Former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon yesterday pleaded with Nigerians to give President Muhammadu Buhari time to fix the country’s problems.
Gowon, who noted that governance was never an easy affair, said: “Nigeria is not an easy place to govern.”
He stressed the need to give any new government in power time to “put things in order”.
The ex-head of state and leader of Nigeria Prays spoke to reporters at the Ikenne home of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, after leading a delegation of the Awolowo Foundation to the family to condole with it on the death of its matriarch, Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu (HID) Awolowo.
He noted that when he came to power after the death of Maj.-Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, he thought that within three months or six months, his government would be able to sort out all that was wrong with the country at the time, but it soon dawned on him that things could not be done overnight.
Gowon said: “Let me tell you this; it was not easy. When I became Head of State, I hoped that three months, six months the most; we would be done. But when you have problems in a nation, it is not easy to do them overnight. So, you’ve always got to give time and you’ve got to be patient for leaders to be able to get things in order.
“Whenever any government comes in, give them time to be able to put things right. Nigeria is not an easy place to govern.
“I can assure that there are as many problems as there are Nigerians in the world and everybody wants to do things in a particular way, in his own way and probably for his own interest.
“And you think of that; how are you going to get all that put together and put things right? I think we’ve got to be patient and then we got to cooperate with the government to do the right thing.
“Always never be tired in telling the government what needed to be done in order to improve things.”
He noted that
his military government would not have been able to achieve much more at a critical period of the nation’s history without the expertise and commitment of the late Chief Awolowo, who was his Finance minister then.
Gowon, who is the chairman, Board of Trustees of the Awolowo Foundation, added that he could not have succeeded in persuading Awolowo to serve in his government, if HID had not influenced her husband into taking the appointment when it was presented.

MARKETS across the Ondo State capital Akure have been operating below par as Igbo traders shut up shop in protest at the ongoing dispute between traditional rulers the Deji of Akure and the Eze Ndigbo.
Earlier this week, Sir Gregory Iloehike was enthroned as the Eze Ndigbo of Akure in his own palace but the Deji, Oba Aladetoyinbo Odundun II opposed the move saying the city cannot have two traditional rulers. He subsequently marched to the Eze Ndigbo's palace and asked that it be shut down.
Regarded as the leader of Igbos in Akure, the Eze Ndigbo, who is the deputy national president of Ndi Eze’N’Association of Uzo Ije in Diaspora, was actually originally named to the position in August 2011 but only just assumed the title. With the Deji of Akure adamant that he will dethrone , Sir Iloehike, Igbos in the city have decided to shut down their shops in protest.
Early this morning, Ndigbo, who converged on their secretariat at Gbogi Street as early as 7am, warned the Deji of Akure against dethroning the Eze Ndigbo. They insisted that the traditional ruler has no power to dethrone Sir Iloehike, who is the head of the migrant community, not under him.
Oba Odundun II had accused the Eze Ndigbo of insubordination and disrespect. However, Sir Iloehike said he was not rude to the Deji, adding that he contributed immensely to the monarch’s installation.
Sir Iloehike added: “The Deji called me at 8.48pm last Sunday inviting me to his palace and I honoured his invitation on Monday morning. I went with one of my chiefs but when I got to the palace, I saw youths numbering over 200 who started shouting as I entered.
“I suspected that they were mobilised by the monarch and I showed respect to him by prostrating but the monarch threatened to drive out the Igbo from Akure and when I asked why, the youth descended on me. They tore my beads and removed my crown and they attempted to beat me but the police officers at the palace rescued me.”
He said Igbos had been living harmoniously in Akure for over 70 years without any friction with the natives and urged the Deji-in-council not to cause any inter-ethnic crisis in the state. High Chief Okechukwu Okorie, the president of Ohaneze Ndigbo, maintained that any attempt to dethrone the Eze Ndigbo would be resisted by the Igbo.
Chief Okorie noted that Sir Iloehike has not committed any offence. He added that only the Igbo who elected Sir Iloehike have the right to remove him.

Drawing a line from the late Ikemba of Nnewi, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu who had continually warned Ndigbo to come home and invest in their towns and villages, Ramas told our correspondent in this exclusive interview of his tears and pains at the colossal losses of Igbo people in Nigeria, especially in the Northern states since independence.
“I was present when the late Ikemba of Nnewi, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was invited to the commissioning of the International Trade Fair on Badagry Road in Lagos. The business community and core investors in the complex being mostly Igbo people, they had thought Ojukwu will sing and praise their efforts, but Ikemba cried and told the Igbo people to their faces that he was totally disappointed in them.
“He warned them that in the end, they will regret all these investments they are pouring into Lagos State because in a matter of time, only with a pen through one legislation will Lagos State legislators will write off their property. They will forfeit all their homes and investments they have sunk into Lagos State and they will go back home and start struggling again in their old age until they die. Ojukwu had told them it happened before, and it will happen again.
“Since the past ten years I have been talking to Igbo people in Nigeria and in the Diaspora to look back home, to move their massive investments, industries, commerce, even intellectual properties to their own people, but nobody is listening; the successful Ibo business class think only them know how to reason, that only them have first class brains, but let us borrow a leaf from the former Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio.
“Apapa wharf is not the only hob of business in the country; there is also the Warri wharf and the Calabar Wharf where Ibos can go and invest and I tell you, both wharfs can be as good as Lagos tin can. I don’t know what so attract Igbo people that they commit all that they have into Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria without remembering that they have towns and villages lying empty with youths and elderly people languishing in poverty. My people should adhere to the adage says, East or West, Home is the best.’
Ramas pointed to some five star hotels and estates owned by Igbo business men and lamented that the spirit of Lagos has taken everything away from his people.
‘Rock View Hotel in Apapa, Lagos, for example, was built by the owner of Young Shall Grow transport; yet this man is one of those who made the building of our Anambra State airport impossible till today. All those transporters, according to my personal investigation, are the brains behind infrastructural failures for decades since Anambra became a State, so much that we could not build even an aerodrome where a helicopter or small planes will land in the State.
“Since I was in Lagos in 1980, I heard about Ogbar airport, but till this moment, there is no clearance and no progress; there is another airport they are trying again but nothing has come out of it. Igbo transporters as well as those generator merchants that sabotage power flow in Nigeria believe there is no development coming to Anambra, so they enrich other states and kill their own fatherland.”
The industrialist and traditionalist also frowned at the slow pace of his own state government in grassroots development.
“I left Lagos city and returned home to develop the grassroots; helping my native people and developing my community; helping the widows, people abandoned in hospitals in the state and outside, championing the course of youths and empowering both young and old, yet the state government does not even acknowledge efforts of people like me.
“What is the hope of our future generation if all our labour becomes the prosperity of other states and other nations? Look at all the years Anambra spent in litigation fighting autonomy in our local government areas in our own Nri kingdom; it is only recently government yielded to that demand after some 22 years! Freedom is sweet; freedom is development, like the Local Government for example, because its creation will now usher in development to the grassroots.”
Ramas is not alone in this view; the overview of a unified Ndigbo as a people or Nigeria as a nation as assessed by a member of the highly esteemed Enugwu-Ukwu Traditional Council and lecturer at the Madonna University in Anambra State, Dr. M.C. Nwafor, falls far short of optimism.
“You can see that there nothing united in this nation at all, except perhaps, the game of football which itself has been politicised and tribalised; now players have to be brought in from all the geo political zones, which is not the spirit of soccer. The fate of this country as one nation is as good as anyone’s guess. Culturally we are not the same; in religion we are not the same. Now your son cannot do his youth service in the North.”
Buttressing the pains of Ramas on Igbos in the Diaspora, Nwafor pointed out:
“Consider seriously: how many Northerners own any property in Enugwu, Anambra or other Eastern States for example? Apart from one they call Baba Enugu, no single Northerner owns anything worth calling a property; no Yoruba man will invest and own a property in the East; it is only the Igbo man that is nationalistic; wherever he goes he invests and converts it to his own home and moves in with his entire family: no other tribe does that.
“From all indications I am not too optimistic about this country continuing as one sovereign nation, except God Almighty intervenes,” Ramas concluded.

Adulrahman Danbazzau (Kano), Amina Ibrahim Mohammed (Gombe), Mr. Suleiman Hussaini Adamu, Mr. Ibrahim Usman Jibrin, Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigeria National Corporation (NNPC) Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) , Senator Chris Ngige, Senator Aisha Jummai Alhassan, Mr. Solomon Dalong, Mrs Kemi Adeosun and Senator Hadi Sirika.
The confirmation of Mohammed, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Publicity Secretary, was as dramatic as his screening on Tuesday.
Mohammed’s screening on Tuesday was an exchange of banters between him and the senators. But yesterday, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) senators shouted ‘nay’ when Senate President Bukola Saraki called out his name for confirmation. But APC senators rose stoutly in his defence with their ‘yes’ shout.
Eight of the ministersl-designate were yesterday screened. The Oyo State nominee, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu, was not screened apparently for lack of time. He is likely to be screened today.
Former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s screening was deferred because the petition against him had not been considered by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions. Amaechi is also likely to be screened today.
Musa Ibeto’s nomination was withdrawn by the President. He replaced the Niger State nominee with Bawa Bwari, a former House of Representatives member.
Ministers-designate such as Ngige, Sirika and Alhassan were asked to introduce themselves, make some remarks and “take a bow and go” being former senators.
They spoke on a number of issues.

Former governor of Lagos state who appeared before the Senators from 11. 48am to1pm told the Senators of the need to review the Abuja Master Plan which has been distorted, just as he said that it has become imperative to decentralize the Nigerian Police as he advocated the establishment of a state policing system if the nation’s insecurity problem must be addressed.
Fashola who defended allegations concerning a N78 million website and N258 million borehole, said that throughout his stay as governor for eight years, nobody has so far come out to accuse him of enriching himself corruptly, even as he said that he did not personally sign any cheque as well as his commissioners. He also apologised to Nigerians for deporting some citizens of the state,particularly from the South-East to their states of origin.
He said: “The number available to me is that we have probably a standing Police force of about 500,000, les than a million in every event to a population that is heading to 180 million. So, we are under-policed and if the Federal Government decide to take up these responsibilities on its own, can it do so in the micro level that is necessary at the state and local government levels?
“My recommendation is a compelling urgency for decentralization. I have made those recommendations to some of the committees on constitution amendment where I was privileged to make presentations. There have been arguments about why we should not go there but those argument did not go far. They did not address the fundamental responsibilities that government has. I have heard the argument that government will abuse the Police for political purposes.
“The abuse of political power is not as important as loss of lives, and everything we do to advance that cause makes us more respected as government that cares. There is a process for curing abuse of institution but there is no process known to me today for recovering lives already lost. These are challenges that are before us as a people and as a nation. At the state level, you can also wonder what governors are going through.
“They have parliaments that make laws but they have no capacity to enforce their own laws. We are talking about domestic issues — rape and domestic violence — there are criminal offences in many states across the country but who is prosecuting them? This is because the Police officer is too busy chasing a robbery. Our mothers, daughters and sisters are expected to tolerate rape. If we are afraid of abuse, one of the things I will suggest is that we start a state Police.
“I proposed a system where we have six zonal commands from existing the Police force. It is not every state that can start if it cannot fund it. States who can fund can decide to employ 1,000 men, the Police Service Commission will train and graduate and if at the end of the training, only 800 pass the exam, they would be employed. The state buys their uniforms, there is a national license.”
On security, Fashola said, “ As far as security is concerned, that is the primary purpose of every government. It is the purpose for which government exists, to protect the citizens and their assets and it is the toughest job that any government can have. It is the challenge that leaders across the world are facing — terrorism, youthful gangs, cults and so on.
“My attitude was to see criminals as my competitors and in a competition, my desire was to use my resources to outspend my competitors, out-think the competition and out-maneovre the competition. But our risks are different. As a governor, my job was to ensure that nobody died, my job was to ensure that nobody robs. So, I have no magic for error. Every citizen that was robbed, I have failed that citizen. So, I have to be right every time, the criminal has to be right only once.
“So, we brought all the stakeholders — from the banks who were being robbed everyday then without the capacity to respond and one of the things I told one of the bankers was that if he could protect and bullet-proof his banks, if he cared about his workers and customers, can the government bullet-proof every home? If you bring some of this money and we put it in a pool and give these Policemen, it will help us and so, the point here is that there is a necessity here to decentralize.
Speaking on Abuja, the nominee said, “ In deciding what to do about Abuja, these are the real issue. First, getting a hold of its resources, knowing its districts and its problems, knowing the people, sharing with them what the thoughts are. The Master Plan itself may perhaps need to be reviewed. Plans are not static documents, they must be reviewed periodically. A level of consultation and knowledge would be necessary in order to accurately say this is where Abuja should be heading. In spite of our complaints, it is still a beautiful city, getting it to be better than it is, is a matter of choice for all of us. Laws have to be enforced and it should be rigorously followed.”
On old and young politician and how they relate to economic development, he said, “The sum total of every nation is its people. The more elderly ones are the more matured ones. No matter how hard we try, we will never discount the experience, the maturity, counselling and guiding support of people who are older than us. We must continue to interface with them. I must walk away from the tendency to condemn the level of our national development. We must begin to see our cup as half full rather than half empty.”
On the alleged website project, Fashola said: “Let me say first that it raises the question of public understanding of the role governors, public servants and some have a surprise to learn that as a governor of Lagos State, I didn’t sign cheques, none of my commissioners signed cheques. I didn’t fix contract prices. It is an institutional process.
“The only training I have is that of a lawyer. Nobody can award contract over benchmark price. Throughout my tenure, I have been confronted with the price of things and the reality is that when you design a road, what you meet in reality when construction starts is usually not what you end up with. In all of these, nobody has alleged that I have corruptly enriched myself. I could not have been a master in computer and technology. I need something to do my work.”
When asked about his definition of loyalty, Fashola who noted that he remained loyal to causes he believed in said: “As for loyalty, the concept of loyalty is a strange one. The real answer to that question is, may your loyalty not be tested. I always pray that my loyalty will not be tested because you might have to take a bullet for somebody. We discuss it loosely, but in public service, I have remained loyal to causes that I have signed onto and in all my life, nobody can fairly accuse me of giving my word and going back on my word.”
Fashola calls for state police, apologises on deportation of Igbos
On deportation of Igbo people, he said: “In a federation, the right to free movement is not absolute, it carries with it a responsibility not to be a nuisance.” He said those moved to their states of origin were those who asked to be taken home. Fashola concluded his submission by saying he apologised in the interest of national cohesion

JUDE Idimogu, is a lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Though he hails from Imo State, he successfully won a seat in the House on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defeating the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the keenly contested election. During an interview with him,He speaks on how he copes as the first Igbo man to win a seat in the Lagos Assembly, his constituency projects and other national issues.

There are speculations that some mem- bers of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the Assembly plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress(APC), because they are apprehensive that they may not win a second term. How true is this?


It is good you called it speculations because we are eight PDP members in the Assembly and I have not noticed any indication from any of our members that they plan to defect. Even if anyone plans to do that, I personally think that it would be too early. However, it
is not business as usual because of the recent Supreme Court judgment barring political office holders from defecting to other parties unless their tenure ends. So defection would be impossible for now.
But the Supreme Court judgment gives a caveat in the sense that one can defect if there is crisis at the national level of a party, then one can defect….
The issue is that the APC is made up of three parties and I do not see anything special about the party. In the PDP right now, there is crisis, but it would definitely be resolved soon. In every association, there is bound to be crisis, but the thing that makes you stand out is your ability to resolve it.


Do you have any plans to defect?


I do not have any plans to defect anytime soon. I love the PDP because they made me what I am today. The party gave the platform to contest and I do not want to betray the trust they have put in me. When we talk about the future, we should bear in mind that people would always consider options that would favour them. But as it is, I remain loyal to the PDP.


What is the situation of the Lagos State PDP?
The house is not still in order for now but we are working towards it. It is not something that would be resolved in a few days. It would take a while, but we are working towards it. It is not easy being the ruling party for 16 years, and then all of a sudden, you find yourself in the opposition. It would take a lot of time to adjust because a lot of things went wrong. The future of the PDP is bright and I believe the crisis would be resolved soon. With sincerity, hard work and integrity especially from our leaders, we would shine again. We still have many of our leaders in the party, even though some have left. Our leaders have been meeting and we would get over the problems we are facing.


The issue of where the national chairman of the party would emerge is causing crisis in the PDP. As a stakeholder, are you also of the school of thought that the South West should produce the national chairman of the party?


From my own point of view, I feel that since the presidential candidate of the party is likely to come from the north, it should not also produce the chairman. There is nothing wrong in asking for it, but right now, we should consider the zones where PDP has a stronghold based on the last elections. All the zones are free to contest, but I feel that the PDP should zone the chairmanship to a zone that is predominantly PDP.


You are the first south easterner to win elections into the legislature in the South West.

How challenging has it been?
Someone once said that after Nnamdi Azikiwe, I am the next Igbo person that has won elections into the legislature in the South West. My experience has been very fine, but it has put me under a lot of pressure. The expectations from me are very high especially from my constituents and those that voted me in. It is not easy to please everyone because so much is expected of you. At the same time, I am also happy that the high expectations are making me a better person and I have made a promise to my constituents that I won’t disappoint them. The pressure has put me on my toes and I am enjoying the attention it is giving. My wife is Yoruba and I understand the language to an extent. However, I have tried to prevail on my colleagues to stop the use of Yoruba Language and revert to the use of the English during our Thursday sitting, though I have not moved a motion to that effect, I will soon do that because i dont think its proper to speak local language in the house.

What steps are you taking to attract projects to your constituency?
You can see already that the governor has started rehabilitation in many of the bad roads in my constituency and he has promised to do more. I met him personally to draw his attention to the state of the roads and he promised to rehabilitate some of them. I am happy
that he is fulfilling his promise. Even if it’s a palliative measure, I am happy that something is being done. Prior to my election, I have always been concerned about the state of
bad roads and one of my campaign promises was that I would do everything within my power to lobby for most of the bad roads to be constructed. Even though it’s not within my purview to construct roads, I have consistently canvassed for the roads to be rehabilitated
and the press has also been of help in creating awareness on the state of the roads.
In terms of constituency projects, things would definitely take shape very soon. Things are slow now probably because a cabinet is yet to be constituted. When that is done, things would start taking shape and every constituency would have the opportunity to present their needs.
