03, 2015
Onitsha – Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has called on the Federal Government to save the Onitsha/Enugu Express Road and Onitsha/Owerri Expressway from imminent collapse due to erosion menace.
Obiano made the call while inspecting the erosion sites along the Onitsha and Owerri Expressways on Saturday.
The Onitsha-Enugu road has caved-in at the foot of the fly-over at the New parts Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state while erosion has cut-off one lane at two points at Okija-Ihiala axis of Onitsha-Owerri road.
Obiano said erosion posed danger to human lives and business activities in the area.
He said he had made contact with the Presidency after inspecting the site recently.
He said he had mandated IDC Construction Company to mobilise to site and start palliative works to save the road.
He reiterated that the Federal Government owed the state N25billion accruing from construction of federal roads in the state.
“This is the reason why we must get permission from the Federal Government before embarking on palliatives on the eroded site.
“It is very clear from the gravity of the erosion that the state alone cannot handle the project with its meagre resources because it will run into billions of naira’’, Obiano said.
The governor, however, advised Anambra people to bear with the state while it persuades the Federal Government to come to its aid and save the people from danger posed by the bad roads. Leaders of the affected communities calls for immediate intervention of the federal government on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway which has collapsed completely as well as assistance in checking the increasing devastation of erosion in the state.
Senator Barnabas Gemade, leader of the delegation leader of the delegation who visited the erosion site expressed surprise at the extent of dilapidation on the expressway as well as the magnitude of erosion in the state. He raised the alarm for urgent attention to prevent continued fatalities in the affected areas.
