Chesapeake Energy Sinks on Report It's Preparing a Bankruptcy Filing

A report says Chesapeake Energy has held talks with creditors about a possible loan that could keep it operating while it navigates bankruptcy proceedings.

Shares of Chesapeake Energy (CHK) - Get Report were falling sharply Thursday after it was reported the oil and gas company was preparing a potential bankruptcy filing.

Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, said Chesapeake Energy has held talks with creditors about a possible loan that could keep it operating while it navigates bankruptcy proceedings.

The loan, referred to as debtor-in-possession financing, could total roughly $1 billion, one of the sources told Reuters.

Chesapeake Energy's talks about a potential bankruptcy filing are in the early stages, and the company has made no final decisions about how it plans to address its debts, the sources cautioned, Reuters said.

Chesapeake Energy didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Shares of Chesapeake Energy fell more than 41% in in trading Thursday to $15.75.

While the stock has fallen about 80% this year, shares have had a recent strong run as oil prices have rebounded from unprecedented negative territory.

Last week, the oil and hydrocarbon driller announced it adopted a poison pill to thwart any takeover attempts spurred by its low stock price.

Earlier this month, Chesapeake shareholders approved a reverse stock split of one share for as many as 200 shares. The company is among the more financially precarious of the oil majors, with $192 million of bonds coming due in August out of a total debt load of more than $9 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Moody's cut Chesapeake’s credit rating into junk territory earlier in April.

I'm a dynamic investor, so even when I buy for short term purpose, I only buy stocks that I'm ready to hold long term in case things don't work out as planned.

My reason for buying JetBlue is because it's a low-cost airline that majorly serves inter-state travellers in the US and some other parts of the Americas. Hence, with the gradual reopening of parts of the Americas, the airline might increase flights within the region this summer. Generally, Delta airline is described as ''too big to fail'' in this sector because of its valuation and projected profitability. Still, I bought American airline instead due to its current price with respect to its valuation. Also note that the US government has launched comprehensive bailout plans for these airlines and the major beneficiaries are Delta, American Airlines, United and Southwest. JetBlue will also get $936 million, which is not bad for a domestic carrier.

Regarding Carnival Cruise Line, some cruise lines are on the verge of bankruptcy but I believe the entire industry can't be whipped out as a result of COVID-19. Also, whatever Saudi Arabia saw in CCL that made them buy a whooping 8% stake in the company earlier this month is a good indicator that the cruise ship giant might be around for years to come. Worst-case scenario, they go by Trump's advice and register as a US company to benefit from the bailout deal.

Finally, high risk equals high reward. Please do your due diligence because US stocks, particularly in the transportation sector, are highly volatile at the moment.

I bought AAL at $10 earlier this week, I guess Monday or Tuesday, but I don't intend to hold long term. Also purchased JetBlue at $8 and CCL at $8(waiting for 100% here, then I'm out).

Do airlines have any hope of resuming flights soon and even if they do how soon can can they return to pre-Covid-19 level. I remember reading that some airlines are about laying off workers. Does any one have a better view of happenings in the industry or may I ask what informed your decision to buy those shares now moreso that you are not a long term player. Who knows, some of may also benefit from your insight

In a nutshell when you buy 1 contact of a call option, its like you are paying a small premium to "borrow" 100 shares for a given period of time. If the stock goes up within that period of time, you can sell the contract and keep the gains. So yes the return can be really huge for a small percentage increase in the stock price but a small percentage decrease will cause a huge loss even as much as 100%. I realize that I trade more options for short term and currently I don't think any broker in Nigeria offer options trading. I try not to spam the thread with option trades so sometimes I buy a few shares if others want to follow in on the trade.

Thank you very much for this prompt response and explanation of option trading. As you are familiar with option trading, may how covered call can help one mitigate again possible loss. Secondly do you know of any platform (broker) in the US through which someone in Nigeria can trade options. Lastly please be kind enough to tutor anyone that might want to explore this financial instrument.

ARIK AIR CAUGHT FIRE AIRBORNE ON LAGOS - ACCRA FLIGHT (06/03/2018)

HORRIBLE FLIGHT EXPERIENCE: A NEAR CRASH INCIDENT ON ARIK AIR FLIGHT FROM LAGOS TO ACCRA ON TUESDAY 06/03/2018

I boarded Arik air flight W3304 to Accra on Tuesday 06/03/2018. The name of the aircraft is STEPHEN. It was a Dash 8 NextGen propeller aircraft. The flight took off precisely 7.20pm (Lagos time)

35 minutes into the 55 minutes flight, I started perceiving something smelling like a burning stuff. Shortly after the guy sitting next to me asked if I perceived any smell of burning stuff and that confirmed my worst fears. Before you could say jack, smoke has filled the cabin. The air hostesses were busy scampering around opening the cabins and the lavatories to check if they could trace the source of the smoke without success.

While that continued, the oxygen masks that were always being advertised during the safety demo prior to take-off couldn't be released instead we were handed tissue papers (otherwise called serviets) to use to cover our noses to minimize and filter out possible carbon monoxide inhalation.

About 5 minutes after, precisely with 15 minutes of flight time remaining, the pilot came on the public address system to inform us that they have smoke coming into the cabin and that they don't know the source and that they have DECLARED EMERGENCY".

At that point we knew that our lives were only in God's hands. Everyone prayed to his/her Gods.

To the glory of God, the flight successfully landed by 8.15pm (7.15pm Accra time) to the waiting of several fire service trucks at Kotoko International airport, Accra.

We were evacuated into a waiting bus with instruction to leave everything behind in the cabin. Sadly there was no Arik official to address us neither was there any manner of first aid attention given to the passengers to manage stress and possible elevated blood pressures.

After a while our cabin luggage were brought to us and we had to leave from there to go through the Ghana immigration to our individual destinations.

I'm highly discouraged that this near crash major incident was not reported in the media 2 days after (today is 08/03/2018) and I suspect a cover up by Arik and the authorities. So I have chosen to use the social media to ensure this news gets out.

Kindly keep forwarding this message till everybody is made aware of the quality and kind of services Arik air gives and the possible cover ups before something terrible happens.
