Subject: Katrina: Nigerian Prof Niyi Osundare Experience

This was really hell.

From: Niyi Osundare

Subject: I am Alive
Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2005 12:19:39 -0700 (PDT)

This is my first real internet access since the
disaster struck...

I can't thank you enough for your concern and care.
It's been all so overwhelming. My wife and I are alive
and, after passing through five horrendous "evacuation
centers", have been allocated to the Red Cross
shelter in Birmingham, Alabama.
The nightmare of the past seven days is simply
unimaginable. We very narrowly escaped drowning in our
own house. Pursued by an 8-foot high toxic flood
water (15 feet in the street outside our door), we
were forced up a stuffy, airless attic, where we were
holed up for 26 hours, with no food, no water, no
prospect of any rescue. We were only saved by the
fortuitous intervention of a neighbour who heard our
shout for help when he came round with his rescue boat
to pick up something from his own house. With life
vests provided by him, we managed to swim out of our
house, leaving everything we had behind. Right now,
all our clothes, books, academic and professional
credentials, trave documents, computers,, manuscripts,
etc etc are submerged in the dirty waters of the New
Orleans flood. Hell has no other name...

We deeply appreciate your concern. Kindly pass on our
gratitude to all on your listserve.

Yours in the Eye of the Storm

Niyi Osundare

Where did you see this pls ? I mean this whole letter from prof Niyi Osundare

Romance / Re: The One You Love or the One Who Loves You? by mycutiepie(f): 12:02am On Sep 08, 2005
I will surely go with the one that loves me and as time goes on, he will love me cos i had this guy who really loved me and the parents, let me use the word family are the sweetest family i had ever know but the unfortunate part is: I DON'T LOVE HIM. I just want him as a friend and nothing more. BUT the other side of the coin is..OOPS! I just mentioned the name of my upcoming movie shocked . Well, the beans has been spilled. The one I love though he loves me as he claims and feels that maybe cos am madly in love is a cheat and was keeping a gal under his roof hile i was stuggling in campus to make something out of life. So , I will say" Ki olorun ma je ka gbe egun elegun, oko/aya tiwa ni ki olrun fi dawa lola" LOVE is crazy and LOVE is pain. cry
Health / Re: HIV/AIDS by mycutiepie(f): 11:54pm On Sep 07, 2005
Magic Johnson is not cured yet, he is still living with it but the drugs are there to aid him. I admire the dude's courage and level of success.

HIV/AIDS is REAL and It's a deadly disease that has no cure except God in His mercies really perfrm his miracle, I don't doubt God's works but human beings that claimed they have found the cure. Let's take a glance at the socio-global epidemic:

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a health condition in which a person is affected by a series of diseases because of poor immunity. HIV by itself is not an illness and does not instantly lead to AIDS. An HIV infected person can lead a healthy life for several years before s/he develops AIDS.

I believe HIV/AIDS is not a fast killing disease/illness but the people that got infected die so soon or get so lean and thin because the moment they found out they were positive, their lives took a dramastic turn and they start thinking and develop other heart related illnesses.

The spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria is caused by ignorance. I can recollect in my secondary school, when we were having Biology class, and  the topic-PUBERTY comes up, everyone  felt shy and didn't want the teacher to treat the topic as he wanted to because the girls didn't want the guys to hear about their breast , menstruation or the hair on their armpits. As I believe this is still happening in our secondary schools, we need to introduce real sex education as a core subjects in school. When the students don't want to hear about how their body works or changes , how will they be able to handle the opposite sex and this is where tennage pregnancy comes in because both individuals are ignorant. Same with HIV/AIDS, most youths and adults believe it's something among americans, or let me use the word"oyinbo" as they call them. We mustn't sit back and let this epdemic eat up our leaders of tomorrow. We all must join hands together for a HIV/AIDS free nation thogh it might take a while but it's possible.

Crime / Re: Atiku's ABTI Academy Complex in Yola Set Ablaze by mycutiepie(f): 11:16pm On Sep 07, 2005
@ Kenflavor, why you dey vex cos of my name, I fit lend you for a week. Anyways back to your comment:
Burning properties or causing riots isn't the solution , I hate it so much when i read that some youths are fighting, causing riots and killing. These rich people are not affected ,instead the poor masses are been killed. likewise burning up atiku's mansions, schools or whatever doesn't remove a rib from his body. Have u forgotten that he didn't work for the money? if he had worked for the money then , burning his properties might be a great loss.
So We need RESOLUTION, I agree with you smiley but how do we (youths) intervene? We all need to act wisely and not foolishly causing pains to the poor. My own intention is for us all to gather and get trained, get some companies to provide us ammunition and support. Then we go to Aso rock and other Big shots hidden place of abode and hold them or their loved ones hostage or better still eradicate them. I wouldn't say we should kill them cos God says " Thou shall not kill" but in the same bible there is a verse that translates into" If your right hand want to make you fall, cut it off" But whichever one you guys are into, am ready cos the suffering is too much.
