On another note, the chemical composition of the asteroid can also cause more damage. Some asteroids are composed of rocks while some are a mixture of metals and space debri.

An asteroid with heavy iron composition will enrich the earth's ocean by triggering the growth of zooplankton and phytoplaktons. The excessive growth of these tiny organisms and residual iron particles will reduce the ocean oxygen levels and will have the ocean looking red as blood.

Fishes will die and our oceans mineral composition (salinity) will increase. With the lowered solar radiation (owing to the dust in suspension), evaporation rates over our oceans will further decline due to this increased salinity. Rainfall will be rare overland and a drought will set in.

Ocean replenishment from rivers ( fed largely from rain) will drastically reduce as a result of the global drought. Our ocean flow patterns will thus be reduced leading to increased carbon levels thereby killing any surviving life form in our seas. By this time our ocean will appear dark green and covered with fungi and algae.

Meteors the sizes of buses vaporize in the upper atmosphere due to friction of air particles and never make land impact. On a clear nite like today you can observe one or two. You know them as falling stars and they leave a trail of vaporized gas and meteo debri usually bright orange in color.

If a large meteor or asteroid (as they are called if they are significant in mass, size and density) impacts on the ocean, a tidal wave is created similar to a tsunami. This will affect coastal regions but the water will sooner recede. If however the impact is on land say the Sahara then we will have catastrophic blast similar to a very large nuclear bomb which will spew debri into the atmosphere. If a jet stream is present, the dust Will be circulated round the globe enveloping our atmosphere with a reddish hue of dust. This debri will settle gradually but the finer grains of dust and sand will remain in our atmosphere for centuries.

This dry aerosols will have an effect similar to the harmattan dust haze we are currently experiencing by selectively reflecting incoming solar radiation but allowing for outgoing terrestrial radiation. The consequences of which will be global cooling which will usher in an ice age for another millennial.

Seun, if I may suggest, you should try to discourage members from opening a thread solely on recycled news articles.

Apart from the copyright infringement, it also does not add any value to the discuss and makes Nairaland look like a mirror board.

What should be encouraged is subjective threads citing or quoting external references.
