From what appears to be a lull in their operations, armed robbers have again been on the prowl, maiming, killing innocent people, police officers and dispossessing Nigerians of huge sums. Even churches are not spared. Eugene Agha writes In the past four weeks, bandits are having field day in most cities across the country, killing no fewer than 100 persons in the process. Several other persons were injured, mostly targeted at financial institutions across the nation. Among those who were cut down by the bullets of these notorious gunmen were policemen posted to banks. Even though the Police high command in Abuja said it was on top of the situation, the attacks are becoming too frequent. Recently a gang of armed robbers desecrated Cannanland, the headquarters of the Living Faith Church otherwise known as Winners Chapel, located in Otta, Ogun State, during which four banks located within the premises were attacked. Robbers also killed two policemen on guard. The Canaanland incident occurred at about 11.30 am after about 15 armed men stormed one of the banks shooting sporadically. Those who witnessed the shooting said that customers in the banks were held hostage as the robbers went about their business. The bandits later moved to the other banks in the area, shooting two workers following their refusal to open the vault. One of the staff of the bank who was shot later died before any help could come to him. According to the witnesses, those who were killed attempted to resist the robbers, but were easily outnumbered by the robbers who had more sophisticated weapons. Policemen who were killed in Surulere, Lagos, were ambushed at NEPA bus-stop along Aguda road. The robbers were said to have opened fire on the patrol van with registration number NPF 9542 B immediately they sighted it. The blood-stained van which the policemen used before they met with their death was however sighted at Aguda police division when THISDAY visited. The van had bullet holes on the windscreen and bonnet A few days after the policemen were killed in Surulere, another gang of robbers attacked a bank in Ketu, Kosofe Local Government leaving no fewer than twelve persons, including two policemen, dead, while several others sustained injuries. According to police eyewitness, the incident happened at about 12 pm and threw the entire area into chaos. However, a member of the robbery gang was also reportedly killed in the operation in which the robbers carted away a yet-to-be-ascertained amount of money in their get away vehicle. The money was alleged to have been stacked in three 'Ghana-Must-Go' bags. The armed robbers were said to have robbed the bank in a commando style as they fired indiscriminately. In the process, three policemen on guard at the bank and an adjoining bank were killed. One of the civilians killed was said to be coming out from a drycleaner's shop. An irate mob, in reaction torched the Kosofe Police Post to protest the killings. Reacting to the attack on the Police Station by the mob, Governor Raji Fashola of Lagos State vowed that his administration would do everything possible to combat armed robbery, adding that positive steps had been taken towards achieving the desired result. Fashola was said to have stated that the families of the slain policemen would be adequately compensated, an action which drew instant applause from other serving policemen. This they said had never happened in the history of the police force. They were quick to point at the shacks which families of deceased policemen live after they were allegedly booted out of their apartments in the barracks by those who want it at all cost. The bodies of the victims have since been deposited at various mortuaries in Ikeja and Lagos Island, while those who sustained injuries were receiving medical attention as at press time. One of the dead policemen, whose body was conveyed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, in a police van with Lagos registration PF 5423, was identified as Sergeant Elisha Maneh of the Mobile Police 20 Unit. Robbers also struck in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital where several banks were robbed. The police, for the first time, gave the figure of those who died in an armed robbery operation in the state as five, including a police sergeant. It said that eight others were injured in the incident which occurred at the Ereja Square, on Tuesday, February 12. A trader at Ereja market square, who was at the scene of the incident, said he saw more than 12 bodies around the bank premises. Another witness said the robbers killed about 15 people. The Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, Mr. Joshua Olayemi, was quoted to have said that the robbers arrived at the bank premises between 10.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. in three vehicles, a bus and two cars. The robbers, according to him, were armed with sophisticated weapons and were led into the bank by their leader who was dressed in a police officer's uniform and fired sporadically to scare away people. As they gained entry into the bank, they carted away some money. It was gathered that the robbers also attempted to rob another first generation bank located in the same vicinity, but were unsuccessful. The PPRO, who confirmed that five people were killed including a police sergeant, said that eight others were receiving treatment A few days after the Osogbo robbery attack, at least 10 persons including seven police officers were said to have been feared dead in an early morning raid launched by a five-man robbery gang in Ibadan. The victims were reportedly shot dead on a Saturday morning by the armed bandits at Ibadan end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. Relevant Links West Africa Crime and Corruption Legal and Judicial Affairs Nigeria The spate of armed robbery attacks sweeping across the country, went up one notch on February 12 with the killing of no fewer than 11 persons, including a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and school children, when a 10-man robbery gang stormed a first generation bank in Afikpo, Ebonyi State. The killing of the 11 persons brings the death toll of the victims of the robbery operations that took place in Osun and Ebonyi States within two days to 23 even as police investigation into the attacks has been ongoing. The gang was said to have also carted away a whooping sum of money said to be close to N15 million from the Afikpo bank. An eye witness account said the robbers arrived the bank at about 10.30 am in two V-C Land Cruiser jeeps, and shot sporadically into the air in a bid to scare people away. While about 20 persons are said to be wounded in the operation that lasted till 12 noon, sources said the NYSC member killed was billed for her passing out parade Thursday of that week, as she was said to have carried out her primary assignment, as one of the assistants to the chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, Mr. Obinna Agha. With the attacks on two members of THISDAY staff and others on February 13, in Lagos, there seems to be no hiding place for Nigerians as the men of the underworld are relentlessly on the prowl. http://allafrica.com/stories/200802150611.html |
Diet Coke is the best-selling sugar-free soft drink in most countries in the word but rumors and curiosity abound about the drink’s health effects, some blatantly false and some surprisingly true. Can you separate fact from urban legend? 1. People have grown deathly ill from drinking cans of Diet Coke with dirty tops. Myth. Legend has it that the lethal hantavirus spreads to humans when they drink soda contaminated by the droppings of warehouse rats or mice. True, humans can catch hantavirus from rodent waste bur there are no known cases of a person getting it from unclean Diet Coke cans (or any food packaging). Still, it’s a good idea to wipe icky stuff off your top before popping it. 2. Diet Coke is 99% water. Fact. One Diet Coke ad actually brags about this. The marketing strategy behind the ad hinges on the idea that anything that is mostly water can’t be bad for you. (Not true. Insecticides are often mostly water.) What’s important is what makes up that other 1%. 3. Diet Coke’s sweetener was developed as an ant poison and is therefore hazardous. Myth. Aspartame, the artificial sweetener in Diet Coke, was created by a chemist working on an ulcer drug. The compound doesn’t kill ants or short-circuit their nervous systems, as legend has it. Even if those things were true, they wouldn’t prove that aspartame is dangerous to humans, since many products that aren’t toxic to us (like black pepper) repel ants. 4. Diet Coke exacerbates arthritis. Myth. In fact, the aspartame in Diet Coke may actually ease arthritis! Studies of people with osteoarthritis or a mix of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis found that aspartame relieved their pain and helped their joints move more fluidly. (Note: The studies weren’t done specifically with Diet Coke.) 5. Drinking Diet Coke while eating Mentos candies can create a mildly explosive reaction in your body. This is a known fact though you can’t consume enough to cause a major internal eruption, yet some very sticky people have had a wild and crazy time creating geysers that shoot over 10 feet high, including a mini-version of the Las Vegas Bellagio fountains that involved hundreds of candies and 200 liters of Diet Coke. How does it work? Certain types of Mentos have a microscopically rough surface that, when combined with the carbon dioxide in Diet Coke (or any soda), seems to create an insane number of bubbles. Pressure builds FAST and boom! Watch it happen. 6. Drinking Diet Coke can cause or worsen multiple sclerosis symptoms. Myth. The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation has debunked this falsehood, as have the FDA and other organizations. The notion that Diet Coke can cause neurological disorders may be based on an observation by the Centers for Disease Control years ago, that in some people, aspartame seemed linked to mild neurological problems, such as headaches and moodiness. However, the CDC found that these symptoms are mild and affect most people, not just diet soda drinkers. 7. Diet Coke isn’t 0 calorie. Myth. Contrary to Web rumors, Diet Coke does not have 40 or more calories, and the company does not get to call its drink calorie-free in exchange for paying big ol’ fines to the FDA. Drinks can only be called “calorie-free” if they have fewer than 5; Diet Coke has less than 1. 8. Diet Coke may cause cancer. A big maybe. Arguments about an aspartame-cancer connection have flared for years. Recently, Italian researchers concluded that aspartame does increase certain cancers in rats, including breast cancer. But the scientific truism applies: Rats aren't people. And more than 200 studies, including one on humans in 2006 by the National Cancer Institute, have found no evidence of this. Still, suspicious groups remain, including the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an ardent consumer advocacy group. What to do? Drink responsibly and we don't mean taking the FDA's "acceptable" max of 21 cans of aspartame-sweetened soda a day for a 165-pound adult although research says there's an informal consensus that, for adults, a can a day is likely to do no harm. Tons of cola drinkers have switched to diet formulas to slash their sugar intake. And avoiding foods with simple sugars as one of their first five ingredients can make your RealAge 3.6 years younger. Nigeria seems to have turned into a hotspot for women being smuggled into the sex trade. This shit is crazy. Trafficking women for prostitution became a problem in Benin City in the mid-1980s when free-market economic reforms led to massive job losses and impoverished many Nigerians.Today, the Nigeria-Italy prostitution trade has become a sinister, self-propagating cycle. Now, more than 80 percent of Nigerian women trafficked abroad to work in the sex trade come from Edo state, where Benin City is located, according to United Nations estimates. The main destination is Italy. The reality is some women choose this, but many are smuggled not only for sex work, but for forced labor and domestic help. But this is the part that really got me. Women are being manipulated using local traditional oaths to scare them and force them into sex work. Before they leave Nigeria, women are taken to traditional shrines where they swear to pay their debts to their madams and not to denounce them to the police. The women leave fingernails, pubic hairs, soiled underwear and other intimate items at the shrines. These, according to traditional beliefs which are strong in Benin, give the priests power to harm them wherever they are in the world. Finally, the article talks about this notion of sacrifice and how in this particular culture sacrifice is a sign of femininity. I think that unfortunately is a global phenomenon. How does one absolve Christianity in this situation? What would Christians suggest as either a remedy for the current situation or a preventative measure against future atrocities? What is the difference between this Christianity and your own (assuming there is one)? Given that both your faith and that of these witch hunters is all internal and without any verifiable justification, why should we in the outside world treat different people of faith any differently? http://debatingchristianity.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7192 |
An Abuja-based cleric, Prophet Uche Iloduba, has told the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, how he killed his wife, Stella Ubi, who was found dead with her body already decomposing by her brother, Emmanuel Solomon, in the couple’s Wuse 2, Abuja home last year. Emmanuel said he had gone in search of his sister after he failed to hear anything from her for some weeks and several calls to her mobile phone also failed to go through. The corpse of Stella, who only got married to the self-professed prophet some months ago, was found tied down, with face burnt and a native egg beside her head on the first day of the year. The apartment was securely locked and the door had to be broken by the deceased’s brother, whose curiosity was further heightened by the offensive odour coming out of the house. There was an immediate suspicion that she may have been killed for ritual purposes by her husband, more so that the prophet had disappeared, leading to the suspicion that he might have had a hand in the murder of his wife, thus, the FCT Police Command began a manhunt for the prophet, who was eventually arrested in Kogi State early this week. Haruna John, FCT’s Commissioner of Police, told P.M. News that on interrogation, the prophet, who claimed to have written over 300 books, said he committed the gruesome murder around five O’clock on the date of the incident. He also said the accused led a team of detectives to the couple’s Wuse apartment, where he showed them a cutlass and hammer he used for the ignoble act. The itinerant prophet, however, told journalists when he was paraded on Wednesday, that he killed his wife because his family wanted to use the deceased to kill him. He specifically accused Stella of attempting to poison him. The prophet, who bears a striking resemblance to the infamous Reverend King, then gave a graphic detail of the events and how he eventually killed Stella with the hammer and cutlass. “The issue of killing my wife began from our family members, who are cultists. They set her against me as I saw her in my dream, struggling to kill me. So, I woke up and the environment was changed. This was Satan and I began to struggle with her. In self defence, I went out, got a rope, overpowered her, tied her down and killed her with this hammer and cutlass,” the prophet said. P.M. News, however, gathered that the prophet had reflected his strange side when he refused to take photographs with members of the deceased’s family during their wedding. Stella was a staff of Nigeria Investment Promotion Council before her death. http://www.thenewsng.com/modules/zmagazine/article.php?articleid=22149 |

One needs to appreciate how character is formed and how a productive life is shaped. So much has to do with family upbringing--the values, modeling of right living and respectful relationships, the nurturing of healthy self-esteem, and high expectations of each other among family members. Without these basics in place, lives can zip off into many unproductive and harmful directions. Unfortunately, I have realised that people's self esteem are destroyed from childhood. Have you ever compared a typical 10 year old american to a typical 10 year old in nigeria? You are resticted from taking part in life changing decisions, can't even voice your opinion cos the so-called elders are speaking, u are smacked and beating like an animal all in the name of discipline. Furthermore, U are made to serve your elder brothers and sisters. You are basically being trained to "shut up", these ridiculous "values" make u believe that what ever happens to u in life is already preset, "the kadara bullcrap" |
I have discovered that some folks just "go with the flow" claiming to be proud nigerians, The most shocking part of the whole thang is that they never seem to give sensible reasons for being proud nigerians, All u hear is ridiculous claim of fun, entertainment and , blah blah blha, nothing to really capture the mind of the reader(esp. a foreigner), so y'all mind telling me why y'all proud to be Nigerians? (5 good reasons plzz) , and lets see who is kidding who up in here |

He started askingg questions duringg lectures, fellowships, student meetings wiithout minding or fearing whatt people had to say about him.People laughed at him sometimes but it just didnt not bother him a bit.Teachers aand fellow students corrected him and he always took to correction DEmi begged his waay into rep. the class during iinter-class debates(other class members didntt want to facce the whole school, 4000 folks looking u, ,thats scary for a typical ss1 student).ss1C student could hardly watch Demii speak, iu ever had your heart beat so fast when someone uu know is giving a speak on stage? Demi improved and RIGHT there before our very eyes , started representing the school by the time he got too ss2.His english improved so much to the extent that other students felt inferor when speaking to him.His confidence grew more and more as he won more prices for the school(literary and debating society, folks that finished from the public schooll sys in ng understand).
