OPEN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS CALL FOR IMMEDIATE SACK OF VICE CHANCELLOR,DRAG MANAGEMENT TO EFCC,ICPC http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/11/11/open-university-students-call-for-immediate-sack-of-vice-chancellordrag-management-to-efccicpc/ The lingering crisis between students and management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) over the lack of students association, lack of course materials adequately paid for, none admission of NOUN law graduates into the Nigerian law school, none mobilization for NYSC and other issues has reached its climax this week, as Students of the the institution call for the immediate sack of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ado Tenebe and other members of the management. The students also announced that, they shall immediately proceed, after this release, to submit a comprehensive petition, detailing all allegations against the management to the EFCC, ICPC and other relevant agencies for onward prosecution. The Congress of Noun Students, an unofficial student association in a press release dated tuesday in Lagos, 10 of November 2015, signed on behave of the students by 6 principals of the association led by Abdulrazaq O Hamzat (President), Iyinkaye Alameen (Gen.Secretary), Elias Ozikpu (PRO), Jonathan Okoli (Study Centre rep Coordinator), Ajala Maruf (Organizing Sec) and Afolabi Oluwaseyi (Social Director) said Vice Chancellor, Prof Ado Tenebe and his team Must Go for the University to have an headway. According to the students, the National Open University of Nigeria, an institution established to provide flexible, accessible and affordable education to Nigerians has now been turned to a money draining institution, where certain cliques of academia extort helpless students, whose only crime is their quest for University education. ‘’The University, which is now a den for endemic corruption has through all machinations, prevented students from having a formal student association as guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution, fearing that students association shall challenge corrupt practices taking place at the institution.’’ the group said. The students explained that, Congress of Noun Students (CONS), an unofficial group for Noun students across the federation had severally, but unsuccesfully sort to understand why those irregularities continue to happen, but the more we look, the greater corrupt intent we perceived in affairs of the institution, but rather than respond to legitimate questions being asked by the students in our numerous correspondence, our management said it owe no student any explanation, neither is it ready to stop violating students rights. ‘’As a result of students insistence over the numerous issues, the management felt threatened and sort to silence us by all means’’. ‘’On 9th of September 2015, leaders of the Congress of Noun Students honoured an invitation by the Nigerian Police at Ikeja police command, over a petition submitted by the management of our institution.’’ ‘’In the said petition, the management had falsely claimed that, we threatened the life of the Vice Chancellor, planned to vandalize government properties and incite violence against the institution.’’ ‘’The aim of the baseless petition was to criminalize leaders of the student Congress, simply because we asked the University authorities to respect the Nigerian constitution, by granting students rights of freedom of association as contained in section 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and to desist from what we adjudged to be extortion without justification.’’ ‘’The police, upon seeing such a petition swing into action with all seriouseness. They invited us for a chat at the police command, and after which they also invited us together with the representative of the University to meet face to face.’’ ‘’At the second meeting which took place on 10th September 2015, It was agreed that, there was no threat to the life of our Vice Chancellor. It was also agreed that, there was no plan to vandalize government properties or incite students into violence. The resolution at the police command was that, all claims in the petition were spurious, unfounded and baseless’’. ‘’Right before the representative of the University, the police asserted that, the Congress is only fighting for students rights and all we wanted is to resolve issues affecting students’’. Explaining what led to the petition against the students body, the students said,it presented management with a list of 10 points demand, which are valid issues that should be looked into. Prominent on the list was the issue of student association. Some other issues mentioned in the demand include the fact that, students pay for course materials without receiving the course materials. The total amount received for these course materials annually is over 14,000,000,000.00 (Fourteen Billion Naira). We asked why students should continue to pay since they don’t get the materials paid for. The student sais, ‘’It is not clear, why the University charges a COMPULSORY registration fee for research project for final-year students. Last semester (2014/15 academic session), this fee was charged at N10,000. Now, the University has, for unknown reasons, and without any official notice to its students, decided to increase this fee to the sum of N15,000. For its post graduate students, the University increased the research project fee from N15,000 to N40,0000.’’ ‘’Also, the University charges a COMPULSORY registration fee of N11,000 for Industrial Training which is usually deducted directly from the student portal. The University also charges the sum of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000) from each student in the department of Education before they under-go teaching practices.’’ ‘’As at today, National Open University of Nigerian currently has 3 sets of law graduates of which, none has been mobilized to the Nigerian Law School. Also, each students of NOUN had been paying N6,000 as NYSC regularization fee, yet no students had ever been mobilized. Again, after paying for a session fee, the University receive separate fee in second semester. They call it, semester fee.’’ We are asking for the rationale behind all these fees without any corresponding service. The Students further explained that, ‘’on the 28th October, 2015, management of our institution circulated a memo to all study centers, informing the directors to ban students from having any gathering. In this memo, they repeated the false claim of threat to life of the Vice Chancellor after it had been properly cleared to be false at the police headquarters. It became very clear to all that, the management knows that the existence of a Student Association will paralyze myriad of irregularities from which the management presently benefits. Hence, their effort to deny students their rights. While they had consistently failed to get our law graduates to be mobilized for law school since 2013,failed to get our graduates mobilized for NYSC despite receiving fees in this regard, they are vehemently making efforts to cripple justice in their favor. This unresponsive attitude, extortion and flagnant violation of student rights had provoked the entire students of the institution across the federation so much that the call for a nationwide protest had reached its ultimate high. In view of this, the students said they have had enough and therefore call for immediate sack of the The Vice Chancellor (Profesor Vincent Ado Tenebe), Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic ( Prof Patrick Eke Eya), Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration ( Prof Victor O. Adedipe), The Registrar (Mrs Josephine O.Akinyemi), and Bursar (Mr.John M. Onyeme). They said, this became necessary to avoid break down of law and order in the institution. ‘’We also call for the immediate overhaul of the senate of the institution, as members of the senate are active accomplice and beneficiaries of the numerous irregularities taking place at the institution.’’ Not relenting on their efforts to get justice, the students stated that, the sack of the above individuals is not all they are demanding, ‘’we also demand for their immediate prosecution over the endemic corruption that it currently taking place at the institution. The students affirmed that, ‘’Let it be known that should the appropriate authorities not act swiftly on this call, students may be left with no option, than hit the street in a peaceful protest to press home our demands. What are we demanding? Tenebe Must Go. What are we asking for? Our school flexible, accessible and affordable. What do we want? Our freedom to association, Admission to law school and mobilization for NYSC must be sacrosanct. They Concluded. http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/11/11/open-university-students-call-for-immediate-sack-of-vice-chancellordrag-management-to-efccicpc/ |

Biafrans dealt with Biafrans. The rebels captured Igbo cities and tormented innocent lives. Raping young women and forcefully taking wives from their husbands. Recruiting boys between the ages of 13-15 and above into their army. Killed any person suspected of sabotage. The saboteurs were worn the Nigerian army uniform, killed and termed Nigerian soldiers. Igbos suffered, but Nigerian armies rescued the captured cities one after the other, until all was rescued. Benin City was captured by the Biafran soldiers alongside Auchi, Agenebode, Okene, Asaba, Agbor , Iloshi and Atani while indiscriminately shooting and killing armless civilians in the process. Unbeknownst to General Banjo (the leader of this mobilization who was a Yoruba) a unit of Biafran soldiers under Lt. Col. Oechi attacked the government residence of Mid-Western Region governor David Ejoor at the behest of President Odumegwu Ojukwu to capture Ejoor dead or alive. Not wanting to appoint an Igbo over non-Igbo citizens General Banjo suggested that either David Ejoor, Sam Ogbemudia, or Col. Trimnell be made governor but Ojukwu refused and ultimately placed the Igbo medical-officer Albert Okonkwo governor. Ojukwu would finally execute Vitor Banju, Emmanuel Ifeanjuna (The first black African to ever win an international gold medal) and one Alale following a plot to agree a ceasefire with Nigeria. http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/11/08/biafra-is-a-scam/ |

South Africa finalize plan to return Nigeria’s $9.34 by Nov 30 http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/10/31/south-africa-finalize-plan-to-return-nigerias-9-34-by-nov-30/ The South African Government are reportedly ready to return the $9.34 seized from Nigeria If there is no further legal challenge. Reports by Sahara reporter indicate that, the South African government will hand over the sum of $9.34m to the Nigerian government on November 30, 2015. The said amount had earlier been confiscated by the South African authorities from an Israeli arms dealer, Eyal Mesika, of Cyprus-based ESD International, who was acting on behalf of the Federal Government to procure arms for Nigeria. Sahara reporter quoted a report by a South African news site, beta.iol.co.za, on Friday, which said Nigeria would get the confiscated $9.34m on November 30, 2015, the arms dealer would be freed without prosecution and the South African government would engage in future arms deals with Nigeria. “That is the result of a quiet deal finalising a year-long international wrangle after South African Customs officials and police stopped a man who flew into Lanseria Airport from Nigeria carrying bags stuffed with $9.34m cash for a ‘humanitarian’ arms deal,” the report said. The report further stated that two weeks ago, the National Prosecuting Authority of SA agreed to hand over the cash to the defence adviser at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, and that this agreement was made an order of the court. “The high court in Pretoria order technically declares the money forfeited to the state, but also refers to the Nigerian government as “the innocent victim” and excludes its interests from the forfeiture order, which means Nigeria gets the money. The handover is on November 30 if there is no further legal challenge,” it added. The report also said the NPA spokesperson, Luvuyo Mfaku, said Nigeria had in February applied for its interest in the money to be excluded from the order, which was done. “There is no criminal prosecution arising from this matter,” said Mfaku. The court papers outlined what happened after the flight landed on September 5 last year. The man with the money was an Israeli arms dealer, Mesika, and Nigeria’s involvement had emerged only later. Ideally, amounts over $10, 000 must be declared, but Mesika did not declare it until after officials scanned the bags and they could not work out what was in them. Subsequently, they asked him to explain. It was reported that all the paperwork indicated that the cash was for an arms deal that would not have been legal in South Africa. The cash was confiscated at the airport. The Federal Government had said Mesika had procured armaments for the country for 24 years and had the government’s cash to buy “humanitarian aid in the form of personnel, helicopters and equipment as well as military arms” for the country. Part of the money was also planned to be used to buy six “civilian” helicopters from a South African company, Tier One. Mesika had an end-user certificate (to identify the ultimate buyer) to buy armaments, including rockets, guns and drones “for the use of the Nigerian armed forces,” but Nigeria said the weapons were to have been bought in another country. However, the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit in South Africa had said the cash was “linked to the illegal purchase of weapons and ammunition and/or money laundering.” AFU officials said the end-user certificate and the seller at the airport with an invoice proved a planned arms deal in South Africa; the certificate differed from the invoice; the use of cash was suspicious; the sale agreement was signed only after the cash was seized and Nigeria did not initially try to claim the cash. Nigeria admitted to “procurement errors” in South Africa but said that as a result of this incident, Nigeria and South Africa “have agreed that Armscor, the official arms procurement agency of the South African government and an organ of the state, secures arms of behalf of the Nigerian government going forward.” In an official note to the AFU asking for “early release” of the cash, the Nigerian High Commission claimed that the South African Presidency “has directed that litigation against the seized money should be withdrawn” as it was for hiring “humanitarian helicopters.” By January, the Federal Government had found that the diplomatic channels would not work, so the high commission applied to the court for the seized cash, which has now mandated the SA government to return the seized cash. |

3 LADIES THAT ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN LINDA IKEJI http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/10/30/3-ladies-that-are-more-successful-than-linda-ikeji/ In the last few weeks, the news of a Nigerian female blogger, Linda ikeji buying mansion worth N500million in Banana Island, Ikoyi Lagos has littered the airwaves. Indeed, in a society where young people, especially women are mostly relegated, this is a good news worth celebrating. The achievement is even more sweet considering how hard she worked to acquire such success. Beautiful Linda Ikeji Beautiful Linda Ikeji However, while Ikeji, who is into celebrity gossips seems to be making headline for her wealth, especially her material acquisitions, we must not forget to celebrate the main achievers, who are touching lives of many others in positive ways. These are people who hardly think about themselves, young ladies who often put smiles in faces of others, extend helping hands to the needy, provide succor to the most helpless in our society and empower others to stand for themselves. What more could be described as success,if not what these ladies and many of their likes are doing to better the lives of our people. Linda Ikeji's N500million Mansion in Banana island Linda Ikeji's N500million Mansion in Banana island The truth of the matter is that, I am so much happy for Linda’s success, but while she may have the luxury of buying N500million to show off her wealth, there are other young ladies who can burst of such wealth or even more, but rather than acquire mansion to show off, they spend such resources on helping those who need it more. Some others don’t even have anything close to that, but they continue to provide support, from the little they have to lift people up, cloth those who lack, educate children and many more positive accomplishment. Here, I will show you some Nigerian young ladies who should serve as true role model for other young ladies across the world. Rabi Maidunama Rabi and some of the sickle cell patients under her foundation Rabi and some of the sickle cell patients under her foundation Rabi is the founder of Maidunama Sickle Cell Foundation, she is herself, a sickle cell warrior. She is a classical example of successful business lady, but one thing stands Rabi out among her peers, it is the fact that, all her earnings in business goes directly into her foundation. Despite her health challenges, she is the very hard working type who neither rest, nor sleep In pursuit of her dreams and aspiration in helping humanity. I have never seen a young lady that is so full of courage, motivation and passion. She works all round the clock to provide for the over 20,000 sickle cell patients under her foundation. She cares for them, cater for their health bills, maintenance, education and others things. She moves from one state to the other in search of Sickle cell patients to assist, organizes countless programmes to education families in rural communities, provide free genotype test as well as free drugs to the warriors. To the best of my knowledge, if people like Rabi wants to buy N1billion mansion, she could afford it, that I know for sure. However, rather than acquire such luxurious home, Rabi would spend such resources on providing help to her fellow warriors. Rabi Maidunama Rabi Maidunama When the news of a possible cure for Sickle cell came out, Rabi’s reaction is worth recalling here. She states that, ‘’As the news is circulating about cure for Sickle Cell, I want to remind that the so called cure 'Bone Marrow transplant has been available for years now, it is not new. The only difference now is that this available stem transplant comes with no chemotherapy. The question I want to ask now is, is it FREE! or affordable? Rabi in a sickle cell event Rabi in a sickle cell event She maintained that, millions of patients can't afford basic routine drugs and access to medical care and If this treatment goes for N1million for example and we have 30,000 patients, tell me how we are suppose to deal with it? I am definitely not interested in getting a cure myself because I am just 1 out of many I care for. Until this is free for my fellow warriors, there is no new excitement for me. This is the Rabi who cares. They went to 5 communities in Kwara State with materials full of luxurious bus. Beneficiaries of Eagle Foundation Beneficiaries of Eagle Foundation However, despite the successful distribution of those materials, Anifowoshe wasn’t happy, her mind was heavy even with the obvious joy and happiness on the faces of those who benefited from her gesture. She was worried that, the stress, management, resources and finances expended to get those materials to these communities might seem like a big deal, but its effectiveness or usefulness is very transient. anifowoshe She said, I don’t feel like an achiever, if within a month or so, the materials supplied get exhausted. To this young lady, if she has N100billion, it won’t go into buying expensive mansion, rather, it shall be channeled into the development of the rural communities and youths. This is the true definition of success. She is a wife, a good one. An achiever, business wise, advocate of truth and reorientation and a humanitarian per excellence. I do not know if she has so much money, but I know she would use whatever she has to support those needing help. Petra with gifts for donation Petra with gifts for donation While commending the hard work of Linda and her achievements so far, I would advice her to see success beyond the wealth one amass and the materials acquired. Your success cannot be complete unless it put smiles on the faces of others. It should be noted that, success cannot be entirely quantified merely by material acquisition or wealth, certainly not, success is much more than that. True success is that which put smiles on the faces of others. Now that Linda has achieved one side of success, I look forward to seeing her join the above young ladies and many others in putting smiles on the faces of others. http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/10/30/3-ladies-that-are-more-successful-than-linda-ikeji/ |
OUR PARENTS FAILED US – By Lurd Bouch www.mrrights.com.ng News Politics Opinion Peace & Conflict Resolution Human Rights Issues Entertainment Relationship Write for Us Home - Opinion - OUR PARENTS FAILED US – By Lurd Bouch http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/10/31/our-parents-failed-us-by-lurd-bouch/ It is no longer news that for the first time in a long while, three generations meet- The older generations – Pre-early 1980s, my generation – early 1980s – mid 2000s, and the younger generation – mid 2000s – present day. The meeting point is satiated with morality and economic equilibration. It used to be that children look up to the elderly ones for moral and economic dependence, for hope and wisdom. Today, we are all like crabs in a basket. Sadly but true, the purpose of parenting and tutelage has been defeated, and upon this I’d say: OUR FATHERS HAVE FAILED US BUT WE CANT FAIL OUR KIDS. One might wish to ask, how have our fathers failed us? Have they not sent us to school? Have they not raised us up properly? etc. Yes they have, but still they’ve failed us – They sent us to school but they never educated us, they said we should be good kids, patriotic, and accommodate strangers, but they towed the path of sentiment, tribalism, and religion. They spoke a lot on pureness but they practiced hypocrisy. They hyped so much on love and respect, but they live in hate. While the men took in young girls their daughter’s age for pleasure, the women replaced their husbands with their drivers and gardeners. They never thought about us, they never planned for us, they never laid good structures for us to build on. They never prepared properly for us. All they do is give excuses. www.mrrights.com.ng My generation, they (the older generation) made us believe when we sang that nursery rhyme “Parents listen to your children, we are the leaders of tomorrow, try to pay our school fees, and give us a sound education” – They cheated and lied to us. Sadly, they still use us to their gains, they give us weapons, entice us with millions of Naira, issue out orders, and stupidly we follow. We, by our own hands, are destroying our generation. We can no longer trust each other. We have inherited from them those things that has killed their generation – greed, hypocrisy, religion, and unpatrotism. We handed them our rights by accepting their Greek gifts, and to the detriment of our generation and the younger, by that, they manipulate us, and we have no moral ground but obey. My generation, For how long can this be? Open your eyes and see. Look to the future (Younger generation) and understand that the purpose [that we, (my generation) might learn their (older generation) successes, avoid their mistakes, be a better us, and create a better tomorrow (younger generation)], this generation is being defiled. Yes! We are learning but the bad. Yes! We are teaching but the evils and danger that we have learned. We have so much indulged in, those things our land forbids us do, those things termed barbaric but kept our land sacred. We have grown in us a great seed of greed and discord, a long line of religion and hypocrisy, a huge emissary of disrespect and lack of love. Oh! But why? www.mrrights.com.ng My generation, if we do not take this as a challenge seeing how gloomy the future is, to correct the wrongs, say no to ills, avoid the mistakes these oldies made, one day, our kids would walk into our study with a fully loaded revolver, tears streaming down their eyes, and these words in their mouth “FATHER, YOU HAVE FAILED ME”, then empty that fully loaded revolver on our rich and already breathless head. My generation, OUR FATHERS HAVE FAILED US. BUT WE CANT FAIL OUR KIDS. NO! NEVER!! http://mrrights.com.ng/index.php/2015/10/31/our-parents-failed-us-by-lurd-bouch/ |
THE CRAZE OF NAIRA DEVALUATION BY NIGERIAN ECONOMIST The call to devalue naira by global financial institutions such as IMF, world Bank etc is raising once again and as usual, some of their allies in the country are lending their voices towards such call, leading to pressure on the mangers of our financial regulatory body, CBN. As a result of such pressure in the past, naira had been severally devalued despite citizens opposition to the exercise. One prominent example is STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT PROGRAMME in the late 80's during IBB's regime, where resistance by students led to several death and thousands of imprisonment, yet our country never make any positive gain from such action. Rather, our naira continue to loose it's purchasing strength, leading to widespread hardship on our people. But instead of learning from the bad experience and avoid future reoccurence, successive government continue to toe the lazy path, thereby killing our prospects of attaining financial independence. It is important to note that, before the craze of naira devaluation , N1 equal $2. However, several devaluation continue to diminish the worth of our naira. From N1 to $2, it became N1 to $1, N10 to $1, N50 to $1, gradually to the current N230 to $1. Despite the several non productive devaluation in the past, the call for further devaluation is still much in the air. The painful aspect is that, those who often make benefits from these exercises are the same individuals calling for the devaluation, some misguided economic experts, disgruntled government officials, global financial institutions and some western countries. The people are often at the receiving end. I have been asking, why is naira always loosing value against dollars and not the other way round? What is wrong with our so called economic experts and why are they so obsessed with naira devaluation at the slightest opportunity? From N1 to $2 in the late 70's, it's now N230 to $1, is this not a grave injustice against the poor people of this country? To the best of my knowledge, these global financial institutions don't make such reckless call to powerful nations, their target is usually developing nations. They believe they can always coerce us to dance to their tune with the help of few greedy and selfish individuals, evidence show that, their believe has not been failing them. Now, they are back again, and the call for further devaluation is gradually gaining momentum, but should we succumb to this pressure to devalue, I don't think so, as a matter of fact, we must resist such call by all means. I therefore call on all Nigerians to stand against further devaluation of naira, to avoid the unnecessary hardship it would put on people. Mr Rights www.mrrights.com.ng |

IS NIGERIA REALLY WINNING THE WAR AGAINST TERRORISM? The government and Nigerian army said we are winning the war against terror, but the terrorists keep bombing every day and our fellow country people keep dying. Are we really winning the war? To answer the question, premise of government reasoning. The army and govt said we are winning the war because it has been able to prevent the terrorists from holding our territory and sacking them in most of the towns they had earlier occupied. But is that enough to say we are winning? I don't think so. Through out the 5 years of this battle, Wikipedia records indicate that, over 17000 people have been murdered. But reports from other sources indicate that, since the taking over of President Muhammad Buhari, about 1400 people have been murdered. Just yesterday, a Mosque was attacked in which several people lost their lives. In view of this, we must face the reality that, we are not winning the war yet. Preventing insurgents from occupying towns is not the victory in itself, victory is when we prevent them from killing our people. So, Provided the rate of killing is yet not reduce, provided the threat posed by them is very much intact and provided they can still carry out their mission successfully, we can't say with certainty that we are winning the war against terrorism. Therefore, I urge the government to desist from saying we are winning the war against terror. If the rate of killing did not subside, govt have achieved nothing. We must therefore double our efforts in addressing the challenges of suicide operation in the country. |
