Following the successful activation of the Economic Sustainability Plan’s (ESP) Cash Transfer scheme aimed at delivering financial support to at least 1 million urban-based households using technology, the Buhari administration’s vision of reducing extreme poverty by lifting at least 20 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next two years is now within reach, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. |

"We are going to be building concrete roads in the country so that anytime we build a road, we do not have to go back to repair after the third raining season." The Dangote Group has completed Nigeria’s longest rigid pavement located in Kogi State. It is the first of its kind, top engineers say. The 43KM Obajana-Kabba road constructed by Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), has been described by motorists as the country’s most strategic highway that is aiding travellers between the North and the South. Olatunbosun Kalejaiye, the Project Director, said he was excited that the Corporate Social Responsibility Project is being delivered for use by Nigerians, adding that while the rigid pavement has been completed, the company was dressing the shoulders. Site Engineer Samuel Obosi assured that the dual carriage way will be durable and less susceptible to potholes and repairs like asphalt road, adding that it would crash the rate of road accident in the country. Motorists said it is now one of the busiest roads linking the two regions in the country. “Thank God it is a concrete road. It can withstand any heavy duty vehicle,” Lamidi Sikiru, a driver expressed optimism. John Moses, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, said his taxi business is booming compared to when the road was very deplorable with potholes and barely used by motorists. A community leader of Apa Bunu Kingdom and spokesperson for the community, Sam Omosayil, commended the Dangote Group, saying that the road has attracted a lot of businesses along the road. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/north-central/437083-dangote-completes-nigerias-longest-concrete-road.html?fbclid=IwAR3egEMuy_o9BSUjvUpz5mSe1kVdqDANl482nxYeeuG8--Iew73lHUF8708 |
Nigeria Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was one of the top personalities in world to gain popular traction across the social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter inclusive, in the year 2020. Osinbajo, a workaholic, is not a usual deputy, spectators opined, considering the position he took on national issues. More Nigerians have commended him for standing by the people, while few others blamed him for the inactions of the government. Punch reported on Saturday, January 16, that FG snubbed an Osinbajo report, in a story titled “COVID-19: Again, FG snubs Osinbajo report, mobilises corpers to camps”. The story according to many Nigerians is a smear campaign against the growing popularity of the Vice-President. The All Progressives Congress through its handle, @APCNigeria, wrote: “This headline is both sensational and false. The ESP report that suggested the consideration of suspension of NYSC orientation was approved both by the President and FEC. That takes the matter farther from Osinbajo.” Twitter users soon joined in on the chatter. A twitter user, @ekitiketekan, wrote “It was Economic Sustainability Committee led by VP Osinbajo that asked the FG to "consider" suspending the NYSC. It was suggestion for consideration , If campaign, church and Mosque are allow then why not NYSC. PUNCH IS USELESS” Kate Nnaji said “Punch is as useless as it comes. The suggestion was by the Economic Sustainability committee which the VP chairs. The committee was set up to mitigate the impact of COVID19 on Nigeria & the nation. Churches, mosques, bars etc weren’t allowed to open then and so was for the camps”. CBN Governor Akin wrote “PUNCH and USELESS HEADLINES. Osinbajo report or FEC? FEC approved the ESP with the President's endorsement. After the Report, NYSC reviewed the situation, Mandated Covid19 Test by NCDC for ALL Corps Members. So as to detect COVID-19 positive & now they have ok the situation”. Daniel Ojo said “A false news at its rising again. This is false which disregards the effort of the FG. There are proves that earlier decision has been made with the efforts of the VP Osibanjo”. “To be very honest, Punch has totally lost it”, says Alabi Dee. According to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the executive functions of the Nigerian vice president includes participation in all cabinet meetings and, by statute, membership in the National Security Council, the National Defence Council, Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of National Economic Council. Although the vice president may take an active role in establishing policy in the Executive Branch by serving on such committees and councils, the relative power of the Nigerian vice president's office depends upon the duties delegated by the president. Other functions of the Vice - President are in sections 4, 5, 6, 130, 141, 148(1) and paragraphs 5, 16, 18 and 25 of the third schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999. Also, Barr. Onyekachi Umah in his article titled “WHY THE VICE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA HAS NO POWERS OR DUTIES OF HIS OWN AND HAS NO RIGHTS TO PRESIDENTIAL POWERS” said “there is no powers or duties specifically vested on the Vice President of Nigeria, although it is a creation of constitution”. But Osinbajo, a former university teacher, has done more by raising the bar and earning the trust of his principal. Just before the #EndSARS protests, the Vice - President had admonished the executive and legislature to focus on what they have been elected or appointed to do which is to improve welfare of the people. Speaking at the Executive - Legislature leadership retreat, he said “So, my brothers and sisters, it is time to focus on what we have been elected or appointed to do; this is the welfare of our people. “The law and practice as between parliament and executive is a means to an end not an end to itself; the means must not jeopardise the end. “Our people just want food on their table, shelter over their heads, clothing on their bodies, healthcare and education for their children and themselves.’’ Aftermath the protest against the police high handedness, the VP led National Economic Council also directed the immediate establishment of State-based Judicial Panels of Inquiry to investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra judicial killings with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squads (SARS) and other police units.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OSINBAJO TO FG PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES & EXPERTS: COVID-19 PANDEMIC OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE HEALTHCARE DELIVERY *Local vaccine production, enforcement of non-pharmaceutical measures against virus & testing modalities reviewed at interaction with health & medical experts Just as COVID-19 poses one of humanity’s greatest public health challenges, the pandemic provides an opportunity to ramp up public health infrastructure in Nigeria including the training of required experts even as governments should be doing more in the area of funding, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. Prof. Osinbajo stated this Thursday at a virtual meeting with top government officials and a group of Nigerian scientists who have been working on some of the public health dimensions of the pandemic. The interaction which focused on Nigeria’s response and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, featured presentations by one of Nigeria’s leading virologists, Prof. Oyewale Tomori; Infectious Diseases Scientist, Prof. Philip Onyebujoh, and the Director, African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), Redeemer’s University, Prof. Christian Happi. On the government side at the interaction were Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire; the Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Aliyu Sani; and the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu. This is the second interaction the Vice President is holding this week with professors and scientists on the medical and public health dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier on Tuesday, he met with a group of scientific investigators into the possible usefulness of Ivermectin medication in the treatment of COVID-19. “We are at a point where we can gain tremendously as a people from this pandemic and a lot of what has been said will really help in putting this in perspective for us as government, so we can actually go out and resolve many of these problems and improve the environment for ourselves, and for the coming generations in particular,” Prof. Osinbajo said after listening to the experts at the over 2 hours long meeting. Acknowledging the significance of the interaction with the scientists especially in providing valuable suggestions in addressing the country’s public health challenges, the Vice President noted that “this has been an inspiring intervention and discussion. I say inspiring because it is evident that our experts (whether they are directly engaged or not) are also paying attention not just to an unfolding public health problem but also the very many opportunities that this problem provides for us, the many opportunities to ramp up our public health capacities in various ways.” Speaking further about leveraging the pandemic to address challenges in Nigeria’s public health infrastructure, Prof. Osinbajo added that “I think that we must focus on those opportunities and make the best of this situation.” According to the Vice President, “I think that we must be talking now about local vaccine production, improving the training of laboratory scientists, and generally improving our capacity to respond in various ways. “We must really focus on the opportunities that this period really gives us. What I have noticed is that unless something like this happens, we are very frequently relaxed and just hope for the best. I think we are in a position now where we can do a lot. In fact, there is the opportunity to do more in terms of government funding.” “So, I think this is a major responsibility for us, the government, at this time, to really look at how we can, at least, do much better in terms of preparing young men and women for the challenges ahead. This point was also made about the quality of laboratory scientists and the quality of medical personnel and paramedics and all that.” Earlier in his presentation, Prof. Tomori emphasized the need for authorities across different levels to leverage the opportunities created by the COVID-19 pandemic to overhaul the entirety of the country’s health system, noting that “we cannot let this pandemic go without starting the production of vaccines here in Nigeria”. Stating his desire to help authorities resolve lingering issues in public health management, the renowned virologist noted that he has benefited so much from the country hence his love and desire to see a better society. In the same vein, Prof. Happi emphasized the need for a closer collaboration between the public and private sectors to transform Nigeria’s health sector not only in providing the necessary infrastructure but in making possible the local manufacture of medical consumables. On his part, Prof. Onyebujoh advocated improved coordination especially in the States in the areas of identification, isolation and clinical management of infected persons, for the country to effectively manage the current rate of transmission. He added that the acquisition of sufficient doses of vaccines would also go a long way in containing the transmission rate, calling on authorities to put in place effective strategies to manage the storage, distribution and the actual vaccination of persons. Addressing some of the concerns raised at the forum, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire said the country was expecting about 10 million doses of the COVID-19 viral vector vaccine. The minister added that the 10 million doses is aside the 100,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine being expected in the country, noting that both types of the vaccine would be received, sometime in March 2020. Dr Ehanire noted that the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with other stakeholders had already put in place mechanisms for the management of the vaccines, but emphasized that Federal Government was encouraging the use of IVERMECTIN, while expecting more research done on the prophylactic use of the medication. While commending the efforts of Nigerian scientists, especially in proffering solutions to the management of the pandemic, the Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Dr Sani Aliyu said there was need for the strengthening of enforcement of COVID-19 protocols, calling on state governments to work more closely with the Federal Government. He also assured that public testing was available for free to Nigerians. On his part, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu disclosed that in ramping up testing across the country, the NCDC has adopted rapid testing. He said rapid testing was deployed for the last orientation programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He said the NCDC in collaboration with stakeholders was currently working on building the capacity of medical personnel across the country as part of measures adopted by the Federal Government to boost the country’s infectious disease response capabilities. OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE: Air Task Force Destroys Boko Haram Terrorists’ Gun-Trucks, Neutralizes Several Insurgents at Mainok in Borno State "Boko Haram terrorists have a hard time understanding the jig is up. After losing hundreds of fighters in recent weeks, some Boko Haram commanders figured it was a good idea to attack an army base. The attack underscored the illusion of Boko Haram commanders. Boko Haram insurgents attacked the base in their classic style. Dozens of fighters attacked from four points simultaneously, firing mortars and RPGs, hoping to overwhelm the defenders and overrun the base. Remember this was the same tactics used in their attack on the Gudun Bali base last Friday. The Nigerian army was not gonna fall for this again. They allowed the insurgents close in on the base before engaging. Call for aerial support was delayed to give the attackers a false sense of security. Nigerian troops reinforced the base with orders not to fire their weapons and reveal their position. It must have felt too easy because the wary insurgents attempted to set up a defensive perimeter in a village called Arkuma but changed their mind. Turns out the insurgents had been firing on mostly empty structure all along. Nigerian troops opened fire from well concealed positions up close, making their RPGs useless. In their confusion the insurgents attempted to fight their way out the ambush but were picked apart. At 6pm seeing the battle was lost, the insurgents attempted to salvage defeat by attacking the village of arkuma. They mounted on 15 trucks and and approached the village from different directions simultaneously to wreak havoc. This was when helicopter gunships swooped low and made minced meat of the convoy. Many of them who survived the strike and ran towards the village on foot were cut down by snipers." Nigeria shall not be terrified by terror! Nigeria will definitely prevail!!! |
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT PETROLEUM INDUSTRY BILL (PIB): WE NEED TO PRODUCE LARGEST OIL VOLUMES POSSIBLE AT CHEAPER COSTS, OSINBAJO TELLS OIL & GAS STAKEHOLDERS *VP adds: “Gas should be an enabler for quick development” Stakeholders in the oil industry need to find and agree on cheaper means of producing oil while also ensuring a more competitive environment that meets the needs and purposes of the Nigerian nation including the largest production volumes possible. This was the view of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, at a virtual meeting on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) with stakeholders in the industry under the auspices of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) in Nigeria, and Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG). According to Prof. Osinbajo “we need to agree on terms that will give us a more competitive environment. We should find a way of producing oil cheaper at the largest volume possible given the circumstances and future of oil itself, and of course, given our requirements and needs." The meeting held Tuesday afternoon just as consultations ahead of the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) continue. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo noted that in line with the focus of the Buhari administration, there is need for stakeholders in the sector to agree on terms to create a more competitive environment, while maximizing opportunities in the oil and gas industry. Continuing the Vice President said “the other point is that of gas. To sound the question of reconciling and maintaining our domestic gas obligation, and at the same time improving the gas environment in such a way that we are able to benefit maximally from it as a business and government. “I like the concept that gas should be an enabler for quick development and I think that we must reach some kind of balance with this, especially with this question around domestic gas obligation. I would like OPTS and IPPG to look more carefully and see in what ways we can come to some agreements as to how it should be done.” Speaking further on the benefits of harmonizing interests in the PIB, Prof. Osinbajo observed that the passage of the PIB should be seen as an opportunity to transform the industry by addressing lingering issues that have impeded development across the different sectors that make up the industry. “Businesses would like to invest and invest more in this environment. So, that is the point of convergence. We want more investments and obviously state governments like more investments, and you (private companies) would like to invest so that you can make more money. No question about that; what we should seek to do is to see to what extent we can come to that convergence,” the Vice President said. The new PIB, which was presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari in September last year, has already passed the second reading in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The central aim of the bill is to foster sustainable development in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Timipre Silva, said the interaction with the stakeholders in the petroleum industry is indicative of their commitment to the transformation of the industry through the PIB. He assured that working with other stakeholders, including the National Assembly, the PIB as conceived by the Buhari administration would be passed into law. On his part, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr Mele Kyari said that most of the concerns raised by stakeholders have been addressed in the proposal before the National Assembly, noting that the Federal Government has moved from its previous position to one that is more competitive and attractive to investors. Commending the efforts of the Buhari administration in guiding the process of having a new law for the industry, the Chairman of OPTS, Mr Mike Sangster, who is also the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Total E&P Nigeria Ltd, said stakeholders remain committed to making Nigeria the “preeminent hydrocarbon province” in the region and the world. Other participants at the meeting include the Chairman and Managing Director of ExxonMobil in Nigeria, Mr Laing Richard; the Chairman of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr Rick Kennedy; and the Chairman of IPPG, Mr Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, among others. STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT IMPLEMENTATION OF ESP SURVIVAL FUND SENDS POSITIVE ECONOMIC SIGNALS, YET WE MUST SCALE UP INTERVENTION IN MSMEs SECTOR, SAYS OSINBAJO *VP interacts with stakeholders, reviews impact of 2020 MSMEs clinics *Says small businesses are engines of growth of any economy *Highlights impact of FG’s MSMEs Survival Fund scheme nationwide In partnership with the private sector, the Federal Government would continue to support innovation and interventions to boost the growth of small businesses across the country, so as to improve the economy and create more employment opportunities for Nigerians, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN Prof. Osinbajo stated this Monday at the first meeting of MSMEs stakeholders for the year 2021. The Vice President urged stakeholders in the public and private sectors at the virtual meeting to be innovative in the interventions planned for small businesses across the country, so as to consolidate on the gains recorded in the MSMEs space in the past few years Emphasizing on the scale and scope of interventions for the MSME sector, the Vice President noted that, “we must continue to be innovative in the interventions that we plan for MSMEs, because small businesses are the engines of growth of any economy, in the areas of wealth creation and employment opportunities, MSMEs are very important.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said, “we really have to think out of the box in our engagements going forward. We need to change the way we do many things, we need to look for ways of multiplying our efforts, because the challenges in this space are greater than what we have been able to achieve so far. "Of course, we have done a lot, but looking at the numbers in need, you will find out that there is a lot more to be done.” Speaking about the implementation of the MSMEs Survival Fund and the impact on the economy, the Vice President said, “the implementation of the Survival Fund by the Federal Government has sent the right signals that MSMEs are an important component of the economy.” The Federal Government’s MSMEs Survival Fund grant scheme, which includes Payroll Support, Artisans and Transport support tracks, is a component under the Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan, NESP. The Survival Fund scheme, designed to cushion the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic especially on the most vulnerable small businesses, is a conditional grant to support vulnerable MSMEs in meeting their payroll obligations and safeguard jobs in the MSMEs sector. The scheme is estimated to save not less than 1.3 million jobs across the country. Commending stakeholders for their cooperation and commitment in the implementation of schemes and initiatives in the MSMEs sector, the Vice President said, “working together, we can achieve more in the MSMEs space. I am glad to hear that there is more collaboration among partners and among Ministries, Departments and Agencies.” Earlier in her remarks, the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Mariam Katagum said the implementation of the Survival Fund across different areas lessened the burden of the pandemic on businesses. According to the Minister, “Having impacted over 300,000 beneficiaries under the Payroll Support scheme, paying them N30,000 and N50,000 as at December 2020; and successfully completing the enumeration and disbursement to 166,000 Artisans as at December 2020, the Federal Government, through the Survival Fund, has filled the gap created as a result of the pandemic.” She noted that the support provided through the Survival Fund will go a long way in cushioning the impact of the pandemic as observed in comments captured in the testimonies of beneficiaries of the various tracks under the scheme. On his part, the Special Adviser on Economic Matters to the President, Ambassador Adeyemi Dipeolu, emphasized the need for stakeholders to seriously consider the possibility of expanding the scope of the MSMEs Clinics to cover more beneficiaries and consolidate past efforts. He noted that having been limited to Nasarawa and Ebonyi States alone in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the secretariat, in line with the directive of the Vice President, intends to take the Clinics to the remaining States of Benue, Imo, Lagos, Gombe, Adamawa and Jigawa, in order to ensure total coverage of the country and prepare the ground for a possible nationwide second round of the Clinics. Ambassador Dipeolu said that other initiatives that require improvement in collaboration and scope of implementation include the Shared Facility Scheme which was launched in Benue and Lagos states respectively in 2020, with Anambra and Kaduna waiting in line to be inaugurated. He noted that the scheme has proven to be one of the key products of the MSMEs Clinics that needs to be sustained and expanded. In his remark, the Managing Director, Bank of Industry, Mr Kayode Pitan, said partnership with stakeholders grew even stronger in 2020 despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that the Bank, working with other stakeholders, will adopt strategies that will grow the MSMEs space in 2021 and beyond through the provision of facilities and other guarantees. The Managing Director of Access Bank, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, who represented the private sector at the meeting, reiterated the commitment of the sector in supporting the Buhari administration’s vision for MSMEs through the various initiatives implemented in the Clinics and Shared Facility Scheme. In the same vein, the Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Mr. Segun Awolowo, spoke about the collaboration among agencies in the MSMEs space in actualizing the objectives of the Federal Government. He said the NEPC would leverage existing and renewed cooperation among agencies to actualize its new project aimed at supporting businesses in overcoming the COVID-19 disruptions, tagged “from pandemic to prosperity”. Also, in a brief remark, the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye, said though the COVID-19 pandemic limited the operations of the agency in 2020, some innovations introduced in the wake of the pandemic went a long way in improving its operations and the overall certification of products. Other stakeholders, including heads of government agencies, expressed their commitment to work together to impact more businesses in the MSMEs space in 2021. Other participants at the meeting include the Managing Director of NEXIM Bank, Mr. Abbas Bello; Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr Inuwa Abdullahi; the Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (SMEDAN), Mr Dikko Radda; a representative from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Kudu Adamu; Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Mr Joseph Ari; and Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Mr Farouk Salim, among others. STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT NIGERIA IS STRONGER TOGETHER OSINBAJO SAYS AT ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE SERVICE VP pays tribute to Nigeria’s military heroes and heroines Despite differences in religion, ethnicity, political affiliations, or other diversities, Nigerians of all generations and from all walks of life must endeavour to commit to ensuring Nigeria’s unity, because the nation is stronger together than apart, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. The Vice President spoke today at the Interdenominational Church Service for the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration, which held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Sunday. According to Prof. Osinbajo, who was represented at the Church Service by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Nigerians “must at every opportunity insist that every great multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation has, through thick and thin, fought to realize the great dividends of diversity and pluralism.” He reiterated the need for Nigerians to, as a mark of honour for the sacrifices of the men and women of the Armed Forces show more commitment to the unity of the nation and the task of building a better society. The VP said, “the struggle to ensure a more perfect federation is a lifelong enterprise to which each generation must resolutely commit.” While paying tribute to the departed men and women of the nation’s Armed Forces, he observed that their sacrifices embody ultimate patriotism as they laid down their lives in the line of duty. According to him, “drawn from all across the country, these brave men and women of the Armed Forces have made our nation proud and their lives show us what it means to be patriots. Each one of them reminds us of the timeless words of our national pledge: “to be faithful, loyal and honest, to serve Nigeria with all our strength, to defend her unity and uphold her honour and glory.” He noted that the departed heroes and heroines of the Armed Forces “fought to preserve the freedom of the nations of the world from totalitarianism in the First and Second World Wars; to keep our Nation and its people as one in the Civil War." Continuing, the VP praised the members of the Armed Forces adding that they "laid down their lives in peacekeeping operations on the continent and elsewhere, paid the ultimate price in the fight against the mindless terrorism in the North East, and in defending this land from other threats to security. "It is to the memories of these heroes and heroines that we pledge in the words of our National anthem: that “the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain. “That promise that their blood, spilled on the field of battle, will not be wasted, is the burden that we, the living, bear. And it is an onerous one indeed.” In his tribute to the departed members of the Armed Forces, the VP recalled the heroism of the late Ms. Tolulope Arotile, who made history in October 2019, when she was winged as Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot in the 55 years of existence of the Nigerian Air Force. He said, “although her young life was cut short in very unfortunate circumstances, Tolulope lived her dream to join the Nigerian military and along with colleagues from all parts of this nation, to defend the territorial integrity, peace and security of this nation. Prof. Osinbajo noted the nation will always be grateful and proud of the continuing commitment of our young men and women to serving in the Armed Forces. He said “this occasion is also one where we celebrate, honour and pray for the families, relations and loved ones of our fallen heroes, those who daily bear the pain and deprivation of their absence. On behalf of Mr. President and the Federal Government, we once again extend our sincere condolences to you. We pray that the Lord will comfort you and uphold you daily.” Laolu Akande Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity Office of the Vice President 10th January 2021 |

*Top US-based tech firm joins global giants Facebook, Google, HUAWEI others focusing more on the country *VP: We will use technology to engage our youths & address issues affecting our people *Microsoft: Nigeria's tech space would become most viable in Africa Just as global technology giants including Google Inc., HUAWEI, and top social networking company, Facebook, another international tech heavyweight, Microsoft Corporation, has disclosed plans to partner with the Federal Government for the benefit of the Nigerian people, especially young people. Specifically, Microsoft is now offering support for the Digital Transformation pillar of the Federal Government's Economic Sustainability Plan. This will be a continuation of the technology company's investment in Nigeria after the establishment of an African Technology Development Centre in 2020, all in affirmation of the efforts of the Buhari administration in the creation of a viable technology ecosystem in Nigeria. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Thursday noted in a virtual meeting with Microsoft Corporation team led by its President, Mr Brad Smith that the company’s interest in supporting the efforts of the Federal Government is a welcome development and could be leveraged to address issues affecting the youths especially in engaging them productively. While Google Inc. in July 2020 announced plans to establish its first Google Launchpad Space outside the United States in Lagos, Facebook, in September of same year made public its decision to open an office in Lagos as part of its planned expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa. HUAWEI on the other hand last November promised the Vice President that the company will position Nigeria as a technology center for the African continent. Speaking on the need to constantly engage with the youths, the Vice President noted that Nigeria’s case is peculiar given that the youths constitute a larger percentage of the country’s population hence the need for all stakeholders to pay more attention to that demography. His words: “It seems to me that there is just a wave of general anger around the world and people are generally impatient. Impatient with government, impatient with practically all of the formal structures there are. “But I am open and happy to hear what views there might be on trying to engage and engage even more with young people (and in our case, that is 70% of our population, if not more). So, we are really talking not just about the youth population but the Nigerian populace because that is the majority. So, whatever it is that we are able to deploy to be more inclusive, to engage, even more, is really a solution for the entire populace as opposed to a solution for just a segment of our population especially given the fact that young people constitute 70% or even more.” Speaking on the government efforts in developing the technology space especially in boosting viable sectors of the economy, Prof. Osinbajo noted that “we have a digital innovation initiative which we hope will be the foundation for doing far more in the digital space than we are doing at the moment.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo emphasized that “just looking at agriculture, this is obviously something that we’ve spent quite a bit of time and resources on especially in the past few years. We have also seen the development of a good number of agric-tech type companies and fin-techs that are also working in the agric sector. So, it’s a whole load of innovation around the agric tech space, especially in the past few years. So, I think we really are up for programmes that will support these sorts of agric-tech initiatives”. Referring to the partnership with Microsoft, especially the establishment of the development centre, the Vice President said “I have always wondered how Microsoft can just be a much more effective partner with us as a country. “Beginning with the African Development Centre which I think is excellent, I think it shows the commitment of Microsoft in developing the digital centre here in Nigeria. And it also shows the company’s confidence in the sort of talents that we have and the commitment of government to ensuring that we develop that talent in the best possible ways that we can.” Assuring investors in the Nigerian economy of the commitment of the Buhari administration in creating the right environment for businesses to thrive, the Vice President said “we are all working to create the right environment for innovation and creativity. That remains an issue that we are dealing with on a daily basis, and I think that the challenges are the challenges of the sort that we are going to have to be dealing with (in my view) even in the coming years.” On his part, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Ali Isa Pantami, said the Federal Government has already put in place the necessary structures to partner with Microsoft and other tech companies in developing Nigeria’s technology ecosystem. He said the National Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Policy, the National Policy on E-governance, among others, have been adopted by the Buhari administration to support the growth of technology and innovation in the country. Earlier in his remarks, Mr. Smith, noted that his company’s vision for investment in Nigeria was one that would lead to the creation of Africa’s most viable technology ecosystem. Mr Smith said the company’s investment in Nigeria is a demonstration of its enthusiasm about the digital transformation ongoing in Nigeria under the Buhari administration. He proposed a 90-day timeline for stakeholders on the government side and from Microsoft, to iron out details of the various areas of collaboration. Other participants at the meeting include the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami; Microsoft Corporation’s Country Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, Mr Akin Banuso, among others. US Capitol Attack: Pence and Osinbajo incomparable, Twitter users pummels alarmist The attack on the United States Capitol and the role of the Donald Trump's Deputy, Mike Pence, who doubles as the President of the senate has sparked some controversies on the social media. Pence, who until the recent recount of ballot by the Congress was not as pronounced in the decision making of the Trump's administration, was said to be incomparable to Nigeria's Vice -President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, SAN. Pence, unlike Osinbajo, some Twitter users argued that he has been silent on important issues like the trade war between the United States of America and the Peoples Republic of China, the rise of the COVID - 19 pandemic which has dealt a blow on the nation's economy and also on the black lives matters protest. Some Nigerians explained that Buhari's deputy did not only perform incredibly well as the acting President of Nigeria, he also sacked the then Director of State Services, Lawal Daura, for a security breach and at several times stood by the people and helped revived the economy. See tweets below: Tise Somide wrote “One man openly condemned SARS and secured Presidential authority to dissolve SARS. One man directed the formation of judicial panels across the country to get justice for victims of police brutality. One man has made sure FG programs get to the grassroot”. Another twitter user explains that “Prof Yemi Osinbajo is the most active and emphatic Vice President Nigeria has ever had. That VP Osinbajo has not acted in the defence of democratic norms in Nigeria or that he has sided with acts that violate the Nigerian constitution are not only deliberately, misleading and unconscionable, such a claim is also wicked. The VP respects and upholds the tenets of the Constitutions and rule of law. Besides his active pro-people advocacy and activities in govt in his capacity as VP, it was VP Osinbajo (then as Acting President) who fired the former DG, SSS when he violated the sanctity of the National Assembly. As Acting President, the VP had then described the unauthorised takeover of the National Assembly complex “as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all acceptable notions of law and order.” It was VP Osinbajo who rallied inside govt to condemn police brutality and start the ending of SARS. It was Osinbajo that openly condemned SARS and secured Presidential authority to dissolve SARS. According to the VP, “We recognize that the balm for a wounded society is truth and justice.” This is a pointer to the VP’s conviction as an advocate for truth, justice and equity in society. As chair of the National Economic Council, it was VP Osinbajo who instructed and ensured the formation of over 30 Judicial panels of inquiry around the country to to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra-judicial killings and ensure there is justice for all victims of police brutality including the setting up of a panel in the FCT. This is the hallmark of leadership. The VP has always been a voice for the people in government: It was VP Osinbajo whose voice was heard loud and clear condemning the shooting incident at Lekki and standing with the people of Lagos when no one in power was speaking about it. This is in spite of the fact that he as VP had no direct supervisory role over security matters. It was the VP who ensured that the military authorities are subjected to civilian authority on the matter of the investigation of the Lekki shooting by setting up the Panels including the one in Lagos and ensured the military went to the Panel to answer questions on its activities on the night of the shooting It was VP Osinbajo who lambasted a gathering of police chiefs publicly Lagos to end police brutality while asserting the rights of the Nigerian people, years before Endsars became a trending subject. VP Osinbajo is ALWAYS the voice and activist inside govt calling to order every act that is against the Nigerian Constitution and securing Presidential authority to reverse same. EG when the autonomy of universities was assaulted, it was the VP that acted. The VP has been commended by several national figures from for his leadership qualities and commitment to the service of his fatherland. This speaks volumes about a leader respected and trusted by Nigerians For decades, the VP has always been and continues to be an advocate for the rule of law and order. As Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in Lagos State, Osinbajo led several significant reforms which has since become a template for the judiciary nationwide. There is no basis for comparison between US Mike Pence in relation to his role as Trump’s deputy and Osinbajo’s role as Nigeria’s VP under President Buhari. Trump’s actions many times incited rebellion against the American constitution. President Buhari never did such. Also, VP Osinbajo has always upheld the constitution in the discharge of his responsibilities as Nigeria’s number two citizen. VP Osinbajo has been vocal about the need for reforms in Nigeria’s justice system for the betterment of society. This shows that he is always on the side of the law and will never support unconstitutional acts. The VP is a stickler to justice and the rule of law: in 2019, following baseless allegations, insinuation and falsehoods against his person and office, the VP had stated that he would waive his constitutional immunity to clear his name and “enable the most robust adjudication”. Throughout his career, the VP has consistently proven himself as a man of integrity, honour, strong character and values.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT FG, CEMENT MANUFACTURERS AGREE ON DISCOUNT CHARGE FOR ESP 300,000 SOCIAL HOUSING UNITS *Osinbajo commends contribution of major cement producers *Adds: It is possible to deliver decent, affordable housing for Nigerians As part of its determination to ensure the success of the Social Housing scheme where the Buhari administration will construct 300,000 houses under the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP), for low income earning Nigerians, cement manufacturers have agreed with the Federal Government to charge discount price. Making the disclosure over the weekend while visiting the completed model houses in Dei Dei at the Federal Capital Territory, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, affirmed it is indeed possible to deliver decent and affordable accommodation that will be within the reach of many Nigerians. Answering reporters' questions after the visit to one of the construction sites of the Social Housing scheme, the VP noted the contributions of major cement manufacturers in the country towards the success of the programme. According to him, “they have agreed to give cement for this project at considerable discount which is a very helpful thing to do and we really commend and thank them for the contributions they are making, it is a very patriotic thing on their part. They also see the importance of this Mass Housing Programme.” After seeing the prototypes of the one-bedroom and two-bedroom bungalows, Prof. Osinbajo expressed satisfaction with the quality of the design and the fact that the houses are very affordable. The Vice President noted that, “on the average, anybody who is earning N30,000 a month and is ready to spend a third of that amount, will be able to afford one of these houses, that is the plan. What I have seen so far, there is a one-bedroom unit and there is a two-bedroom unit, both coming under N2 million. “I think that this is a very good thing indeed. And a point has been made that it is possible to build good, decent accommodation that isn’t out of the reach of practically everyone.” Commenting on the implementation of the scheme across the country, the Vice President assured that the Mass Housing Programme will be provided across the country. Prof. Osinbajo said, “we are hoping that we will be able to replicate this not just in Abuja but all over the country. So far, the Family Homes Fund is in 11 States, and they have given up land for the project. “We are hoping that this year, we will be able to very rapidly improve the scale and speed of putting these houses in place. Once we are able to get moving quickly, we think we can make available several thousands of houses across the country and more people can afford to live in such houses.” The Vice President noted that the job creation component of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) would also be actualized through Social Housing Scheme. His words: “Also important is the job creation aspect of it. You have young men and women who are builders, architects, civil engineers working on this project. We are hoping that a lot of the building materials will be locally fabricated especially the windows, doors and other components of the houses.” The social housing scheme of Buhari administration is an important aspect of the plan by the Federal Government to address the housing needs in the country by building thousands of low-cost houses and in the process create wealth and jobs for youths that will be engaged in the construction of the houses. Under the ESP, the Federal Government has mandated the Central Bank to provide financing for the housing scheme and a N200B facility has been approved as the first tranche already. There would also be Rent to Own option as part of the administration's resolve to impact the common man in this social housing plan expected to generate 1.8m jobs and deliver houses to about 1.5m Nigerian families. The implementing agency, Family Homes Fund (FHF) Ltd, an agency under the Federal Ministry of Finance, has already mobilized thousands of Cooperative groups across the country who will participate in the Social Housing plan as the main warehouse agents and also mobilize the low-income buyers. For instance, FHF has met with 93 Cooperative Leaders from the 6 geographical zones, under the aegis of the Co-Operatives Federation of Nigeria. Individuals who do not belong to cooperatives have not been left out as they can also apply through the portal: www.nshp.gov.ng. STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT MSMEs SURVIVAL FUND: WE MUST FIND WAYS OF DOING MORE, SAYS OSINBAJO *FG Covid-19 Stimulus package impacts about a million already *VP also meets automotive manufacturers on new tariffs With the kind of impact and interest already generated among Nigerians by the ongoing implementation of the Survival Fund under the Economic Sustainability Plan, there is now a need to expand the scope and reach of the benefits to an even larger number of the populace, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. This hint was dropped at a virtual meeting held just before the Christmas holidays between Prof. Osinbajo and the Steering Committee of the MSMEs Survival Fund. The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Ambassador Mariam Katagum, Chairperson of the Committee; the Chairman of First Bank, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, the Committee's Vice Chairperson, among other members. So far, the scheme has commenced disbursement to about 500,000 beneficiaries: the Payroll Support Scheme has paid close to 350,000 beneficiaries; almost 166,000 0f 300,000 Artisans have benefitted from the Artisan & Transport Scheme; and the Corporate Affairs Commission is ramping up numbers to register 250,000 new businesses free of charge. By the end of December, an approximate of 400,000 Payroll Support beneficiaries would have received salaries for October to December, while structures have been put in place to commence the General Grants and the Guaranteed Offtake Scheme early next year. Speaking on the implementation of the scheme and the need to expand the scope, the Vice President said “the data indicating what you have done so far shows that it is possible for government to deliver big programmes, and to deliver them credibly. And it is possible for people to actually benefit from government programmes especially with as little interference as possible from the political forces which is what has been the bane of several government programmes in the years past.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo noted that, “I think that we must find ways of expanding the scope of the scheme, because when you look at the numbers that we have approval for, the numbers are small in comparison to the enormity of the problems that we are faced with. “Even if we are able to reach 2 million beneficiaries, it is still a tiny percentage of the millions who require help and assistance. So, I think, we have to find ways of trying to seek an approval to expand the scope of the scheme. This is an important aspect of it.” Commending the committee for their efforts in impacting the lives of beneficiaries of the Payroll Support, the Artisan and Transport grants as well as beneficiaries in other tracks of the scheme, the Vice President said the partnership with the private sector in the implementation of the scheme was notable. In another virtual meeting on Tuesday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and some federal ministers interacted with the Nigeria Automotive Manufacturers Association (NAMA). At the meeting last week, the VP said the central plank of the government’s automotive policy was to protect the interest of all Nigerians, noting that maintaining high tariffs on automobiles will not necessarily lead to growth in the industry. According to the Vice President, “Government has the responsibility for ensuring the welfare of the people, everybody and every industry. And the Auto industry is important. I understand all the issues about how the auto industry contributes to macroeconomic growth, jobs and others.” Prof. Osinbajo noted that the way forward was for “the auto industry to challenge itself and whatever support it requires from government to be able to say, where is the Nigerian car that will be affordable to all and affordable to most people. “You got to find a way of developing a local industry that will benefit the people. If that is not working then it may mean that it is not just an auto policy issue. I know there are many constraints to manufacturing, but we can make things work. Explaining further, the Vice President said “I want us to take all these into account and see that we must work jointly, it is not just about protecting an industry, it is about protecting the economy, and protecting everybody. “There are countries of the world that have the same parameters as we have and are able to do much more for their people. I think we should think along those terms, and not simply think about how this industry will maintain this relatively high tariff and for how long will this high tariff be maintained. Is this the only way of sustaining the industry? I don’t think so. You don’t need 77% percent tariff to ensure an industry grows, I don’t think so.” Present at the meeting were the Finance, Budget and National Planning Minister Zainab Ahmed; Industry, Trade and Investment Minister Otunba Niyi Adebayo and other top government officials alongside representatives of the automotive industry. Fahdiga:One thing I’m certain about is that your stupid father won’t say this. |
Permit me to use the popular lingo now in town in the headline of this piece. I hear the younger generation talk of las las, when they speak of a final situation or position. If anyone is restive over a matter, and they want to say he will be fine at last, they just say: he will be fine las las. The same will happen to enemies of our country, who rejoice when negative things happen in the polity. They will lose las las, and then be gentle by force, as Nigeria is God’s project. It is bigger than anyone, and no matter the antagonism they have to government of the day, no matter the antipathy they have for the President, and for other people serving the country, they will lose las las. And become gentle. By force. This came out in bold relief last week, as the abduction saga of over 300 schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, came to a positive denouement. A fortnight ago, when President Muhammadu Buhari proceeded to his hometown in Daura, Katsina State, on a well deserved one week private visit, an uncanny kind of welcome was given to him by bandits long troubling different parts of the country. They spirited away over 300 schoolboys, and began to make all sorts of demands of government, before the boys could be released. The development gave us a sense of deja vu. In April 2014, an equally large number of schoolgirls had been kidnapped from a school in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents. Till today, the girls are not fully recovered. Also in February 2018, another abduction of scores of schoolgirls took place at Dapchi, Yobe State. Eventually, almost all the girls were recovered, save for Leah Sharibu, who was reportedly held back because she refused to renounce her Christian Faith. Horrendous. Despicable. Now, while there are similitudes between Chibok, Dapchi, and Kankara, the significant difference is the response by the different governments in power. When Chibok occurred, the then Goodluck Jonathan-led government demurred. They balked. They said no abduction happened, and that it was an attempt at negative propaganda by the then party in opposition, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to get power. By the time government wisened up, the abductors had gone far, and the trail was cold. They couldn’t recover the girls, not until the Buhari government came a year later, and a large chunk of the hapless abductees were brought back. Some are still unaccounted for till today. When Dapchi happened some years later, the Buhari government behaved differently. It swung into action, went after the abductors, and through a combination of deft factors, the girls were brought back. Except Leah Sharibu. With Kankara on our hands, despite the strident cacophony of the market, President Buhari kept his cool, and went to work. And the needful was done. The boys were recovered after about six days in captivity. While the saga lasted, and government was working night and day, enemies of the land were on overdrive, doing a jig, hopping from one leg to the other in a macabre dance. It was time to play evil politics once again. It was time to generate opprobrium for the President, and display hatred for their own land. In 2014, there had been #Bring Back Our Girls, which contributed to dealing the government of the day mortal blows, and it was voted out a year later. So, the enemies thought they had a sucker punch at their disposal. They came up with #Bring Back Our Boys, and had reportedly printed ten million T-Shirts, which they wanted to use in prosecuting their self-serving crusade. Were they interested in the welfare of the Kankara boys, nor in the travails of their parents? Not at all. They were only actuated by vengeance, and the political capital they could get out of it. Their logic (or is it illogic) was clear. If #Bring Back Our Girls brought down a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government, then #Bring Back our Boys must also undo the APC government. There are many thoughts in the heart of man, but it is the counsel of God that shall stand. As the government worked, fervent prayers were also being made by people of goodwill. Everything coalesced, and worked together for the good of the country, of the boys, their parents, and of President Buhari. The boys were brought back, intact, unharmed, and not a hair was missing from their heads. To God be the glory. The enemies had lost las las. They first lost their voices particularly on social media. They vanished after the boys were released. But instead of admitting final defeat, instead of throwing up their hands in surrender, saying that this government was smarter than they thought, they became like Janus, the mythical creature with two faces, and began to speak from two different mouths. Listen to one of them, who has been overtaken by bile and hatred for the Buhari government. While the boys were being held, she had declared: “In October, US military forces rescued their one citizen held hostage by terrorists within our territory. Buhari as Commander-in-Chief of Nigerian Army, should please accord highest priority to the lives of 333 #Kankara students and seek US support immediately.” In other words, she believed there was an abduction, and it was time to put pressure on a man she didn’t like. After the boys were recovered, what did Madam Red Card say? “Maybe the President sent the children on an excursion to terrorists so that they can release the children at will to him. He needs to tell us exactly what happened with the Kankara kids.” Does anybody still take the woman serious? The Good Book says such people are “in the gall of bitterness and bondage of iniquity.” From such, please run away. Anyone steeped in hatred against his or her country, and still goes to church or mosque, or even to herbalists, is very far from God. When such people fast, they are simply on hunger strike. When they pray, they simply blubber. But you know the good news? God is interested in this entity called Nigeria. Most times, we live dangerously, but He always pulls us back from the edge of the brink. Those who hate the President for no just cause, who wish evil for their own country, are just injuring their own souls. They will fail las las, and become gentle by force. May God always stand by Nigeria. May He always do us good. May He perfect all that concerns us. Amen, somebody! Compliments of the season, dear readers. *Adesina is Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT FG'S FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER: VP SETS UP TECHNICAL TEAM TO FACILITATE 5-YEAR ACTION PLAN ON NUTRITION *Osinbajo charges National Committee: "We have to solve malnutrition issues." In the Federal Government's resolve to frontally address the problems of hunger and malnutrition in the country, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN has set up an ad-hoc Technical Advisory Group to support the implementation of the 5-year National Multi-Sectoral Plan of Action on Nutrition (NMPAN). The Vice President constituted the technical advisory group earlier in the week when he called a virtual meeting of the National Committee on Food and Nutrition, a week after the National Council on Nutrition adopted the Plan of Action. Membership of the advisory group is drawn from the Office of the Vice President, Nigerian Governors Forum, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Nutrition Partners Forum, Organised Private sector, Academia/ Research, Scaling Up Nutrition Secretariat at the Federal Ministry of Health ( FMOH), Civil Society groups-and the UN-Nutrition. Noting the mandate and composition of the team, Prof. Osinbajo said on Tuesday that “the technical advisory group will provide high-level strategic advice and support to the Secretariat of the National Council on Nutrition on the National Policy on Food and Nutrition's vision and strategy, thereby facilitating nutrition positioning and comparative advantage to enable maximum impact.“ According to the Vice President, “for the next few months, this group composed of select members of the National Council on Nutrition who are heads of major MDAs and agencies will have the following Mandate: “To provide technical assistance to the NCN and Secretariat, and facilitate inter and intra-agency coordination, supervision and monitoring, and implementation of the National Multi-sectoral Plan of Action on Nutrition.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo noted that the assignment would be executed by, “developing a synthesised work plan for National Multisectoral Plan of Action on Nutrition; identifying and documenting the roles of each sector and MDA, as well as the relationship(s) between these roles and the achievement of nutrition outcomes, based on the NMPAN.” He added that the group will “work with the newly constituted National Committee on Food and Nutrition to define and train the secretariat on the capacity needs for the development and implementation of nutrition programs and projects as defined by the NMPAN and; develop a comprehensive advocacy, information and education strategy for the NMPAN” Stating the significance of the group’s assignment, Prof Osinbajo said “we need more than ever to think holistically if we are to solve the issues of malnutrition, in my opinion we have embarked on a new era, where collaboration and active engagement of stakeholders to assist with implementing the NMPAN is embedded in our agenda and should propel us forward.” The National Council on Food and Nutrition chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at its last meeting approved the action plan titled the “National Multi-Sectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition (NMPFAN) 2021-2025” with a target of addressing nutrition and related problems across the country. Today at its monthly meeting, the National Economic Council, NEC, received a briefing on the coronavirus disease pandemic in Nigeria and notes with serious concern the increasing number of cases in many States across the country. NEC is alarmed that the current trends are now approaching or surpassing the levels reached during the lockdown imposed at the height of the epidemic earlier in the year. The trends also show that more and more younger people are getting infected. While many of the young victims may be asymptomatic or recover without serious illness, they pass the virus to older and more vulnerable people, especially people with pre-existing health conditions, who develop serious illnesses and may easily lose their lives in the process. Sadly, the country is now experiencing a huge resurgence of COVID-19 patients needing intensive care and the existing health facilities are fast becoming overwhelmed. NEC notes that this increase is being accelerated by non-compliance with the non-pharmaceutical interventions advised by government, including the wearing of masks, limiting of gatherings, especially indoors and the washing/sanitization of hands. NEC, therefore, wishes to reemphasize the importance of these measures. Particularly as we approach the end of the year and the social gatherings associated with the holiday season, we must avoid activities or behavior that may aggravate the situation and necessitate another lockdown. Members of the Council, therefore, resolved to enlarge its current COVID-19 Ad-Hoc Committee led by the Governor of Delta State, and further mandates the Committee to URGENTLY consider and propose additional measures to manage the current situation. Meanwhile, NEC firmly resolves to advocate rigorous and strict enforcement of the non-pharmaceutical interventions listed below: 1. Restrict all physical gatherings and instead opt for virtual meetings, whenever possible. If physical meetings must be held, ensure there is adequate ventilation of the room, limit the number of attendees, wear face masks, maintain a physical distance of at least two metres and adhere to other public health measures. 2. No mask, no entry, no service - all staff members, visitors and customers entering workplaces, shops, entertainment or business premises must wear a face mask that should cover the mouth and nose at all times, and should not remove them, especially if speaking to another person in close proximity. 3. Temperature checks must be carried out on all employees and customers entering office and business premises (any person with a temperature 38 degrees Celsius or above, should be denied entry and advised to go for a health check). 4. All office and business premises must have a handwashing station with running water and soap or hand sanitizer at the entrance. Employers and business owners have a responsibility to ensure hand sanitizers are always refilled and soap and water always available. 5. Office, shops and business premises must be well-ventilated and cleaned regularly throughout the day, ensuring that frequently touched surfaces like desks, countertops, work stations, railings, door handles, are cleaned and disinfected. An occupational health and infectious diseases preparedness plan must be in place, in case an employee, customer or visitor becomes unwell. The continued spread of COVID-19 puts increased pressure on our already fragile health systems and threaten Nigeria's economy. Traditional, social and religious leaders are therefore urged to play their own part by promptly taking responsible and decisive actions to help stop the spread and upsurge of the virus in Nigeria. States are also encouraged to take any further steps as may be considered necessary in their areas. Members of the National Economic Council also commiserated with families of the Kankara schoolboys who were abducted by terrorists in Katsina State while also consoling with the entire people and government of the State. NEC ON THE ABDUCTION OF THE KANKARA SCHOOL BOYS NEC expressed outrage on the kidnapping of the boys in their school premises and utterly condemned the brazen act of the abductors as not only criminal and lawless but a deliberate attempt to sow seeds of fear in people. The members while supporting immediate steps already taken by the Federal and State governments to rescue the boys, urged for more effective collaboration between security agencies and the communities to ensure that such despicable act does not repeat itself anywhere in the country.
