Politics / Gulak Sues PDP Over Chairmanship Seat by NaijNewsToday: 2:29am On Nov 19, 2015
Mr. Ahmed Gulak, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has dragged the Peoples Democratic Party to court over the delay in appointing the pdp chairman.

Gulak joined the party and its acting National Chairman, Uche Secondus, in the suit he instituted at Court 4 of the Federal Capital Territory High Court. The suit, with number FCT/HC/CV/153/2015, is billed for hearing on November 25.

The former presidential aide, who is interested in becoming the party’s next chairman, told journalists in Abuja on Wedneday that he instituted the suit because of the need to put the pdp back on track.
He argued that the party could not be put back on track without following the constitution.

Gulak recalled that immediately after the party lost the March 28 presidential election, its then chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, resigned his position.

He added that the party’s constitution made it clear that somebody from the North-East, where Mu’azu hails from, should be appointed to replace him.

Gulak regretted that despite this constitutional provision, Secondus, “who is claiming to be the acting chairman”, has refused to initiate the process for the fulfillment of that provision.

He argued that the current National Working Committee of the party was not properly constituted, contending that all acts purported to have been taken by anybody in acting capacity was null and void.

He said,
“Some past leaders and elders of the party went to the NWC and told them that if we want to rebrand the pdp and ensure the party bounces back, we must follow the constitution and properly organise and constitute the organs of our party, especially the NWC and the BoT, where two vacancies exist because both chairmen resigned.

“But it appears that members of the NWC are not ready and willing to comply with the constitutional provision that calls for the replacement of those that resigned.

“I had earlier written and submitted my letter of intent, among others from the North-East that are interested in filling the vacancies; myself, Ambassador Damagun, Alhaji Gambo Lawal, Senator Bala Mohammed and Senator Paul.

“All of us wrote our letters, indicating our interest in filling the vacancy created by Muazu’s resignation. It was incumbent on the NWC to initiate the process where a replacement will be obtained.

“My state (Adamawa) chapter of the party sent a letter to them, recommending from the North-East, but they are hell-bent on flouting the constitution of the party. The constitution of the party is clear that there shall be NWC, which shall be headed by a chairman.

“As it is today, the NWC of the pdp is not properly constituted. And any act or commission or correspondence purported to be made by anybody in acting capacity is null and void. That is why I have gone to court.”

Nairaland / General / Woman Gives Birth, Held In Hospital By Staff For Failure To Pay Her Bill by NaijNewsToday: 3:04pm On Nov 06, 2015

Read below as it was sent in

A 23yrs old Miss Blessing Godwin, from Eket L.G.A in Akwa Ibom state is in urgent need of financial support to rescue her from her predicament. On the 28th of October, 2015, at about6pm exactly, Mrs. Blessing was admitted in the labor room of Ilasamaja Health Center for child delivery. After several hours of delayed parturition with , the head nurse suggested that they would transfer her with immediate effect to another Standard hospital as a result of unavailability of life saving equipment.

In a live interview with VOC NEWS today, Mrs. Blessing Godwin recounted her bewilderment, when she was told to leave the Ilasamaja health center “I was stranded because there was no cash on me. My husband and I stayed from 11pm to 4:30 am the following morning, before we could get assistance to take us to Isolo General Hospital ”. At this point she broke down crying profusely. It took the effort of this reporter to console her before she continued the narration of her ordeal. According to her when they got to Isolo General Hospital, it was another hard luck, as there was no vacant bed for her to be admitted. This incident generated curious attention as the nurse on duty suggested that, if she stayed one more hour, there would be likelihood, that the child might die in her womb.

The only solution left to rescue the poor girl was to rush her to a specialist hospital. Mater Christi is a specialist hospital located at 8, Bishop Okogie Street, off Ago palace way, Balogun B/stop Okota Lagos where the Caesarian was done successfully. And she was delivered of a bouncing baby girl. But unknowingly to her, this was just the begin of her woes, as she and her jobless husband, Mr. Godwin could only pay N50,000 from the hospital bill, with an outstanding bill of N150,000. As a result of the inability to pay up the complete bill, the poor woman has been detained by the hospital management for the past 2-weeks, because she and husband could not afford to pay the outstanding hospital bill.

We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians andlovers of humanity to urgently come to the aid of Mrs Blessing Godwin. She needs the sum of #150,000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand) , to enable her offset the hospital bill, so that the hospital management would “release” her from “incarceration” . The hospital management was glad to receive the VOC News reporter; they confessed that it was a kind gesture for an organization to be interested in humanitarian acts of this kind .

The name and address of the hospital can be verified. Please call Mrs. Blessing Godwin now! 07018162451, 09038948316. No amount of money is too small. Remember that: your only worth in life is the good you do for others.

Health / Nigeria Ebola Survivor Flown To US To Delivered Of Baby by NaijNewsToday: 6:51am On Nov 05, 2015
Ebola-Survivor-3

FIRST Consultant Medical Centre (FCMC) Chief Medical Director (CMD) Dr. Benjamin Ohiaeri has explained why a medical doctor with the hospital and Ebola survivor Dr. Ada Igonoh was delivered of a baby girl at the Greater El-Monte Community Hospital, California, United States (U.S.).

Ohiaeri, at a news conference in Lagos yesterday, said Igonoh was the first post-Ebola survivor to have got pregnant, adding that the hospital could not take chances with her during pregnancy and at the point of child delivery.

“This is because when you survived Ebola, it is difficult to get pregnant, and if you get pregnant, it is difficult to carry the pregnancy, and much difficult to deliver the pregnancy. Ada carried the pregnancy well. She made us proud as a nation,” the hospital’s CMD said.

He added that many tests that could not have been done in the country were carried out on the Ebola survivor.

“We hypothetically assumed so many things and that is how we work as medics. So, we could not afford her some chances. She is a first of firsts. Best decision was America.

“Since her conception, she has been placed under medical surveillance to ensure that her child is Ebola-free. The baby, upon birth, has been certified Ebola-free.

“The baby girl weighs nine pounds and one ounce. Everything about the baby is normal because all tests carried out came back negative. Vanderbelt University Medical Centre did the tests.”

Dr. Ohiaeri said the Association of Nigerian Physicians in America (ANPA) facilitated the transfer of Igonor to the U.S. and that the delivery was done by Dr. Julius Kpaduwa, an obstetrician-gynaecologist in El Monte, CA.

The hospital’s CMD added that Dr. Stella Kpaduwa, a paediatrician, attended to the baby.

“It is a feat for Nigeria as a nation that Ada was delivered by Nigerian-Americans. Many stakeholders were in the delivery room with her – the World Health Organisation (WHO) team, Centre for Disease Control (CDC) team, Global Affairs team, and U.S. government representatives and the chief executive officer (CEO) of the hospital, where she delivered.

“Her husband Mr. Godwin Igono said mother and child are not expected back in the country soon as there is need for the duo to bond and it is satisfactory to the stakeholders to allow them to come back. Once they arrive, there will be celebration,” Dr. Ohiaeri said.

The WHO formally declared Nigeria Ebola-free on October 20, last year.

I have also told people not to speak on my behalf to castigate judges. The tribunal is not the final appellate court on this matter. There is no need of castigating the judiciary. We are not one of those when judgment favours you, you says you have confidence in the judiciary. When it does not favour you, you lose confidence in the judiciary. Politics / Rivers Guber: I Shall Not Be Distracted –wike by NaijNewsToday: 9:27am On Oct 26, 2015
Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike has assured his supporters and members of the Peopes Democratic Party (PDP) in the state that he would certainly prevail over his adversaries and retain his mandate as governor of the state.
This is, as he said, the verdict of the state Election Petitions Tribunal, which annulled his election, will not distract him as he will remain focused on his vision and continue to deliver on the fundamental promises of improving security, massive development of infrastructure and socio- economic empowerment in the state.

Wike, who spoke in a state-wide broadcast to the people of the state yesterday, said apart from the reported malfunctioning of the card readers supplied by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which placed no advantage on any of the contestants, the election took place throughout the state.

The governor said, “We all know that on April 11, 2015, Rivers people in their millions joined the rest of the country, and enthusiastically participated in electing their governor and members of the state House of Assembly.

“Apart from the reported malfunctioning of the card readers supplied by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which placed no advantage on any of the contestants, the election took place throughout ‘the state and was adjudged credible by both local and international observers. The only process, recognised by the current Electoral Act, was used to accredit voters all over the country.

“So far, I am not aware of any state where the election was postponed as a result of failure of card readers. Furthermore, the Court of Appeal in Agbaje v Ambode clearly stated that the partial or non-use of card readers is not the basis for the cancellation of an election.

Nairaland / General / Undergraduate Hacked To Death 2 Months To Wedding In Lagos by NaijNewsToday: 3:21pm On Oct 25, 2015
Tragedy struck at Olorunfunmi Street in Oworo area of Lagos, on Thursday, following the murder of a 32- year-old man, Lawal Afolabi Kunbi, allegedly by a debtor, in a bid to evade repayment.

Kunbi, a business administration student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, reportedly received a telephone call from a private security guard, identified simply as Aliu, who lives on same street with him, to come and collect N32,000 owed him.

The deceased, who owned a provision store, sold his motorcycle to Aliu, in order to raise money to pay his school fees, about a month ago.

However, after receiving the call, Kunbi dashed out of his shop to Aliu’s apartment, adjacent to his shop, obviously optimistic that with the money he would now be able to pay his school fees.

But the unexpected happened

Unknown to Kunbi, who was said to be preparing for his wedding in December, Aliu allegedly had a sinister motive up their sleeves. The bridegroom to be simply disappeared, forcing members of his family to conduct a search for him through out Thursday night.

The search party found the lifeless body of Kunbi around 9am on Friday behind Aliu’s compound, throwing the entire community into mourning. A source said the victim’s five fingers had been chopped off, while marks of violence were apparent all over his body. There also a rope tied round his neck, suggesting that he could have been strangled. The question on everyone’s lip was, who could have killed Kumbi?

Suspects arrested
Five suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the incident. One of the suspects is Aliu.

Early that Friday, Aliu was allegedly seen fetching water from Kunbi’s compound. The number of times he went to fetch water reportedly arouse the curiosity of residents, necessitating the brave ones to ask what he was doing with the unusual volume of water he was fetching. Not satisfied with his explanation, some of the residents, it was learnt, forced their way into his apartment, where they allegedly discovered, to their shock, blood stains all over the place. The suspect was said to have been using the water to clean up the blood stains in his apartment, apparently to cover up his track. Also, shattered louvres were reportedly seen all over the apartment. Consequently, the residents descended on Aliu.

An eye witness told Sunday Vanguard: “When we searched through Kunbi’s telephone, which he left while he rushed to answer the call of death last night (Thursday), we discovered that the last caller was Aliu. When confronted at first, Aliu denied seeing him, insisting rather that a search team be raised to look for him.

What gave him away was the blood stain that was trailed, right from where Kunbi’s body was dumped, to Aliu’s apartment. We also saw a white cloth stained with blood, on the floor and the key of Kunbi’s shop in Aliu’s apartment. When he discovered that the game was up, he pleaded that we should not kill him and disclosed that the plan to kill Kunbi was hatched by his friends”.

We searched for victim – Landlady
Owner of the building, where Kunbi resided, who also spoke to Sunday Vanguard anonymously, said
"I leased out one of my shops to Kunbi two years ago. He was a jolly good fellow and full of wisdom. That was why I always made out time to advise him about life. However, one thing about him was that he kept secrets. Perhaps if he had told one about this, we would have mediated on the payment.

“That fateful night, I sent my daughter to go and lock the gate, only for her to come back to say Kunbi’s shop was still opened at that odd hour. I decided to come down myself to lock the gate and still met the shop opened. I was surprised because it was very much unlike him . He never kept late nights nor lived a frivolous life. I decided to go downstairs to lock the gate myself , with the intention that he would call when he returned. A boy told me he left the shop at about 8pm and, when I asked where he went to, he could not provide answer. I decided to call him on the phone, only to discover it was ringing right in his shop. Two hours later, I called the boy who said he saw Kunbi going out, to find out if he was back but he said no. At that moment, I knew something was wrong and informed my husband.

"To my shock, after my morning devotion, I went out only to see a crowd watching a lifeless body that was covered with nylon. On further enquiry, it was the body of Kunbi!”.

At about 1pm, that Friday, some policemen, from Alonge Oworo Division, arrived the scene with the suspects, who were taken to the apartment where the heinous crime was allegedly committed. All of a sudden, a crowd that had gathered descended on the suspects, to the amazement of the policemen, attempting to carry out a jungle justice. But the move was stopped by the firing of tear gas by the policemen.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation is ongoing and the culprits will be brought to book.

Although the school principal, Grace Ogunyomi, reported the matter to the state government, no immediate action beyond the routine medical attention was provided.

TheNews.ng was gathered that the students were infected in small numbers, but the matter escalated on Wednesday, resulting in government action, after the principal, Mrs. Ogunyomi, made a formal report.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, immediately directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr Olurotimi Ojo, to deploy professionals and drugs to help in stemming the spread of the disease.

The commissioner, however, denied that it was a cholera epidemic, saying it was a gastrointestinal infection popularly called diarrhea.

There were fears that the outbreak resulted from the contamination of the students’ food and water, but a teacher in the school, who spoke to TheNews.ng but would not want to be quoted, said further investigation revealed otherwise.

“What we felt was that, we thought their food and water were infected, but we later gathered that it was not from that source,”
she said.

The Permanent Secretary at the state Ministry of Health, Folakemi Olomojobi, who confirmed the incident, said about 300 students were affected.

He said majority of the affected student had been treated and discharged, while only 20 of them were still being treated at the hospital.

Ms. Ojo said the Ministry of Health had brought in environmental health officials, while many professionals were still being deployed to forestall further spread.

“We alerted the water corporation to chlorinate their water. They have about six boreholes and we have got them chlorinated, because we knew as professionals that the water could be a source,” he said.

“We are trying to look into their environment, so that we can get where such could have broken out. We want to know how they dump their faeces and how they dump their sewage.

“We have taken the blood samples of students infected to the hospital and preliminary test shows that it was not cholera. It was diarrhea and vomiting. We are sending the samples for further test to confirm that it was not cholera.”
She urged members of the public not to panic, saying government would take every decisive action to put the situation under control.

Politics / Tinubu, Atiku Under Pressure To Leave APC? - Thenews.ng by NaijNewsToday: 9:14am On Oct 22, 2015
Their grievances was also the perceived manner in which the nominations were made without adequately consulting the party hierarchy.
The presidential source said: “To a large extent, the governors were not consulted on those picked from our states.

“But the leaders have to bear with the president because it is his constitutional prerogative.”

Bola Tinubu, APC’s national leader, is said to be angry about that as his appointees were unnoticed by the Nigerian leader.

And also that party supporters, who have been in through thickand thin were left out of the process, with new faces, who were neither in the party nor sympathizers of their cause emerging as ministerial appointees – 18 of whom have been confirmed as ministers.

Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s growing influence on President Buhari has reportedly also led to Tinubu being sidelined in nominations.

Tinubu’s choice of Wale Edun was blocked by the ex-president who favoured Kemi Adeosun instead for the Ogun state slot.

Tinubu might have lost the reins in Osun, too. Olagunsoye Oyinlola, an ex-governor and protégé of Obasanjo, has been appointed.
Ex-president now seems to be having the upper hand over Tinubu. And that is already causing a lot of rage in the APC.

The plan for the party split into smaller pieces has reported been further worsen because of how Buhari is carrying on the current war against corruption. There might be no sacred cows.

Apart from being disappointed, many APC members, particularly, governors who are suspected to have dipped their hands into public coffers to fund either their polls or other aspirants, comprising the president himself, are now jittery. They fear coming under investigation for their inability to pay workers’ salaries.

Atiku Abubakar, former vice president is also said to have gone back to the drawing board to bringing up his Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), a political platform he inherited from the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.

The sources close to the Turaki Adamawa said that Atiku’s calculation is to line up with like minds among the breaking away faction of the PDP, the likes of the Senate president Bukola Saraki and Sokoto governor, Aminu Tambuwal.

However, the PDP has zoned its presidential candidate to the north for the 2019 general polls. This may be appealing to some APC chieftains interested in the presidential race.

But some assistants to Tinubu rejected any plot by their principal to float a new political party.

“It’s a lie from the pit of hell. There’s no way our leader can throw away his efforts to build the APC from formation to victory in the elections and abandon it for a new party. What else does he want to achieve,” they said.

He said the meeting had become necessary to review the operations of the military after 60 days into the new order.

Major General Olonisakin said the mandate would be delivered, in spite of the challenges of weather and logistics.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, also said that President Buhari was not in doubt with the capabilities of the Nigerian Army to end the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists in the north-east.

It was also revealed that the President would be meeting with the Service Chiefs in few days, in continuation of the review, as the deadline draws nearer.

President Buhari in August gave the Service Chiefs three months to terminate the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Politics / Ministerial Screening: Shittu, Khadija Ibrahim Screened By Senate by NaijNewsToday: 3:06pm On Oct 20, 2015

Mr Adebayo Shittu and Mrs Khadija Abba Ibrahimhave been screened by the Senate and asked to take a bow and leave.
Shittu took a bow and left after he had answered several questions from the senators, ranging from religion to politics, activism and governance.
Shittu addressed the perception that he was a religious extremist by stating that he has never been indicted by any panel of inquiry for religious intolerance as he is not a fanatic or a religious extremist.

He revealed that his secretary for many years is a Christian and wife of a Pastor with whom he has had a cordial working relationship.

Adebayo Shittu, who has served as a legislator, commissioner and Attorney-General in Oyo State, noted that his personality did not hamper his past political successes.

While affirming his commitment to seeing Nigerians live a moral life, he was of the view that religion should be made compulsory in educational institutions.

Answering questions on the possibility of being put in charge of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Shittu said that he would ensure that grassroots sports is developed to the maximum as this remained the best way to develop the sector.

Mrs Abba Ibrahim’s screening, however, took less time as she was asked to take a bow and leave after a dramatic exchange of banters among the senators, one of whom is the nominee’s husband, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim.
