Autos › Honda's 'element' Fades Away by mrofficial(op): 10:28pm On Dec 04, 2010 |
The Element was a brisk seller when it was introduced. In 2003, the first full year it was on the market, American Honda moved 67,478 of the vehicles. Since then, the customer base has dissolved. Through the current year to date, sales of the Element are pacing 4 percent below last year's nadir of 14,884 sales -- and that's in an automotive marketplace that's up 11 percent overall.
The function-leading-form Element, marketed to those with an active lifestyle, will be no more after the 2011 model year, according to Automotive News. Another vehicle based on the CR-V platform, as is the Element, will likely fill the empty slot in the manufacturer's lineup.

LONDON – WikiLeaks struggled to stay online Friday as governments and hackers hounded the organization across the Internet, trying to deprive it of a direct line to the public. Like a fugitive moving from house to house, WikiLeaks changed the name of its Web site after a U.S. company stopped directing traffic to wikileaks.org. French officials then moved to oust it from its new home.
"The first serious infowar is now engaged. The field of battle is WikiLeaks. You are the troops," tweeted John Perry Barlow, co-founder of the online free-speech group Electronic Frontier Foundation. His message was reposted by WikiLeaks to its 300,000-odd followers.
Legal pressure increased on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after Swedish authorities revised a warrant for his arrest in response to procedural questions from British officials.
Assange's lawyer said that he is in Britain but that she hadn't received a warrant by Friday afternoon.
The 39-year-old Australian is wanted on allegations of rape and other sex crimes that emerged after a trip to Sweden in August.
Assange said that his arrest would do nothing to halt the flow of American diplomatic cables being released by his group and newspapers in several countries, and he threatened to escalate the rush of information if he is taken into custody.
Hundreds of cables have been published by WikiLeaks and several newspapers in recent days. Assange said that all of the cables had already been distributed in a heavily encrypted form to tens of thousands of people.
If something happens to him, he suggested, the password needed to decrypt the data will be released and all the secrets will go out at once.
"History will win," Assange said in a Web chat with readers of The Guardian newspaper, one of the media organizations helping to coordinate the documents' publication. "The world will be elevated to a better place. Will we survive? That depends on you."
WikiLeaks doesn't depend entirely on its website for disseminating secret documents; if it were knocked off the Web, the nationless organization could continue to communicate directly with news organizations. But the site provides a direct line to the public, fulfilling the organization's stated goal of maximum distribution for the secret documents it receives from mainly anonymous contributors.
In an online chat with readers of The Guardian, Assange promised to improve the availability of the website as soon as possible.
"Rest assured I am deeply unhappy that the 3 1/2 years of my work and others is not easily available or searchable by the general public," Assange said.
EveryDNS — a company based in Manchester, New Hampshire, that had been directing traffic to the website wikileaks.org — stopped doing so late Thursday after cyber attacks threatened the rest of its network. WikiLeaks responded by moving to a Swiss domain name, wikileaks.ch — and calling on activists for support.
By late Friday, WikiLeaks was up in at least three new websites.
The loss of support from EveryDNS just a minor annoyance because the site can leap from one name to the next, said Fraser Howard, a researcher with Internet security firm Sophos.
"The whack-a-mole analogy is fairly good," he said.
The Swiss address directs traffic to servers in France, where Industry Minister Eric Besson called it unacceptable to host a site that "violates the secrecy of diplomatic relations and puts people protected by diplomatic secrecy in danger."
The general manager of French web hosting company OVH, Octave Klaba, confirmed that it had been hosting WikiLeaks since early Thursday, after a client asked for a "dedicated server with , protection against attacks."
He said the company has asked a judge to decide on the legality of hosting the site on French soil.
"It is not up to the political realm or to OVH to request or decide the closure of a site, but rather up to the courts," Klaba said.
WikiLeaks has been brought down numerous times this week by what appear to be denial-of-service attacks. In a typical such attack, remote computers commandeered by rogue programs bombard a website with so many data packets that it becomes overwhelmed and unavailable to visitors. Pinpointing the culprits is difficult. The attacks are relatively easy to mount and can be performed by amateurs.
The attacks started Sunday, just before WikiLeaks released the diplomatic cables. To deal with the flood of traffic, WikiLeaks moved to Amazon.com's Web hosting facility, which has vast numbers of servers that can be rented as needed to meet surges.
But Amazon booted WikiLeaks from the site on Wednesday after U.S. congressional staffers started asking the company about its relationship to WikiLeaks. Amazon said it ousted the organization in part because the leaks could endanger innocent people.
The U.S. is conducting a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks' release of the diplomatic cables. Attorney General Eric Holder said this week that the leaks jeopardized national security, diplomatic efforts and U.S. relationships around the world.
In Washington, the lawmaker expected to take over the House Judiciary Committee in January, Republican Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, said he plans to conduct hearings on the matter.
Republican Sen. John Ensign of Nevada introduced a bill to amend the U.S. Espionage Act that would give prosecutors more flexibility to pursue a criminal case against Assange and his organization. But there was little chance of passing a new law in the remaining weeks of the congressional session.
Assange also risks legal action in his homeland, where Australia said it would detain Assange if possible in response to the warrant filed in the Swedish case by Interpol.
Wikileaks.ch, is owned by the Swiss Pirate Party, formed two years ago to campaign for freedom of information. Its officials said they gave Assange information on how to seek asylum in Switzerland.

Politics › $35million Fraud: Oyakhilome Fights Back, Fingered In Fresh Scam by mrofficial(op): 3:19pm On Nov 27, 2010 |
Controversial pastor of the Lagos based Christ Embassy Church, Chris Oyakhilome who is presently being investigated for money laundering and illegal cash transfer of a whooping $35 million appears desperate to scuttle his probe as a fresh information from security agencies in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja shows that a press statement issued today attacking Justice Minister, Bello Adoke and credited to the EFCC actually emanated from Oyakhilome owned National Daily newspapers.
iReports-ng gathered that following a hint that the EFCC was closing in on the fake miracle pastor, his newspaper based in Emina Crescent, Ikeja area of Lagos was said to have devoted its last week edition to attack the EFCC chairman, Farida Waziri, creating the impression that the publication was sponsored by the Justice Minister, Adoke. The allegations in the newspaper edition were said to have infuriated Waziri who instructed her lawyer to slam a libel suit against the newspaper and Oyakhilome’s front who parades himself as the publisher of the paper, Sylvester Ebhodaghe.
Still desperate to scuttle his investigation, Oyakhilome was said to have through Sylvester, cloned the email address of the EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, crafted an offensive press statement against Adoke with a hint that Waziri may resign her job soon. The rogue team was said to have impersonated Babafemi and sent out the statement to media organisations worldwide.
Their trick was however exposed when Babafemi in a swift reaction issued a statement to disown the one earlier credited to him and already traced to National Daily newspapers. A quick investigation by security agencies was said to have revealed that the offensive press release emanated from Oyakhilome’s hatchet men.
Security sources in Abuja hinted that both Oyakhilome and his errand boys may be guests of security agents in Abuja this week over the impersonation scam while the pastor may have to contend with weighty questions on his money laundering activities also this week.
The statement later issued today by the EFCC is reproduced below:
EFCC RAISES ALARM OVER FRESH BLACKMAIL PLOT
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has described as cheap blackmail and an act of desperation by disgruntled elements a widely circulated statement credited to the anti-graft agency in which spurious and ridiculous allegations were made against the Attorney General of the Federation , Mr Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN as well as the EFCC Chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri.
A statement by the Commission on Tuesday November 16, 2010 accused those behind the fake statement of cloning the e-mail address of the Commission’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi and using same to send their own statement to media organisations including on-line publications some of which had already published the so-called statement which was written in bad language and taste.
The Commission wishes to disown the statement in its entirety and urge all those that may have received it as well as the general public to disregard it as it is not in any way related to the reality of things on ground in the EFCC.
“The statement is just one of the numerous antics of crooks to set the office of the AGF against the EFCC in their desperate bid to cause confusion and disaffection between the two personalities heading the two public offices. They have tried this before now by sponsoring various publications attacking either the AGF or the EFCC chairman as a ploy to create the impression that such publications were sponsored by either of the two officials against the other.
“We wish to assure the masterminds of this criminal act that this is yet another of their failed plots to want to escape justice using all manner of crooked means. If they have failed to deter us from continuing their investigation and prosecution by killing and maiming our officials, sending of bomb threats and others, then their latest antic of trying to set the AGF against the EFCC will equally fail.
“We wish to emphasize that the EFCC chairman is not contemplating resigning her appointment on a non-existent ground that the AGF is interferring with the work of the Commission. The support of the AGF for the anti-graft agency has in no small measure helped to facilitate the recent successes recorded in the war against corruption especially some high profile convictions recorded by the EFCC.
“We also wish to assure the criminal minds behind the latest plot that we will continue to work with other security agencies to trail and track them no matter who they are”, the statement stated.
