korel9: I'm just watching everybody on this thread ranging from the Op to the uninformed and illinformed.
Let me clear the air à little.
There are atoms of truth in everything the Op has said eventhough he overblew somethings out of proportion.
Starting with the 5 houses one mosque, there's no lie in that except you don't really understand what he means by a mosque. Almost every house (especially those of the rich) has a mosque or a praying ground as many would rather put it.
On the issue of smoking, Mr Op you got that wrong. I don't think there's any state in the country today that has the high rate of smokers like Kano. But that can still be contested but truly the rate of public smoking has reduced drastically.
On intolerance, technically speaking it exists but mostly with the touts and those without control. I'll rather not use the word illiterates cos some literate ones still behave same. On stoning females cos of their dressing, yes it does exist but not everywhere and it's mostly from the almajiris. One thing u should know is that the Hausa man is always prompted to reacting violently to things that conttavenes his religious beliefs so when he sees these ladies with SOME sensitive parts of their body exposed (ask any Muslim what I mean by sensitive) the only way they tend to react to the arousement you've caused them is to act violently using religious reasons as excuse. But I must stress that this isn't so in all places in the state. But Kano people no dey use religion matter play o! An enlightened person may play it down but a tout or yandaba will always go extreme.
On d Islamiya issue, yes they attend that but it usually doesn't interfere with their Western education except if it's evening classes you take. But on the part of students telling you it's time for prayers during lectures, yes that's true. They do that very well. But u don't finish Islamiya before attending primary school, it's not so.
On the part of flexing or social life, it depends on how far you want to go cos there are places for different kind of flexing in Kano, sabongari just happens to be the headquarters.
Finally, for now sha, on the part of females not wanting to establish body contact with you in a keke, that's true but one thing is they won't even board same keke with you in the first place. But guy, those who say to kpansh Hausa babes is impossible, believe me they haven't tried or they lack what those girls want. I'm speaking from experience but as a Christian to marry a HAUSA Muslim girl? That's a big NO.
I'm not supporting any party here, I'm just here to make common sense and clear the air.
I'll stop here for now. Op continue but after you give me my two cents.
Lol brother, thank you so much. do u stay in Kano? I love your matured reasoning.
musicwriter: It's not funny at all, but something to take serious. In fact, Dr. Michio Kaku, one of the best physicist alive said ''science will eventually explain God''.
And, it's already happening!. Both religion and science is saying exactly the same thing!. The only difference is in the details.
Indeed, as quantum physics is showing, extreme science leads to spirituality.
Watch the video below. It's the most modern explanation by a quantum physicist about science, spirituality, and the nature of reality.
LucifersTongue: LOL @ all these NEPA bill physicists who never took a course in general relativity or read a book on astronomy but come here to spew rubbish with the same confidence that a mad man details his own impossible version of reality... because they've been reading pseudo-scientific trash on the internet e.g "mind is pure energy", "God exists outside time", "lizard people and Illuminati", "intelligent design" etc.
I wonder when we'll dump all these irrelevant and unscientific arguments and focus on proper STEM education and research leading to lasting development in our nation.
Most people that do all this argument are just science fiction fans and activists. Engineers that love science and philosophers that just talk from their instinct. Well let's allow them, they know better than us in their thinking.
It is believed that as we grow in our study of quantum mechanics we will discover that most of the things we believe now is even wrong. they are questions we still don't have answers to now but that does not mean that we won't have answers to it in the nearest future.
In physics something can come out of nothing, infact in nuclear chain reaction, we have seen things create themselves. Does it answer your question??
Usernamesucks: Mr Op, trust me. You're safe. Relax. Nobody will trace you (even though you’ve given out your phone number and location here ). I'm from Kano and I am sure if you do right, you'll enjoy the place.
About illiteracy, most of the kids at my ppa in Imo state where I served, didn't understand English language. It doesn't give me any reason to generalize and call all Imo indigenes illiterates. That would be a big, fat lie .
Kano- like any other state, has a distinct culture. Understand it and you won't have no complaints. Cheers.
rooqee120: I've Been Following This thread but don't wanna comment as so many ppl have already corrected the op, but pls this ur statement no follow at all. I am born and brought up in kano so kano is home to me. I'm in kano presently... but would not cease to say d truth that it's ppl like u that might probably be giving d op d impression he have abt kano. U should hv jxt agree or disagree with him, not threaten him. Be a good ambassador of what ever u represent. I rep Kano
Thank you sister, it's nice to see people like you.
Bandeco: Very unnecessary and childish comment from the OP.. Someone offer to hang out with you. His intention might be genuine and kind. Just say oh "that's great, thank you." No need to say fo " security reasons " and went on asserting that "no one can trace you. You are just creating unnecessary attention to urself.(He now proves u wrong and reveal ur ppa on the forum). Counter productive I must say!
abdulkayus: guy, 98percent of what u wrote is not the truth bt lies. U only have at 20 percent truh in ur writeup. Others are lies, mere misconceptions and exaggerations.
chat2deen: U wc, kaduna used to b d capital of northern region, most old government buildings, military formations are heavily concentrated in kaduna state, d transformation of kano into what we have today was done by ex governor kwankwaso over a span of just 4 yrs, while his counterpart ex-gov yero kaduna was busy milking kaduna dry been a stooge for namadi Sambo dia by doing little or nothing. D only fly over in kaduna (kawo) is just 100m build by makarfi as far back as early 2000. So wat u saw is either not updated or dey have no idea of wat is on ground. All d best.
Most of the people giving this rating have never been to Kano. Kano is very beautiful. Good road network. Infact Kwankwaso have written his name in the sands of time. I still don't believe he did it within four years, he did wonders
usy309: Oga OP....Is good that u write this personal experience, although there are a lot of mistakes....which are indeed forgiven as a first timer....in kano....
I do not expect all this refutation from those guys above me....they fail to understand what is meant by PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.....
ALL I WILL ADVISE U.....
USE UR KNOWLEDGE AND GET CASH AS PHYSICS GUYS ARE SCARCED....
DON'T FORGET SERVICE TO HUMANITY....IT IS SERVICE TO GOD.........
ENJOY UR KANO AND MAKE SURE U LERNT HAUSA B4 U COMOT
Thank you so much sir. Indeed physicists are scarce but truth be told I came not to make money rather to give service to humanity.
You are aware that the student's here don't give much for education. even to photocopy lecture note Na wahala. So trying to organize tutorial which can fetch me money isn't possible because I was told by my gas at the top that it must be for free. I solved past questions for different years for free.
thanks again, I understand you. we need much of you around.
boboLIL: mrphysics . Oga you have revealed much about you already.. Please oo,, for heaven sake, be careful oo, you can be traced...
I missed 2015 batch A because I was posted to sokoto... Nothing can make me go northern part of Nigeria. I fear that side pass satan....
Stop telling this story for now biko.. Okwa maka ndu gi oo.. I no wan hear ugly story for your head oo...
Don't meet anybody... Just know you can be traced...
Thank you sir. When I accepted to serve in Kano, it wasn't easy, it was really hard for my parents to accept that I will even go. You see brother, our life is really in the hand of no one. It's just God.
Just doing my best for my country, if I tell you what I have done outside my PPA for free you won't believe. I have no time of my own, everytime I am busy solving people's problem. if I do such, why then do people think I want to paint their culture black??
aminu150: You are funny. I can easily trace u if I want. U reside around kofar famfo close to FCE Kano and u do your PPA in Kano poly. Have an open mind and respect culture diversity, that way you will enjoy Kano. All those asking you to join Islam are doing it because they feel you are good mannered, honest, intelligeno ,generous, in short they just love you and want you to be part of them. Simple.
Lol, let's not argue further because it's not where i stay.
I am a physicist, I have an open mind regarding religion, I always give religion their respect. I have a Muslim friend and I have done to them things they wouldn't have done for me. I even read Muslim books like I read Riyya.
I also respect people's culture and way of life. Listen I have never for once in my post disrespect Hausa culture. I was really telling my audience how hard it is to adapt easily to the changes and how intending corpers need to behave themselves because it's really true.
ezan: What has swearing got to do with it? People shouldn't post wrong information about other cultures and places they've barely lived in. He already admitted he got the elected LGA Chairman wrong. Get your facts straight, bro. I had to suspend disbelief to carry on reading what was-initially-a very interesting thread. Sigh.
Nothing is wrong sir, I mistaken the councilor to chairman, remember I was talking about sabongari. so sorry about that but this is basically my experience and 98% of it is true
When I came to my PPA, as soon as I was accepted, I started looking for the does and don'ts of this place. TRUTH be told, they are many things to avoid here. Many things need to be avoided here in Kano. The way you talk, dress, how you eat, the way you relate with people. Here I have many friends, many friends who are from Kano, though they are nice but that religious issue will keep resurfacing.
When I met some friends here, they are students of some higher institutions here, I helped them solve some of their past questions, Infact, I was invited to their school to teach them, I went and delivered my service to humanity, I wasn't given even water to wash my hand. But one thing I noticed is that no matter how close you are to them, as soon as they notice you are not a Muslim then a line have been drawn.
I was shocked when after teaching one of my friend, he spent about 35 minutes telling me about Islam and why I need to join Islam. I had no option than to listen to him. The boldness he had was encouraging. Also my Hausa friend told me that the main criteria to marry her is that I join Islam, Infact she went to the extent of telling me who to meet to get converted. The boldness and authority they use in telling you about their faith is shocking though commendable.
I was often times told by my students that Religion is the first and foremost in whatever they do. I will be lecturing and I will be told that it's time for Islamiyya. I have had to stop lecture to wait for my students to go and pray. Infact I had a fixed lecture, when I came for the lecture, my students told me that its time for prayer and that THEY MUST go. I dare not prevent them seeing that religion is first because I can't imagine such happen in the west, south or east. Immediately after the afternoon prayer, I taught for about 1hr and I was told that it's time for islamiyya and that was how the lecture ended.
It's true that most of this Almajiri in Kano are not from the state, but one keep imagining why a woman will give birth and carry the person to another state without life's basic amenities.
They don't have cloths, not an accommodation, as I write to you now, they are outside playing football, making noise. they are littered everywhere. This people sleep on the ground, beside fence, in front of shops, come rain, come sun. I must admit the charity Kano rich men give to them, some of the big people around here cook for this Almajiris.
During this Ramadan, the love among this people can not be over emphasized, they will gather in one place and eat like a family. One day as I went to buy something, I saw one Alhaji stop in front of his house to give this people orange and other fruits not minding how dirty they make his fence to look.
But many questions need to be asked about Kano Almajiris, why are there always male?? Why send them to Kano to learn only religious studies without the hope of western education?? Why is it that they don't always go back to their state of origin.
I think the Federal government can pack all this guys to a good place, provide them with western education and train them as special forces. Most of this guys are the ones that cause violence in Kano.
GerogeI: Why all these unnecessary defence? It shows intolerance and conservatism, which is the point OP is trying to make.
I too served in Kano about 8 years ago! Yes, male-female relationship is highly controlled in Kano. As a foreigner you are safer when you understand how the local rules work.
I remember back in BUK, some male students made it a point of duty to always monitor me and my female Hausa corper friend, cause of them I always kept my office door open as I had nothing to hide. However, back at my Lodge an old neighbour almost married off a teenage girl to me cause, he complains everytime am coming back "Aquai Mata"
Further - I remember several times my female colleagues would run back to the lodge because a group of kids were throwing stones at them. We sent our Hausa colleagues to find out why, and it was apparently due to their dressing
I was once stuck in front of a mosque on a Friday, while walking home with my female Hausa friend(no taxi or bus), the police in front of the mosque almost went berserk on us for walking close to each other while in front of the mosque at prayer time, claiming we could cause a mob action. Had to give the chick 50m or so.
I spent at least 3 emergency nights at military Barack whenever we heard something happened in town. Our Lodge was not in Sarbon Gari, but rather near Kofa Gardon Kaya.
Saying or Claiming Kano is just like Abuja or Lagos is only going to be a disservice to both the natives, and the visitors, cause the later would assume and end up offending the former.
I enjoyed my stay in Kano, explored and made some of my best friends while there! I won't hesitate to visit again, but that is ultimately because I got to understand the societal fabrics and values of the people. The OP did not set out to paint an evil picture of Kano, but the kind attack he is getting is forcing him into a defensive stance that is now sounding defiant and tending towards a hack job.
If you are a Kano native, instead of these attacks, why not describe the relevant value system and help other to understand
Very soon they will come for you. Everything you wrote is the gospel truth. I will keep writing my story. Thank you once again sir for being the first person to speak the truth. All this Kano natives are just trying to hide the truth.

God bless you sir. This people have refused to get the message of this thread. Saying Kano is free is like taking away the meaning of freedom from the word FREE. Everything you wrote is what I and other corps members experience here. I have never painted or set to paint Kano bad. My words or post doesn't do such too.
BABANGBALI: you are not a graduate talkless of you being a corper serving in Kano. You are just a business man selling gala, minerals and provisions in the camp, but if truly you are a corper, you need to go back to all the schools you attended and ask for refund of all the school fees that you paid and then start again from primary 6.
Lol. I don't think you can get admission to the university I attended and I am very sure that you can't match me in any exam whatsoever and my CV will beat yours anytime any day. lol
Abokii8: I will draw the attention of your state coordinator to this. You spent less than two months in kano and you have the audacity to come online and rain curses on our religion, culture and ways of life right? Are you the first corper to serve in kano? Why cant you speak good or keep silent?
Lol. State coordinator lol Him be God coordinator?? Abeg get behind me.
mariong: Mrphysics you are contributing to the derailment of your thread. Why not ignore them and continue your story. Responding to all of them will only take you back and forth but truth be told there is more for you to know about kano. Things you should note: 1. Smoking is not banned (you can try to verify that) 2. No one will cut your hand because you are talking to à married woman. They might berate you in certain instances at most. 3. The Islamiyya thing is partly true (i say this because some of the poor and illiterate parents do this but its not common especially in cities) 4. The stoning part is true but it mostly happens when you go to areas with largely illiterate and unexposed inhabitants, there you will find many almajiri boys who like to look for trouble. If you must go to such areas dress conservatively. However, for most part of the city will hardly experience such.
Thank you so much sir , I will update the story very soon
DisGuy: I understand your experience will be different but you are coming with some authoritative statements even without evidence . How many corpers have had their hands cut off for talking to a married hausa woman? what has happened to all the people you see smoking? who arrested them?
The hausa boys and girls that graduated under 25 how was that possible considering your claim of compulsory islamiyya school pre conventional school. plus all the private schools and missionary schools like St Thomas. St Louis you think they teach in hausa language
You should get a refund from your uni, spend less time listening to beer parlour gists and use the money to travel and expand your mind!!
Lol, Mai gida. Why is it difficult to admit truth and then retouch where necessary. Am telling you my experience, tell us if you didn't first go to islamiyya.
Secondly, I know you are better than me, so what next?
FriendChoice: Whether enlighten or religious fanatics. There is nothing like primary 1-5 Islamiyya.
Islamiyya is entirely different from Western education. Both islamiyya and western education runs concurrently.
western education from morning to 1/2/3 or some schools you classed 4.
In science school you closed 6. e.g (Day science Kano)
While in the evening or night you can go to your islamiyya. And this is how its all over kano.
Even religious fanatic don't do what the op said.
Do you know how many islamiyya that is close to me? Do you know how many I have been to. It's true also that some rub concurrently with western, most guys begin with Tafeezh, Infact tafeezh is the most important, please be truthful and admit some truths
No 1 isn't a lie sir, everyone just have to be very careful so as not to be a victim. Most of the things that happen doesn't come online. Stoning too is very common or am I lying top??
No 2 is an interference, so sorry for that.
No 3 is a truth, people here smoke inside car, secretly. Infact I have a Yoruba guy that smokes, in other not to be stoned he smokes inside. It may vary from place to place and as you know Kano is too big. I can't tell you I have seen people smoke openly. Those that do in schools also do it secretly.
No 3 is a pure truth. Except if my student's lie to me, except if you are the only Hausa guy. except if my HOD is a fake Hausa man or except you want to lie.
viktohmarkz: Op I stand with you, some people are so annoying, when the OP started he stated that it was HIS own view, not everybody's view, who know he might start seeing the good side as time goes by, buh for now he's still finding places.
If you feel the OP is wrong, its not bad having your own point, open a thread and start posting yours, not come here. WE ALL HAVE RIGHTS TO VIEW THINGS FROM OUR OWN PERSPECTIVES, or am I wrong?
OP pls ignore and continue, buh I would strongly advise you to NOT give your phone number out here, also Change your PROFILE picture. so nothing can be traced to you. some people can act funny you know.
Thank you sir. It's God that protects.
That's how they behave naturally even here, you Dere not talk anyhow here. I communicate with igbo anytime I am saying anything here because they are all waiting for you to err and they will impose on you jungle justice. This is my experience, as a stranger, I will have a different views about things than them that are from Kano.
