Nigeria is a country where your course of study is never a platform for future ambition or career building. It is a place were a lawyer ends up as a marketer for a commercial bank,a plumber becomes a police officer,an engineer becomes a driver for dangote etc.Every thing seems to be upside down.Just follow your passion and do what makes you happy.
But your assertions don't apply to every course. Take Medicine for example

EducationWhich Should Students Focus On: Future Ambition Or Course Of Study? by mubarak89(op): 4:52am On Jan 10, 2017
What’s your future ambition?

Is your future ambition in line with the course you’re currently studying?

Now, here’s the most important question:

If the course I’m currently studying is not in line (not in the field) of my future ambition, which should I focus on building? My course of study or my future ambition?

Yes… please pause, and re-read the question again.

As a student whose future ambition is not directly in line with your course of study, which do you focus on?

Here’s a real-life instance:

While in school, I had a friend (let’s call him Timothy) who was studying Computer Science but his passion and future ambition was to be a kick-ass entertainment show organizer.

So…

Which should Timothy focus on: Computer Science or building the entertainment show organizer thing?

Please before you suggest something like:

“do the two” or “focus on the two” …

Put in mind that we’re talking about FOCUS.

Of course, you can be building your future ambition while still staying true to your course of study, BUT, you can’t truly FOCUS on both.

Focus simply means directing one’s attention on something (just one thing). When you focus on something, it gets the highest priority. It means that which you focus on, gets to take more of your time than any other thing.

When you focus on something, it becomes number 1.

Now to answer the question, I’ll have to ask one more question:

Which is more important to you: Your course of study or your future ambition?

My simple and direct answer is this:

Your future ambition is more important. Period.

I bet you’ll agree, that the most important of the two is the one that should be focused on.

Won’t that affect your academics in a negative way? You may ask.

Well, the answer is NO.

Focusing on something doesn’t mean NEGLECTING the others. Saying you should focus on building your future ambition doesn’t mean you should neglect your studies.

My advice is that you should make building your future ambition number 1 and your course of study, number 2.

Yes. You read that right.

Why do I advise that?

Here’s why:

Most of the things we’re being thought in class are not applicable in real life and employers are complaining; we’re concerned about the level of incompetence seen in fresh graduates.

The main problem is that students are overly focused on class work (academics) at the detriment of field work.

But I believe that can be resolved if students rise to challenge and focus on their future ambitions; making it number 1.

A student whose ambition is to become a Mechanical engineer goes to study Mechanical engineering in Uni. Or Poly. but at the end of it, he/she is left lost; with nothing tangible to offer. Plenty head-knowledge but no practicality.

For such student, enrolling in a nearby Mechanic workshop or learning the practicality on YouTube should be his focus while solving differential equations should follow behind.

Make your future ambition your number 1 focus and your course of study should follow.

For students studying courses in tune with their future ambition, I’m glad for you and wish you good luck.

Disclosure:

Kindly note that my use of future ambition here is not the vague: “My ambition is to make money”.

NO.

Rather, by future ambition I’m referring to your proposed future career. That which you desire to do or ‘go into’ after you graduate.

Lastly

It’s you who gets to make the final call.

So, as you decide which to focus on between your current course of study and your future ambition, I strongly recommend that you choose to focus on the most important.

Kindly share your thoughts and opinions regarding this topic. I’ll be here to respond to every single comment.

What does it mean for a student to graduate well?

Have you ever given the above question a thought?

We all got into school with the intent to go through the required number of years and then graduate.

It is expected that after going through school, we’ll come out better than we entered. In fact, schooling is an idea meant to make us become better persons in the society and in our chosen careers.

However, it’s no longer news that many graduates are not living up to expectations; and so, one of the things we hear every now and then is that:

"Too many of our graduates are not impressive".

Now… for every worthwhile endeavor we start, the intention is to finish it well; and this also applies to schooling.

Your parents, friends and the society expect you to eventually graduate well.

So…

What does it really mean to graduate well?

Below are 10 attempts to defining what it is; you should add yours in the comment section:

Definition 1
To graduate well means to finish school with skills that you can put to use to benefit an employer, a company, a locality, or a set of people and the society at large.

Definition 2
To graduate well means to through the school and emerge with excellent grades and the ability to easily learn new skills.

Definition 3
To graduate well means to finish school armed with solution(s) to problem(s) found in your chosen career-field.

Definition 4
To graduate well is to finish school with the ability to create a job for yourself and NOT depend on the government for job.

Definition 5
To graduate well is to finish school with the ability to critically think and come up with constructive ideas people around you and the world at large can use for their benefits.

Definition 6
To graduate well is to finish school with good head-knowledge and corresponding practicality.

Definition 7
To graduate well is to finish school having acquired the needed social skills and at least one hands-on skill or hard skill needed in one’s chosen field.

Definition 8
To graduate well means to finish school knowing fully well that you’ve achieved the aim for which you enrolled. The aim might be different for different people.

Definition 9
To graduate well means to finish school with these 3 things in place: /1./ - A good grade, /2./ – A skill you can render in return for money, /3./ – A good sense of direction of what next to do with your life.

Definition 10
To graduate well is to finish school inspired and pumped-up to cause positive change in whatever chosen career path and your circle of influence.

So…

There you have it. Which of the definitions do you prefer the most? Have yours? Kindly add it in the comment. Don’t like any of them? Please share your own in the comments too.

Key take away

Graduating with plenty cash in your bank account can make your journey into the labor market easier. You’ll have enough money to scout and apply for jobs online and to journey for job interviews.

You can also use the money to start a small business so you don’t stay idle and jobless.

And finally, …

What other ways can students use to graduate with enough money in the bank? Add to the list and let’s discuss.

#4. Savings

This is arguably the easiest way any student can use to graduate with plenty money in the bank especially for those who get pocket money from daddy and uncles.

Imagine you are able to save 10 percent of your monthly pocket money in a separate “Never-touch” bank account from the very first month you resume school. What will it add up to on graduation day?

For instance, let’s say you get 50,000 naira every month as pocket money; let’s do some maths:

20 percent of 50,000 naira is 10,000 naira.

Normally, a semester has 3 months. So, at the end of every semester you get 30,000 naira. And in a session there are 2 semesters hence, 60,000 naira per session.

So at the end of 4 sessions, you get 240,000 naira.

#3. Start & run a business before graduation

This way needs no too much explanation. It simply refers to coming up with a profitable business idea and pursuing it.

A lot of students who started businesses on campus graduated with enough money in their accounts that was used to further the business or to pursue further studies.

Apparently, this way can be considered the most profitable way to graduate with plenty cash in the bank.

EducationRe: 4 Ways To Graduate With Plenty Cash In The Bank by mubarak89(op): 5:33pm On Aug 23, 2016
#2. Student challenges and Competitions

Students challenge and competitions are a way students can become wealthy while they prepare to graduate from school but only a few students have been able to use it.

In my research, I notice that student challenges and competitions can be classified into 2: The small wins and The big wins.

The small wins refer to student competitions and contests that reward winners with small amount of cash; usually less than 1 million naira. They always revolve around essay or writing competitions and design contests. You can find such contests online; naijawriterscoach.com, naijacompetitions.com and opportunitiesforafricans.com are helpful in this regard.

The big wins are student competitions and contests that reward winners with millions of naira (mostly thousands of dollars). But most of such contests are tilted towards student entrepreneurship and social ventures. (Check studentcompetitions.com/competitions, gsea.org among others).

I know a good number of students who gathered a lot of small wins and eventually graduated with a chunk of cash in the bank. I have also met a few others who won big sums of money participating in the big wins.

You can choose this way too.

#1. Graduate with an astonishing CGPA

This is not always as easy as it sounds however, it’s on 'internet record' here and there that students who are able to graduate with stunning CGPAs get rewarded financially.

Remember the UNILAG 5-pointer; Ayodele Dada? He got 1 million naira for his record setting achievement. Also, in 2014, 160 first class graduates who are indigenes of Anambra state got 1 million naira each courtesy of their Governor; Peter Obi. And the list goes on.

Imagine the relieve that comes with getting 1 million naira credit alert just few days after your graduation in a world where most of your mates will be broke and in despair of what next to do with their lives.

But again, I must say that graduating with a first class is not a guarantee that you’ll be given cash; I know a good number of first class grads who didn’t get 1 kobo. But setting a record like the UNILAG 5-pointer seems to guarantee financial rewards.

Now…

On a lighter note, I see that Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) have made it a habit to reward students who graduate with first class results; so you might want to migrate to MFM if you decide to choose this way.

Education4 Ways To Graduate With Plenty Cash In The Bank by mubarak89(op): 5:21pm On Aug 23, 2016
Let’s be frank…

Which of these situations will you say yes to?

A situation where you graduate with a lot of cash in your bank account, or a situation where you finish school with virtually nothing in your bank account?

For me it’s a big "Yes!" for the first mentioned situation as opposed to the second.

With enough money at hand after graduation you will be able to easily and conveniently move around, print your CV and credentials, buy recharge cards and internet data to browse job portals, and so on without having to ask daddy or mummy for money.

But more interestingly, if you are more inclined to starting your own business after school, the money can even serve as capital for business.

After studying a good number of persons who were able to graduate with substantial amount of money in their bank accounts, it became obvious that by making deliberate plans, a student can avoid becoming a flat broke fresh-graduate.

How?

The answer is to use one or a combination of any of these 4 ways:

EducationThe 5 essentials of a good student life by mubarak89(op):
Do you know of certain students who appear to have everything working out for them? They hardly complain of anything.

It looks as if they are living the best possible kind of life on campus and in fact, other students sometimes envy them.

For such students, life is good. They are living the good student life. A student life that is satisfying, at ease, effective, pleasant, enjoyable and much more.

A student life that seems to be without any form of hardship.

And in case you’ve never seen such students before and are doubting if they exist especially in Nigerian schools, then I want you to know that I have seen a good number of them.

It is true that many of such students have got that kind of life mainly because they come from wealthy homes, however there are a very few others who made it happen themselves.

And the crux of the matter is this:
You too can have the good student life; you can make it happen for you.

Now… you may ask: "Is living a good student life really important?"

Well, here’s an important truth:

Students who live a good student life will always graduate well and in turn, become successful soon after they leave school.

Though the definition of a "good student life" varies and is unique to every student, there are 5 essentials that must be present. Therefore, if you wish to live a good student life then all you need to do is to focus and build on these 5 essentials.

They are:

#1. Having enough
There are basically two major things Nigerian students always wish to have enough of:

Time and Money.

Interestingly, students who live a good student live have these two. They have the money and also the time.

They have enough money for handouts, food stuff, good clothes, shoes, and the likes.

And interestingly, because they have enough money they can make more time available for them.

For example, they can always take their laundry to the dry cleaner instead of doing the washing themselves and that buys them more time.

#2. Good friends
Students living a good student life understand the importance of good friends and so they find and keep them.

This is because good friends provide you with support, they know you and still like you. Good friends know why you are school and will not do anything to derail you. They are willing to help when you go broke.

Good friends want you to pass and succeed. They are very helpful and want you to graduate well.

Good friendships are assets. I know a student who graduated and immediately got a great job because her friend introduced her to her dad who is a big shot.

#3. An exciting but healthy lifestyle
The music you listen to, the way you dress, the things you indulge in like partying, clubbing, and in general, the things you eat, and so on constitute your lifestyle.

Students living a good student life always have exciting and healthy lifestyle. A lifestyle that won’t hurt them or others.

#4. Spirituality
Spirituality helps you form your foundation, your values and beliefs. Students who live a good student life understand the importance of being spiritual.

You’ll always find them in the mosque or at the chapel praying or reading the holy books.

#5. Progress
You won’t be a happy student if you don’t make progress.

Students who live a good student life are consistently making progress different areas like in having enough, their academics, spirituality, self-development and in their healthy lifestyle.

Key takeaways:
Want to start living a good student life? I encourage you start with these:

#1. Try to have enough money by taking a part time job or doing a side business on campus.

#2. Focus on having enough time by improving on your time management skills.

#3. Now that you are in school, choose your friendships wisely such that you can bank on them even after graduation.

#4. Stay far away from vices. Avoid bad company and cultism like a plague. Do away with any lifestyle that is injurious. Avoid fights, exam malpractice and every other thing your school authority deems evil.

#5. Don’t be careless about the spiritual part of your nature because it is what makes us who we are. It makes us different from birds and animals.

And finally
Which of these 5 essentials of a good student life do you have?

Having enough, Good friends, An exciting but healthy lifestyle, Spirituality or Progress.

Or is there any other one you think I should add to the list? Drop your comments please.

Thanks for reading.

Ok. I get your point as regards the site design. However, I don't understand what you mean by user friendliness; do you mean User Experience (UX)?
Regarding the site design, I did it based on website owners' specification. Essentially, they want less pictures/graphics and enough white space to minimize load time.

EducationGet These 4 Things Right And Life After Graduation Will Be Smooth For You by mubarak89(op):
Gone are the 1980s and 90s when life was smooth for fresh graduates. When plumb jobs were readily available and all that was required for a fresh graduate to get a job was a certificate.

The game has changed since. A smooth life is no longer easy to come by for fresh graduates.
The game has changed because competition has stiffened. The number of ‘qualified’ graduates in need of jobs exceed the number of available jobs.

However, if you want a smooth life after graduation then you need to get at least 3 out of these 4 things right:

#1. Good academic standing
It is absolutely true that ‘having good grades doesn’t necessarily mean having the ability to deliver results’. But on the other hand, having good grades shows that one was able to commit to the exercise of schooling and hard work.

That’s one of the reasons why employers use the academic standing of job applicants to cut down the list of qualified applicants.

This means that graduating with low grades will reduce your chances of getting a job. And the opposite is true; having excellent grades increases your chances.

#2. Hard skill
This is one advice I give every undergraduate I meet. Acquire a hard skill by all means because it will make you better off.

Now in case you are wondering; hard skills are specific abilities that can be define and measured. That which we popular refer to as “hand-work”. It can be sewing, writing, ability to use a software, etc.

Having a hard skill will ensure that you never become jobless after you graduate. So, even while you are still hustling for a job with an oil company, you can be sewing beautiful shirts for sale.

Hope you get the point.

Get these 4 things right and life after graduation will be very smooth for you

#3. Work experience
Students are expected to have gained some level of work experience before graduation; that’s the reason why Industrial Attachment (SIWES or IT if you like) was introduced.

Now, employers know that most students don’t do Industrial Attachment rightly so they no longer take the experience gathered during the period seriously.

Also, student does Industrial Attachment and so it makes no difference if you do too.

However, you can take it further. Asides the usual mandatory Industrial Attachment, you can take up a part time job or internship in an area you’ll love to work after graduation.

Another thing you can do is to start and run a business before graduation.

Imagine the difference it will make if you talk about your part-time job or entrepreneurship experience in your CV. You can include such as your work experience and it will give you an edge over your mates.

#4. Attend to motivational materials
I will tell you a simple truth:

95 percent of my friends who gave time to reading motivational and self-help materials (books, blogs, audio and magazines) are succeeding in their finances, social life and spirituality.

Now, the reason for that is fairly simple:

As students we are made to deal with a lot daily; assignments, group work, the impromptu test you missed, and so on. All of these can wear someone out and cause weariness.

Motivational materials can help you get our mojo back.

They ‘ginger’ us when will feel weary and tired. They remind us to not give up, to be hopeful, and to remain inspired.
