If this is really how men SHOULD BE, the Bible wouldn't have said,'' A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his WIFE''. I did not see more than one woman there. If this is really how the mentality of men have become, then am sorry, but the level of foolishness is remarkable.

The question of accepting the man's surname or not after marriage depends to some
degree on her age. By the time most single ladies hit 40, that question is no longer an issue.
I'm just wondering, if faced with a choice of either accepting the guy's surname or staying
single their whole life, what will most ladies prefer?  Sisters, go ask your moms.
Not all women are desperate and if the man is an asshole a sensible woman will not marry him regardless if she is old or not.

Only a dummy would marries an asshole who thinks surname is more important than the compatibility and durability within marriage.

OMO TOO DUMB,

Up until this present moment, I have shown you nothing but respect. I have answered all of your questions and then some being sure to let you know that i respect you and your opinion. So for me to log on just now and see you refer to me as a dog after having accused Chima of taking this too serious FURTHER let's me know you are far beyond a male chauvinist, you are a punk. It kills you that not only were you 'sonned' and out debated by females, but FOREIGN ones at that.

I am not YOUR woman, YOUR daughter, YOUR pet, YOUR possession nor YOUR WIFE. GOD FORBID! I would rather live in an Ebola hot-zone than be married to a guy who believes because I belong to one s3x, my duty is to take heed to his opinion and live my life as according to how he sees fit ignoring my rights as a fellow human being. You cry and btch when you are attacked and now you want to drag me into this; angry because you do not have the balls to stand your ground and get your message across. Do not blame me for your failures. You can kill yourself if it bothers you that much. I suggest you use the wasted balls you were born with and the testosterone that is SOMEWHERE in you, and be a man. Grow up and quick!

For the record unless your name is Princek12, I was NOT talking to you when I mentioned that 'using God's name' line. Congratulate yourself

Interesting opinions, but thats all they are and are subject to being accepted or not. Amazing how many women 'claim' they would keep daddy's name, whatever it takes- has much to do with all these women lib talk that we can never get enough off. I'd say a man that accepted a 'name-sharing' arrangement with his wife probably stands to gain an undue advantage somehow; men are cunning. In few instances though, the man might actually be lily-livered and kowtow's to wifey's apron strings. A name is an identity; that u accept mine @ marriage in no way annihilates your lineage but affirms that we're willing to chart OURS. If she loves daddy's name that much, she bloody well better remain daddy's girl then.
Then you better marry a girl that isn't a daddy's girl that if you are single. It is that simple.

You talk like in every marriage, the man is always the bread-winner. Look around you, hun. It's 2011.

You are giving an illusion of everyone retaining their individuality and preference. Maybe I should rephrase: If a woman wants to retain her name, it's OK, the same woman should also be OK that the man wants a prenup or doesnt want to open up his bank account for her . The premise of retaining your name should also be extended to owning  properties, and financial matters.

BTW, in Naija, most men are breadwinners

This issue seems to be so close to your heart and it is obvious you are hurting somewhere, seeing as you overwhelming have the most posts on this thread; heck, you have the most posts on any threads that you have decided to spread your ignorance. It does not take much posts to articulate yourself, but given your level of expression and composition, we understand why you would think that more posts are equivalent to better expression. No one is using Jehovah's name in vain; explicitly stating what the Father has said by referencing His name is not using His name in vain. Of course, it'd be unrealistic of me to think your second-hand middle-aged brain will process anything that is written by anyone, or even written by you(as evidenced from your previous posts); nevertheless, your whining for the better part of the day is nothing short of a comic relief. It is a man's world; we just need women to support men in their world. Why is that so hard to grasp?

You cannot fight nature. We have the screwdriver and you guys have the receptacle. God made it that way. If you have a problem with it, go and talk to God.

As it is a man's world, that is why most women who marry change their names to their husband's names. While some women may choose to do otherwise, those women are in the minority and are the exception to the rule.

LOL!

Still don't know what the preservation of a woman's last name has to do with submitting to her husband. If the husband agrees then there is no problem. If he disagrees, one should know long before planning to get married. If this issue wasn't discussed during the courting period, what was? It's important to discuss topics that are important before the engagement.
Are people really effectively courting these days?  You know some people are in a hurry to get married and do not take the time look over the things of importance instead of stressing over surnames which is astounding.

I was expecting to see something like quality, substance, decency, and compromises but I guess I won't get that in this forum.   lipsrsealed

I guess if your name has no value, then there is nothing to it. For people who value their name and ancestry and culture, then they know the value of a name.  When men have prayed for sons to carry down their name, and when people pay to be identified with a name, you are here saying what is in a name.

Sorry if you do not know the value of your own name, assuming you are a man, but recognize that there a real man out there who know the value as well as the importance of their name.

If our ancestors in the Ancient Africa we know of wore straw skirts, women talking topless was a tradition and 'traditions are to be honored and kept' why wear cover up garments? why not pray to and Idol instead of the Holy Ghost? why speak English? Why even wear a dress and tux? why not lay down a mat and have 50 meetings with the men of the future bride's family, give the cows/goats/chickens and take your 'prize' instead of going before a preist and doing the 'holy matrimony' thing?

WHY? BECAUSE THINGS AND TIMES CHANGE! Ppl get wise and learn it is not a MUST to do things the same always, there is always room for change and individuality. Omo, Chima basically answered your question in a sense when she said "back in the day women were forced to marry anything and accept that person's identity.  They had no voice back in that time. . .".

In other words around the time the bible was written, and rewritten  wink by MEN with ulterior motives, a woman even being in a room with men, much less looking them in the eye was considered disrespectful. Women's rights? COMICAL.

So we are talking about an era in which women were not even second class citizens on a cross cultural scale. They came after their children, who came after the men. In essence they had no legacy to build because they were bred to be side kicks and to tend to a man's wants and needs from birth. they had no chance to achieve anything but a reputation at being good at doing menial/vocational jobs as domestic wives and house girls. Nothing honorable in that much less being a girl, evident in how ancient societies even permitted men to kill their baby girls is they did not desire them. The same laws also gave them rights to find and impregnate concubines to have sons who can CONTINUE THEIR NAME.

So what I am getting at is, women HAVING A NAME was impossible. So how would we choose our mother's names when they are using SIR. . .i mean SURnames from their fathers?

this goes back to what I said as well as Chima that the concept of taking a man's name meant female to MALE submission. Submitting and being the property to a suitor that back then they could not choose, but their fathers. Hence the 'slave' reference.
