Amyjustin: Pls NN, i want 2 grow my hair longer though it's already past my shoulder. I use jst beva relaxer, petals conditioner nd soulmate hair cream. Dnt knw d name of d shampoo. Cn u tell me what 2 use nd wat nt 2 use. Plus i'm braiding my hair tday, shld i apply anytn while my hair is braided.
Well if your hair is past your shoulder with the current product you're using, then there's really no need to fix what ain't broke.
Seems to be working for your hair...though very few people use those products and get away with it.
If I may suggest, you can substitute the soulmate cream for sheabutter and apply on your hair to protect your strands while the braiding is going on.

PetDancer: Pls i want to know do u retouch ur hair when there is undergrowth in it?
My hair isn't relaxed. The straighter texture was as a result of blowdrying with a round boar bristle brush..I.e. heat straightening as against chemical straightening.

For relaxed hair, the best time to retouch your hair is when you have at least 3 inches of undergrowth. It doesn't matter if it takes 3 or 6 mths as long as you have at least 3 inches.
...and when you retouch, relax the undergrowth only to avoid overlapping your relaxer which can damage your hair, weaken it and cause it to lose color.

Anyanwu68: Please am A̷̷̴̐͠ guy and I carry hair(as in I don't cut my hair) but I don't like the look of my hair, please what are the affordable Nigerian products that can help me darken my hair nd make it pleasant to the eyes please I really need help from my fellow nairalanders(I don't want to dye the hair)
Well, rosemary essential oil and amla oil are known to maintain dark hair. If you have a problem with the color, a natural way is to use a mix of henna leaves and indigo dye. Ask the people (usually Northerners) that sell henna or 'lalle' leaves in the market near you.

JOYCEOUS: I am very sure the products you use are expensive, what about the local or home-made products?
They are not so expensive and I use them because a little goes a long way.
I also didn't have a good experience with some Nigerian products available...such as Petals products , Vinoz , Damatol, SoulMate, Apple.....I really tired to make them work!
I did have very good results using Dudu Osun Soap to wash my hair and Emily Millionaire Coconut and Herbs as a deep conditioner and I fall back on them from time to time when I run out of my staples.
I love that the Nigerian market is a great source of unrefined oils and butters and I purchase them often.

naijatoday: Please, what can someone with dandruff use?

Where can I get AVC here in Lagos.

Thanks.
For dandruff, Head and Shoulders work well but be sure to use it on the scalp only and condition your hair well after shampoo because that shampoo in my opinion is really drying!
There are other natural alternatives such as applying a mix of olive oil and tea tree oil /eucalyptus oil. They are effective but may take a longer while especially if your dandruff is severe.

I'm not familiar with Lagos market but you can order online from naturalnigerian.com or kinkyapothecary.

Duchaello: Please, could you please tell me how to use the henna leave and is the henna leave the same with the laali leave used as herbs for the yorubas? await your reply.
Yes, that's the very type I use.

I usually sift a milk tin cup of the leaves (to remove twigs). Then I mix it with a little water then add lemon juice from one lemon (acidic to draw out the dye).
Some people use Apple Cider Vinegar or tea infusions.
The henna paste has the consistency of thick oats.

When the color changes to reddish brown, I dilute the mix with conditioner till it's a consistency I can work with (like baby food).

I noticed a lot of people asking me about the price of the products I listed and how available it is in the Nigerian market so I've written them down.

Keracare Cleansing Cream. N3100 (available online or on request)

ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo N1200 (readily available in the market)

Creme of Nature Sulfate Free shampoo N1600 (available online and I saw it once in CasaBella stores Ikeja shopping mall)

VO5 shampoo N1400 (readily available in the market)

Organics Root Stimulator Replenishing Conditioner N1200 (readily available in the market)

VO5 conditioner N1400 (readily available in the market)

Cantu Shea Leave In Conditioning Cream N2500 (sizzellestores.com)

Coconut oil (readily available in the market. I find it where you can buy Shea butter) N1000 for 750ml...you can substitute with Palm Kernel Oil.

Castor oil N400 (cold pressed available in any pharmacy) or Jamaican Black Castor Oil N2500 (naturalnigerian.com)

NappyGirl Pudding N1500 for 125 ml, N2800 for 250ml (available on request)

Emily Millionaire Coconut and Herbs N300 (readily available in the market).

All products can be purchased on request should you have any difficulty locating them.

Hope this has been helpful.

I've tried some Nigerian ready made products and because of some ingredients in the products I don't use them.
So far, most just make my hair feel really hard. Instead I go for the unrefined natural products available in Nigeria.

You may try out the following Nigerian products.

Dudu Osun Black Soap....good alternative to sulfate free shampoo

Emily Millionaire Coconut and Herbs....good alternative to Cantu Shea Leave in Conditioning Repair Creme

NaturalNigerian Leave In Conditioner

AfricanNaturalistas products (available on their website and on Jumia)

Nature's Gentle Touch Products

I'll really love to use all made in Nigeria haircare products once they become African hair friendly...so far, they really love using Petrolatum in their products...which is really old school...but the products I listed above contain hair friendly ingredients.

Hope this helped.

Getting them online is the easiest and fastest method to get these products if you don't know the exact shops to look for them

Oh and I still can't access mails sent via nairaland so please can you send them directly to nappilynigeriangirl@gmail.com....thanks.

mencer: Wondering why we love other people and races everything lifestyle hairstyles language at the expense of what God has given us ?
Lol. Perhaps we just like something different. There are things we have too that other people will give an arm for just because it's 'exotic'.
The only problem is when we think what we have naturally is inferior as against being 'unique'.

Egba girl: My hair is natural.

Thank you. I'll get in touch with her. Btw, Can I get regular cornrows with extensions for my wig. Like the type I can wear by itself without the wig.
Yes you can but don't let the stylist braid too tight. My hair is fine stranded. To avoid breakage and hairline loss, I tell the stylist to braid a little way with my own hair before putting the extensions in.
FashionRe: How To Grow Nigerian Hair Long: My Hair Journey by NappilyNigerian(op): 8:12pm On Nov 13, 2013
ruthobaz: I've been using ebony relaxers,911 conditioner, can't remember the shampoo product.
911 conditioner makes a good hair spritz and is light for everyday use. Pour some into a spray bottle (an empty body mist bottle will do) then add a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil and mix.
Use this to moisturise your hair daily and before combing.

Since you're going natural, you won't need the relaxer again.

You'll need to get to get a good shampoo preferably sulfate free. I've listed some at the beginning of the thread.

Then you need a good conditioner.

A combination of these should keep your hair hydrated so it'll stay soft during your transition.
@nappilynigerian I must commend u 4 d great work I really love this.I had long hair just like yours, mine was very full and stubborn even if it was retouched it still looked like a natural hair I hated it then but I didn't av d mind to cut it with scissors but ppl loved my hair except me and d hairdressers, so I started retouching every month to make it less full and refused to use attachments to weave my hair whenever I want to fix weavons,my hair started cutting and became less full and i just loved it d way it was not until Iast 2yrs I did bonding directly to my hair, they used a fake glue and it was time 4 me to lose my hair and most of my hair was pulling away from my scalp, right now I regret ow I treated my hair 'I didn't know what I had until I lost it'.My hair is still long but not as b4 and its looking unhealthy, I av not retouched for 4 months cos its 2 soft and not full and healthy I wish 2 go natural pls what should I do?
As long as you don't stress your hair any further and your roots aren't damaged, your hair will definitely recover.

To go natural, you simply have to stop relaxing your hair.
You need to avoid harsh drying products because they tend to make afro textured hair strong and difficult to manage.

All you need are products that will draw moisture to your hair to keep it soft, supple and growing stronger. I have listed products I use earlier in the thread.
You can also check my blog for recommended products which are good for afrotextured hair (good for relaxed hair too).

Egba girl: Can anyone recommend protective styles? I've had braids in for the past 5 months. Like literally back to back and I realize that this is probably not good for my hair 'cause it needs to breathe and "recover" but due to my work environment and time, I don't have a week to let it chill. I was thinking of taking my braids out and getting a wig but I also hear that wigs aren't too good. Then I thought of getting a weave but I'm also scared for my front. It's beginning to break from all the braiding and pulling. Any ideas/recommendations?

Oh and if you are recommended a weave/wig, pls give deets about the kind of weave too cause I honestly don't know the first or last thing about weaves/wigs.

Help a sister out! SOS!!! Gracais!!

Just in case you missed my cry for help!
Hi there, pls send a mail to toyin@twentysix85.com . She'll be able to get you a good quality wig. Let her know what style of wig you like. Personally I prefer a human hair wig because you can change up the look, dye it or curl it. Don't forget to wear a wig cap before putting on the wig. You'll avoid breakage doing that.

Is your hair relaxed or natural?

Christine01: Please how do I go about wearing dreadlocks?

I had to cut my shoulder-length hair about 2 months ago because it had become weak from relaxers and heat. I now carry my hair very short (like a boy). I'm loving the look ( makes me standout). I really want to try dreadlocks (Tired of weaveons). How do I go about it?

Any dreadlock carrying sister in the house? Pls help!
There's a beauty salon in Poise in Ikeja shopping mall that does locs including interlocking locs...that's if you reside in Lagos.
Unfortunately, I've lost the contact of the owner.

Another place to check out is O'naturals Salon in Ogudu area.

If your hair can be pulled up in a bun, you can use Marley hair or afro kinky hair to make it bigger.

dynamicbuzz: @op I have another question....I just braided my hair without attachment,is it advisable to shower my hair everyday also while taking my bathe, since they said water equals moisture
No, washing your hair daily will make it get fuzzy (old) faster instead try using a water based moisturiser.

funkybaby: @nappily nigerian

please, do you have any hair home recipes that can be made with raw eggs?

any tips of shrinkage and how to handle it?
1 egg + juice of half lemon + 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Mix and leave on for 30 mins then rinse.

shrinkage is a natural part of having super coily hair so it's best to work with it. Styles such as kinky twists (without extensions) is really beautiful with shrunken hair.

To reduce shrinkage, try twistouts or braidouts. You can also stretch your hair with thread or medium heat.

another way to stretch your hair is coconut milk and lime treatment...recipe on my blog....you can try but it may not work for your texture.

NATURAL HAIR STYLING TIPS

BEFORE THE BIG DAY
Styling your natural hair for your wedding day doesn't mean you don't need to pamper your hair as you'll pamper your skin...

Before your big day, make sure your hair is ubermoisturised. When your hair is properly moisturised, it will hold styles well, be more defined and won't frizz up easily. No one wants frizzy hair on their wedding day....

Cleanse your hair and scalp with a moisturising creamy cleanser. Another moisturising option for cleansing your hair is using a cleansing mask such as Bentonite or Rhasshoul clay...

Follow up the cleansing with a deep conditioning mix to hydrate your hair. This is a time to treat whatever hair issues you have with your hair. Incorporate the necessary oils, herbs and natural products into the deep conditioning mix.
It's your wedding, make sure you use the best. Don't skimp on quality.

Follow up the deep conditioning with a hair and scalp massage using stimulating and moisturising oils to trap in moisture within the cortex of the hair.
If properly done, your hair should be soft, silky with well hydrated coils.

FashionRe: How To Grow Nigerian Hair Long: My Hair Journey by NappilyNigerian(op): 12:44pm On Nov 08, 2013
dynamicbuzz: @op my undergrowth which is about 2 months is extremely coily and I don't like combing my hair often,I just wanna find out if there would be any side effects if I don't comb the roots regularly.....hope it won't turn into locs or get matted?
Since your hair is extremely coily, it may be prone to matting. I guess the reason you don't comb often is because it tangles up and hurts when you do so. Unless your hair is in a protective style or your hair is stretched to reduce tangling, you really need to detangle (with wide tooth comb or fingers) once a week...

To make combing easier, you need to use a detangler prior to combing. Try Braid Release Detangler, Mane and Tail Detangler and Kinky Coily Knot Today. Divide your hair into smaller sections for combing.
To keep your hair stretched so you'll comb less often without fear of matting...you can stretch your roots with threading, braids, twists or gentle heat stretching with blow dryer. You can keep it stretched by bunning, braiding or weaving (cornrows)
