GIORGIO'S EURO COLUMN With Champions League football just around the corner, we turn to friend of the club Giorgio Chinaglia to give an insight into what lays ahead on our European campaign for 2007/8. Giorgio, formerly of Lazio and the New York Cosmos, met up with the side on the pre-season trip to Los Angeles, where he filled us in on the team's preparations for the season. As well as appearing in the 1974 World Cup, he led Lazio to their first ever league championship. He now co-presents the True Blue Chelsea radio show on Sirius radio, and is an expert on European football. Below he tells us a little about our draw, next week's opponents Rosenborg, and the teams that could be heading to Moscow in May. Chelsea have been drawn in a good group because there were a lot of quality teams in the draw, more so than in the previous years. There were a lot of teams that could have made the situation very difficult for Chelsea - just look at Manchester United, theirs is the toughest group Rosenborg are the weakest team of all. Not to underestimate them because they have always been a Champions League team, but the calibre of players should make it a comfortable situation for Chelsea. Valencia is a team Chelsea knows, it is not something new. We know how they play, we know the tactics and as we know, José loves a tactical situation, so that is the biggest threat I think to Chelsea. Some times Valencia can play very well, sometimes it is like they are not on the field, it's amazing. Chelsea have had a good start to the season too, whereas other sides, Manchester United for instance, have struggled. Man Utd have a lot of problems because of injuries, you cannot expect injuries, the Rooney situation, the Ronaldo situation, these are the things you cannot take into account. They are having the same problems Chelsea did last season. With two goalkeepers out and John Terry out, you cannot replace the best players. You can have a large squad but the big players, I don't care who you are, you can't replace them. The players that are the mainstay, Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, you can't replace them. The injury over Lampard, it is not easy to substitute. You can substitute over one or two games but if someone is out for a month or five or six weeks, you are going to be in big trouble. It's a strong competition this year, with many teams capable of lifting that trophy. Just looking at the Italian sides, there are some serious contenders. Milan has won it seven times so they know all the ins and outs of the Champions League, they have been in finals something like ten times. Roma, I'm not so sure. Lazio is a young team, inexperienced. Inter are like Valencia, Jekyll and Hyde. Great games and they go and lose 5-0 to Barcelona in an exhibition game. For the English teams, Man Utd have the most difficult path in the Champions League, but Arsenal and Liverpool are in the same situation as Chelsea -they have a good draw.

MOURINHO TREATS EVERY GAME THE SAME The players arrive back from international duty and resume training at Cobham this afternoon in preparation for the Blackburn game. José Mourinho thinks that their mentality for any match should be the same as it was last season. Chelsea beat Blackburn 3-0 when we last played at Stamford Bridge in January. Chelsea were defending our championship title then but Mourinho believes, whether your title holders or hopefuls, there is no change in the approach to a game. 'I cannot see the difference between defending a title and trying to win a title back. When you win the title, in the next season you want to win every game to be champions again and retain the title,' said Mourinho. 'When we lose the title we want to win every game to bring the title back to Chelsea, I don't see the difference,' he added. 'For us the aim of every competition and every game is to win but of course we cannot win every game, of course we will draw, of course we will lose, but the approach to every game is no different.' Whether defending the title or trying to win it back, Mourinho considers the Barclays Premier League the ultimate domestic challenge. 'I think winning the Premier League is always a big achievement, I think it is one of the best leagues in the world. Forgive me Spanish and Italians but for me it is the best. 'I feel in this moment the Premier League is the best league in the world, improving year after year. 'It is a big achievement to win, like I think it's a big achievement for the teams at the bottom to survive and not be relegated. For people to achieve objectives in the Premier League, it is very difficult.' |
