Most admission seekers are often times left confused trying to get the reason they were not offered admission to the institution of their choice despite having a very high UTME score.

At times, having a high Post-UTME is not a guarantee for admission. The following are the reasons students may not be offered admission despite having a high post-UTME score.

1. Wrong UTME Subject Combination
This is one of the reasons a number of students lose admission despite beating the post-UTME cut-off point, this is very important to take note of.

Even at times, some students are being stripped of their admission or moved to another department during the process of first-year registration simply because of wrong JAMB subject combination.

For instance, a student seeking admission to study Mass Communication would definitely lose the admission if he or she did not take Literature-in-English as part of the four subjects for the UTME exam.

Similarly, a student seeking admission to study Physics and Electronics should definitely select Physics as part of his UTME subject combination. Before any student fills his or her JAMB form, he or she should painstakingly go through the JAMB Brochure to know the right subject combination for his or her course of study.



2. University’s Catchment Area
Most Federal Universities, including some State Universities, still retain the policy of Catchment area when selecting students for admission.

For instance, UNILAG catchment area constitutes majorly South Western states. What this means is that prospective students from the South West have higher chances of gaining admission than those from other part of the country.

For example, a prospective student from Osun state who scored 56, applying to study Sociology may be offered admission while another student from Imo state who scored 60 may not be offered admission.

This is so because if the catchment cut-off point for Osun is 56 while the general cut-off is 62, such a student from Imo state has definitely lost the admission despite having a higher score than his counterpart from the catchment zone.

In view of the above, admission seekers should always be aware of a university’s catchment area and requirements before selecting any university.



3. University Policy
Despite the general catchment area policy, some universities still have their individual policy they adopt as yardstick in admitting students.

Oftentimes, such policies are not made public. It is therefore the duty of admission seekers to find out specific admission policies of their prospective universities from friends schooling in such universities.



4. Low UTME Score
Often times, I pity most Jambites who score within the range of 180 and 210 because such scores limit their chances of gaining admission especially when there are enough students who scored as high as 250 and above. The chances of gaining Admission into such school will be very slim.

Well, most Universities still compute both UTTME and post-UTME scores in calculating the student’s average score. Hence, having a low UTME score can also hinder one’s opportunity of gaining admission.

It is always advisable for students to try to score 250 and above in order to be on a safer side. As a matter of fact, it is very necessary concerning the JAMB policy of redirecting students with lower UTME scores to less-competitive universities or giving them horrible courses to study.



5. O’level Result
I do advise admission seekers to pass ALL the necessary subjects in their O’level exam(s) very well before going ahead to take UTME exam.

I have met with lots of students who lost their admission because they did not have at least credit pass in some important subjects in their O’level result.

Recently, I met with a student who lost his admission to study Medicine at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (OOU) because he did not have at least a credit pass in Mathematics in his O’level result.

In fact, I felt very sorry for him because gaining admission to study a competitive course such as medicine is not easy.

Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde said Lionel Messi will be examined by doctors after sustaining a “significant bruise” to his nose in Wednesday’s Champions League victory over Manchester United.

Messi took a blow in the first half of Barca’s 1-0 opening-leg quarter-final success away to United at Old Trafford.

The Barca captain was left bruised and bloodied after United defender Chris Smalling attempted to win the ball ahead of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Asked about Messi after the game, Valverde told reporters: “Messi wasn’t so comfortable after the blow.

“We have to examine him tomorrow to see how he is. He was strong, but he has quite a significant bruise.”

Barca were far from their best but still managed to grab an away goal, United defender Luke Shaw deflecting a Luis Suarez header into his own net.

The 12th-minute opener gave Barca their first Champions League victory away to United following two draws and two defeats previously.

“When you see the atmosphere here and the team they have and it being the Champions League, it’s hard to win here,” Valverde said.

“It was a difficult game and complicated at times, but we had the clearest chances.”

With Shaw unfortunately awarded the goal, Suarez’s Champions League drought away from home continued.

Not since 2015 against Roma has Suarez struck on the road in the competition but Valverde defended the Uruguay forward.

“The value of what he does doesn’t depend on whether or not he scores, but what he generates,” he added.

Kelechi Iheanacho has emerged as the club’s fifth worst performer of the 2018/19 season. According to top football website, whoscored.com, the 22-year-old is rated 21st out of 25 players currently starring for the former Premier League champions.

Iheanacho has a very low rating of 6.23, having so far had an abysmal campaign for the Foxes which has seen him score just once in 27 EPL matches this term.

The former Nigeria youth international has scored only four goals in 48 EPL appearances since joining Leicester while losing his place in the Super Eagles’ squad.

In contrast, Iheanacho’s compatriot, Wilfred Ndidi has been having a rollercoaster season for the Foxes which has seen him emerge as the best Premier League tackler with six more games remaining.

WhoScored which rated Ndidi 7.24 had this to say about the midfielder: “A consistent performer, Wilfred Ndidi has been a critical component in the heart of City’s midfield again this season.

“Ndidi also has the most interceptions with 68 in total and the most aerial battles won with 124.”

Cristiano Ronaldo secured an away goal for Juventus as they drew the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Ajax.

Ronaldo, who has won the competition five times, netted his 125th Champions League goal just before half-time with a diving header following Joao Cancelo’s cross.

Manchester United must produce another unlikely Champions League comeback to keep their hopes alive after Barcelona left Old Trafford with a slender advantage following the quarter-final first leg.

Manchester United players could see their salaries cut by as much as 25 per cent if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, the UK Sun reports.

Contracts at Old Trafford are structured such that up to a quarter of wages are taken away, if they do not earn a place in Europe’s elite club competition.

Reductions in wages are intended to protect the Old Trafford outfit from the drop in revenue that comes with missing out on Champions League football.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League and face a tough task on Wednesday night when they take on Barcelona in the Champions League.

It is understood that this could encourage Real Madrid to make a move for Paul Pogba.

The 26-year-old has two years left on his United contract, which currently nets him £300,000 a week.

Former West Brom and Stoke striker Peter Odemwingie announced his retirement from football at UEFA’s Equal Game conference at Wembley on Wednesday.

The 37-year-old was capped for Nigeria more than 60 times, scoring at the 2014 World Cup, and scored 36 goals in 129 Premier League appearances between 2010 and 2016.

Believing he was moving to QPR from West Brom, the striker drove to Loftus Road, only to be refused entry to the stadium after both clubs said that no fee had been agreed.

On his retirement, Odemwingie said: “It’s an emotional day, so many memories go through your head.

“I didn’t know how to do it or where to do it, but I think this is the right place to do it.

“Wembley is a place with a lot of history in football.”

Odemwingie, whose last professional appearances came for Indonesian side Madura United in 2017, said he intends to embark on a coaching career.

“The next chapter is slowly building up to a coaching career and hopefully I will be coaching in the Premier League one day,” he said.

The resident Pastor of the Amagba branch of the Living Faith Church a.k.a Winners Chapel, Pastor Kingsley Emeka Mokwunye, has been accused by a 17-year old girl of introducing her to alcohol and repeatedly raping her in her father’s house.

The victim whose identity has been hidden for security reason, narrated her ordeal in the hands of the pastor.

“He used to call me to advise me to stay away from boys, to live a good life and always respect my parents. I took it like he was my own father that I could trust and tell him anything I want to say.


“That was how he started calling me, talking to me till it got to a time he told me that he likes me. I took it as a normal thing. He started taking advantage of me. He tells me I do not know what he is doing for me. He started showing me things I have not seen before and took me to places I have never been to. That was how it started. He was the first person to show me how condom looked like. He taught me how to take alcohol. He told me not to tell my parents. He said they will understand what he is doing. He slept with me many times including our house when my parents are not at home.

“Thinking about the thing has affected me educationally. I could not read. The whole thing was disturbing me. When I told his wife, she said I was lying and told me to come to their house and repeat it before her husband. I want Pastor Kingsley to go to jail. I was always shocked anytime I am in church and see him preaching. I was afraid of telling my mother what was happening”.

Her father, Mr Paul Obidah, who serves as a board chairman of the church branch, speaking on the issue said;

“I have been in the church for the past 27 years. I started the church in Kaduna State. Abioye led me to Christ. I have been in Kaduna all these years. It got to a time. I decided to relocate home. We have been in Bénin serving God with our heart. Many pastors have come to the branch and go. I see the pastors as Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith. There was a day Pastor Kingsley came to my house, I could smell alcohol from his breath.

“One day, his wife came and said she wants to see our daughter. I left her to discuss. I heard my daughter telling her she has something to tell her. The next day, the woman came and told me she has seized her husband’s phone because of the calls her husband was making to my daughter. I just said maybe it was a family friend matter. She said he went to pick my daughter at school, I said maybe he bought her ice cream.

“I was sleeping when something struck me to ask my daughter what is happening. I called and asked her to open up to me. She began telling me how the Pastor used to make love to her in my own house. The different hotels he took her to. She said it was a burden to her. She said she does not know what the pastor gave to her. This is a Pastor we trusted. We talked and do everything as a family. I didn’t know he has been doing this nonsense in my house. This is a girl that does not go out. She has been in” he said

Chelsea manager, Maurizio Sarri, has insisted he would never resign, despite enduring open hostility from many fans throughout their controversial 2-1 comeback win over Cardiff City on Sunday.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek nodded in Chelsea’s winner in the first minute of injury time, after Cesar Azpilicueta had cancelled out Victor Camarasa’s second-half strike.

The travelling Blues supporters chanted “F— Sarriball”, “We want Sarri out” and “You don’t know what you’re doing” afterwards.

After the match, Sarri told reporters: “I can understand it very well. I have been on the pitch for the last 45 years, so I know the reaction of the fans. I was really disappointed for my players, because they were fighting. Probably it was better to wait until the end of the match.

“But, for me, it’s not a big problem. Of course I can understand. Unfortunately, in the last period, I am getting used to this. Unfortunately. I have to work just in order to change their opinion.

“I think that we only need to win matches. If you win matches, the fans will be happy. Of course, we need to improve and play better. But sometimes, during the season, you need to win matches like this. We lost in Everton after our best first half of the season, playing very good football, but ended up losing the match.

“[Here] we started very badly but, in the end, we won. Probably with a bit of luck, but, for sure, there was a bit of unluckiness at Everton.”

Asked if supporter opposition could ever make him consider resigning, Sarri replied:

“No, no, I want to stay here. When I arrived here, this team, on the table, was 30 points behind Manchester City. They were fifth. So I want to stay here, I want to improve the results.

“But, of course, [I knew] it wasn’t a very easy [job]. Probably, at the moment, there is a difference between Manchester City, Liverpool and us. We can fight with the others, I think. We are trying to do it, but we have to work very well and, for a long time, if we want to arrive in the top two.”
