The annual Salary of the President of Nigeria is N14058820.00k.

In 4 years, it would be N56,235,280.00k.

So why would anyone apply for a Job with N100M just to earn N56,235,280.00k

Logical/rational question.

Science/Technology / Machine Translation Research Wins Wikimedia Foundation Research Award 2021 by naijadiplomat(m): 7:56pm On Apr 20, 2021
“Participatory Research For Low-resourced Machine Translation: A Case Study In African Languages” has emerged winner of the Wikimedia Foundation Research Award of the Year 2021.

The award was presented by Jimmy Wales, the Founder of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Foundation.

The 18-page research work published in November 2020 (publisher: Association for Computational Linguistics) was undertaken by a total of 47 authors and the Masakhane community with about 18 Nigerians directly involved.

The research focused on the task of Machine Translation (MT) in playing a crucial role for information accessibility and communication worldwide and contends that despite immense improvements in MT over the past decade, MT is centered around a few high-resourced languages and thus, participatory research as a means to involve all necessary agents are required in the MT development process.

The research, demonstrated the feasibility and scalability of participatory research with a case study on MT for African languages including Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, Efik, Edo, Esan, Hausa, Igbo, Isoko, Fon, Kikuyu, Luo, Nigerian Pidgin, Tiv, KiSawhili, Yoruba, Urhobo, Shona, Kamba, isiZulu, Lingala, etc.

The research authors stated that its implementation has led to a collection of novel translation datasets, MT benchmarks for over 30 languages, with human evaluations for a third of them, and enables participants without formal training to make a unique scientific contribution. Benchmarks, models, data, code, and evaluation results are released at https://github.com/masakhane-io/masakhane-mt.

For context, Ricky Macharm, one of the authors of the research paper stated:

“In Europe we have languages with very few speakers yet they have so many Wikipedia articles but in Africa where languages like Yoruba and Hausa with far more speakers have fewer or no articles for the native speakers to read.”

Edward Dixon had also remarked:

“Impressive work, also this table from the paper is heartbreaking. For reference, Irish (spoken daily by < 100K?) has 53,000 Wikipedia articles, topping Yoruba, Shona, Zulu and Igbo’s combined (with a total 100 million speakers).”

According to Wikimedia Foundation on the research:

“Describe a novel strategy for participatory research around “machine translation.

Shows how this approach can overcome challenges for a range of low-resourced languages.

Presents a inspiring case study of a vibrant community working toward building machine translation for African languages spoken by millions.

An inspiring example of work around knowledge equity.

A range of potential applications for Wikimedia projects.”

Education / Oluwatoni Adesanya Wins Second Prize In KHREF Essay Competition 2020 by naijadiplomat(m): 12:17am On Feb 05, 2021
Oluwatoni Adesanya, a student of Greensprings School, Lagos, has won the second prize in Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation’s (KHREF) essay competition 2020.

Oluwatoni Adesanya’s essay titled: “Human rights violations masquerading as COVID-19 interventions: The Nigerian experience”, was adjudged second best, and awarded $500 prize in the international competition, which received about 100 entries from 17 different countries.

According to Oluwatoni Adesanya:

“This winning came as a surprise to me because it was a bit difficult to write the essay at first. My inspiration came from the problems that surfaced in Nigeria during the pandemic and the looting of palliatives donated by the private sector. To do the writing, I had to carry out a research on human rights, the origin of COVID-19, and how governments across the world responded to the pandemic. Websites of credible international organisations such as the United Nations, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) were valuable for my research. I also read reliable Nigerian newspapers, and consulted websites of CACOVID and human rights organisations in Nigeria.

I want to say thank you to my English teachers for teaching me how to conduct proper research and hone my writing skills. I also want to thank my parents and relations for their constant support.”

She noted that her essay was written to enlighten the public on how some COVID-19 policies breached human rights, and how low-income and poor Nigerians have been badly affected by these policies.

Adesanya explained that her writing was to draw attention to some of the problems confronting Nigerians and call government’s attention to them.

Principal at Greensprings School, Anthony, campus, Mrs. Magdalene Okrikri, expressed satisfaction with Adesina’s achievements adding that she was the valedictorian of elementary school class of 2020.

Mrs. Magdalene Okrikri said:

“I am happy that she continued performing exceptionally in everything. She has shown that all the quality education received from Greensprings Pre-school, Elementary and now Secondary School, is paying off extremely well. I know she would win many more awards both locally and internationally.”

The Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (KHREF) is a non-profit corporation established in 2008. It seeks to motivate students to contribute their effort towards creating a world where everyone’s human rights are realised, by sponsoring essay contests and other human rights-oriented academic activities.

Sports / South-south Team Win Under-17 Girls Cricket National Championship [2021] by naijadiplomat(m): 6:41pm On Feb 03, 2021
South-South Team emerge winner of the Under-17 Girls Cricket National Championship [2021] at the Edo Boys High School Cricket Oval on the 31st of January 2021.

South-South Team teenage sensation, Lucky Piety, was the centre of attraction of the National Finals.

Rising from her record-breaking century at the opening game against South-west Team where she became the first Nigerian cricketer to achieve such feat in a T-20 match, Piety gave a commanding performance at the closing event.

Vice President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata said beyond the excellent performance of the South-south team who won all their three matches at the finals of the girls’ tournament, the Federation was more impressed at the individual talents that were thrown up at the championship.

According to Uyi Akpata:

“When a teenager sets a national T20 record, that is a great achievement and huge leap for cricket development.

We also had great fielding implementation from the South-east team and great bowling actions from a couple of players too. The good thing here is that beyond Piety Lucky, we have a number of great show by players from other regions as well. We are proud of the developments from the different regions.

Performances from these girls have justified the investment in various grassroots developments at different regions of the country and more importantly, we have great players that can be drafted into camp ahead of national assignments.”

Piety was awarded the Best “Batman’, and the Most Valuable Player of the girls’ championship. Rejoice Assam was the Bowler of the series with Uba Herrieta voted the Best Fielder.

The coach of the winning side, Esewi Peter, stated:

“This team is made of players from Edo, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states. Credit also goes to all the Regional Developmental Officers that worked on each of the players.”

Speaking after the event, Piety said that she was grateful for the accolades and believes she was fortunate to have played well, as there were other equally talented batters and bowlers in her team.

North-central team finished second behind South-south after defeated in the finals by seven wickets. The South-east team placed third while the classification match for the fourth and fifth team was won by the South-west who dislodged the North-west team.

The Boys’ final of the National Under 17 Cricket Championship will hold from February 4th to 7th at the Edo Boys High School Cricket Pitch.

Politics / Political Factors That Improves The National Image/Reputation Of Nigeria(ns) by naijadiplomat(m): 9:03am On Mar 01, 2020
Introduction

A lot of countries in the world demonstrate sensitivity, care and preservation of their national image or reputation expending vast resources in order to improve and maintain it at all levels. The perception of a country’s image influences its relevance and authority in the comity of nations. A positive image of a country attracts prestige, respect and investments. On the other hand, a country’s bad image would reduce its influence and deny it strategic benefits in the international political/economic system.

Nigeria has over the years made strategic efforts in order to create, portray and sustain a positive and appealing image – both nationally and internationally.

At this time, more work is still required to be done.

In order for Nigeria to improve its reputation on the positive side, certain political factors must be employed. The recognition and adherence to these factors can improve the reputation of the country. These factors include: an effective foreign diplomatic engagement, trustworthy media (public relations), security and commitment to good governance.

1. Foreign Policy

Foreign policy, which deals with a way country relates externally with other countries, is a crucial factor that determines how a country is perceived or related with. Image making is an essential feature of Nigeria’s foreign policy. In essence, Nigeria’s image can be improved positively by rebranding its foreign policy by engaging in effective diplomatic approaches (a viable, visionary and holistic foreign policy roadmap, maintaining competent diplomatic missions, lobbying networks), engaging purposefully with and incorporating Nigerians in the Diaspora, active, responsive and genuine participation in relevant economic and foreign humanitarian missions.

By redirecting its diplomatic compass, transforming and realigning its foreign policy architecture to reflect the trends and demands of the ever-dynamic modern world, Nigeria can boost its reputation at the international level.

2. Media (Public Relations)

Improving on the reputation and national brand of Nigeria involves a well-planned, systemic and sustainable effort to reposition its image through the change or transformation of perception.

By transforming the national image of Nigeria, the negative perception of Nigeria by the international community would be changed. Nigeria’s government can drive the national identity of Nigeria and Nigerians by prioritizing the communication and encouragement of citizens who are making noteworthy, positive and innovative contributions to world civilization. This can be achieved with the power of an objective and trustworthy media and public relations.

A well thought out and carefully implemented image rebranding will reposition Nigeria as a modern and progressive nation, improve national life and boost its positive image.

3. Security

Security is defined as a measure taken by the state to protect itself against all acts designed to endanger it or impair its effectiveness.

Nigeria has a long period of contention with terror and insecurity, which has posed a threat to its corporate existence. This has attracted negative ratings and perceptions to Nigeria, including diplomatic statements by other countries warning their citizens to avoid traveling to some States in Nigeria.

The government should take concrete steps and consolidate efforts in order to eliminate all outstanding security threats in the country including armed robbery, terrorism, human trafficking, and kidnapping.

Success in tackling the security challenges in the country will attract positive security indicators, improve Nigeria’s image as a safe and secure for Nigerians and foreigners.

4. Good Governance

Corruption and lack of transparency attracts negative perception and ratings from international organisations and countries. Corruption includes bribery, fraud and other offenses, which offend the laws of the land and confer unjust benefits on the perpetrators. Corruption militates against efficiency, transparency and integrity in any system it exists in.

Nigeria’s bad image as a poorly governed country has been a result of weak institutions, disregard for the rule of law, lack of accountability in governance, widespread corruption (massive embezzlement of public funds and nepotism).

Election is the single most important indicator of the presence of a democratic government as citizens choose and confer legitimacy on their leaders and representatives. By reviewing its electoral process and securing its integrity and transparency, Nigeria would improve to a great extent, its reputation as a democratic society. For Nigeria’s reputation to improve, elections must be conducted in a manner devoid of fraud, violence, manipulations and other vices. A viable, transparent, independent and trusted electoral process will boost Nigeria’s image as a democratic society.

Furthermore, in order to attract positive ratings and improve the image of Nigeria positively, the government and all citizens must commit themselves to the task of shunning corruption, promoting and enthroning transparency and fiscal responsibility in policies and governance process.

Conclusion

It is vital that Nigeria should wear a positive image and improve its reputation. This is especially necessary to avoid the limitations and hardships that are imposed on Nigerians as a result of Nigeria’s negative perception at the international level, which affects the dignity of the Nigerian people as well as serve as hindrance to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) needed for the acceleration of the country’s economic growth.

Improving Nigeria’s image can only be achieved through tact, strategy and honest efforts, which would be targeted at transforming Nigeria’s foreign policy and foreign relations, media and national identity management (public relations), improved security of life and property, and ensuring transparency and integrity in governance and integrity in policies and public affairs.
