salsera: @99cent
Please dont let TV/film deceive you every race has women with thick hair, thin hair, hair that doesnt grow beyond their chin.
I see this every day.
What is common across board is that we all all have different curl patterns and just because some curl patterns are coily doesnt equal the fact that long length is not in our genes

@nappilynigerian
nice thread by the way, i'm gonna try the castor oil and acv again
By the way have you lived in different climates and if so how has your regime changed because of this?
Thank you! Unfortunately, when I travel, I have weaves or braids installed but now, I've decided to observe how my hair behaves in different climates.
I just came back from a conference in Ghana and I had my fro out all through. My hair got dry on the first day ( maybe cos of d A/C) but it behaved well after that.
...because of d busy schedule, I made a moisturiser to cut back on the time I'll spend moisturising my hair.

3 tbs of Cantu Shea Leave In Conditioning repair cream + 2 tsp each of coconut and palm kernel oil + 100ml of bottled water.

I applied this to the ends of my hair before bed.

Thankfully, the weather is as humid though the sun is hotter which dried out my hair more so I couldn't skip nightly moisturising like I could here.....#lazygal

romania: @nappilynigerian and @kaffy, how often do you wash your hair?
I shampoo my hair once a month and if my hair is out (not in weaves or braids), I'll cowash once a week or once every two weeks depending on how dirty my hair is and if I used any styling products within that period.

rofemiguwa: I also want to grow my hair,I love urs.I normally retouch every 3months.don't know if that is too soon. Then I shampoo with dudu osun black soap.since I can't get sulphate free shampoo(I don search tire).I deepcondition with jus ORS replenishing conditoner den I rub coconut oil and sheabutter before I fix weaves or braid.I hardly leave my natural hair for more than 2days.its short nape of neck level so packing it is a problem.this is my hair regimen.please can u help me with adjusting it so I can grow and retain lengths.also please wats ACV.thank you dear
Thanks dear...apologies for the delay...very tight month for me.

ACV is Apple Cider Vinegar. It's used to remove all the products in hair and scalp thereby restoring them to their default setting...haha....without dryness.
It's also used to control dandruff, detangle the hair and improve shine.

About your hair regimen, I don't see anything wrong with the current products you're using and since you retouch your hair every 3 months, it means your hair is definitely growing....

How long have you been growing your hair?
Do you relax your tips in addition to the undergrowth during retouching?

Problem areas I noticed in your regimen are:

During retouching, do you have sufficient growth to avoid overlapping of relaxers?

You said you only leave out your hair only two days in between weaves, I think your hair needs more than two days break to recuperate from the dryness it experiences under the weave.
How about investing in a nice wig to give your hair at least one week break. When you take off the week every day when you return from work, spritz the ends of the hair with a little water so it'll be damp not wet, then apply a 1:1 mix of coconut oil and shea butter concentrating on ends. Be sure not to use a lot so you'll not have buildup over the course of a week.
This method is to reduce possible breakage so you'll retain length better.

Also, do you have a silk cap or pillow to protect your hair? You can get this cheap in the market where they sell scarves. Look for 100% silk or silk/polyester blend.
Alternatively, you can purchase a satin bonnet.

Another thing, how to you comb your hair when you're taking off the weave?

Wow...heard a lot about the hair trigger but for some reason wasn't really interested. I'm always skeptical about hair growth potions and lotions....since hair grows....if you have to retouch every 3 months, then the hair is growing!

Your mix sounds interesting....I'm curious, what does it smell like?
FashionRe: How To Grow Nigerian Hair Long: My Hair Journey by NappilyNigerian(op): 3:35am On Oct 21, 2013
99cent: Nice thread. I love your hair.

I agree that black hair can grow long but I don't agree with the comparison to Asians, Brazilians and Caucasians. If these people followed your regimen, they will have hair almost down to their feet! Their hair just grows naturally fast even when they treat it poorly. it takes them less than 2 yrs to get their hair to ur length with very minimal care. just shampoo and condition. And their ponytail will look even thicker and shinier to boot.

Let's all just admit that most blacks or Africans have a hair texture that's difficult to maintain and grow long. It CAN grow long but the effort and time isn't worth it for most people. What tribe are you from? Even among west Africans, there is some diversity and variety in hair textures such that some people are able to grow their hair more effortlessly ex. fulani vs yoruba/igbo.

Overall, I think that with our hair texture, the best or most efficient state for us to wear our hair is medium/short. But due to the society that we live in that values western ways of beauty ie long, straight hair, we are all putting ourselves through a lot of pain and trouble to conform to these standards that will always elude us.
I agree that Caucasians and Asians may grow their hair to waistlength in a short time and this has to do with the nature of their individual hair strands and it's this difference that makes it easier to 'retain length'.

'Length retention' shouldn't be confused with 'hair growth'. Irrespective of race, we grow on average half inch to one inch of hair per month....half inch is for the slowest growth.

Why someone's hair will grow longer than others is 'length retention' by less breakage. This is where the difference comes in.
African hair is more 'tape like' in structure whether 'relaxed or natural' while the hair of other races is more 'rod like'......so which is easier to break? The rod or the tape?

This is why they are able to grow longer hair in a shorter space of time because they have less breakage.

With this understanding, to grow African hair long, you'll have to control hair care habits and methods that break the hair and incoporate strengthening products into your hair.
This is the way I've been able to grow my hair long.

Indians are known to have very long hair. Looking into the products they use, these strengthen the hair fibre from within.

African hair's particular challenge is moisture and strength, the absence of these makes African hair more prone to damage.

You can use the best products for haircare but if you have the wrong methods, you're just wasting money.
You can use the best methods but the wrong products can make your efforts seem useless.

Balance is the key. You don't really have to do a thousand and one things to grow your hair long.

.....A bit lengthy, I know ....but take time to read it and let me know what you think!

I'm Igbo by the way. Igbo mother and Igbo father.....and as far as I know, we have no mixed ancestry.

I think it'll be fun to do a 'Grow It' challenge using the 'Indian oiling method'. I've noticed less breakage with this method.
What do y'all say?

dontgivafuck: Did u braid in dt pic of your natural hair... It luks like a certain kind of hair attachment

Nice post by the way, keep them coming
Thank you. I'm not sure about the pic you mean but the first set of pics with braids is a blowout using a blowdryer. Then I made a single braid.

The second set of pics with free hair is a result of twistouts. I rarely leave my hair in a fro because it dries out faster and breaks off.

So, I just washed my hair and discovered I had little to no breakage. To reduce breakage I've been finger detangling exclusively.
ACV rinses at the end of shampooing also helps with the tangles.

stillwater: Lol, in the long run while I wait for my hair to grow longer, is there anything like a natural hair ponytail extension I can just attach to my hair? I'm tired of seeing a tiny puff puff bun when I pack my hair up. I would like a ponytail like this...
I don't really know about special natural hair ponytail extensions except for half wigs but you can improvise with kinky or Marley braid extensions. They are closest in texture to natural hair.

EducationRe: Was Your Name Ever Written Among The Noise Makers In Class? by NappilyNigerian(f): 10:57am On Oct 11, 2013
Nope, never had my name on the list.

Why?!

Because I was the Class Captain. The only job in which diplomatic immunity was highly sought after. I get to copy homeworks if I forgot mine, get my MANDATORY allocation from each classmate's break food and high respect just so their name stays of my sheet. Made sure to hide my dislike for Okin biscuits though before e spoil my career. LOL

O the good life. If someone should make a mistake of annoying me, I'll just wait till the time comes then pen the idiats name sharpally!. Leave our teacher to brighten up the persons bum with koboko. And my teacher then has never failed me. Turns hardened bullies to new born infants after 4 strokes.

A big shout out to Mr Okpoko were ever he is. cheesy

Sometimes I wish I had a tad more hips (not mama Africa size o) just to look more feminine in bodycon skirts.

Sometimes I wish my gap tooth will go away...

I wish my back acne scars would go away completely to a land I've never heard of! Simply fading away is not enough.

ajilete: CAN ANYONE GIVE ME THE BEST SKINCARE TIPS FOR OILY SKIN?They say oily skin wrinkles the slowest but in the meantime i am plagued with ever shiny face and visible pores. Makeup hardly ever lasts more than an hour or two before it starts slidding south. Is there anyone like me but has conquered the slug? HELP!!!
My dear, I feel ya. When I make up just before I hit the door, my makeup starts floating like akara!

One thing that has helped me is using a mattifying Primer.
Iman and Boots No 7 primers have been effective.

I control the oil by wiping my face with a 60:40 mix of water and apple cider vinegar. Helped with the open pores issue.

Then moisturisers matter too. I've gone high and low but currently sticking to St. Ives naturally smooth lotion with AHA.

mitchyy: Page bookmarked!!!

How long would you advise someone with a relaxed hair to wait before every re-touching?

I haven't used relaxer on my hair since July cus someone advised I always wait for six months interval before I apply relaxer on my hair.

I'm also contemplating the natural hair journey but nna mehn,,,, its not gonna be easy I guess
It's really not about the time between relaxers but how long your new growth is. The longer your new growth is, the less likely it is to overlap your relaxer. Overlapping relaxer is applying relaxers to already relaxed hair and that is the major reason for breakage and discoloration of relaxed hair.

Your new growth should be at least 2-3 inches long before retouching and only retouch new growth only.

Stretching relaxers for 6 mths allows enough growth to avoid overlapping of relaxers but if your hair grows 3 inches in less than 6 mths, its still safe to relax it.

funkybaby: @ happily nigerian

How long do you have sew-in weaves before taking it off?
Maximum of three weeks...if your hair doesn't get dry by that time, you can stretch it to a month but not more than that.

Before you fix, deep condition your hair. It will help it stay moisturised for longer so it won't be breaking by the time you take down the weave.

olympus: Wooooow!
Two questions!
One are u nigerian?
And has ur hair ever been damaged?
because it looks like u have naturally long hair! because irrespective of what some ladies do or add to there hair it will still break! Or won't ever grow to half of your hair!
So I think ur gene factor is @ work here
Yes, I'm full blooded Nigerian.

Yes, I've experienced breakage to the point I had to chop it off.
Once after consistent heat styling. Another time after using harsh products (student things!) and the next time after a series of weaves left in too long.

My hair strands are fine and break easily. They break if you look at them wrong!

I agree the type of hair you have is genetic (mine's the weakest of the bunch) but growing it long by retaining length is up to you.
