Towncrier247: Why No Afropop Artistes Can Win A Grammy - High-life Singer, De-code
The recent statement by HipTV boss, Ayo Animashaun, that the Grammy Awards is not for Nigerians, has continue to generate reactions from different quarters.
Also reacting to the statement is Nigerian High-Life singer Kingsley C. Egwu popularly known as De-Code.
According to De-Code who spoke to with the press in Lagos, musicians winning the Grammies in Africa are musically not the mate of many of the young artistes clamouring for the awards in the country recently.
De-Code stated that the musicians who can can dream of being nominated are the artistes whose music are more traditional and original.
"I just laugh at many Afropop artistes saying that they want to win the Grammy. Is it with the type of music many Nigerian artistes are singing now? I agree with Ayo Animashaun,Grammy is not for Nigerians. And i will explain further. First let me encourage all Nigerian artistes to sell their culture through music. You can't sell ice to the Eskimos; the only thing we can genuinely own and sell which the outside world will easily buy is our uniqueness, rather than trying to be like them. Many reigning Nigerian artistes today still try to sound like Drake, Chris Brown or Migos. Winning an award like the Grammy is not even by hanging out with American stars, featuring them or they knowing you. It’s more about the unique thing you bring to the music table. You don't expect the organizers to put an R&B artiste from Africa on the nominees categories with real Americans, not to talk of that artiste winning when too many brilliant artistes in America don't have a nomination let alone win; just like you don't expect Ayo Animashaun to add Drake and Beyonce to the Best Rap and Best R&B categories in the Headies Awards respectively. Perhaps, it’s easy to be linked to the Grammy somehow if a foreign artiste features you and the song wins a Grammy, but we are talking about you owning one yourself", De-Code explains.
De-Code explains further; "You would realize that the African musicians who have either won or nominated in the past such as Angelique Kidjo, King Sunny Ade, Femi Kuti, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ali Farka Touré, Soweto Mass Choir, Youssou N’dour, Owuor Arunga and many more are not “commercial” artistes. Their music even sound like folklore and many of these musicians have won multiple times. They are not the mate of anyone of the currently reigning crop of Nigerian artistes when you talk about their musical prowess. These people, aside their music being highly indigenous, are usually nominated under the International or World Music categories, which is the only category reserved for Africans and other outsiders. And who says we need to win Grammies to validate our talents?"

Yemight474: Good morning. My name is Adeshina Waliyu, a 100 level student(lautech ogbomosho). There is a matter I have been worrying about, due to fear, I have fall in love with my phone searching for info about the issue. And nairaland is one of the site that I always tend to, to know about what I don't know because I believe there are many talented people and experienced people that can put me through.
I have read many topics on this nairaland that relate to the issue that's bothering me yet I still feel like I haven't see what I need. May be it's because most of the topic I read were posted like 4 to 5 years ago, sorry to say I feel like Nigeria then is different from today's Nigeria.
The issue that is bothering me, that makes me need the counsel or advice of people is about the course I was given. I's a pre degree student 2015/2016, I chose Civil Engineering but unfortunately I scored 255 in Pre degree and 245 in jamb, so I was given Pure and Applied Physics. Though at that time I was discouraged but later I got over it (Since physics is my best subject). Then I decided to study physics but getting to 100 level, what am hearing from people around me and my brothers is that I should change my course.. What they are telling me is that physics is among the best course in the world but not here in Nigeria. They said it's better to cross to Engineering. Though am just a 19 year old boy but I think it's better to start thinking about my future...... So I have been in a dilemma since because my decision will have Great impact to my future. I can't make a rash decision. That's why I decided to hear from people that will tell me what I don't know. Please is it true that the hope for science student especially physics graduates in time of job in this Nigeria is not much . I know life is unpredictable and we should follow our instinct. But it is better to know more. I will be very grateful if you can spare some of your time to give your opinion..

Factfinder1: Wife of APC National leader, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has asked members of the senate to stop linking the travails of embattled Senator Dino Melaye to the Buhari-led government. Speaking while the senate deliberated on the matter this morning, Tinubu who last year had a faceoff with Melaye, said;
''If we are talking about a particular issue, we should stay with it but when we are bringing in a government that a lot of people also supported to be here, using whatever happened to implicate the government, I think I am against that. We should face the issues. I am not in support of what happened to Dino. If we have anything against the executive, we have the leadership here who is supposed to go and meet with Mr. President. This government is only three years old compared to 16 years of rot. It has only been in power for 3 years and inherited a lot of trouble'.
Mztarstrechy: The lawmaker also told the Senate that Melaye is currently at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Na’Allah and his colleague who visited the hospital were denied access to Melaye.Na'Allah said...
“We went to the National Hospital this morning where Senator Dino was alleged to have been kept from yesterday and we confirmed that he was brought yesterday at about 11pm,” he began.
“We spoke to the doctor who is in charge of the ICU and they assured us that they are doing everything humanly possible to stabilize him but he is in the intensive care unit. We tried as much as possible to see him but we were refused access. The instruction that was left by the Police is that only Senator Abu Ibrahim are permitted to see him.
“As at the time we were leaving the hospital, an issue that the feeding of Dino has become an issue because the Police are not willing to feed him because of the situation. They are afraid. The hospital has equally expressed reservations about feeding Senator Dino.
“A medical personnel from the Police who is working together with the trauma surgeon handling Dino told us that whoever is bringing the food for Dino must taste it. There is also a report that Dino has asthma so a chest surgeon was the one seen while we were leaving.
“Lastly, there was insistence to remove him from the National hospital but the management told them that an undertaken must be signed that whatever happens will be on them. That is what is keeping Dino at the National Hospital till date because nobody is willing to sign,” he added.
After several contributions from lawmakers, the Senate resolved to adjourn plenary and visit Melaye at the hospital.
