HOW TO AVOID TANGLES IN YOUR HAIR

Having hair that tangles easily makes washing and styling of the hair a nightmare. It also robs the hair of length as trying to detangle breaks off the hair making it look like your hair isn't growing. Infact this is one of the main reasons most women opt for chemical relaxers as they have no idea how to get rid of tangles on natural hair.
With proper methods I will list below, tangling and knotting can be reduced to the barest minimum and take down and washing of your hair will be a breeze.
First of all, you need to eliminate the possible causes of tangling.

- Is the hair dry and brittle?
Dryness causes curly/coily hair to knot up on itself much like a leaf curling up when it's dry. This can lead to tangles. When the hair is in protective styles made with extensions, it is difficult to properly moisturise the hair as it is encased in the extensions.
There is an erroneous belief that application of oil based products like hair grease, waxes, oil sheen spray is sufficient to keep the hair moisturised. This is not true as the only moisturiser is WATER. The oil/grease simply coat the hair and attract dust and lint which intertwines with your hair causing it to tangle on take down.
To prevent tangles due to dryness and brittleness, it's important to use a water based moisturiser mixed with natural oils that is absorbed by the scalp and hair. There are commercial braid sprays such as Just For Me Braid Release available that you can use to keep your hair moisturised in the protective style and during take down.
You can make yours with this simple recipe:
Mix 1tbs aloe vera juice + 1 tsp olive oil (or any light natural oil) + 100ml distilled water in a spray bottle and apply to hair daily.

- What hair products do you use?
Like I said above, using water based products to moisturise and hydrate your hair prevents dryness and knots.
Petroleum based oils and waxes clog your pores, attracts dusts and lint increasing the likelihood of tangles. They also coat the hair strands and keep water out of the hair strands. This is good if your hair has been properly hydrated prior to application but bad if it hasn't.
Avoid products containing alcohol unless it's fatty alcohol as it dries out your hair.
Do you cleanse your scalp and hair while in protective style? Opt for a sulfate free shampoo instead such as..... http://www.nappilynigeriangirl.com/2013/01/nappy-q-how-to-prevent-tangles-in.html

End time for Nigeria.

Oil money should have been used with precision to build or upgrade existing power stations.

But that wasn't the case. Politicians were too myopic and corrupt to know the disastrous consequences. Where there is no electricity, how can we progress.

99% of businesses rely on power in one way or the other.

Hajeeyah:
Hello NN, Thanks for the educative and informative thread. I just came across this thread and decided to do something to my hair. I have a soft and very dry hair so it breaks and sheds easily. These are the products are use now so please kindly tell which to change and which products to add:

1. Profective mega growth stimulating shampoo.
2. Profective mega growth detangling conditioner.
3. Profective mega growth hair and scalp revitalizer.
4. Shea butter.
5. coconut oil.
Please kindly help me out as I'm confused and would like to grow my hair as long as possible.

P.S. my hair is natural
Your current products aren't too bad...the problem is the presence of sulphate in the shampoo and petrolatum in the conditioners. However some people have no problem with these ingredients. Once you run out of it though, switch to Organics Root Stimulator brand. It is more natural hair friendly and just as affordable.

Please help!!! I always have lots of tangled hair anytym i wash, especially if I just take braids down. I follow ur blog so i knw wat its like to avoid tangles bt it dosent seem to work 4 me. The last wash was a disaster despite using a detangling spray.

It's normal to have lots of tangling when taking braids down especially if you have it longer than 2 weeks and have been moisturizing by spraying with water. The tangling is usually worse at the nape and edges.
To control this,
Try moisturizing with a leave in instead of direct water.
Protect the hair around the edges from direct water during showering by using a showercap or wrapping with a scarf.
Don't carry braids longer than four weeks. The major cause of that tangling is the usual hair you shed daily (approx 100 strands), multiply that by the number of days you have the style and it will give you an idea how bad the tangling will be.
Bigger braids give less tangles than smaller braids.

On take down,
Apply a slippery conditioner or oil beforehand and cover with a shower cap for some minutes.
When taking down and there's any tangles, patiently detangle starting from the ends. Apply more conditioner to give more slip.

Hair growth progress using the right regimen.
There are one thousand and one regimens for growing hair long especially now as there is more awareness about African hair growth.

There are different pills, potions and lotions available for hair growth.

Fact: Hair loss and damage happens over time due to different factors. It also takes time for such damage to be reversed.
Today's hair care practices such as tight braids, too much manipulation, improper products, improper relaxing technique all contribute to hair loss.

What I've been using for over 3 years that has given me fabulous results is NappyGirl Growth Enhancing Oil. There's no promise of instant growth but with consistent use, my breakage has stopped, my hair has grown thicker, fuller and longer.

I'm sharing my personal tips that worked for me as a Nigerian based in Nigeria and for the ladies in the pictures attached.

Atk01:

I have a question. How do you apply the oil to your hair?

Hair loss: Apply daily to affected area morning and evening. Gently massage until fully absorbed. A little goes a long way, so less is more.

Hair breakage: Apply daily to hair strands, work in until fully absorbed. Moisturise as usual.

Indian Oiling Method: Apply daily till wash day. Shampoo, condition, oil and braid till hair is 90% dry. Moisturise as usual.

Also I want to know how to use it and am transitioning U really inspired me. Thank you very much

Thank you for your kind words. No, nzu is different from bentonite clay. Bentonite clay is volcanic clay and to my knowledge we don't have active volcanoes in Nigeria .
