Absolute nonsense. We just completely wasted time, we are looking like fools and have put ourselves in a very terrible situation.

When we should have offered 2m more per season for Ugarte over a 5 -year contract, we were forming prudent club. Now wanted to carry 50* the money splash on top Caicedo.

I implored us to leave the £80m business alone and scout talents. We could have signed Trindade, a better fit for DM, many weeks ago for peanuts. More importantly, he could have been training tactically and we would have saved ourselves from this embarrassment.

But once you got into the whole shopping-in-the-£100m-aisle nonsense, you either had to make the decision to stump up the cash, or freaking walk away. We did neither. Instead, we just wasted valuable time bidding in £5m increments.

Now we have the look of desperate fools to the rest. Hopefully Tridade and Lavia are still on the market for decent money.

I'm pretty sure the only reason we're in for both is the injury to Nkunku which may force à tweak in formation or tactics. Signing both, with the performances of Andrey and Emeka in preseason, would've caused a problem in a 4231.


Caicedo alone would've sufficed. But it is what it is.

I don't doubt that the injury to Nkunku changed approach in the market. But it was always a risk going into the season with Caicedo alone. As we can see with Nkunku, new position signing doesn't mean immune from injury.

We could have had Nkunku fit and Caicedo suffers an injury that keeps him out for four months. That would have meant relying on Santos for the rest of the season.

We always needed robust cover for that position but I cannot believe it is the position we are covering last.

This is first time I am saying anything at all about Andrey Santos.

I think Andrey Santos is a genuine talent. Played DM yesterday with strict positional discipline. Dude is combative, mobile, agile and technically gifted to play the role.

I say this with caution, but from what I have seen so far, Andrey's vision for forward passes is nearly in the same class as Enzo's.

For me, Andrey Santos should be the number one player in that midfield for now.

I still don't understand don't understand why we are chasing Caicedo for £100m.

The important point always is that a loan move is never an automatic solution to having more game time.

I can give a ton of Chelsea young players where loan moves ruined their talents completely. From Gael Kakuta to Charly Musonda, Lucas Piazon, Jeremie Boga, Ulises Davilla, Tomas Kalas, Josh McEachran, Billy Gilmour to name a few.

These were ones with genuine talents that could have had better careers, if they stayed rather than leaving.

Most loan moves are bad for young players and don't work out. They are humans like you and I. Leaving your comfort zone to a completely new country, language, work principles, gaffer, etc can be genuinely disruptive to 17/18 year olds.

So yes, I would rather Lewis Hall stays and get a few games, than hop over to Strasbourg in the hope of game time, doesn't get it, and then stagnates.

Comps made Pepe, Bakayoko looked like world beaters, so whatever you saw from the comp might not tell you the full picture of what a player is both the good & bad.

I saw a stat that said Caicedo lost more balls per 90 last season than Gallagher, one is called a dog & the other is a dm, so should we not buy Caicedo again because he might sometimes have misplaced passes.

if you don't watch a player it is better to read reports on him or ask from people that have watched him say than to have a half-baked opinion from a random out of context comp.

Ibime and I were one of the very few that opposed the Bakayoko deal based on the failure of the eye-test for technique. You don't need to watch a player for donkey years to see technique.

What you are trying to pass across is how a player responds to varying tactical scenarios. This you cannot assess in 3 min comps. But this has got nothing to do with technique.

What we are worried about is how he fares in the PL, in presumably quicker, tighter tactical setups than Ligue 1. And a DM with loose technique is potentially devastating in the PL, because more often than not, he's losing the ball in the most dangerous part of the pitch.
