Chelsea is a big club. Chelsea does not concede possession to smaller teams. Chelsea losing to Spurs is completely unacceptable, even by my own patient standards. As s result, the backlash is wholeheartedly understandable, whether on Nairaland or on Twitter.


What I understand about Alonso is his ideas about building blocks. First build a defensively resilient team. This might involve conceding possession many times and not looking fancy. The idea is to build a team that is difficult to play and difficult to beat. He learnt this from Benitez and Mourinho.

Then he transitions the team to possession-based, dynamic, front-foot attacking football, on the back of aforementioned resiliency. This he learnt from Pep, Ancellotti, and being a Spaniard.


You could say this is not the place for this building blocks nonsense..... no time to check time..... Quite frankly, I have seen pundits, like Ibime, disagree with this methodology, calling it small-club practice. I don't necessarily disagree with this assertion either.

What I know though is that he is yet another young manager without a repertoire of ideas of reaching the same goal. Experience is what makes managers able to fine-tune as soon as a certain experiment is not achieving desired results. Unfortunately for him, he went and overachieved with his own methods. So it will be difficult to convince him not to try with what he knows.


The question is what to do. If you ask me, I say If we are honest, we have been in shambles for half a decade now. Going through manager after manager,..... method after method gets is nowhere. At some point, we need to settle on something. We have to..... or we fall into complete oblivion.
