you said there is a shoot out between both parties ? are protesters supposed to be armed, if at all there was deployment of troop to that area it the order has to come from the executive as procedure requires, so its definitely between the federal govt and the Host community

The protesters are mainly women.
However, the youths gave them their support because there are outstanding issues concerning the school yet to be resolved

You probably do not know what dickson has been doing, and no one is sayin anything. Even the state Assembly members are quiet.
The crises all started when he built his own university at his hometown.

from what I understand, the state govt decided to drop lower level staff (cleaners etc which is reserved for host community indigenes) who had passed retirement age so as to be able to employ younger people with an agreement to pay three months salary upfront but the people have refused this plan by the govt which has led to this violence

I only posted what's on ground at the moment.
Before now, there have been a lot of crises in the school, from increment in tuition fee to sacking of staffs (not retiring them).These are not the first set of staffs that have been sacked. The school has been down since April (while the school calendar is backward) and nothing has been done. Yet, his school University of Africa is going on.

There is currently a combact between indigenes of Amassoma (Niger Delta University host community) and cops.
It all started when some non-academic staffs were dropped by the governor which resulted in a serious protest by the women and the youths last week.
Report has it that the angry protesters shut the school gate thereby preventing movement in the school vicinity.
On Friday, 18th May, it was reported that resolutions were reached at a meeting of NDU governing council, traditional rulers and stakeholders of the community.
On one of the resolutions reached, it was said that the paramount rulers and the host community should ensure the reopening of the varsity gate shut by the protesters latest Saturday, 19th May but however, the gate was still locked as of Sunday, 20th May.
Report has it that cops were deployed to the community in the early hours of Tuesday, 22nd May, which is today, they reopened the gate and surrounded the school vicinity.
However, the angry youths of the community with war songs chased the cops and shut the gate again.
Report has it that more cops has been deployed to the community and there have been a sporadic shoot out between the two parties.

It's so unfortunate that the state Assembly can't do or say anything due to the level of corruption. Everyone is under the control of the clueless state governor. No politician seems to care for the students. Even the IYC that was supposed to fight for the students are fighting against them.. It is just too bad.

Angry protesters have blocked all major roads leading to the Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma,Bayelsa State. The angry protesters – comprising the host community, the staff of the Niger Delta University, including cleaners and gardeners, have locked all offices and also blocked the main entrance to the institution as some were seen with fetish items while laying ”curses” on Bayelsa state governor.
They are said to be protesting against the administration of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson over an alleged marginalization of the people of Amassoma, and that they want the whole world to know that the ongoing civil service reforms being carried out in the NDU by the state government is mainly targeted at the people of Amassoma Community.
The protesters said the NDU will not be opened for academic activities until the state government reverses its harsh decisions concerning the workers, and they have also proclaimed that the entire community, mostly the women, will not go to the bush for seven days.
They said they will not relent until the state government reverses its decision.

This is arrant nonsense. He is talking about cultism when he is not doing anything for the youths. He is making life difficult for the citizens. The state owned school (NDU) has not been on session (While the school is backward) since April due to students protest as a result of hike in tuition fee, and the conditions given to students to pay and complete their fees within the 1st week after resumption. Yet, he still owe salaries and he keep sacking workers everyday.
Tell me what you expect the youths to do when you're depriving them of their right and making everything difficult to them.
