The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Akwa Ibom remains high despite the aggressive enlightenment campaign by the state government and several donor agencies. According to a report by the TrackNews Media , the situation is now a serious concern to state government officials. In successive years, Akwa Ibom maintained the number one position as a state with the highest burden of HIV in Nigeria, with 5.5%, according to the Nigeria HIV/AIDs Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS). According to Akwa Ibom programme data for 2022, about 240,000 persons are currently on treatment for HIV/AIDS in the state. From the number, HIV gender disparity between females and males is high due to biological and social reasons showing that females are the worst hit. “HIV prevalence was greatest among younger adults, with females aged 20-24 years (1.3%) having almost four times the prevalence of males in the same age group (0.4%). “As at June 2023, 10,833 adolescents and young persons were on medications hence the need for positive living to ensure they adhere to viral suppression and epidemic control,” the survey revealed. Dr Edith Mathias Igbemi, quoted in the report, called for more awareness of control measures. She highlighted local government areas with a high prevalence of HIV in Akwa Ibom to include Ikono, Obot Akara, Ikot Ekpene, Uyo, Uruan, Ibesikpo, Nsit Ubium, Eket, Ibeno and Oron. Igbemi noted that the state had made some progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS regarding improved case finding through Index Case Testing, Camping and Creek Testing modalities. She revealed that with the breakthrough recorded, the 2021 publication of the Akwa Ibom state ministry of health estimated that the prevalence rate had dropped to 4.4 per cent. She, however, called for more collaboration with stakeholders and development partners in escalating HIV prevention activities for adolescents and young girls in the state. |

NAF Air Strikes: Villagers, Gunmen Flee Anambra Communities …As 35 Gunmen Allegedly Neutralized Scores Injured. Less than twenty-four hours after the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) launched air strikes at the Osumoghu Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State and that of Aku Ihube in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo state, villagers and the terror gang known as unknown gunmen have fled the town. Similarly, neighbouring communities such as Lilu, Osu- Ihiteukwa and parts of Nnempi in Anambra State are said to be on the run for fear of fresh air strikes in their towns. It was gathered that the number of gunmen neutralized by the last Wednesday air strikes staggers between thirty and thirty-five while a cache of arms dumped in five camps by the gunmen was destroyed during the operation. When contacted the President General of Osumoghu Community Hon Uzochukwu Okeke said that he cannot talk at the moment as according to him he is in his workplace but he actually confirmed this development. But a native of Osumoghu Community who would not want her name on print said that the gunmen never saw it coming adding that the community is now like a ghost town. “Please don’t put my name because I don’t know who would read this and come after me or my family members but what happened yesterday was like a film ” “We heard the loud noise of an aircraft and we thought that it was a plane that wanted to crash land and it passed over us and headed towards the forest and suddenly we started hearing loud sound of bombing like in a warfare ” “They didn’t go to where our people stay like the market square or resident area and those we thought that could not die were running for safety many of them cannot be found now and we cannot enter the bush because there was fire everywhere” “Since then people are packing their things that is the much that they can lay their hands on because we heard that they are going to come again” She further said that even neighbouring towns like Osu-Ihiteukwa and Lilu and parts of Nnempi are running away because of the rumours that there is going to be another strike by the Army. Commissioner for Homeland Matters Chief Chikodi Anarah said that he has not much to say but that it is a product of the gunmen not heeding the plea by Gov Charles Soludo that they should come out and lay down their arms. Anarah noted that the security of lives and property is the first point of departure of any government and that the government owes it as its responsibility to protect the people who surrendered their freedom. https://newtelegraphng.com/naf-air-strikes-villagers-gunmen-flee-anambra-communities/ |

IMO ECONOMIC EXPANSION The era of Imo as the economic hub, east of the Niger is here as the State is set to experience further economic boast with the proposed Orashi Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone in Imo State. A free trade zone entails less restrictions, less taxation and as such, no limitation to business activities that will rise to economic limelight, improved revenue and greater development across the region and the State. This comes with great job opportunities for the Imo population and will surely open up new economic ventures. This is the brewing expectations as the Shared Prosperity administration of His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, seeks to create an Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone across Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema and Ngor Okpala Local Government Areas. The Orashi Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone, which will be flagged off with the dredging of the Oguta Lake and Orashi Waterways today by Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will give rise to multiple industrial ventures with multiplying effects on subsectors. Beyond the geographical benefits of dredging the waterways, there is a bigger economic turnaround and venture for the State, the region and the nation at large. Multinationals and a large number of incorporations established around the region and the State for diverse economic and commercial activities. Oh yeah! One may wonder how the Government intends to handle the resulting effects of gas flaring. But with gas gathering, collation and processing centers, these are eliminated to guarantee a clean and healthy environment. It is expected to have sufficient depth to berth small to medium size vessels, and provide an evacuation corridor for gas and other products processed and /or produced with the Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone for sale to neighboring states as well as export purposes. I am full of enthusiasm for businesses that will spring up, in the region and the State, with the establishment of the Orashi Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone and I encourage my Imo people, as business-minded as we are, to key into this great opportunity and harvest bountifully. Shell Companies in Nigeria paid the Nigerian government a total of $4.5 billion as production entitlements, taxes, royalties and fees last year, the company said in a new report which details payments in 25 countries where Shell has Upstream operations.. Production entitlements which are the host government’s share of production in the reporting period derived from projects operated by Shell was the highest share of payment amounting to over $3billion. This includes the government’s share as a sovereign entity or through its participation as an equity or interest holder in projects within its sovereign jurisdiction (home country). Production entitlements arising from activities or interests outside of its home country are excluded, the report said. It further said that in certain contractual arrangements, typically a production sharing contract, a government through its participation interest may contribute funding of capital and operating expenditure to projects, from which it derives production entitlement to cover such funding (cost recovery). Such cost recovery production entitlement is included. The total amount paid in taxes by Shell on its income, profits or production (which include resource severance tax, and petroleum resource rent tax), including those settled by a government on behalf of Shell under a tax-paid concession in Nigeria amounted to over $700million. The total royalties paid in 2022 by Shell to the Nigerian government was over $691million. The report said these are payments for the rights to extract oil and gas resources, typically at a set percentage of revenue less any deductions that may be taken. Since 2016 Shell has made mandatory disclosures under the UK’s Reports on Payments to Governments Regulations 2014 (amended December 2015). “We have published the revenues that our operations generate through taxes and royalties on a voluntary basis since 2012. We believe that being open about our tax payments helps people to understand how much we pay and why,” the report said. In 2022, Shell paid $68.2 billion to governments. The company paid $13.4 billion in corporate income taxes and $8.2 billion in government royalties. In addition, it collected $46.6 billion in excise duties, sales taxes and similar levies on our fuel and other products on behalf of governments.
