Politics / Anambra Politicians Go Into Hiding As IPOB Unleashes Terror by mrakeli62: 6:14am On Oct 04, 2021
There is palpable tension in Anambra State as a result of the widespread violence recorded recently in the build-up to the November governorship election in the state.

While many people see the killings and attacks witnessed in the state as politically motivated; others believe they are being perpetrated by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The IPOB has been on rampage not just in Anambra State, but across the South East geopolitical zone.

The agitation for an independent state, Biafra, championed by IPOB, has led to killings and destruction in the South East region.

IPOB’s security arm, Eastern Security Network, had been fingered in the killings of security operatives and series of attacks on government institutions, especially police stations and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the zone.

Akelicious reports that few weeks to the November 6 governorship elections in Anambra State, many politicians have gone into hiding as a result of the activities of the rampaging assailants in the state.

All branded political parties vehicles are off the roads and some have removed the branding of their cars.

Also, those driving flashy cars, especially Hilux and Sienna vehicles, face the risk of being attacked and have therefore pulled them off the streets.

The latest of the attacks happened on Friday when a policeman and the driver of a federal lawmaker were killed; while a police station was set on fire.

The armed men attacked the convoy of the lawmaker representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chris Emeka Azubogu.

Azubogu, who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) a few days before the incident, was not in the convoy when the assailants struck.

Two days before the attack, seven persons, including, Dr Chike Akunyili, widower of the Late Dr Dora Akunyili, a former Director-General of the National Agency for Food Administration and Drug Control (NAFDAC), were killed in broad daylight in Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The dethroned traditional ruler of Mkpunando Aguleri, Alex Edozieuno, had been murdered weeks before the killing of Akunyili.

Edozieuno was killed along Ezu Bridge, Otuocha in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

Andy Uba, the governorship candidate of the APC in the state, had, on Saturday, suspended the proposed flag-off of his campaign owing to the killings.

As of yesterday, no political activity was taking place in the state barely 33 days to the gubernatorial election.

The situation has remained so tensed that banners and billboards bearing campaign messages have been pulled down; while branded campaign vehicles are hardly seen in the streets.

Also, the Nigerian Coat of Arms and flags have been removed in some public and government buildings for fear of attack by gunmen.

All Nigerian flags in banks, hotels and other places have been removed in obedience to the IPOB’s directive.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Tony Olofu, had assured residents of the renewed commitment of the command to consolidating on the gains in crime prevention and restoration of law and order in the state.

He reassured on efforts towards improving the safety and security of lives and property of law-abiding citizens in the state.

In the statement, the Commissioner of Police said on September 30, 2021, some yet-to-be-identified heavily armed men stormed the Ajali Divisional Headquarters of the state and fired sporadically at police personnel on duty. He said they were, however, promptly engaged by the police officers and they fled the scene.

He said two police personnel and a civilian sustained gunshot injuries, while a patrol vehicle was burnt and the police station was partly touched.

A joint team of police and military personnel trailed the fleeing attackers and intercepted them along Oko Ajali road before though they escaped with gunshot injuries. The operatives recovered a Highlander jeep and two motorcycles.

He called on citizens in the state to be calm, patriotic and go about their lawful businesses as the police, the military and other security agencies are already rejigging strategies to contain the situation and prevent any further threats to lives and property in the state.

He vowed that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts would not go unpunished.
He vowed that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts would not go unpunished.

However, Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has placed a N20 million bounty on killers of Dr Chike Akunyili, and others killed in the state by hoodlums.

He said: “To reinforce our commitment and seriousness on this issue, I on behalf of the state government, wish to announce a N20,000,000 reward for any useful information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks on our state. The people behind this must be unmasked and brought to book.”

He urged citizens to report to security or vigilante personnel, “so we can deal with this monster, once and for all.”

Obiano warned “all those promoting and participating in the violent attacks to leave our state or pay a high price as we will definitely catch up with them.”

He directed “all security agencies to step up and confront this monster ravaging the land.”

“I have charged everyone involved in the security architecture of Anambra State to take very seriously, this threat to our livelihood and boldly rise to confront same,” he said.

He also urged traditional rulers, presidents general, clergymen, vigilante groups and all leadership structures to take responsibility in conjunction with the police, military and other law enforcement agencies and work to restore order without delay.

In a fresh attack yesterday, suspected IPOB militants attacked the offices of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Nnewi, Anambra State.

While a source said two passersby were killed, another source said nobody was killed during the attacks on the DSS and FRSC.

The gunmen, according to eyewitnesses, drove from Owerri Road in four Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), stopped at Emecourt Road Junction where they fired some gunshots, which made passersby scamper for safety, before they headed to the offices.

Akelicious gathered that they later drove through Nkwo Triangle Roundabout and moved towards Nnobi Road.

The sources also said a military armoured vehicle later surfaced and drove round town passing through Emecourt Road, but there was no exchange of fire as the military did not meet the gunmen.

The State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that there was an incident in Nnewi, but refused to state the offices involved.

He said: “At about 2pm, of 3rd October 2021, the command received a distress call of a fire incident in Nnewi. The police operatives are currently on ground and the area has since been cordoned off. Further details shall be communicated,” he said.

Politics / We 've No Hands In Killings, Destructions In Biafra Land - IPOB by mrakeli62: 5:24am On Oct 04, 2021
Our Philosophy is Peaceful, We 've No Hands in Killings, Destructions in Biafra Land - IPOB

We are the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by our great leader Mazi Nnamdi KANU. Our attention has been drawn to the fallacious and ridiculous statement from the most hopeless man in Alaigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, asking IPOB to stop killing our people. We see this statement as that of a drowning man who wants to grab anything to stay afloat.

Nnia Nwodo is only seeking relevance and feels the only way to get relevance is to make statements about IPOB. He has come again. Nwodo should not forget what he did against IPOB when he was President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. It is like his money has finished and he expects his slaves master to send him more money by attacking IPOB.

This old man is confused and will remain confused till his death. We have questions to ask Nnia Nwodo over his ranting: Has he investigated those who attacked Ajali Police station and confirmed they were IPOB? Has he also investigated who attacked the convoy of Hon Chris Azubogu when he was coming back from Awka to Nnewi, where he dumped PDP for APC, and confirmed it was IPOB? Instead of this fulani stooge to caution politicians like him, he is busy chasing shadows and accusing IPOB . Our philosophy is peaceful restoration of Biafra. We have no hands in the senseless killings in Biafra land but Nwodo and traitors like him will want to link us with these atrocities just to impress their Fulani slavemasters.

It seems Nnia Nwodo wants to use IPOB to be relevant again? Since he left as President General of Ohaneze he has not been relevant for long. He wants to use IPOB like Joe Igbokwe and Osita Okechukwu, DG of VON, to be relevant and attract sympathy from APC party. Shameless people in display! Fulani in charge of APC and in control of Nigeria government can never give them recognition, no matter what they do.

We wish to thank all those that complied with our directive to sit-at-home on 1st October, 2021. We thank you all for your compliance, and for rejecting Nigeria and her tribalalistic Fulani-controlled government in Abuja.

We equally appreciate and commend those institutions and churches including companies who on their own, dismantled Nigeria flags in their premises. Thank you for your cooperation. IPOB will never relent in our resolve to restore Biafra.

Any institution, company, hotel, etc that is yet to comply with this directive should stop waiting for us to remove the flags for them. They should simply do the needful because disobedience is not a good option.

We restate our belief in peaceful restoration of Biafra. IPOB has no hands in the senseless attacks going on in our territory. We are freedom seekers and we remain peaceful in our pursuit for freedom of Biafra. We have nothing to do with the zoo politics.

COMRADE EMMA POWERFUL MEDIA AND PUBLICITY SECRETARY FOR IPOB.

Politics / NASS Member, Others Financing Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho –buhari by mrakeli62: 5:21am On Oct 01, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari has restated his commitment to the unity of the country.

In his nationwide broadcast early this morning to mark Nigeria’s 61st independent anniversary, he said the resolve for a peaceful, united and one Nigeria remains resolute and unwavering warning that his “government was ready to arrest and prosecute all persons inciting violence through words or action.”
He also said ongoing investigations on separatists agitators, Nnamdi Kalu and Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho), arrested recently, have revealed that a certain member of the National Assembly was among their financiers.

“Nigeria is for all of us. Its unity is not negotiable. And its ultimate success can only be achieved if we all come together with a common goal of having peace and prosperity for our nation. We shall continue to work on dialogue based solutions to address legitimate grievances. But we remain ready to take decisive actions against secessionist agitators and their sponsors who threaten our national security.

“The recent arrests of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Adeyemo, and the ongoing investigations being conducted have revealed certain high-profile financiers behind these individuals. We are vigorously pursuing these financiers, including one identified as a serving member of the National Assembly. This is a clear example of how people abandon their national leadership positions for their selfish gains. Instead of preaching unity, they are funding and misleading our youth to conduct criminal acts that sometimes lead to unfortunate and unnecessary loss of lives and property.”

Buhari also granted the conditional lifting of the ban on social media platform, Twitter, to allow citizens continue the use of the platform for business and positive engagements.

While acknowledging the country’s socio-economic and security challenges, the president said no government since 1999 could match what his administration had done in the last six years to put Nigeria back on track

Below are excerpts of the speech: “It is with full gratitude to God that today, we celebrate Nigeria’s sixty first Independence Anniversary. For 1st of October 1960 to happen, all hands were on deck. East, West, North all came together to celebrate freedom. Today should not only serve as a reminder of the day the British handed over the reins of power to Nigerians, but also unified Nigerians from all ethnic groups, religions and regions. Today, despite the challenges we face, most Nigerians still maintain the spirit of 1st October. That positive outlook and determination to make Nigeria a peaceful and prosperous nation. It is due to this collective attitude that Nigeria doggedly continues to remain a united and indivisible nation. Fellow Nigerians, the past eighteen months have been some of the most difficult periods in the history of Nigeria. Since the civil war, I doubt whether we have seen a period of more heightened challenges than what we have witnessed in this period. Our original priorities for 2020 were to continue stabilising our economy following the deep recession while restoring peace in areas confronted with security challenges. But the COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating impact on all nations meant we needed to shift gears and re-strategise. Nigerians came together as one to fight against COVID-19. It is this attitude and by the special grace of God, we continue to survive the pandemic as a nation and indeed, provide leadership and example at regional and international levels.

“The doomsday scenario predicted for our country never came. Even as the Delta variant continues to spread, we have built the capacity we need to respond now and into the future. I will therefore appeal to Nigerians not to take COVID lightly, adhere to public health and social measures, put your mask on and get vaccinated. We can control this pandemic, but it requires effort on everybody’s part. The investments we made in response to COVID-19 will also serve our country to tackle any future disease outbreaks or pandemics.

“ I have directed the Ministries of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Health, Education and Science and Technology to work with Nigerian and International pharmaceutical companies and research organisations to enhance Nigeria’s domestic pharmaceutical capacity. Already, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority is raising a $200 million fund for this initiative that will complement the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ongoing N85 billion Healthcare Sector Research and Development Intervention Scheme to support local researchers in the development of vaccines and drugs to combat communicable and non-communicable diseases, including COVID-19.”

“Similarly, on our approach to food security, I am proud to announce Nigeria has commenced its journey to pharmaceutical independence. This journey, which will take years to achieve but will ultimately result in Nigerian based companies developing the Active Pharmaceutical substances and competence needed for us to make our own drugs and vaccines. As our economy continues to open after the COVID-19 related lockdowns, we have also seen the resurgence of insecurity in certain parts of the country.

“In the last four months, the gallant men and women of the military and security agencies have made tremendous progress in addressing these new security challenges.

“We are taking the fight to our enemies from all angles and we are winning. In the North East region alone, over eight thousand Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered.”

Politics / 2023 Presidency: S-east Leaders Drag Buhari, Federal Character, Others To Court by mrakeli62: 7:07am On Sep 30, 2021
Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, some political leaders from the South-East have dragged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Character Commission to court.

Also joined as defendants are the Federal Character Commission, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The plaintiffs are before a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu seeking an order of court to compel the respondents to zone the presidential ticket to the South-East.

Akelicious reports that the suit was filed by Rev. Okechukwu Obioha, the National Coordinator, South-East for President 2023 and some other members of the PDP, APC and other citizens of Nigeria from the South-East zone.

They want the court to compel PDP and APC to zone their presidential candidates in the 2023 general elections to the South-East zone for equity, justice and fairness.

Among other things, the plaintiffs are asking the court to determine “whether having regard to the extant provisions of Sections 14 (3) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) and Section 4(1)(b) of the Federal Character Commission (Establishment Act) of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, is the defendant not mandated to ensure and compel the 4th and 5th defendants to zone the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the South-East zone in 2023 as a way of ensuring proportional sharing of the office.”

They also sought an order restraining the INEC “from accepting, recognizing or publishing the presidential nomination or candidatures of any of the PDP and APC from the forthcoming 2023 general elections except such a nomination or candidate emanates from persons from South-East zone, Federal Republic of Nigeria and of no other.”

Politics / Lawmaker Begs Secondus To Reverse Senate Bye-election Disqualification by mrakeli62: 5:30am On Sep 01, 2020
The member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe has appealed to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reverse his disqualification to contest the party’s primary for the Cross River North senatorial bye-election.

In a petition he submitted at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, he appealed to the party boss to use his office “to redress and reverse the politically motivated injustice done to me after my clearance.”

He said he had complied with the party guidelines in the purchase of nomination and expression of interest forms and had been duly screened, cleared by the party’s screening committee for the election and consequently, issued a clearance certificate.
He said: “Strangely, however, the appeal panel, ostensibly acting on a script claimed to have received a petition from one Pius Awah and on that basis purportedly disqualified me from contesting the primary election.

“May I quickly add that the ground of my purported disqualification is not only absurd but also a gross violation of both the party’s constitution and the guidelines for the conduct of the primary election and a decision taken in bad faith against me.”

He pointed out that whereas going by the party’s constitution, only an aggrieved aspirant can write a petition to the appeal panel, the person that wrote against him was not an aspirant and thus, has no competence to complain about him.

Jarigbe urged the party National Chairman to uphold his clearance by the screening committee, reject and reverse “the malicious, contrived and ultra vires” appeal panel report and to direct the panel to retract the alleged defamation of his person.

Politics / Fed Govt To Launch New Culture Policy, Establish Endowment Fund For Arts by mrakeli62: 6:19am On Oct 07, 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has revealed the Federal Government’s plan to launch a National Policy on Culture as well as National Policy on Tourism.

Speaking in Lagos yesterday at a media briefing to unveil his ministry’s agenda for the culture and tourism sector, he reiterated the government’s determination to lift the creative industry and make the country a tourism hub. While reeling out his agenda to build on the gains of the past four years, he said plans were on to create the necessary legal framework for the sector.

The Guardian gathered that there was an attempt at reviewing the culture policy in 2008, some 21 years after it was formulated, but the exercise came rather late. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) guidelines, a cultural policy shall be reviewed at least once in eight years. So, it was more than twice a belated exercise. Also, due to the restricted circulation of the text, it wasn’t addressed to the Nigerian people as sovereign owners.

This contrasted sharply with the case in 1988 when culture administrators mobilised universities, journalists, trade unionists, civil society representatives, among others, to make their input to the implementation strategies. But the belated 2008 exercise wasn’t like that. It was handled rather perfunctorily, without any serious demonstration of commitment. The document was not given the legal teeth to make it justiceable.

Mohammed noted that the ministry had finalised work on the Motion Picture Council of Nigeria (MOPICON) Bill, which will be submitted to the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“The plan is to create a proper regulatory environment for the sub-sector that has put Nigeria’s name on the global map, thus attracting the much-needed investment to the sector,” he said.Aside the MOPICON Bill, the minister noted that plans were equally underway to create a legal framework for the establishment of the arts endowment fund. While reviewing the sector in the past four years, he said, “The National Summit for Culture and Tourism would now be a yearly affair, starting from the first quarter of 2020.”

In the same vein, the minister said he would “ensure a regularly meeting of the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT) to catalyse the growth of tourism. We plan at least three meetings a year.”The ministry, he said, would organise a regional summit on culture and tourism, starting next year to work with other countries in the West Africa sub-region to foster development of the sector.Aside finalising work on and launching the country’s National Festival Calendar this year, which is geared towards attracting more tourists, there are plans to get more “sites in Nigeria inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.”

…accuses in-laws of hiring thugs to beat him

Tragedy struck in Ovia North East Local Government Area near Benin, the Edo State capital, as a man identifies as Mr. Edoghogho Omorogbe, aged 44, has been arrested by the police for killing three members of his family. The suspect was nabbed by operatives of the state command for killing his mother-in-law, sister-inlaw and a six-month-old baby.

The names of the victims were given as Mrs. Alice Omorogbe (52), Mrs. Blessing Efe (25) and baby Osarumwense. Edoghogho was said to have killed the victims on September 17, at their residence at Iguadolor Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state. A two-year-old girl inside the room at the time of attack was, however, spared.

The mutilated bodies of the victims were discovered the following morning by residents of the area. In his confession, Edoghogho said he killed his in-laws because they always hired boys to beat him anytime he had issues with his wife. He said: “I am a tipper driver but since the rains started I was doing menial jobs. I killed them out of annoyance because my mother in-law used boys to beat me up. She would say I am talking to my wife.

If I quarrel with my wife, she will send boys to beat me up. “I didn’t know that the cutlass will hit the baby. After I killed them, I ran away. Later I came out and went to tell my father what I did. I have not seen my wife since I killed her mother and sister.” However, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, could not be reached for confirmation of the incident yesterday, but a top police officer who pleaded not to be mentioned, said investigation into the matter had since commenced.

Politics / Gov-ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s 100 Days In Office by mrakeli62: 4:56am On Sep 14, 2019
After 2019 general elections were concluded, and results collated and announced, winners emerged, while aggrieved losers headed to the election petition tribunals to ventilate their concerns. But one phenomenon that political pundits failed to take cognizance of, in their follow-up commentaries, was the landmark victory of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State. The euphoria here is not that the governor won his second term. Ordinarily, anyone who has followed Enugu politics in the last four years would not have expected him to have a challenge getting his second term mandate.

What went unnoticed in the corridors of analysts was that he scored 449,935 votes – 95% of the total votes cast, with the second runner up—the APC gubernatorial candidate, coming a distant second by mere 10,423 votes. This electoral feat is unprecedented in the annals of our political history. No sitting governor in Nigeria has beaten his challengers in an election by that margin of the votes cast. Not even governors of the ruling APC, who had at their disposal what has been baptized “federal might” in the nation’s political lexicon, could win such popular mandate across a state. It evinced the fact that no rigging sophistication cum machinery could have won such vote of confidence from Enugu populace other than excellent performance and good governance.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was sworn in amidst heightened expectations because to whom much is given, much is expected. Aware of the overwhelming faith reposed in his leadership by Enugu residents, the governor hit the ground running. The flight of governance took off for a determined destination of repositioning the Coal city. Incidentally, an unforeseen turbulence of insecurity pummeled the state in particular, and South-East in general. News of kidnapping-for-ransom, isolated killings and vicious attacks ravaged the state like wide fire. Hitherto, peaceful and secured hub of Eastern region became harbinger of unscrupulous and barbaric activities of men of the underworld.

Governor Ugwuanyi, unique in his style of governance, refused to play to the gallery. He resisted the temptation of blame game, rebuffed the bandwagon to stereotype herdsmen with the insecurity challenge in the state. Instead, he went for solutions rather than pointing accusing fingers at anyone or group. Ugwuanyi began his troubleshooting of the escalated insecurity by rallying all relevant stakeholders, especially in the security sector. He engaged security agencies, ethno-religious leaders, and community stakeholders in the state to find lasting solution to the challenge. Amidst criticisms, he never lost focus. Rather, he viewed it as motivation to show leadership at a trying time. He neither wavered nor slumbered—he rose to the occasion.

Not being directly in control of security agencies in the state, albeit bearing the ceremonial title of “Chief Security Officer”, Governor Ugwuanyi lobbied powers that be at Abuja for overhauling of security apparatus in the state. These decisive actions necessitated the change of police commissioner and rejigging of security operations in the state. In his own capacity as number one citizen of the state, the government engaged the services of 1,700 forest guards, whose defined responsibility would be to assist in curbing the menace of kidnapping and other criminal activities, which usually happens along the bush (forests) pathways, highways and rural areas.

The newly employed forest guards were adequately equipped with over 260 security vehicles, motorcycles, etc., for effective community policing. Outside the deployment of new police commissioner to the state, the governor took a further step to appoint former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ogbonnaya Onovo as security consultant to the state government. Even the governor’s hard critics will not fault the wisdom in seeking the profound counsels of security experts who are indigenous to the state. The present administration in the state has the penchant for consulting security experts before taking decision bordering on security would be reached.

Governor Ugwuanyi has reiterated severally that being a governor does not automatically confer on someone “grandmaster of wisdom”, who has monopoly of ideas. This is the ideological tenor serving as catalyst to the open system/diplomatic governance being ran by the governor. He has not failed to carry everyone along in decision-making process since becoming governor. In furtherance of this and seeing that insecurity is not restricted to Enugu alone, the governor has galvanized other governors of South-East states to rob minds, mobilize resources and form a formidable synergy to ensure that the tide of insecurity in the region is not only curtailed but nipped in the bud. Development does not thrive in the face of insecurity.

The first 100 days of Ugwuanyi’s second tenure has not been a tea party. Arguably, it has been one of the toughest periods since he became governor: not even his first three months as first term governor was this hectic and challenging, simply as a result of sudden rise in security crisis in the state. Enugu State is traditionally and culturally known as a peaceful state. Any leader that knows his onions would be as worried and concerned as the governor was, which saw him visiting most of the hideouts of kidnappers in the thick forests. As soon as they were discovered, they ignited his prompt responses that have started yielding positives today.

The good news here is that Governor Ugwuanyi neither allowed himself to be distracted nor allowed governance to lose its thrust. He remained committed to the ultimate goal of exiting the helm of authority with enduring legacy of infrastructural strides. The first 100 days of his second term mandate has seen a reinvigorated effort in opening up of rural areas via laudable good road networks. He has personally supervised ongoing projects to ensure that Enugu residents and taxpayers are getting value for their resources entering the state coffers, through federal allocations and Internally Generated Revenues (IGR). The state-owned higher institutions have also received infrastructural boost within the governor’s 100 days in office alongside internal roads of Enugu metropolis. It is a sign of better things to come.

Politics / 9.2m SIM Cards Face Deactivation by mrakeli62: 6:03am On Sep 13, 2019
About 9.2 million telephone lines discovered to have been improperly registered are going to be deactivated by service providers in the country. The Minister of Communications, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, yesterday in Abuja, ordered the telecommunications operators (MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9Mobile) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that the Subscribers Identification Numbers (SIM) cards are removed from the country’s telecommunications radar until the owners present themselves for proper documentation.
An industry source told The Guardian that Pantami gave the directive while hosting the executive councils of both the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), who paid a congratulatory visit to him in his office.According to the source, who was privy to the meeting, SIMs that were improperly registered will be deactivated. He quoted Pantami as saying that the ministry gave the order towards bridging the gap in the country’s security apparatus, and most importantly curtail the growing influence of kidnappers in the country who have been using different SIM cards to perpetrate abductions and killings of innocent Nigerians.

According to him, Pantami claimed that the National Security Adviser is interested in the matter “and ordered that the minister should act urgently before the kidnappers take over the country.”It was learnt that during the monthly SIM audit, which the operators usually submit to the NCC, more than nine million cards were discovered to have been improperly registered. “Some were registered without proper biometrics, no picture, no address, among others, and as such there should be urgent update on the lines.” Confirming the order in a statement, Uwa Suleiman, the spokesperson to the minister, said Pantami gave the directive to all the agencies and parastatals under his purview.

He said the NCC had submitted its baseline short-term performance targets report.“The report signed by the executive vice chairman of the commission contained precise figures of improperly registered SIM cards in use around the country. The commission in its report disclosed that an estimated 9.2 million SIM cards did not comply with the proper procedures of SIM registration. The investigation which was carried out at the behest of the minister, has exposed for the first time in the telecoms history of Nigeria, in precise detail, the magnitude of defaulters,” he stated.

Reacting to the report, the minister expressed concern over the security implication of the discovery and further directed that the telecoms regulator should, with immediate effect, ensure that all improperly registered numbers are duly re-registered. According to him, to ensure maximum compliance, Pantami has directed the NCC to ensure that all mobile network operators block all SIM cards that do not meet proper registration standards until users comply with the proper reregistration procedures.

“The security implication of this irregularity is too grave to be ignored and the Federal Ministry of Communications will not tolerate any actions or inactions that will compromise the nation’s security,” the statement reads.Already, before the directive, some of the operators had called out their subscribers to go and re-register their SIMs, while others had suspended services to some lines whose owners had failed to show up for regularisation of their SIMs.

The Guardian had reported in August that the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) were to go through another compliance audit of all SIM databases, which was going to be monitored strictly by the NCC. The specifications are prescribed in the Telephone Subscribers Registration Regulations and the Technical Standards and Specifications issued by the commission in 2011.

NCC had said that the SIM audit was without prejudice to the ongoing “backend verification and scrubbing” of SIM registration data already submitted to the commission by telecoms operators.

The Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Dr. Henry Nkemadu, told The Guardian in August that the commission had actually started SIM update of data with it.“The subscriber registration database is a veritable tool being used by security and law enforcement agencies in the detection and apprehension of criminal elements involved in heinous crimes like kidnapping, financial crimes, armed robberies, banditry and cattle rustling”.

According to Nkemadu, the first phase of the audit was carried out in 2011. “The security operatives can leverage easy access to the national telecoms network. As such, we (NCC) are determined to continue to ensure that all SIM cards are traceable to their real owners with the least effort.”Recalled that in 2015, about 10 million lines were also deactivated for the same offence, which eventually led to the fine of N1.04 trillion slammed on MTN for being in possession of huge defective SIM cards in the country.

Politics / Enugu Airport Ready Before Christmas -aviation Minister by mrakeli62: 8:32pm On Sep 12, 2019
The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has said that the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu, will be opened for local and international commercial flights before Christmas.

Speaking on Channels Television, the minister said that work was ongoing and if there was sufficient funding to complete repairs on the dilapidated runway, the Federal government would reopen it before Christmas.

“Work is ongoing. If everything is equal and we get all of the funding, we intend to reopen it before Christmas. Work does not necessarily mean the bringing of equipment into the airport to begin the reconstruction of that particular airport or runway; work entails the planning, mobilising people for work and the actual work itself. The planning is even more important than the work itself because when you plan very well, you succeed.

“This runway closed itself because it actually failed and we kept trying to get it to function very well but it kept failing on a daily basis. We were very afraid that what happened in Port Harcourt many years ago could happen on this runway because in Port Harcourt, it was failing and the then Ministry of Aviation was doing the best they could to keep the runway safe, but unfortunately, the runway started to fail like mad and when Air France landed, it got stuck. It took two years and a half to get the runway back to function properly.

“Every airport will have its maintenance programme with the facility management and then set things in place now so as to be able to do maintenance as at when due and if it needs total resurfacing and reconstruction , we would do all of that,” Sirika said.

Following regulatory framework to shut down the Akanu Ibiam airport, the Federal government announced in May that the airport would be closed and domestic flights would be diverted to Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri, while international flights would be diverted to Port Harcourt.

The Federal government through the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), issued a shutdown date on August 24, 2019, for rehabilitation of the runway and upgrade of its facilities to meet international standard.

Politics / Deploy Women To Fight Boko Haram, Aisha Buhari Charges Service Chiefs by mrakeli62: 8:02pm On Sep 12, 2019
The wife of the president, Mrs Aisha Buhari on Thursday charged authorities of the Nigerian Armed Forces to utilise the potentials of women in the military in their operations to address the nation’s security challenges.

She said insecurity in the country was still the way it was because the armed forces was yet to redefine the role of women and explore their potential for operational effectiveness.

Mrs Buhari, said injecting women in the theatre of operations had become necessary rather than restricting them to catering, finance, human resource, personnel, logistics and other support arms.

She noted that the insurgency war and other security operations embarked by the military in the country would have yielded better result if it had explored the potentials of women whom she said have patience, perseverance and passionate about their assigned tasks.

The wife of the president gave the charge at the opening of the Defence Headquarters maiden annual conference on women peace and security at the National Defence College, Abuja.

The one-day conference had as its theme “The imperative of gender mainstreaming in the Armed Forces for operational effectiveness.”

Represented by Dr Hajol Sani at the occasion, Mrs Buhari, said: “The security issues bedeviling our country still abound probably because we are yet to redefine the Armed Forces of Nigeria to explore the potential of women for operational effectiveness. Women possess the traits of patience, perseverance, and passion.

“There is a need for the reformulation of laws and policies that border on the inclusion of women in the strategic reformation of effective operational deployment.

“The wide margin and lack of flexibility in structures based on gender should be abridged.

“Let me at this outset state that I and a good number of Nigerian women regard ourselves as soldiers; this is because we are the protectors of the family and the home; these are our frontier and territories.”

She also said: “Nigeria – Africa as a continent is a male-dominated environment and so are the armed forces. Because of this chivalric dominance, the military is often hostile to women.

“Women do not adapt to the armed forces as easily as men die to their genetic make-up. Although this varies on individual basis, specific factors which include rejection, isolation and unhealthy attitudes from mainly the men. These factors are especially pronounced within the operational combatant sectors of the armed forces.

“These factors manifest in a number of ways including sexiest jokes and remarks as well as women not being taken seriously in operations. Gender stereotype against women is a potential threat to women’s advancement in the military.

“There are a good number of reported cases where women are prevented from participating in combat duties excluding pregnancy or maternity.

“Women are often restricted to careers within supportive mustering of military community suave as finance, human resources, personnel, logistics, medical services, welfare, etc. I join the military women to take vehement exception to such psychological oppression.

“In many careers as housewives or in the military, women have been recorded to put in more effort in a bid to establish their equality.”

To this end, she called for training and developmental opportunities specifically designed to support female personnel.

In his address on the occasion, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Gabriel Olonisakin, said the Nigerian Armed Forces has implemented various initiatives and policies to mainstream gender perspectives into the military having adopted the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 which calls on all member states to ensure that women and societal security needs are safeguarded through increased emphasis on prevention, protection and participation in military operations.

“Currently, the Armed Forces of Nigeria has attained 27.7 percent female participation in peacekeeping operations. This is higher than the UN recommendation of 17 percent.”

While noting that the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) has commenced training of female cadets as combatant officers, the CDS, said: “These women are given equal opportunities like their male counterparts including commanding major combat units and flying fighter jets for the NAF. The Nigerian Navy has also deployed women as sailors and for other key aspects such as ship maintenance,” he said

Also speaking, Defence Minister, Major Gen Bashir Salihu, who was represented by the Deputy Director, Education, Mrs Ene Ujah, promised to project the needed cordial relationship between the ministry and the military to promote peace and security of the country.

The minister described the conference as apt and timely, given the strategic significance of women military in the operational efficiency of the armed forces.

Politics / Buhari Vows To Tackle 77% Rise In Crude Oil Theft by mrakeli62: 6:29am On Sep 11, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari, has vowed to bring crude oil theft to its kneels by looking at practical solutions to the menace.
The President gave the assurance at the ongoing 24th World Energy Congress (WEC) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.
Buhari’s pledge may not be unconnected with the 77 per cent rise in oil pipeline vandalism as contained in the June monthly report of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with 106 pipeline breaches in June, up from just 60 in May.
Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipreye Sylva, Buhari said the Federal Government would deliver Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) on at least four key projects within the nation’s oil and gas industry by the end of last quarter this year.
He said his vision was to bequeath a vibrant petroleum industry that will guarantee long term strategic investments and prosperity for Nigerians.
“My plan is to ensure that during my tenure, four Final Investment Decisions (FIDs) are taken. I am sure that within the next quarter, we should be able to conclude on some of these FIDs so as to grow the industry,” the Minister stated.
The Minister also highlighted gas development as part of government priority to fast track the industrialization drive of the country.
“As you are aware, we are focusing on the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline project which will address some of our power issues and encourage the setting up of local industries and businesses along different areas in Nigeria.”
Sylva also shed more light on the imperative of rehabilitating the nation’s refineries, saying that it was unsustainable for Nigeria to continue to import petroleum products.
The Minister further stated that while private investment in the refining sector is encouraged, Government should focus more on the repair of its existing refineries.
“People are talking about modular refineries, we know that modular refineries are part of the solution but they can only be part of the solution and not the solutions themselves. So, we are going to try to encourage modular refineries but before that, we are going to really focus on repairing the existing refineries to ensure that we are back on stream very shortly,” Sylva added.
He maintained that government was also looking at the issue of reducing the cost of production through robust engagement with the International Oil Companies (IOCs) towards getting best value for all stakeholders.
According to the Minister, Nigeria needed to lend its voice to global energy fora as they remain some of the best platforms where major decisions that impact the global energy landscape are taken.
Meanwhile, Nigerian oil exports, reports say, is increasingly heading to Los Angeles refineries due to limited pipeline link from Shale production but report fears the favourable export window may soon shut
The report said that Nigeria’s oil earlier displaced by U.S. shale, has found an unlikely new outlet this year to the coast of the continental United States that is farthest from the Nigeria’s shores.
The shale boom has upended the global market, turning the United States from a keen buyer of Nigerian oil to an aggressive competitor.

Politics / Minimum Wage: FG Postpones Negotiation Meeting With Unions by mrakeli62: 11:52am On Sep 10, 2019
Negotiations between the Federal Government and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) on the new minimum wage has again been rescheduled for Sept. 16.

Government and the JNPSNC were initially billed to meet on Sept. 4, but the meeting was suspended.

Mr Alade Lawal, JNPSNC Secretary-General, confirmed to NAN on Tuesday in Lagos that the meeting was rescheduled at the instance of the officials.

The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress have been in conflict over the implementation of the new minimum wage which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on April 18.

Negotiation between the government and the JNPSNC, representing labour in the technical committee set up to negotiate the consequential adjustment of workers’ salaries as a result of the new minimum wage, had broken down due to unresolved differences in their proposals.

While the Federal Government proposed 9.5 per cent salary increase for employees on grade levels 07 to 14 and five per cent for those on grade levels 15 to 17, labour is demanding 30 per cent increase for officers on grade levels 07 to 14 and 25 per cent increase for grade levels 15 to 17.

President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, had told journalists that the congress would support any position taken by the JNPSNC on the new national minimum wage.

Politics / FG Has Spent N2b On Projects In Cross River, Says Rep by mrakeli62: 5:59am On Sep 10, 2019
The Federal Government has sunk over N2 billion in various developmental projects in Cross River State. Giving account of his stewardship in Calabar yesterday, Eta Mbora, representing Calabar/Odukpani Constituency in the House of Representatives, told newsmen that the Federal Government had been intervening in various projects he attracted to his constituency and the annual strategic empowerment programme targeted at job creation.

He said, “The projects estimated at over N2 billion include the four-kilometre Akim Akim road terminating at the river, rural electrification scheme at Okut Ikang, another four-kilometre road network at Obot Okor to enhance evacuation of farm produce, and the Ikoneto embankment in Odukpani to curtail landslide.”

Others, according to him, include Nasarawa Health Centre and several solar-powered boreholes in the constituency. He assured that the projects would be ready for commissioning soon. However, we gathered that the state government is indebted to the tune of N241 billion.

The development might have been the reason the state never had a detailed budget and sector-by-sector breakdown in the public glare between 2015 and 2019.In the period under review, the state had budgeted N303 billion in 2016, N707 billion in 2017, N1.3 trillion in 2018 and N1.4 trillion in 2019.
According to 2018 report of Economic Confidential, the state’s financial burden stood at N235.9 billion, with $276.2 million foreign debt and N167.9 billion domestic debt.

But latest reports put the debt at N240.9 billion, thus shifting the domestic debt from N167.9 billion to N172.9 billion.Governor Ben Ayade, who presented the 2019 ‘Budget of Quabalistic Densification’ to the House of Assembly, said the budget was spiritual and would need fervent prayers to enable the state implement it successfully. He disclosed that the state was spending N1.8 billion monthly to service debts, and that the performance of last year’s ‘Budget of Kinetic Crystallisation’ was up to 74 per cent.

According to his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Christian Ita, an average of N2 billion gets to the state monthly, much of which was spent on salary. He did not see anything wrong in government borrowing to pay pensions and gratuities. On average of N2 billion monthly, The Guardian observed that over N108 billion might have entered the state between 2015 and 2019 as allocation from the federation account.

By the time former Governor Liyel Imoke left office in May 2015, his former Special Adviser on Debt Management, Mrs. Francesca Effiom, put the state’s debt profile at N123.9 billion, external debts of N13.5 billion domestic debts put at N110.4 billion.

Politics / 2020: Obaseki May Defect To PDP by mrakeli62: 5:31am On Sep 07, 2019
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki’s second term bid might see the light of day if the rumours making the rounds in Benin City about his alleged plan defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are anything to go by. Recent romance with big PDP chieftains in the state will further attest to the fact that the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM), top members of the APC ruling party in Edo, are not willing to make peace with Obaseki, hence the governor, who is popularly known as ‘wake and see’ is considering the PDP option. Fillers reaching Saturday Telegraph revealed that Obaseki and the PDP state Chairman, Chief Dan. Orbih, are currently in the US, allegedly holding meetings over his defection. It will also be recalled that the Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, recently held a closed door meeting with Obaseki shortly before the governor travelled to the US. A PDP source, who is privy to this, said:

“As I speak with you now from New York in the US, I want to say that I’m very happy with the current romance between Obaseki and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State. “Edo State does not belong to a particular group of persons or politicians, we are all stakeholders in the state, and we will support a governor that mean well for the poor masses. I would advise governor Obaseki to be focused because I can see that people who do not want good life for the poor masses of Edo people are bent on ensuring that Obaseki does not return to the government house in 2020. “As a concerned citizen of Edo State, I want to say that we are ready to back Obaseki if he gets a ticket from another political platform.

“Greedy Edo politicians are not happy with him simply because it is no longer business as usual where they pack the people’s money to foreign banks abroad, thereby impoverishing the people and making life miserable for them. With the current move by Obaseki, I’m very sure that Edo electorate, who voted massively for him in 2016, will come out in their thousands to vote for him again.” However, efforts to get Obaseki’s media aide, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, comment on this new development proved abortive as at the time of filling this report.

Politics / Why Nigeria Can’t Sever Relationship With South Africa – Onyeama by mrakeli62: 3:15pm On Sep 06, 2019
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama on Friday explained reasons why Nigeria cannot sever diplomatic relationship with South Africa despite Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in that country.

Onyeama, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Diaspora disclosed that such action would not be in the interest of the nation, disclosing that currently, there were over 800, 000 Nigerians legally living in the South African country.

According to him, any attempt by the country to cut diplomatic relationship with South Africa would greatly affect Nigerians and their huge investment there, adding that special envoys dispatched to Johannesburg by President Muhammadu Buhari would return to Nigeria on Saturday (tomorrow ).

The minister explained that their report would guide the Nigerian leader to take a decisive action in the overall interest of the country, saying that Nigeria would consider other options apart from diplomatic ties severance, to resolve the unfortunate development.

“We are not thinking to the stage of diplomatic ties called off. There are various options. We are not by any means at a stage where we are breaking diplomatic relations with South Africa. We just met with the senate committee to review the situation with regards to South Africa and we looked at all the possible options we analysed the possible causes and agreed on a road map going forward.

“Part of that road map on the executive side Mr. President has dispatched a special envoy to South Africa who would be holding discussion with the South African government at the very highest level. He (leader of the envoy) should be back tomorrow (Saturday), that will now give the government the basis for further action. In the mean time, if the government is very much on top of the situation,” he told newsmen after meeting with the Senate Committee led by Senator Bashir Ajibola.

“We know for a fact that no Nigerian life has been lost so we are extremely concern now to ensure that there will be adequate compensation for property that have been damaged. We know that a Nigerian Airline is putting a plane at the disposal of most Nigerians that wish to take the opportunity to leave South Africa, this is purely voluntary, but we are particularly determined to particularly make sure that this crisis does not re-occur,” he added in a report by PUNCH.

Politics / Lagos Records Over 70% Of Nigeria’s Vehicular Traffic by mrakeli62: 4:38am On Sep 02, 2019
Lagos State records more than 70 percent of Nigeria’s vehicular traffic, in spite of its small landmass. The Federal Controller of Works in the state, Adedamola Kuti, made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday.
Kuti said the traffic situation was a major challenge to road rehabilitation in the state, Nigeria’s commercial centre. He called on the motoring public to cooperate with contractors handling road projects to enable timely completion of the projects.

He said: “There is no alternative to having a motorable road; we realise that many times it is the road we want to fix that motorists have to pass through. Managing traffic to allow road rehabilitation is a problem for us; we appeal to the public to realise that there is no gain without pain.

“We appeal to motorists in Lagos to cooperate with us and with traffic management agencies during road rehabilitation. If vehicles are diverted to another route during road rehabilitation; we urge motorists to please cooperate; it may be inconvenient but the situation will not be forever.”

The controller said it was essential to making roads better for the citizens. He urged media organisations to help to educate the public on the need for the cooperation, saying that the Federal Government prioritised infrastructure development and needed public support.

He said: “Where we need to work at night, we have been doing that. For example, the entire surfacing of the Third Mainland Bridge was done at night. The work we did at Outer Marina was done throughout the night, even the Dorman Long at Ojuelegba was done at night.”

The controller added that the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing had zero tolerance for the illegal occupation of bridges. He said: “We are not going to tolerate any form of business under bridges. Infrastructure must be protected; therefore, illegal businesses there must go.

“The public is not allowed to sell petroleum products under the bridges. These are not what we should allow, and we will keep reporting to the appropriate authorities to see how we can dislodge these illegal occupants.

“Illegal activities undermine the strength of our bridges.”

Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria, having a land area of about 3,345kmsq. The state claims to have a population of about 17.5 million.

Politics / Insecurity: Pray For Military, Other Security Agencies, Adeboye Urges Nigerians by mrakeli62: 2:01pm On Sep 01, 2019
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Sunday, called on Nigerians to support the military and other security agencies with prayers in their task of addressing security challenges in the country.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that Adeboye made the call at his monthly telecast message, with the theme “Our True Shield and Defence”, via the church’s television at the Redemption Camp, Ogun State.

also reports that the prayer for the security agencies was coming against the backdrop of the spate of kidnapping, banditry and insurgency in the country.

The military has been at the forefront of quelling the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North-East, while insecurity in other parts of the country is also being tackled.

Adeboye expressed concern over the feelings by a section of Nigerians that the security agencies were not doing enough to curtail insecurity, saying that they were doing their best..

He, however, said that Nigerians should acknowledge the fact that the security operatives too had their limitations which could also have adverse effect on their operations.

The general overseer chided those who were in the habit of criticising the military, adding that they should rather pray for them to be able to curtail insecurity so that the country could be at peace.

“Some of us, all we know is to criticise the military, but we need to know that they too are human beings like us and they have their limitations. What we should do is to continue to pray for them so that they can record success in their operations,” Adeboye said.

The renowned cleric said that God was about to deal with the invincible enemies of Nigeria.

reports that the new calendar year of the church begins today.

“His Excellency, Gov. Seyi Makinde has interest of the youths of the state at heart, and he is an unrepentant progressive supporter of sports generally.

”With the insight that I have into his agenda, they’re amazing. What

Politics / You Can’t Order My Arrest, Okorocha Dares Ihedioha by mrakeli62: 4:07pm On Aug 30, 2019
Rochas Okorocha, immediate past Governor of Imo State on Friday dared the incumbent Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, saying he cannot order his arrest, as it is an open invitation to anarchy in the state.

The former governor issued a statement on through his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, denouncing the purported plan to arrest him, as it was an”open invitation to anarchy or fracas in the state.”

The immediate past governor said that the call to arrest him by the secretary to the state government, Uche Onyeagocha, was insensitive.

According to the statement, “The arrest order is an open invitation to anarchy or fracas in the State because Imo people will always come out to defend Okorocha. It also shows insensitivity on the side of the government in the State because such arrest order was uncalled for and Onyeaguocha has no right to issue an order of that nature.

“The order only adds to their continued disrespect for the former governor, which is a very bad precedent. After May 29, 2019, Owelle Okorocha relocated to Abuja. He was in Abuja when the recovery committee members slapped his daughter, Mrs. Uloma Rochas Nwosu, invaded and looted the shops of his wife, Nneoma and that of the daughter too. And just the previous week, Onyeaguocha invaded the private guest house of the former governor.

“The government had written petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission. And these agencies have begun investigations, yet they do not want these bodies to do their work which also arose from their petitions.”

The statement added that the same Thursday, Onyeaguocha led thugs to Sam Mbakwe airport and said they were waiting for the former governor, saying this was the first government in the history of the State that is fanning the ember of anarchy.

According to the statement, they were rattled the day Okorocha came into the State for the first time after May 29, 2019 and was received by a huge crowd, as it then occurred to them that their blackmail and lies had not affected the love of Imo people for their beloved former governor.

“That is the reason for all these insensitive actions. Okorocha will be in Imo whenever he deems it necessary to come, especially when he had transformed the State as governor and left it better than he met it. And had invested heavily in the State long before his governorship with his wife and children also having their businesses relocated to Owerri because they believe strongly in the State. Nigerians of goodwill should disregard the arrest order. It became void on arrival.”

Phones / Nigeria Remains Africa’s Largest Smartphone Market by mrakeli62: 6:10am On Aug 30, 2019
The Africa mobile phone market declined 1.8% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) in Q2 2019, according to the latest figures announced by International Data Corporation (IDC).
According to the global technology research and consulting firm’s newly released Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, overall shipments for the quarter totaled 52.2 million units, down from 53.1 million units in Q1 2019.

Feature phones accounted for 58.3% of the market, with shipments declining 3.7% QoQ, while smartphone shipments increased 1.0% over the same period to account for 41.7% share.

“Feature phones remain an integral part of the African mobile phone market due to poor network infrastructure across large parts of the continent, particularly in rural areas, and the ease of use of these devices,” says George Mbuthia, a research analyst at IDC.

“However, the transition to smartphones is continuing, albeit slowly, and the affordability of feature phones alone was not enough to stop this segment of the market declining in Q2 2019. Smartphones, on the other hand, enjoyed a recovery from the decline in shipments seen in Q1 2019.”

Nigeria remained Africa’s largest smartphone market in Q2 2019, followed by South Africa and Egypt. Nigeria and South Africa saw smartphone shipments increase 3.6% and 0.2%, respectively, while Egypt saw 18.0% QoQ growth after the market shrunk considerably in Q1 2019 due to the introduction of import registration and other import regulations.

Transsion (Tecno, Infinix, and Itel brands), Samsung, and Huawei were the smartphone market’s leaders in shipment terms in Q2 2019, with respective market shares of 37.4%, 27.4%, and 8.7%.

However, Samsung had the highest share by dollar value at 40.3%, followed Transsion (21.9%) and Huawei (12.2%).

Samsung’s dominant revenue position in the market is sustained through timely product launches across all African markets, particularly in relation to its A-Series devices, which are shipped in large volumes.

Shipments of 4G-enabled smartphones increased by 6.6% QoQ in Q2 2019 to account for 70.8% of the total smartphone market, spurred by the declining prices of LTE devices.

IDC forecasts that 4G-enabled phones will constitute 74.4% of the African smartphone market by the end of 2020, with 5G phones tipped to garner a 0.4% share.

“5G-enabled smartphones are expected to be introduced to the African market by end of Q3 2019,” said Ramazan Yavuz, a research manager at IDC.

“The first country to see the launch of 5G phones is likely to be South Africa, where the 5G infrastructure is being developed by Ericsson in partnership with MTN.”

Looking ahead, IDC expects Africa’s smartphone market to grow 4.7% QoQ in Q3 2019 to a total 22.8 million units.

Despite feature phones experiencing an average QoQ decline of 1.8% in unit shipments between Q1 2018 and Q2 2019, the feature phone market will grow slightly in Q3 2019, with shipments increasing 0.1% QoQ to total 30.5 million units, spurred by the introduction of support for basic applications and the ability of these devices to serve as power banks.

Politics / IPOB Is The Only Mass Movement Capable Of Organizing A Revolution by mrakeli62: 2:48am On Aug 28, 2019
The general public respect honesty, integrity, sincerity and humility. A politicians must say what they mean and mean what they say. The problem is that most politicians are liars and they say one thing to get elected and do another thing after they are elected. Where are the honest politicians? Where are the politicians who place the best interests of the nation first before other interests and special interests and personal interest? Crooked politicians are a disgrace to any nation. A lying, thieving corrupt politician is not "a fit and proper person to hold public office." ― Errol Anthony Smythe. But in this part of the world, we tear ourselves apart to keep them. But one would question why our thinking has gone so low to still support this men of high immoral behaviors, or is it that these men have ripped off our senses. One would have been forgiven for mistaking the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB's) civil disobedience against Senator Ike Ekweremadu, to the ranting of a Nigerian teenager approaching his puberty or aggrieved youth, or even a political quagmire, but to see some people who claim they are scholars supporting these politicians and condemning the action of IPOB is really worrisome.

To think that professors like Professor Charles Soludo, right thinking human beings and other well meaning Nigerians, would condescend so low in thought and civility to condemn the action of IPOB in Nuremberg, Germany, reminds Nigerians of the enormous work ahead if we will ever live in an environment of decent men and women. We are not just at war with the Nigerian Army who would prefer a bandit and murderer freed and their fellow force members killed, Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen menace; we are at war against deteriorating reasoning. “It looks like retarded specie of homo sapiens has evolved in the bantu sub-Saharan Africa". Nigeria will never see any revolution, except it is organized from outside the country and unless IPOB, spearheaded by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the organizer of the revolution.

According to Reverend Father Felix, "Africa political growth has been stalled on three factors." First, African revolutions have always been hijacked by the elites. Ninety five percent of the wealth of Africa is controlled by the political class and their cronies who do not constitute more than two percent of the entire population. Whenever the masses come close to a revolution, the elites dissolve into the crowd, forming groups and fake sympathy with the agitating masses. They hijack their common pain, use it to oust a regime and wrestle power back. Months after inauguration of the new regime, they begin reconciliations, sending the poor masses back home. We have seen this in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya. Gambia is the newest baby. In Nigeria, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), fantastically bequeathed to us, a corrupt system. At the peak of it, they got factionalized and formed All Progressives Congress (APC) and riding on public disenchantment against corruption, they hijacked the power back. Today, we have the worst government since amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914.

Secondly, African revolutions fail because African States get leaders they deserve. African masses are always weak to resist immediate gratifications for long term political freedom. Greed and hunger have forced masses to settle for anything. Across the 36 state capitals in Nigeria, the oppression is successful to the level that even our brothers and sisters are used to destroy our collective good. Even those not benefiting are just comfortable that their kinsmen are in-charge. Take a look at our haggard boys and girls who praise-sing our government. Their minds can be as damaged as some of their grammars. Our leaders know this, that is why they recruit willing hands to frustrate common good.

Lastly, Africa is nurtured into divisiveness. Nigerians can identify their problems but they seek solutions with divisive lens. We cry for neglect of infrastructures in the South-East but the leaders of the region convert our meager allocations into gifts and send them back to the North to curry favour. When policy analysts advocate for prudent spending, their first attack comes from the poorest of the poor".

It is time for Sowore to have a rethink, strategise, be more prepared and put his house in other before telling Nigerians about 'RevolutionNow'. From the look of things, he now knows he is on his own. Slaves can be saved only if they knew they are a slaves.
