Mr fake economist.... this move will bring about more harm than good, just watch. They have only killed small businesses but large importers will still bring their goods into the country and inflation will thrive.

You don't suddenly wake up and put these restrictions when you haven't put other things in place for the affected people to fall back on.

When fundermental infrastructure is provided, industries will naturally spring up and gradually people will be weaned off patronising imported goods. Or if the government likes, they can then impose restrictions only after the system is sustainable.

Take Dangote industries as an example. It didnt appear overnight, it grew and now it is one of the largest in Africa. Were there no imported goods when Dangote was starting out? Did that affect his industry developing into what it is today?

Put the right things in place and diversification will happen.
I don't usually respond to people who insult, but for the sensible point you made.
Every Country import, but only raw material not finished goods
Dangote and Innoson are popular examples; Dangote is involved in re-packing while
Innoson deals with assembling. Both are importing raw materials.

Make research on "Balance of trade"

Do u imagine innoson and other manufacturers do not import too? or are their products assembled all parts 100% fabricated here in Nigeria? My uncle is a manufacturer and nearly lost his business because he sent for components to be crafted in Germany due to the specialist specifications, if the items didn't arrive on time it would be a different story today.

Every country on earth imports!! Yes we do a lot more than we should but this is not the way to solve the situation. What about drugs for cancer etc and hospital perishables that are all imported? Wicked suddenly develop cancer research centers with 50 years of experience and corporate practice and stop importing drugshuh

This President is hell bent on destroying his own goodwill again....
My Oga,
I agree with you that all country rely on importation but the difference is what they import.
A country should import Raw Material not Finished Goods
It is much cheaper to import raw material (Compare much much we sell our crude oil and
the amount we pay for the end product; Petrol, Diesel, Gas, etc
)
That is the reason Dangote & Innoson are surviving in the business.

The policy to increase import duties is a strategic one

Your theory is play but how realistic is it.

If a country wants to decrease importation of processed goods so as to improve local production, then it should support production of such goods in the country:
1. By providing electricity 24/7.
2. By providing grants for innovation.
3. By enabling opportunities for certified international manufacturers to operate their facilities in the country.
None has been done by the present regime.

Does Nigeria produce:
Car components in Nigeria?
LCD TV?
LCD TV screens?
NO!

Most of these importers import goods that we don't have the facility to produce. This is just a deliberate attempt by the government to milk the citizens and frustrate the business of importers.

On a personal note, I am working on introducing an electronic product in Nigeria, I have designed and constructed it, but most components were imported. Consequently, my product will suffer from this duty hike and patronage from potential customers will be low because I would like to cover my cost of production and make profit as well.

Basic economics theory will surely fail.
If a ban is placed on importation,
Foreign investors will be forced to invest in Nigeria.
They will begin to manufacture their initially imported product in Nigeria.
Just as Nokia, Samsung and Nissan are currently doing.

Which politicians convoy have you seen them drive the made in Nigeria innoson cars?
Of a truth, they don't
But since they are not the market to patronize Innoson, It's no problem.
All the politicians in Nigeria can buy the numbers of vehicles one transporter
will buy.
Example:- Peace Mass Transit alone operates over 2000 buses

Good point but you didn't finish it well.
Have you thought of RAW MATERIALS for local production?
Almost all aspects of production in Nigeria has an imported raw material in it.
Nigeria does not have all the raw materials for production so this post above will only keep increasing the cost of finished goods locally.
I respect your display of maturity in quoting me, unlike those who are born to curse and abuse.

There are Raw Materials in Nigeria, but Untapped
Google "location of raw material in Nigeria" and you will be shocked.
The only issue is that we are scared of investing in them
